Information
A Zion Fall Tradition
by Pastor Ted Vanderpan
Fall is filled with traditions. The beginning of the school year brings the start of fall sports. For many of us the fall harvest is an important part of our background. For some of us fall means a trip to a local apple orchard, pumpkins, or bunches of corn stalks on the front porch of our homes. This month many of us will be celebrating one of our most important family traditions – Thanksgiving Day.
One of the traditions we have at Zion is our Fall Stewardship Emphasis. Our theme this year is ―A Promising Tomorrow‖. Every fall we pause to take a look at several aspects of what the Bible says about our personal finances and the mission of our congregation. Then, the Stewardship Committee extends an invitation to all those who call Zion their church home to make a financial commitment to support the ministry of Zion for the coming year. There are some good reasons we do this. Like many churches we have found:
Our financial giving at church is really a spiritual issue and ultimately is about giving to God. You see, there is a connection between our financial giving and our spiritual lives. In some ways our giving is a sort of thermometer of our spiritual lives. Giving is a topic that naturally should be addressed at church.
People don‘t naturally give more to the church each year unless they are asked. People lead busy lives with many things on their minds. Often the finances of church are taken for granted. Unless we bring this aspect of the Christian life to the attention of the people it goes unexamined.
Churches that fail to bring this kind of emphasis, fail to have adequate finances and ultimately end up discussing finances all the time. At Zion we have chosen to establish this fall tradition of placing an emphasis on how our faith and finances are connected. Following this several week emphasis we ask people to make their financial commitment for the coming year. By placing a strong emphasis on finances for several weeks in the fall, we don‘t have to focus on it all year long. Asking people to make this kind of financial commitment is the only way to adequately fund the church.
The coming two Sundays, November 7 and 14, will focus on the connection between our faith and our finances. To reinforce our efforts to grow in the six marks of discipleship, we are beginning a new tradition at Zion. You will have an opportunity to make two interrelated commitments:
To support God‘s work through Zion financially with pledges to both the General and the Building Fund.
To grow as disciples with pledges to grow in the marks of discipleship.
On Sunday, October 31, a packet of materials will be ready at church for each family to pick up . If you are not there or you forget to take yours, the packet will be mailed to you. Please read through the materials, consider the invitation enclosed, pray about your response and then complete the enclosed 2011 Pledge Cards. The cards will be returned on November 14 during worship services.
I hope your fall is filled with meaningful traditions and that our Fall Stewardship Emphasis is a tradition that adds depth and richness to your Christian faith.

Service of Remembrance
On, November 7, 2010, All Saints Sunday, Zion will be holding its annual ―Service of Remembrance‖ at 4pm. Traditionally, we take this time to honor and remember our loved ones that have died over the past year or in previous years.
The service includes scripture readings, hymns, prayers, a meditation and Holy Communion. There is also an opportunity for everyone to light a candle in memory of their loved ones and recite their names.
This year, after the worship service, there will be a dinner served in the Fellowship Hall to give people the opportunity to gather together with family and friends and share memories of their loved ones.
If you plan on attending the dinner, please contact the church office at 763.682.1245 to make reservations.
Welcome New Staff
Tom Janzen first joined the Zion staff as part-time custodian in January 2009. Tom accepted the position of Facilities and Grounds Manager in July 2010, and is now a full-time member of the staff. His responsibilities include maintaining the building and grounds, set-up and tear-down for events, and supervising volunteers. Tom lives here in Buffalo with his wife Melissa, and their children Jonathan, Emma and Josie.
In October, Tom was joined by Louis Nagel, our new part-time custodian who will be working at Zion Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings as well as some Saturdays. Louis also works at St. Timothy‘s School in Maple Lake.
Zion‘s new nursery coordinator is Missy Peterson, a life long member of Zion, born and raised in Buffalo and a 2004 BHS graduate. Missy then majored in Child and Family Studies at St. Cloud State. Her full-time job is at Kid‘s Haven Child Care and Preschool. Missy likes to spend her spare time with her family and friends, and looks forward to getting to know new families at Zion. She says ―I am blessed to be a part of so many children‘s lives and thank God for the opportunity to serve his children.‖

New Churchwide
Organization Design
ELCA News Service
The Church Council of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)
took action Oct. 8 to affirm the concept
for a new design of the ELCA
churchwide organization in 2011, said
the Rev. Mark S. Hanson, ELCA
presiding bishop, in an Oct. 11
announcement to churchwide staff. The
council authorized the officers of the
churchwide organization to take the
necessary personnel actions and to
implement the new design beginning
Feb. 1, 2011, the start of the next
fiscal year.
The council deleted continuing
resolutions in the ELCA Constitution
related to churchwide units and adopted
new continuing resolutions to
implement the design and establish lines
of responsibility, Hanson reported.
The council also expressed appreciation
to the staff of the churchwide
organization, saying they would "hold in
prayer" employees personally affected
by a reduction in staff prompted by the
new design.
"This new design positions the
churchwide organization to make a vital
and vibrant contribution to the
ministries of this church and the work
of partners throughout the world,"
Hanson told the ELCA News
Service. "The new design also assumes
that financial support will continue for
these vital ministries -- and enable us to
engage in these ministries in a more
flexible and forward way."

Advent Begins November 28
November is the month of Thanksgiving, but it often also includes the beginning of a new church year. This year, November 28 is the first Sunday of Advent.
The Advent wreath is a symbol of watchfulness and increasing joy as we anticipate Jesus‘ birth. The wreath‘s circular shape symbolizes eternity, or life without end. The candles remind us that Jesus is the Light of the World — he brought light and life to a dark world (see John 1:4-5). On each of the four Sundays of Advent, we light a new candle. As the light grows, so do our hope and joy.
Annual Meeting
The Annual Congregational Meeting of Zion Lutheran Church will be held in Trinity Hall on Sunday, December 5, 2010 following the 10:30 service (at approximately 11:30 am). All voting members are requested to attend. A voting member is defined as confirmed, communing, & contributing.

The nominating committee is accepting nominations for the following positions:
4 Church Council Members to serve for 3 years
2 Nominating Committee Members. Two will serve for 3 years, and 1 to serve for 2 years.
2 Zion Foundation Trustees to serve for 3 years.
5 Minneapolis Area Synod Voting Members, including 1 youth member to serve for 2 years. At least 1 of the 4 adults should be female, at least 2 of the 4 adults should be male. The 2011 synod assembly is on May 7 in Eden Prairie.

The discipline of gratitude
Gratitude … goes beyond the ―mine‖ and ―thine‖ and claims the truth that all of life is
a pure gift. In the past I always thought of gratitude as a spontaneous response to the
awareness of gifts received, but now I realize that gratitude can also be lived as a
discipline. The discipline of gratitude is the explicit effort to acknowledge that all I am
and have is given to me as a gift of love, a gift to be celebrated with joy.

Reaching Past The Wire
Zion Book Club
The Zion Book Club will meet on Monday, November 15 at 7pm in the Library to discuss Reaching Past the Wire by Connie Lounsbury. This month the author will visit with the group about her book and the writing process. Lounsbury collaborated with Deana Germain, who served as a nurse at the Iraqi prison to write the amazing account of the soldier's experience.
All are welcome and refreshments will be served.
With startling detail, Lt. Col. Germain offers a clear-eyed account of life as a nursing supervisor behind the fortified gates of Abu Ghraib. Her duty: To treat Iraqi prisoners, U.S. soldiers, and Marines in need of medical attention. Shortly after she arrived, the notorious prison made headlines around the world for abuses that had stopped months before. Despite unbearable heat, frequent mortar attacks, medical supply shortages, substandard facilities, the relentless stench of war, and sleepless nights quartered in a tiny prison cell, Germain served the medical needs of each of her patients with remarkable humanity. St. Lucia Supper December 13 at Zion
Planning is underway for the annual St. Lucia supper, this year to be held on Monday, December 13. The St. Lucia supper is a family friendly event that highlights the Swedish tradition of Lucia, who gave food to those in need. Many Swedish families and communities celebrate St. Lucia day with a breakfast served by the oldest daughter in the family or someone chosen to wear the Lucia crown of lighted candles. Zion invites all to a light supper of soups, breads, cheeses, and Scandinavian specialties with a brief program of music, scripture, and Scandinavian memories. Sign up at the Zion information desk or online later this month.
Are you interested in helping on December 13? You can help bake the traditional Lucia rolls, help serve the supper, provide Christmas cookies/treats, or help with clean up after the supper, please contact Sherilyn Burgdorf ([email protected] or 763.682.1245, ext. 307)

Thanksgiving Visits to
Homebound and Seniors
Would you have time to set aside during
the week of November 15-19 for visits
to homebound and senior citizens in our
area? The Women of Zion have a
tradition of giving a thanksgiving gift to
those who find it difficult to come to
Zion weekly for worship. If you can help
by making 3-4 brief visits during the
week, contact Sherilyn Burgdorf
(SBurgdorf@ZionBuffalo) or Phyllis
Bengtson (682.3201).
Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Worship
The 34th Annual Community Festival of Thanksgiving and Praise will take place at Zion on Wednesday, November 24 at 8:00pm. Invite your neighbors and friends to attend this service of thanks that brings our community together. This is truly a faith-filled experience for all families.
Pastors from the Buffalo area churches join to give leadership to this community-wide time of worship. Over 130 musicians from different churches are expected to participate. Choirs from six Buffalo churches will combine to present anthems of thanks and praise with organ and brass. The handbell choirs from Zion and other churches are preparing pieces to be rung in a massed choir.
Nursery is provided, and offerings are used to help those in need through the Buffalo Ministerial Association.
Asian Tacos
Julie says, ―The following recipe calls for pork (which is really good), but I discovered that it really hides the gamey taste of goose quite well!‖
3 T Hoisin sauce 3 T Soy Sauce 2 T Dry Sherry 1 T sugar 1 t Chinese 5 Spice powder 1/2 t salt 3 lb meat pork roast
Combine all (but meat) in Ziploc bag. Add meat and marinate at least 4 hours (can just freeze the raw meat in the marinade as well—thaw before cooking.)
Put in crock pot; shred meat when cooked. (Cooked meat freezes well, also.)
Serving suggestion: on tortillas with shredded cheese.
Do you have a good freezer recipe to share? We‘d love to try it! Please send it to [email protected].
Fellowship Committee
Pastor Karri is working to get the
fellowship committee up and running
again following a couple of years of
inactivity. The constitution defines this
committee as intended to encourage
and promote fellowship among Zion
members in social settings such as
church picnics, special events, and
recreational opportunities. Any one who
is interested in helping with the process,
please contact her and/or plan to attend
an organizational meeting at 6pm on
November 10.

Members Going to Zambia and Jamaica!
Villages of Hope in Zambia:
Dave and Sue Wright, Zion members, have committed to visiting Villages of Hope in Zambia. They will leave January 15, 2011 to assist one of Zion's mission partners, All Kids Can Learn International, in organizing a dairy that will provide the orphans with meat, milk, and cheese, and will also teach them dairy farming skills. The Wrights ask for your support in prayer. Tax deductible financial contributions can be made by check payable to AKCLI with ‗Dave & Sue Wright‘ in the memo, delivered to Zion or mailed to Wrights at 310 12th St S, Buffalo.
Mission Jamaica:
The Global Missions committee is extremely excited that 24 members of the Zion community will be accompanying Pastor Ted on a mission trip to Jamaica February 26 through March 5. Although this is the first time a Mission Jamaica Team of Zion members has been organized, both Pastor Ted and Pastor Karri have led groups to the island to work in a variety of settings. The trip offers people the opportunity to share their unique gifts regardless of their age or skill set. Please hold the Mission Jamaica Team in prayer as they prepare for their trip and be sure to watch for information on how you can become a prayer partner for the team!
How Harvest of Hands Supports World
Hunger
Did you know that all proceeds raised the November 6 Harvest of Hands Festival will be donated to the Buffalo Food Shelf, the World Hunger Appeal, and the Heifer International ―Live Baby Animal Fair‖?
Harvest of Hands donates to the Buffalo Food Shelf because their mission is to provide quality food and family support services to those in need in the Buffalo, Minnesota area.
Harvest of Hands donates to World Hunger Appeal because through the Lutheran World Federation food, water, emergency shelter, quilts, and health kits are provided to people in need around the world.
The Harvest of Hands event will again set aside $500 for the purchase of a cow at the Heifer International “Live Baby Animal Fair” scheduled for May 2011 at the Buffalo Civic Center. Heifer is a 65-year-old non-profit international organization whose goal is to help end world hunger and poverty through self-reliance and sustainability. Selected recipient families receive an animal gift along with the husbandry skills needed to care for this animal. The animal gifts vary according to the needs of the family and suitability of the region. A gift animal can be bees, camel, chickens, ducks, geese, goat, heifer, llama, pig, rabbits, sheep, or water buffalo. Giving the gift of an animal is like giving a small business to a family. This animal will provide the needy family with income, which in turn will be used to purchase education, food, housing, and/or medicine while also providing

The Secret Sauce
By Pastor Kelly Chatman from the
newsletter of Redeemer Lutheran
Church
Our father was legendary for
his barbecue sauce. I recall how as a
child during holidays we experienced
the processional of friends and
neighbors coming to our home to eat
our father’s barbecue. The secret was in
the sauce. Our household was
transformed through the process of
spice aromas uniting to become what
became known as the ―secret sauce‖.
Throughout our town people said our
father perfected the art of making
barbecue. He could somehow put spices
together that became something that
was truly wonderful.
Whether you are a pastor, teacher,
parent, coach or corporate leader we all
carry within us a desire to achieve my
father’s success. We want to know that
―secret‖ ingredient that will make
home, school, church and organizations
truly special.
I am an adult now and our father has
long since passed away but he has left
for us the witness of the ―secret sauce‖.
The secret sauce is when we love what
we do and experience the joy of serving
others. The secret sauce is the belief
that when we give our best for others
we can build the kind of family,
community, church and world God
desires for us all.
Individuals and institutions are at their
best when they exist for the greater
good and not simply to serve
themselves. Churches do better when
they realize they don’t just exist for
―members‖. Families do better when
they don’t just focus on themselves and
when they prepare to engage and
contribute to the health of community
and world. Government does better
when we don’t just focus on weak or
strong but the health and quality of the
whole.
The real message is we do better, when
we all do better. So what’s in the secret
sauce? Look round you today. Ask
Millie, the ninety-four year old woman

The Social Ministry Committee asks for your prayers, gifts, talents, and support over the next two months as Zion goes out into our community to honor and help people.
A summary of projects is listed in the right column. You can get involved in any or all of these activities! To volunteer to help or for more information, contact Sandy or Roger Brenny at 763.682.2979 or [email protected].
Meals on Wheels
Thank you to all of those who have been quick to sign up for Meals on Wheels. Many slots have already been filled.
Zion is asked to provide three drivers each day in November at 11:45am for approximately an hour of meal delivery to households in the city of Buffalo. This is a most rewarding activity and makes a good family service project.
Consider which days you can help and sign up at the information desk or by emailing [email protected]. You can also check the calendar at ZionBuffalo.org/MOW.
If you‘ve driven before and prefer a specific route please request it when you sign up. If you‘d like to try it but you‘re unfamiliar with Buffalo, let us know. We‘ll find a partner for your first drive.
Food Shelf Gala
Love Inc-Big Woods, one of Zion‘s local mission partners, will hold their first annual Gala on Sunday, November 14, from 4:30 to 8pm at the Kings House Retreat Center, 612 First Avenue South on Buffalo Lake.
The event will include hearty hors d‘oeuvres, a silent auction, music featuring Dahmen Brothers + Dad, and a dessert bar.
Tickets are $25 per person and are available at Buffalo Books, and at Zion on October 31 and November 7.
All Blood Types are Needed
Every minute of every day, someone needs blood. That blood can only come from a volunteer donor, a person like you who makes the choice to donate.
The American Red Cross Bloodmobile is coming to Zion on November 15. Both donors and volunteers are needed; please call Bev Smith at 763.675.3182 or 763.742.7493 to get involved.
Giving blood is a simple (but not a small) thing to do. The whole donation process takes about an hour; including registration, a confidential health interview, the donation itself (which takes only about ten minutes), and time for refreshments.

Finance & Stewardship
Answer to the Just for Kids puzzle on
page 11:
―Enter his gates with thanksgiving
and his courts with praise; give
thanks to him and praise his
name.‖ (Psalm 1004:4, NIV)
Pledging to Give and Grow
Discipleship is about making the commitment to an active, living faith. It is a way to learn more about what God is up to in our lives and in our congregation. As we grow in the marks of discipleship, we equip individuals and families for a living relationship with the living God. As we raise the level of expectations for ourselves as followers of Christ, we will grow in our love for one another and in our service to the world.
A Promising Tomorrow is all about discipleship. This month you are invited to make a financial pledge for God‘s work through Zion, and you are being asked to grow in each of the six marks of discipleship.
A Promising Tomorrow encourages all of us to give back to God in response to the gifts we have been given—our time, talents, and money. Pledges are estimates of giving—of all we intend to return to God.
Devotional Booklets
The Stewardship Committee has assembled a book of devotions written by Zion members to complement the Power Surge book study and Reaching for Tomorrow events. If you do not yet have a copy of the devotional booklet you can pick one up at the information desk or church office throughout the month, find the devotions online at ZionBuffalo.org/Devotions or call the church office at 763.682.1245 and request that one be mailed to your home.
Giving Freely Helps Us Grow
Throughout 2010 the Stewardship
Committee has written and published
numerous newsletter and bulletin
articles for you, the members of Zion.
Stewardship is a vital part of our walk
with God. We hope that these articles
have enlightened, inspired and helped
you to remember the many blessings
God has given us to use while we live
out our earthly lives. He looks to us to
share those many blessings with the less
fortunate. Giving freely of our many
blessings helps us to grow in our
relationship with Jesus.
On the 14th of this month we will all be
asked to commit to sharing our earthly
abundance so that we can continue to
do God’s work through Zion. This is an
individual decision that we all need to
prayerfully consider. In 2 Corinthians 9
– Paul writes ―Each of you must give as
you have made up your mind, not
reluctantly or under compulsion, for
God loves a cheerful giver.‖
The Stewardship Committee gives
thanks to God for your faithful service
of sharing your talents and for your
financial support.
Paradox
It is in loving—not in being loved,
The heart is blessed;
It is in giving—not in seeking gifts,
We find our quest
If thou art hungry, lacking in heavenly
food
Give hope and cheer.
If thou are sad and wouldst be
comforted,
Stay sorrow’s tear
Whatever be thy longing and thy need,
That do thou give;
So shall thy soul be fed, and thou
indeed,
Shall truly live.

A Tribute to Darrell Anderson
By Idella Ziegler
Darrell has been a member for over 50 years! If you belong to Zion Lutheran for many years and enjoy volunteering, YOU will be recycled (and that‘s a compliment).
At Harvest of Hands time, you will see Darrell year after year carrying boxes, sorting merchandise for the white elephant sales area and all the while being a comedian too.
Every year he finds something that no one seems to know what it is, or what it would be used for. Darrell will create a name for it and how it can be put to good use. Sometimes he is challenged but he is very convincing.
Greet and thank him again this year at Harvest of Hands, as he serves as salesman and stays on duty until the sale ends and the rooms are again ready for Sunday school the next day.
The many volunteers that have worked with him year after year deserve your thanks too. Darrell makes sure laughter is included as the rooms of merchandise, that many of you have donated, become dollars to feed the hungry.
We need more Darrell Andersons to help at Harvest of Hands. Is this the year you will volunteer?
God bless all our volunteers at Zion. It makes Harvest of Hands a most rewarding experience and helps so many people that are in need.
Make plans to attend Harvest of Hands, enjoy breakfast with friends, great shopping opportunities, gifts for all ages, and be sure to walk down the hall to the white elephant area to see the bargains galore.
We‘ll see you on Saturday, November 6. May this be the most successful Harvest of Hands yet, as we all joint together to help those in need.
Remembering the Saints
When Paul wrote to the church in Rome, he addressed his letter ―To all God‘s beloved … who are called to be saints‖ (Romans 1:7, NRSV). Paul regarded his fellow believers as people who have responded to the good news of Christ by choosing to follow and serve God. The New Testament emphasizes that Christians are God‘s beloved — special people set apart to receive his grace and to be his witnesses. All people whose minds and hearts are devoted to God are ―called to be saints.‖ About 700 years after the church began, leaders designated November 1 as All Saints‘ Day to honor people whose lives reflect Christ dwelling within them. Because of what God has done for us, all Christians can wear the label of saint.
