Big Drum /Small WorldFeaturing the metta QuintetJanuary 27, 2012 at 7:30pm

Jazz is a distinctly American art form whose influence continues to spread across the globe and send back new and exciting music influenced by its journey. The Metta Quintet explores this facet of jazz by performing works by eight composers from eight different countries. The concert incorporates an imaginative use of video allowing audiences to get to know about each of the composers and their musical sensibilities.

JazzReach is an enterprising New York organization dedicated to educating children and adults in their appreciation of jazz. The Metta Quintet is comprised of some of today’s brightest players. South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela has traveled the globe and played with just about every top star you can think of (Paul Simon, Herb Alpert, Bob Marley and Fela Kuti to name a few) — writing several international hits and selling millions of cds in the process. His single, Grazing in the Grass, topped the Rolling Stones’ Jumping Jack Flash in the U.S. charts and brought him a Grammy. Masekela’s hit, Bring Him Back Home, became the anthem for Nelson Mandela’s world tour following his release from prison. The Sound of Music is one of the most-beloved musicals of all time…but you’ve never heard it quite like this. The band members of BRO have updated some of their ‘favorite things’ about these songs, with the full blessings of the von Trapp family and the Rogers & Hammerstein organization.

Taking a smart approach to the music and characters, each song is in a different style. The harmony of the Jackson 5’s “ABC” transforms into the family singers learning to sing “Do-Re-Mi.” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” a testament to female empowerment, gets a Mary Blige old school treatment. Not to give it all away, but you’ll also hear some bluegrass, jazz, klezmer, and some great all-out rock ’n roll.

BRO is new, but Barclay audiences may recognize some of the band members from the East Village Opera Company who were a big hit during their two previous appearances here. “I like what they’re doing. I think they’re terrific musicians,” says Johannes von Trapp, 72, the youngest of the von Trapp siblings depicted in the film. “They took songs that have been played so often they’ve become clichéd, and did some exciting stuff with them.”

Of all the styles of American music, none is more iconic than jazz. Born of hard times, the music is a defiant celebration of freedom and individuality. It has taken many forms over the years, and continues to evolve, but New Orleans’ Preservation Hall Jazz Band proves nightly that there’s plenty of adventure left in its original form: the rich musical interplay known as New Orleans-style jazz.

A French Quarter legend, Preservation Hall’s original members honed their talents playing alongside jazz originators such as Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton. No two performances are alike. Host Patrick Bristow and six superb comedian/ puppeteers improvise on suggestions from the audience, often with uproarious results. From Montreal, The 7 Fingers is Canada’s latest rising star in the cirque world. Their show, Traces, is already an international hit. And P-S-Y, their fifth show, is on its way. Just check out the reviews from their summer run in Boston.

The ten-year-old company’s name in French (Les 7 Doigts de la Main) refers to the company’s seven founders, and is a twist on an idiom about disparate elements working together like fingers of a hand.

From Montreal, The 7 Fingers is Canada’s latest rising star in the cirque world. Their show, Traces, is already an international hit. And P-S-Y, their fifth show, is on its way. Just check out the reviews from their summer run in Boston.

The ten-year-old company’s name in French (Les 7 Doigts de la Main) refers to the company’s seven founders, and is a twist on an idiom about disparate elements working together like fingers of a hand.

Babel is a story-book world filled with profoundly human character dancers, of people seeking personal identify in a world of swirling cultures. Described by London’s Guardian as “the most fiercely resonant dance theatre of the decade,” it is a new work from one of Europe’s most successful and inventive choreographers, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, currently the European “It” boy of choreography.

In addition to having formed his own company in Belgium, he continues as an associate artist at London’s prestigious Sadlers’ Wells. The company’s name, Eastman, is a literal translation of the director’s last name.

Dance InitiativeThis program marks an evolution of the Barclay’s 20-year involvement in dance. It is being designed to increase the significance and profile of dance in Orange County and to increase the community’s engage-ment with dance. The theatre intends to grow new audiences, to provide opportunities for adults and students to learn about dance and dance-making, and to collaborate in creative ways with members of the Orange County dance community. A “second-tier” series of more exploratory work is being considered with the introduction of famed Irish dancer, Colin Dunne, who has pushed far beyond his traditional background. Colin Dunne sheds his past in his first full-length solo show. Out of Time seamlessly integrates movement, film and sound design to offer an utterly new twist on step dance, the art form for which Dunne is internationally acclaimed.

Dunne is joined onstage by archival film images of dancers from the 1930’s onwards — including himself as a ten-year old boy — creating a provocative dialogue between past and present. The show has become highly regarded at international arts festivals, and the Barclay is pleased to host its West Coast premiere.

Intimate and playful, Out of Time is an unsentimental homage to Irish step dance and a bold look at Dunne’s personal and artistic relationship with a tradition that has shaped his life.

Be there for the birth of four new ballets created as part of the intensive 3-week process of the National Choreographers Initiative. Director Molly Lynch invites four choreographers of note, as well as sixteen professional dancers from ballet companies across the country, to participate. NCI is a southern California project with national influence. NCI has brought 32 choreographers to California to develop new works. Many of the pieces begun here have gone on to be performed elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. The project culminates in a public performance that showcases the excitement of new creation. It’s also an opportunity to hear the choreographers talk about their concepts and ideas and for you to participate in the discussion. This has become the must-see dance event of the summer.
