Computing power consumes electricity: energy for data

processing, cooling and also uninterruptible power

supply. Let TV Rheinland guide your company along

the path to higher energy efciency and lower CO2

emissions through our comprehensive approach toanalysis and monitoring.

We concentrate on applying an integrated approach

to your data centre. That means analysing the HVAC

system, power supply, IT environment and other power

consumers such as lighting, re protection, etc.

Using measurements and analyses of the actual condi-

tion, we determine the improvement potential. Our

survey also takes management and communication

structures into account. This makes it possible to createoptimised processes that lead to continuous improve-

ment, thereby sustainably ensuring optimised condi-

tions in terms of energy consumption.

Working together with you, we then initiate measures

from the potential improvements which have beenidentied. The goal is to reduce energy consumption

in the data centre and to cut energy costs through

consistent implementation of the dended measures

    year after year.

We conduct annual audits in order to monitor the ef-

fectiveness of the measures implemented and use new

ideas to help maintain the conguration of your data

centre at the current state-of-the-art. In this way, you

take advantage of our expertise over the long term.

    1. Energy technology assessmentThe assessment is used to determine the actual state

and to prepare an optimisation concept.

    It contains:

Efciency check with review of documents, inspectionof the data centre, pre-audit based on TV Rheinlands

list of criteria, and short report with estimations of

    improvement potential

Measurements of energy consumption, heat ows, air-

    ows, etc.

Recording of heat distributionsAnalysis of energy consumers

Analysis of HVAC and heat dissipation

    Development of improvement measures

Concept design (alternative concepts, if necessary)

Report with denition, evaluation and possiblequantication of the improvement potential

You identify the actual electrical consumption of

    your IT landscape.

You receive competent advice on the best ways to

    increase efciency.

    You permanently reduce energy costs.

Your certicate serves as documentary proof of yourCorporate Social Responsibility (CSR).

    2. MeasurementsA solid assessment can only be made on the basis o

measurement values. As a supplement to the existing

energy data, we oer you the ollowing measurements:

Blower door testUsing a blower door test to check the tightness of the

building or shell reveals any existing weaknesses. This is

particularly important where re protection is provided

by means of an oxygen-reduced atmosphere or if air-

circulating climate control systems are used.

    Thermography and airfow measurement

In order to identify temperature-critical areas, we offer

thermographic recordings and occasional airow measure-

ments for the visualisation of air movement.

    Flow and heat measurement

For the evaluation of the cooling systems, the quantity of

heat carried away in the cooling water circuit is recorded

by means of an ultrasonic ow meter.

    Short-term measurements o electrical power

Short-term measurements (spot measurements) of the

electrical power drawn by the major consumers make it

possible to estimate the energy ows. These measure-

ments are carried out by means of inductive, non-contact

transducers without the need to interrupt operation.

    Long-term measurements o electrical power

A continuous measurement of electrical power provides

the advantage that variations in consumption are also

recorded. This prevents any temporary drops or peaks

    from distorting the measured values.

    3. Energy-Efcient data CentreCertication by TV Rheinland enables you to syste-

matically achieve a sustained improvement of the en-

ergy efciency of your data centre.

Prerequisites in preparation or certication:The most important measures for an energy-efcient

operation are met, i. e. at least 60 % of the possible

evaluation points of the criteria catalogue are achieved.

Instruments for monitoring, for analysis and for im-

plementation of measures to raise efciency are esta-

    blished in the data centre.

Those who cacuate efcietyicue us i their cacuatios.

The sustainable use of energy is an overarching topic.

In the eld of information and communication tech-

nology, this idea is expressed by the term Green IT.

Data centres in particular require large quantities of

electrical energy. This translates into high operating

costs and adversely impacts the CO2 balance of the

company. In this connection, it has been determined

that the electrical consumption of data centres repre-

sents a 1.8 % share of the total electrical consumption

in Germany. In other words, servers and data centresalone consume the combined output of four coal-red

    power plants.

More than 50 % of the energy in data centres is used

to operate the systems (air-conditioning, ventilation,

safety systems, lighting, etc.). In order to achieve energy-

savings here, these energy consumption rates must be

determined. In many cases, no measurement data are

available and separate responsibilities make it even

more difcult to identify solutions. This is where the

experts from TV Rheinland intervene and point outopportunities to permanently increase efciency.

    The Internet platform TUVdotCOM

    illustrates the difference: Products,

    services, companies, systems and
