in his 21st season as head coach of the Park University cross country and track and field squads, Brian Renshaw leads this year’s Pirate squad into its third season in the American Midwest Con-ference and hopes to take his women’s cross country team to its seventh straight NAIA Cross Country national championship meet and his men’s team to their first national appearance since 2005. The Pirates will feature 13 runners on its men’s squad this season and six on the women’s team. The men’s squad has seven returners and six newcomers, while the women will bring in two newcomers and return four. Daniel Tubei returns for Park after a phenomenal cross and track season in 2010-11. Tubei qualified for both the NAIA Cross Country and Outdoor Track and Field National Champion-ship meets. Tubei registered the fastest 8K time in school history last season at the Missouri Southern Stampede meet with his time of 24:07. He also became a national champion after winning the marathon race at the 2011 NAIA Outdoor National Championship meet in Marion, Ind. Trey Crawford returns for his senior season, Crawford has posted some stellar times in his three years with the Pirates and was named the 2008 MCAC Freshman of the Year. Will Zibers also brings some experience to the team in his senior season. Zibers took home 11th-place in last year’s AMC Championship race. Dakota Olson and James Straubel enter their junior seasons for the Pirates, Olson and Straubel are also strong performers on Park’s track and field squad. Christian Hoffman and Art Vollbrecht are back for their sophomore seasons, each of them finished in the top 20 at the AMC Championship meet, as Hoffman took 15th and Vollbrecht took 16th. The newcomers entering the 2011 season are freshman Wycla Bratton (Kansas City, Mo.), Thomas Chelulei (Kapsabet, Kenya), freshman Jeffrey King (Blue Springs, Mo.), freshman An-drew Parker (Gladstone, Mo.) freshman Darren Vest (Antrim, N.H.) and freshman Derrick Wilmore (Raymore, Mo.) “Our returners look like they have improved quite a bit this offseason and I think our freshman will come in and build on their strength and endurance throughout the season,” said Renshaw. On the women’s side Park returns four runners from last year’s AMC championship team and will look to qualify for the NAIA Women’s Cross Country national championship meet for the seventh straight time. If that is going to happen returners, Elizabeth Grubbs, Lindsey McDonald, Niesha Morgan and Julie Munter will have to help lead newcomers A’brey Rogers and Chrisena Whyte along the way. Morgan ran the fastest time of any Pirate at the National Championship meet a year ago with her time of 18:43. McDonald finished the national meet in a time of 19:54 and placed seventh in the AMC meet with her time of 19:27. Grubbs enters her second season with Park, after taking 10th-place at the AMC meet and ran the national meet in a time of 21:03. Julie Munter also competed at the national meet last season in Fort Vancouver, Wash., finishing the 5K in a time of 22:37. Park’s schedule will have a new feel to it as well, as the Pirates open up their season on Sept. 3 at Baker’s Maple Leaf Invitational instead of their normal trek to Lawrence, Kan. for the Bob Timmons Classic. Then on Friday, Sept. 30 Park makes its annual trip to Emporia, Kan., for the Emporia State Inviational meet. Another annual meet takes place a week later at the Haskell Invite in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday, Oct. 8. Park’s men’s and women’s teams won the Haskell race in 2010. The final meet of the regular season will commence on Saturday, Oct. 22 in Winfield, Kan. The Pirates will take part in the Southwestern College Invitational for the first time since 2007. The AMC Championships will again be held in St. Louis, Mo. on Saturday, Nov. 5 in beautiful Forest Park. Finally, what both Park squad’s will be fighting for, a chance to compete in the 56th An-nual Men’s and 32nd Annual Women’s NAIA Cross Country National Championship meet in historic Fort Vancouver, Wash., which takes place on Nov. 19.

Brian Renshaw will look to lead his women’s cross country team to its seventh straight trip to the NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championship meet.

Entering his senior year, Will Zibers hopes to lead the Park University men’s cross country team to its first NAIA National Championship meet since 2005.

2011 Track & Field P

reviewthe 2012 Park University track and field program is full of excitement and optimism with a crop of new talent and a newly renovated and state of the art track facility on its campus. The new track is the first renovation in the 21 year career for head coach Brian Renshaw and he along with his team couldn’t be more thrilled for the upgrades. “Our athletes are very excited about the new track,” said Renshaw. “The new kids love it and the returners are so appreciative because they had to train on the old one and can really feel a difference in our new facility. “The new track will really help us keep our athletes injury free and we will be able to do many things that we weren’t able to in the past.” Some of the improvements included resurfacing the 400-meter, six-lane track and rede-signing jump areas. McConnell & Associates, Kansas City, Mo., served as the contractor for the project. A new fence has been installed that surrounds the entirety of the track as well. The opening of the new track this summer will bring the opportunity for the University to once again host dual competition track meets. It also will be heavily utilized as an additional training facility for all of Park’s athletic programs. Access of the new track will be limited to of-ficial Park University use. The 2012 men’s track and field team will feature 23 athletes, while the women’s squad has 14 runners. The men’s team is full of newcomers with 12 and 11 returners. Returning on the men’s squad is sophomore Thomas Chelulei. The Kapsabet, Kenya native qualified for the 2011 NAIA Men’s Outdoor National Championship meet in the Marathon and finished seventh in a time of 2:32.05. Trey Crawford returns for his senior season and joins fellow senior Will Zibers. Look for Crawford and Zibers to compete heavily in the 5,000, 1,500 and 10,000 meter races. Junior Phillip Hayes also returns for Park. Hayes will compete in the 100 meter dash and long jump in his third year in the program. Fellow junior Aric Luman alo runs the 100 meter dash and the long jump and posted the best times and marks in both of those competitions for Park in 2011. Three other juniors return for Coach Renshaw including Dakota Olson, James Straubel and Daniel Tubei. Olson will take part in mostly mid-distance heats like the 400 and 800 meter races. Straubel is a multi-talented athlete after competing in the 800, 5,000, 1,500 and 3000 meter Steeplechase races in 2011. Tubei was the most decorated athlete on any Park University varsity squad last year after winning the Marathon at the 2011 NAIA Outdoor National Championship meet in a time of 2:27.12. He also ran the teams fastest times in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meter races in 2011. The final list of returners includes three sophomores, Christian Hoffman, Anthony Stasiak and Art Vollbrecht. The newcomers joining Park for the first time are sophomores Andreas Tabu-Muntu and Bert Tilfas and freshmen Luke Bossert, Wycla Bratton, Jasper Greeson, Wesley Jensen, Jeffrey King, Theodore McCord, Andrew Parker, Jermaine Unanka, Darren Vest and Derrick Wilmore. On the women’s side, Park returns seniors Lauren Karley and Melissa Lyall. Karley is a tal-ented sprinter for the Pirates after competing in the 200 meter race last year and Lyall will look to again compete in the 800 meter and 1,500 meter races. Four juniors return for coach Renshaw in 2012, Diamonique Jordan leads the juniors after posting some of the fastest times of any Pirates last season in the 200 and 400 meter races. Lindsey McDonald also returns to Park after an exceptional sophomore season. McDonald ran in both the NAIA Women’s Cross Country and the NAIA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National championship meets in 2010-11. On the track, McDonald ran the fastest 1,500, 5,000 and 10,000 meter races last year. Julie Munter also returns for the Pirates after a strong season in the 5,000 and 10,000 meter races as a sophomore. A’Brey Rogers is the final junior on the roster after transferring to Park from Johnson County Community College. The sophomore class is led by returner Elizabeth Grubbs who is a multi-talented runner along with Niesha Morgan and Ashley Taylor. Taylor became Park’s top long jumper her fresh-man season. She finished third in the AMC Championship meet in the long jump with a mark of 4.87m. Coach Renshaw welcomes in five freshman this season including Alannah Blair, Danielle Borman, Monique Mitchell, Addy Nemes and Chrisena Whyte. The 2012 track schedule features eight regular season meets and begins on St. Patty’s Day, Mar. 17 at the Central Methodist Open. The next week Park travels to Coach Renshaw’s alma mater of Baker University for the Baker Relays on Saturday, Mar. 24. On Mar. 31, Park will travel to Emporia, Kan., for the Emporia Open. For the second time, Park travels to Fayette, Mo., for the Central Methodist Relays on Apr. 7. A week later Park travels to rival William Jewell on Apr. 14, then travels to Lawrence, Kan., for one of the premiere meet’s in the country the Kansas Relays from Apr. 19-21, hosted by the University of Kansas. Park will take another trip to Baker on Saturday, Apr. 28 for the Baker Open and the final meet of the regular season takes place on Saturday, May 12 at the Emporia State Open. The final meet of the season is the 2012 NAIA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field National Championship in Marion, Ind., from May 23-26.

Thomas Chelulei qualified for the 2011 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet in the mara-thon and finished seventh.

Julie Munter hopes to lead the Pirates to a successful season in the AMC and hopefully beyond to the 2012 NAIA Outdoor National Championship meet in Mar-ion, Ind.

2010 Honors

Daniel Tubei - Finished 18th at the NAIA National Championship meet

Daniel Tubei - Earned NAIA Men’s Cross Country All-America honors

Celebrating his 20th season as head men’s and women’s cross country coach, Brian Renshaw led his women’s squad to its sixth straight trip to the NAIA Women’s Cross Country National Championship meet and a conference championship and led his men’s team to a first-place team finish at the Haskell Invi-tational meet and a third-place finish at the AMC Championship meet. Both men’s and women’s teams improved throughout the season all the way until the final meet of the season in Ft. Vancouver, Wash. At the national meet, Daniel Tubei, finished 18th out of 326 runners and earned NAIA Men’s Cross Country All-America honors. As a team the women’s squad finished 21st out of 32 teams an improvement of two places from the 2009 National Championship race when they took home 23rd-place. To begin the 2010 season, Park competed against some NCAA Division I competition at the University of Kansas’ Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm. The men’s squad finished third, while the women came in second. The women’s team posted five runners in the top 25 spots and the men’s team placed five in the top 30, highlighted by Daniel Tubei’s third-place finish. The following week, Park traveled to Joplin, Mo. for the Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern. For the second straight race, Daniel Tubei took home third-place, but this time around he competed against 310 other runners compared to just 48 at the Bob Timmons Classic. The men’s team came in 22nd-place out of 34 teams. The women’s team placed 18th out of 36 teams and Alex Harkins put up the best time for the Pirates with her 50th-place fin-ish. Next up for Park was the Emporia State University Planet Sub Invite. Tubei had another terrific meet by finishing seventh ahead of many NCAA Divi-sion II runners and some of the top NAIA runners in the region. The men’s squad came in ninth-place and Niesha Morgan took seventh in the women’s race in her first collegiate meet. The women placed fifth out of 22 teams. On Oct. 9, Park made the trip just a few miles southwest to Lawrence, Kan. for the Haskell Invitational. Both teams performed exceptionally with each team taking home first-place for the first time in 2010. The men’s team placed first out of six teams, while the women finished ahead of seven other teams. All nine of Park’s men’s team placed in the top 30 and Daniel Tubei took home first-place. Niesha Morgan had a terrific meet for the Pirates with her second-place finish and Lindsey McDonald placed in the Top 10 with her ninth-place fin-ish. In the final meet of the regular season, Park traveled north to Lamoni, Iowa to compete in the Yellowjacket Classic hosted by Graceland University. The men’s team took home 8th-place and the women finished sixth. Daniel Tubei had another top five finish, by placing fourth and the women’s squad had four runners place in the top 40. Park’s Maria Tutu had the best finish of any Pirate on the women’s side with her 16th-place finish. At the AMC Cross Country championships, Park came in looking for its men’s team to qualify for nationals for the first time since 2005 and the women’s squad to qualify for nationals for the sixth straight time. As much as the Pirates wanted both of those to come true, they had to settle with just one. The women’s team placed six in the top 10 and every Park runner took home a 15th-place finish or better. With that superb race the women’s team took home first-place and qualified for its sixth straight National Championship appearance. Renshaw was named the AMC women’s cross country coach of the year and Morgan became the AMC Freshman of the Year. On the men’s side, Daniel Tubei won the race and qualified as an individual for the NAIA Men’s Cross Country National Championship meet. All eight of Park’s men’s runners placed in the Top 25, but McKendree and William Woods had better team finishes and the Pirates took third. On to the 55th Annual Men’s and 31st Annual Women’s NAIA Cross Country National Championships in Ft. Vancouver, Wash. It was a fine day to be a Pirate on Nov. 20, 2010, Daniel Tubei ran the men’s race in a time of 25:31 and an 18th-place finish. That finish earned him a spot on the 2010 NAIA Men’s Cross Country All-America Team. The women’s squad came in 21st place out of 32 teams and posted some solid times. P ark University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, of-fering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportuni-ties within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Bas-ketball Experience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Best Value, Nationwide Park continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality under-graduate and graduate degrees students desire at locations, times and delivery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diver-sity of degrees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Park was cited as offering “both proxim-ity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the student body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institu-tions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference) sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the National Association of Intercol-legiate Athletics (NAIA). The nine member institutions that make up the AMC include Park University (Parkville, Mo.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange University (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe State University (St. Louis, Mo.), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Wil-liams Baptist College (Walnut Ridge, Ark.), Benedictine University at Springfield (Springfield, Ill.) and William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.)

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercol-legiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participa-tion in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the confer-ences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
