The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic associa-tion. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwest-ern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA

Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from SoCon institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics pro-grams in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success. The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track & field, tennis, golf and softball.

Dave Blank

Director of Athletics Dave Blank begins his third year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2008-09 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first two years at Elon, he has ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructur-ing of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost and a plan for future facility improvements, including an al-ready completed renovation and expansion of the Latham Park baseball facility. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet consisting of athletics directors, senior woman administrators and faculty athletic representatives representing the nation’s multi-sport Division I conferences which will help shape the future of Division I athletics.

Under Blank’s direction, 12 of Elon’s 16 teams fashioned higher Southern Conference finishes during the 2007-08 season than they did during the 2006-07 campaign. What makes that fact even more impressive is that 10 Phoenix squads achieved a higher SoCon finish during the 2006-07 season than they did during the previous campaign. In 2007-08, the Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular season and tournament crowns en route to making the program’s third NCAA regional appearance in seven seasons. Also, Elon fell one mere victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis. During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis. The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007), men’s tennis (2007 and 2008) and baseball (2008) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade-point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority during his tenure at Drake, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and condition-ing facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. He restructured the Bulldog Club, which provides financial support for Drake athletics, resulting in a 90-percent increase in gifts. He also enhanced the marketing of Drake athletics to generate additional exposure and corporate donations. Blank served as chairman of the Missouri Valley Conference Championship Committee and was a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance Committee and Football Issues Committee. He received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation in 2005. Before moving to Drake in 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). Blank directed the CINO Club, increasing fiscal contributions to Coastal Carolina athletics by more than 200 percent. He spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003. Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996. A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from South Carolina in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in business administration (finance). He earned a master of science degree in business administration from South Carolina in 1986. Blank and his wife, Leslie, are the proud parents of four children – Dexter, Samantha, Dustin and Davis.

Dr. Leo LambertPresident

Leo M. Lambert became Elon’s eighth president in January 1999. Very early in his tenure, his responsibilities included com-pleting the Elon Vision strategic plan, including the construction of Rhodes Stadium and the opening of Belk Library. Today, Lambert’s work focuses on an ambitious new strategic vision which aims to place Elon, with a national reputation for engaged learning, among the nation’s best small, selective, private universities. Substantial progress has been achieved to-ward realizing this goal. The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened by endowed programs such as the Kenan Honors Fellowships, the Baird Pulitzer Prize Lectures and the Isabella Cannon Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Leader-ship. He has led efforts to more than double expenditures for library acquisitions, increase faculty sabbatical opportunities and improve Elon’s position in Division I athletics by joining the Southern Conference. Lambert has been committed to further strengthening Elon’s renowned programs of experiential learning, and the results have included top national rankings for Elon’s study abroad, volunteer service, undergraduate research and leadership programs.

Lambert has provided national leadership in efforts such as Campus Compact and Project Pericles, which encourage students to become civically engaged in their communities. During his tenure, the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business has attained AACSB International accreditation, the School of Communications has achieved accreditation by ACEJMC and the Elon University School of Law, which opened in Greensboro in 2006, achieved American Bar Association provisional approval in 2008. Recent new campus facilities have included the Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, the Academic Village, The Colonnades dining hall and residence halls, The Oaks residence complex and Belk Track and White Field. Lambert has written extensively about post-secondary education and is co-editor of a book about university teaching that was published by the Syracuse University Press in 2005. His alma mater, the State University of New York, awarded him an honorary doctorate of human letters in 2002 in recognition of exceptional achieve-ments in higher education. Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Christine Engel enters her first season as Elon’s head men’s and women’s cross country coach and assistant women’s indoor and outdoor track and field coach.

Engel comes to Elon after spending one year as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at Columbia University in New York City.

In her season at Columbia, Engel helped guide three student-athletes to All-Ivy League honors in cross country and two to All-Northeast Region accolades. She also coached Carmen Ballard to All-American honors and a 23rd-place NCAA finish in cross country. Her runners obtained five qualifying marks for the 2008 NCAA East Regional Championships as well.

Prior to her stint at Columbia, Engel spent three seasons as an assistant men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach at the University of San Francisco. During her time there, both the men’s and women’s programs turned in the most successful seasons in program history and achieved two runner-up finishes at the West Coast Conference Champion-ships.

Nine runners earned first team all-conference accolades while Engel coached Jeannine Hagedorn and the Dons to the high-est conference and NCAA Regional finishes in USF history. Two of her athletes were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.

Engel has also coached the Impala Racing Team, one of America’s top all-women’s club teams, where she helped six ath-letes qualify for the 2008 Olympic trials in the marathon.

She spent three years as the head cross country and indoor/outdoor track coach at West Morris Central High School in Chester, N.J. During her tenure at West Morris, Engel earned Morris Indoor Track Coach of the Year honors following the 2001-02 campaign from the Newark Star Ledger.

She also received the 2003 Cross Country Coach of the Year award from the same publication. Engel produced four all-state performers, 34 all-conference choices, 11 all-area selections and 17 all-county honorees in her three years at West Morris.

A two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection at Clemson University, Engel was a member of the Tigers’ school re-cord-setting 4x800-meter relay, distance medley relay and 4x1500-meter relay teams. She competed on Clemson’s ACC champion distance medley relay squad.

Engel fills the Tigers’ record books, ranking in the top-five in the 800-meter run and the mile and owning the Littlejohn Coli-seum record for the 800 meters. Her standout career was recognized with her inclusion on the Clemson University Athletic Wall of Fame.

A highly decorated prep star in New Jersey, Engel earned All-American honors at Mount Olive High School. She was named the 1992 Gatorade Athlete of the Year for New Jersey and was a six-time New Jersey Meet of Champions winner in the 1600 meters. Following her prep career, Engel was selected as one of New Jersey’s “Track and Field Athletes of the Decade.”

Engel earned her bachelor’s degree in parks, recreation and tourism manage-ment from Clemson in 1996. She holds a USATF Level One Certification.

Mark Elliston enters his third season at the helm of the Elon University women’s indoor and outdoor track and field teams.

The third head coach in the history of the Phoenix women’s indoor and outdoor track and field programs, El-liston will lead Elon into its ninth campaign overall this year and sixth in the Southern Conference. Of the league institutions, the Phoenix finished fifth indoors and fifth outdoors in the 2008 Southern Conference champion-ships.

During his tenure at Elon, Elliston has directed athletes to four SoCon individual titles - Jessica Clendenning (indoor and outdoor pole vault), Dominique Price (two-time champion indoor 60 meter hurdles), - and led the indoor and outdoor squads to 29 new school records. Elliston has also coached 14 all-conference performers, including the first all-conference relay team in program history, and one NCAA Regional qualifier. Elliston also coached Dominique Price to a first-place finish in the sprint hurdles at the 2007 SoCon Indoor Championships. He has also guided a total of 16 academic all-conference athletes and one academic all-American.

Prior to coming to Elon, Elliston served as the indoor and outdoor track and field coach for both the men’s and women’s programs at Lock Haven University for 17 seasons. Altogether at Lock Haven, Elliston coached seven Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference championship teams and 30 NCAA-II All-Americans, including three national champions. He also served the Eagles as their head coach in men’s and women’s cross country for 11 years, guiding a pair of athletes to All-America status.

Elliston’s Lock Haven squads have received academic team awards from the United States Track Coaches Association on seven occasions and from the United States Cross Country Coaches Association five times. The USTCA honored 18 Lock Haven athletes with individual academic accolades while the USCCCA recognized 13 Eagles during Elliston’s tenure.

No stranger to honors himself, Elliston was named the PSAC and NCAA-II East Regional Coach of the Year in both women’s indoor track and men’s out-door track and field in 2003. He was also dubbed the 1999 PSAC and NCAA-II East Regional Men’s Coach of the Year.

To achieve top condition for a high level of competition, Elon University student-athletes need a state-of-the-art weight room. A facility located in the Koury Center provides Phoenix teams with that weight room.

Aaron Walker, in his fourth year at Elon, heads up Elon’s strength and conditioning program. Previously, he served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of North Carolina. The 2002 East Caro-lina University graduate started 36 contests — including three bowl games — for the Pirates’ football squad before earning defensive MVP honors for the Assindia Cardinals of the German Football League.

Assisting Walker is Megan McCollum, who is in her fifth year with the Phoenix. McCollum came to Elon after serving an internship at Wake Forest where she helped implement strength and conditioning programs. She ob-tained her master’s degree in sports physiology from Texas A&M University in 2004. McCollum earned her bachelor’s degree from N.C. State University in 2002.

The goal of the training program is to enhance a student-athlete’s perfor-mance by improving their strength, power, agility and conditioning.

ELON STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Matt Roden is in his third season as the assistant track and field coach at Elon University and focuses primarily on the throwers. Roden came to Elon from Conway, S.C. where he assisted the strength and conditioning coach and the throws coach at Coastal Carolina University.

In all, 13 school records were broken in the throwing events during the 2007-08 indoor/outdoor track seasons.

Roden spent four years as an assistant coach and clinic coordinator for the Mjolnir Track and Field Club in Conway. He planned and coordinated activities for the Annual Throws Clinic. Roden also directed sessions on weightlifting and nutritional supplementation as well as hammer and discus throw techniques

The 2005 UNC Wilmington graduate competed on the track and field team that captured the 2005 Colonial Ath-letic Association championship. A four-time All-CAA honoree, Roden earned the conference title in the hammer throw in 2005. He was twice named CAA Athlete of the Week in 2005 and earned UNCW team field MVP honors. He set UNCW records in the hammer while outperforming the closest conference competition by 15 feet. Roden received NCAA All-East honors with his performance at the 2005 IC4A Track and Field Championship.

Roden spent his first two collegiate seasons at Coastal Carolina and took the 2002 Big South Conference ham-mer throw title.

Roden has his USATF Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching Certification in the throws events. He is also a USATF As-sociate Level Official and is a member of the National Throws Coaches Association.
