I hope you are all enjoying a lovely weekend. Let’s hope it stays fine for the rest of the weekend and especially for the BBQ at Keith and Lyn Stapley’s tomorrow afternoon for a reunion with Baulkham Hills Club’s first exchange student, Yardi and his family from Indonesia. Last week Mark Kyte who is an expert on Public Speaking and Presentation Skills expanded on how we can overcome our nerves and
become confident in getting up in front of people. Monday night our District Governor David Rands and his wife Ann will be visiting our club for their scheduled meeting with us. I hope to see as many members as possible at the meeting to support DG David. A reminder to all Board members to please be at the Tavern for a short
Board meeting starting at 5.30pm prior to our normal Club meeting. Enjoy your day. Pres Pen.
What would it take to change the world? Rotary's 1.2 million members believe it starts with a commitment to Service Above Self. In more than 34,000 clubs worldwide, you'll find members volunteering in communities at home and abroad to support education and job training, provide clean water, combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, and eradicate polio. The family of Rotary extends beyond individual Rotarians and Rotary clubs to include other service-minded people who help with the organization's work. Groups such as Rotaract, Interact, and Rotary Community Corps serve side by side with sponsor clubs, using their diverse skills to improve the quality of life in their
communities.

Summary of Last week’s meeting
Guest Speaker - Manner of Speaking (Presentation Skills Coaching)
On Monday night we were treated to the pleasure of hearing from public speaking coach and trainer, Mark Kyte, who came along to talk to members about how to improve our public speaking. Mark, who has had long term involvement with Toastmasters, challenged us in the first couple of minutes by asking if any of us knew which Queenslander had recently become the Crowned Champion of Public Speaking. I’m not sure that any of us in the room knew that it was Jock Elliott, or that he was actually the second Queenslander to win this cherished award – the first being Mark Hunter (always knew those Queenslander could talk the hind leg off a donkey!!!!); neither did we realise that Mark was demonstrating one of the techniques of public speaking that he later explained to us. We found out that Mark had an interesting item listed on his “bucket list” and that was to perform as a stand up comedian; an item that he was actually able to cross off his list after completing a Comedy Course back in May which involved a weekend of training, which included developing skills on how to write and perform a joke. The weekend culminated in the opportunity to perform in the Comedy Club in front of a live audience. Mark discussed the similarities between being a stand up comedian in a Club and public speaking in a variety of settings. Something that he said that he had learned that was useful in either situation was about expectations. This related to the expectations of both the speaker / performer and those of the audience. Mark pointed out that although most speakers become very nervous about how they will be received, expecting the worst, this was in fact quite unnecessary, as nine times out of ten the audience want you to succeed (unless, of course, you are a politician). The important thing is to get up and give it a go and like everything else keep practicing in order to develop your presentation skills and most importantly your level of confidence. Mark offered the following three major tips to good public speaking:
1. Address the Elephant in the Room – Find out what is on the minds of the audience, address this,
which then free the audience up to listen to what you have to say. i.e., if you are addressing a
business meeting and people are worried about something impacting on their job – start at this point
and get their attention before moving on to all the strategies that are being put in place to improve
things.
2. Build the connection with your audience – No-one has “a right” to expect people to listen to them.
First you have to develop rapport in order for the audience to warm to you and want to hear what you
have to say.
3. Start out with a bang – Say something different to all those speakers who have gone before – don’t
be a boring replica of all the others; make an impact and get their attention – tell a story or ask a
question (remember the “which Queenslander had recently become the Crowned Champion of Public
Speaking” question at the beginning of Mark’s presentation).
Above all remember that it takes practice to become a good speaker – even top comedians such as Robin Williams and Seinfeld spend hours writing their jokes and then practising / testing them on a range of different audiences – it is said that they can work for months to get 5 minutes of usable material and public speaking is no different. Take notice of good speakers, watch what it is that they do that makes them good. Practice in front of a good friend who will give both positive feedback to boost your confidence and constructive pointers for improvement – although Mark recommends that you make sure that when receiving advice, it is better to only listen to those who know how to do it well, or you may end up picking up others’ bad habits.

It will be interesting to identify any changes in the style of any of our Club members presenting to the Club. We hopefully can look forward to numerous original openings; lots of rapport; and immediate confrontations of any elephants that come along to the meetings. Thank you, Mark, for this opportunity to build on our skills.
Club Service Report – PP Alan Jones Barefoot Bowling has been booked for Monday 31 October at Baulkham Hills Bowing Club, 6.00 for 6.30pm. Cost for bowling is $10.00 per head followed by a meal in the bistro for $12.00. Partners, family and friends welcome. We have accepted an invitation to provide the catering for a horse show at the Hawkesbury Showground on 26/27 November, the details of the invitation follow. The ESH Championships are on again at the Hawkesbury Show Grounds on Saturday, 26th November 2011. You will recall last year, in the middle of gearing up for the show, Emma had a serious accident and suddenly the show was seriously downgraded. We had some 300 entries at that time however everyone understood the position and agreed to wait on this year. We anticipate this year will be bigger with serious sponsors already jumping in. Ford Australia, airlines, holiday resorts, feed companies etc. The judges for the show are coming from Interstate and that immediately increases the opportunity for competitors. We believe we will be looking at about 1000/1200 people on the day with a good many camping on the show grounds. This year we are looking at a day/twilight show, due to the numbers, therefore we are looking for catering for early breakfast, lunch which could go well into the afternoon. We have been contacted by the Australia Saddle Horse Association as they have indicated they would like to "piggy back" on our weekend by holding the Australian Saddle Horse Championships at Hawkesbury on the Sunday (27th). ( We hold the rights of the Showground for the entire weekend and as we don't need the Sunday, this would fit in well. This proposal goes before their Committee next week for approval. If it comes off it could well be a double header for your Club were you inclined. We may also involve other club(s) to assist us for the two days, there is also an opportunity for us the take caravans or other accommodation and make a weekend of it, more information to follow as the plan comes together. Residents Kits – The United Church are distributing welcome kits to 150 residents in Beaumont Hills at a BBQ on 28 August, the board has agreed to supplying them with our kits. This will be a good promotional opportunity as well as filling a gap in our market.
International Services Report – Rtn. Bobby Redman Bobby spoke about the Group Study Exchange (GSE) program, reminding members that in addition to the Team Leader position that Rotary are seeking to fill, they are also looking for nominations for the outgoing GSE Team and host families for 6 – 7 days in late March for each of the 5 or 6 incoming GSE Team members. If you have anyone that you would like to nominate or are interested in hosting a Team Member please contact Bobby who will pass the information along to the organisers. Miriam Jacka who is the Coordinator for Donations in Kind (DIK), has been approached with an offer of involvement from our Club members, as per the Club Plan. Miriam notified the Club through Bobby that a container was being packed to be sent out, on Saturday 27
th August, to Vanuatu in support of the SANMA
Frangipani Association (SFA); an association made up of parents, caregivers and people with a disability who are committed to promote disability awareness and education; working with children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities including autism, intellectual and developmental delays, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, hearing, speech and visual impairment. Bobby, in conjunction with her employer, Interaction Disability Services will be preparing some resources and staff training manuals to include in the container, and a request was put to the members for assistance in loading the container. Miriam did note, that if the Club

members were unable to help in this instance there were frequent opportunities to assist, as work was being completed on most weekends. Finally, Bobby brought to the attention of attending Club Members the opportunity to visit India through the Rotary Friendship Exchange with District 3040, India, in late January / early February 2012. Full details can be viewed in last week’s copy of the Weekly Bulletin.
Toast to Overseas Rotary Club
The Aarong Dhaka Rotary Club in Rotary District 3860, Bangladesh was charted on the 24

Rotary Foundation - Hoe a Matching Grant can make a difference. From 2008 to 2010 the Rotary club of Beecroft and Espirito Santo Vanuatu implemented a water supply project in Mota Lava Vanuatu that linked 5 villages with 5 kms of water pipe to supply clean drinking water to 1700 villagers. A plus from the program was that the villagers learned skills to enable them to connect the 5
th
village to the system. Beecroft contributed $5000 and Santo just $100 but with $5,000 from D6940 USA and $200 from D9680 a Rotary Foundation match of $7,750 was gained for a total funding of about AUD$23,000. The Matching Grant allows Clubs to combine with Clubs all over the world to obtain funds that will be matched by The Rotary Foundation to falcate life changing projects. Please check with the D9680 Grants Chair to learn about the eligibility guidelines and the best way of dealing with the 100 Future Vision Plan Districts as there are some complications when FVP and non FVP Districts try to engage. But only until 2013-14. This is just one of the many examples of how the Foundation's humanitarian grants programs can make positive changes by reducing disease risk by providing fresh clean water.
History of Rotary in India
RI Presidents from India
Nitish Laharry 1962-63
Rajendra K. Saboo 1991-92
Kalyan Banerjee 2011-12 Calcutta was the home town for the first Rotary club in the mainland of Asia. R.J.Combes, the manager of a steel products company while on a business trip to U.S.A. was so impressed by the "Friendship, fellowship, and service" aspects of the movement called Rotary that he wanted to introduce the idea to his friends in Calcutta also. There was no difficulty for him to convince enough people and convene the first meeting on 26 September, 1919. The new club was chartered just after three months of the first meeting, on the new year day of 1920 to be exact. All the twenty charter members were non-Indians. What have we learned in 2,066 years
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance." - Cicero - 55 BC
So, evidently nothing.
