Hello Everyone, This is a very exciting time for me, this being my first message to all of you (other than at Changeover). The situation is still feeling a little surreal to me but I’m sure it will start to feel real…very soon!!!!! Before we go any further I would really like to thank PP Penny for the great job she has done as President over the past 12 months. She has worked really hard and has been an inspiration to me and I would suspect, to many of you too. She will certainly be a hard act to follow. I hope you all enjoyed yourself at Changeover Night. I had a wonderful time in spite of my nervousness, and would like to thank all those who helped to make it the successful evening that it was. These include Alan Jones, Wilf Van Emmerik; Gordon Scoble; and of course Penny Hill, who brought it all together so well on the night. You should all pat yourselves on the back for the fantastic job that you did. The Dural Country Club is a lovely venue and the room was just perfect for our function. All in all a great night. On Monday night, the Board will be launching the new Club Plan. We listened to the ideas that were put forward in the survey that many of you completed earlier in the year and have been planning an exciting year ahead with which I’m sure that you will all be very happy. I’m looking forward to seeing you all there at my first meeting as President. Warm regards, President Bobby Redman

Page 3 VOCATIONAL WHAT AM I UP TO NOW BOBBY REDMOND Started in Banking as a teenager, then took up Nurse training and became a registered nurse, got married and then joined the fashion industry as a buyer. Became a single mother and worked various jobs in the hospitality industry to fit the timetable of child raising. Remarried and immigrated to Australia where I took up a clerical job with Berger Paints in the Automotive Paints division. This led to ever increasing responsibility with Berger and then with Repco, rising to State Manager. The call for a higher education beckoned and I enrolled at University achieving high standards and a degree in Psychology. I then worked with children with various psychological problems and ultimately with my current employer Independent Disability Services.

Rotary’s role in India’s success against polio draws global media coverage The role played by Rotary International in helping India stop transmission of the wild poliovirus generated strong media coverage worldwide. News of India’s milestone achievement of going one year without polio in January garnered more than 100 media placements that featured Rotary, representing nearly 250 million online visitors and a print circulation of over 10 million readers. Nearly 95 percent of the coverage of the milestone – by the Associated Press, The Economist, Financial Times, New York Times, Reuters, and other major media – mentioned Rotary’s leading role in the achievement. In February, the BBC featured a news story that highlighted Rotary’s role in India. The BBC also carried several news stories, blog posts, and Twitter feeds related to Rotarians participating in the country’s National Immunization Days. India’s removal from the list of polio-endemic countries by the World Health Organzation was announced at Polio Summit 2012 by Ghulam Nabi Azad, the country’s minister of Health and Family Welfare. Anticipating India’s milestone achievement, the RI Communications Group launched an aggressive communications campaign to increase understanding of Rotary’s leadership role in the country’s success against polio and the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, working with the GPEI partners, Rotary public image coordinators, and others.

Rotary Foundation Thought for the Week

History of The Rotary Foun dation

In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph proposed that an endowment be set up “ for the purpose of doing good in the wor ld.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, i t was renamed The Rotary Foundat ion, and i t became a d is t inc t ent i t y wi th in Rotary Internat ional . Five Trustees, inc luding Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest , manage, and adminis ter a l l of i ts property . . . as a s ingle trus t, for the fur therance of the purposes of RI .” Two years la ter, the Foundat ion made i ts f i rst grant of $500 to the Internat ional Soc iety for Cr ippled Chi ldren. The organizat ion, created by Rotar ian Edgar F. “Daddy” Al len, later grew into the Easter Seals. The Great Depress ion and World W ar I I both impeded the Foundat ion’s growth, but the need for last ing wor ld peace generated great postwar in terest in i ts development. Af ter Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harr is, d ied in 1947, contr ibut ions began pour ing into Rotary Internat ional , and the Paul Harr is Memor ia l Fund was created to bui ld the Foundat ion. That year , the f irst Foundat ion program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassador ia l Scholarships – was establ ished. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange , Awards for Technical Tra in ing, and Grants for Act iv i t ies in Keeping with the Object ive of The Rotary Foundat ion, which was later cal led Matching Grants . The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3 -H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a par t of that program in 1980. Pol ioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for Univers ity Teachers . The f i rst peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conf l ic t studies programs . Throughout th is t ime, support of the Foundat ion grew tremendous ly. Since the f irs t donat ion of $26.50 in 1917, i t has received contr ibut ions tota l ing more than $1 b i l l ion. More than $70 mil l ion was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one mil l ion indiv iduals have been recognized as Paul Harr is Fel lows – people who have given $1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that amount contr ibuted in their name. Such strong support , a long wi th Rotar ian involvement wor ldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundat ion as i t cont inues i ts v i ta l work for in ternat ional understanding and wor ld peace.

Joke of the Day

Busloads of politicians were driving down a country road, when suddenly the bus ran off the road and crashed into an old farmer's barn. The old farmer got off his tractor and went to investigate. Soon he dug a hole and buried the politicians. A few days later, the local sheriff came out, saw the crashed bus and asked the old farmer where all the politicians had gone. The old farmer told him he had buried them. "Lordly, were they ALL dead?" asked the sheriff. The old farmer said, "Well, some of them said they weren't, but you know how them crooked politicians love to lie."

Surprise Email A Minnesota couple decided to vacation to Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail. Meanwhile.....somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who was called home to glory following a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted. The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read: To: My Loving Wife Subject: I've Arrived Date: 16 May 2003 I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as uneventful as mine was.

P.S. Sure is hot down here!
