This year marks theestablishment of the Festivals
new identity as an annualevent. To celebrate this we
have assembled a wonderfularray of significant ar tists and
productions from around theworld, representing our view of ar t a sa pluralistic reflec tion of a world in
the throes of massive change, while stillgrappling with the fundamental questions
always posed on our human journey.
Questions of faith are posed inMassby Leonard Bernstein, of the way
we communicate to each other in PintersThe Caretaker, of the nature of beauty
in Gardeniaand the beauty of languageitself in Bloodland . Be enthral led by the
abilit y of Ennio Morricone to mapour emotions with his glorious
film scores, be moved by thehumanity and comic genius of JamesThirre, and be surprised and delightedby the extraordinary sights and soundsof Barrio, our late night party precinct.Encounter the familiar as the unfamiliarin I Am Not An Animal , and be transportedby the sheer beauty of the Hill iardEnsemble. Writers Week brings an excitingarray of brilliant minds spanning literature
for all ages and persuasions. Our visual ar ts programchallenges and shifts us outof our comfort zones, makesus consider new options, amuses, bemuses, subsumesand ex hilarates.
Art is our way of puttingform to the inchoate andabstracting the real; it is
transformative, alchemical, mysterious and obscure. It reflects aboveall our collective will to unpack theprofound mystery of our lives, to bear
wit ness to ex istence and confront ourdemons while celebrating our angels. There is much here to discover, andI look forward to sharing these manytreasures with you.

There was theatre before Krzysztof Warlikowski and thenthere is theatre after Krzysztof Warlikowski.
Europes great avant-garde direc tor, Warlikowski, and one of Can adasfinest theatre-makers, Wajdi Mouawad, put a controversial 21st centur y spin on
Tennessee Williams' much-loved American masterpiece. The result: a product ionthat divided Paris. At the centre of the maelstrom is Frances most enduringand respected film actress, Isabelle Huppert, who takes to the stage for the
famous Odon - Thtre de L Europe in a brave and haunting performance.
This is Streetcarlike youve never seen before and un likely to see again.Find out what all the fuss is about.

Umbrellas become jellyfish, c lothes take on a mind of theirown, ghost-like elephants wander and c andles wont snuff
in James Thirres world of endless invention.
One of Europes most versatile ar tists, t he acrobat, clown, poetand magician uses his impish talent and extraordinary physicalprowess to transform everyday objects into magical dream-like
spectacles that captivate, charm and inspire.
In this mesmerising new large-scale solo show, Thirre isRaoul, a man without beginning or end, who tumbles through
a series of utopian fanta sies where acrobatics, mysterioustransformat ions, music and dance collide a world which
is at once recognisable and yet utterly alien.

A giant sheet of traditional calligraphers rice paper is unfurled, brushes are drawn and ink is uncapped. With a control andart iculation verging on the superhuman , Cloud Gate DanceTheatres performers bring the beauty of calligraphy to life.
One of the finest dance companies in the world,Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan rises to the challenge
set by lauded choreographer Lin Hwai-min, dancing on a ricepaper inspired platform tilted at eight degrees .
Dancers seem to hover as they jump and spin withmovement reflecting the virtuosity of chi kung, internal
martial arts, contemporary dance and meditation. Inspired,Lin and dancers create an abstract work of beauty and
magic that stands sublimely on its own.

Theres big and then t heres Bernstein. From West Side Storyto Candide, celebratedclassical composer Leonard Bernstein knew how to make a big song and dance.
Bernstein regarded Mass, a kaleidoscopic mix of music, dance and theatre featuringa symphony orchestra, a rock band, a choir and opera singers, as his definingachievement. Commissioned for the opening of t he Kennedy Center in 1971,
Massfeatures a small village of performers and a supremely charismatic lead inthe Celebrant, performed by t he great US gospel singer Jubilant Sykes.
The spectacle of Massis underpinned by a profound statement of human fa iththat is explosive, cathartic and ultimately uplifting.

In an intimate portrait of identity and self-revelation, six ordinary men take to the stage. Each man has his own story: sometimes funny, sometimes overwhelming, always poignant. As they navigate the hinterland between masculine and feminine, truth and artifice, past
and present, their personal drama s are played out in a bold, yet deeply tender mix of dance, song, theatre and cabaret to the music of Aznavour, Dalida and Ravel.
A revelatory new work from the lauded company that brought Adelaide the much-lovedshows La Tristeza Compliceand Iets op Bach, Gardeniais not a work of fict ion. The joythe performers have in living their dreams is palpable - falsies, fake eyelashes, glitter,
gloss and all - plunging the audience with heart-rending generosity intoa moving moment of humanit y.

Two trucks stand stationary at the side of a road.Goods are being exchanged: a small group of young womendestined for a sickening, hellish end. Hungarian director Kornl
Mundrucz fashions human trafficking, pornographyand sects into gruelling, extreme theatre. This explosive piece
lurches between deep depravity and disturbing tenderness, challenging audiences to judge for themselves what is right
and what is wrong in a small, psychotic world.

In an expanse of red dust pounded by the hot Arnhem Land sun, a telegraph pole protrudesfrom the earth; a symbol of the scar that the modern world has left on an ancient community.
This is Cherishs place. This is where she hides away from the real world, spea ks to imag inedfriends and is v isited by the ghosts of relatives long gone. Then, on a day l ike any other, Cherish
unearths the body of a dead boy, opening fresh wounds within an already torn community.
Featuring an Indigenous cast of 12 including established urban actors as well as tradi tional Yolngustorytellers, the production fuses traditional languages and Pidgin English as well as danceand song to tell t he story. Bloodland promises to be a unique work of scale and significance.

Austral ias leading dance theatre company Force Majeure takes inspiration from issuesraised in Christos Tsiolkas controversial book The Slapin a provocati ve new workexploring contemporary attitudes to raising children.
In a society where parents have less chi ldren, less time, more money and many moreopinions on how to produce the perfect child, are we creating an environment that w ill
ultimately lead to a future generation with more hang ups than perfections?Or is this actually an ongoing and age-old dilemma?
In an excit ing first-time collaboration between Force Majeures Kate Champion and SydneyTheatre Companys Andrew Upton, Never Did Me Any Harmuses Force Majeure's trademark
synthesis of fluid movement, images and real-life interviews to deliver an emotional, humorousand insightful work that cannot fail to resonate with all who were once children.

This is a story of three teenage boys. Theyre going to the schooldance. Theyre on a mission. But they are losers. These are theawkward kids. The invisible teens. Fuelled by a diet of raging

navigating complex waters with little success. With a unique performative voice, th is is a h ighly personal

The Australian String Quartet opens its program with awork by t he doyen of Austral ian composers, Peter Sculthorpe,
inspired by the starkly beautiful landscape of Kakadu andits inhabitants. From Australias unique interior to the sunlit
uplands of old Bohemia: few composers wrote music in a llgenres which radiated such spontaneous warmth and charmas Antonin Dvok. Even by his exalted standards, the Op 51
String Quartet is full of gorgeous melodies where exuberanceis masterfully fused with poignant tenderness.
The program culminates with one of Dmitri Shostakovichstowering chamber masterpieces: t he Piano Quintet, Op 57,
composed during the fateful year 1940 and described asa last ray of hope for Russia. It is a work of grand sy mphonic
proportions combining the composers hallmark skittishhumour and austere dignity with an underlying tension.
