Proud to support a great eventWelcome to the Adelaide

Motorsport Festival – a four-daycelebration of South Australia’s

motorsport. This year’s festival kicks off our

summer events calendar, and is expected to attract more than 700 participating vehicles and nearly 2100 participants and crew. Celebrations will start with crowds flocking to a parade of F1 cars at the traditional Gouger Street Party, which attracted 6000 people in 2016.

I encourage locals and visitors to takethis opportunity to explore Adelaide’s laneway bars and award-winning restaurants featuring South Australia’s premium food and wine. If you venture out of the city, you will discover why South Australia was recognised by Lonely Planet as one of the top five regions in the world to visit in 2017.

The South Australian Government is proud to support the Adelaide Motorsport Festival. Thank you to the event organisers for putting together another outstanding Adelaide event, and I wish this year’s competitors the very best of luck.

historic rally cars such as an Audi Group B rally car. A field of 14 historic sports sedans with Adelaide history is also expected to be a popular addition.

Three core events make up the festival — the entry-level Prima Tour, now in its second year, (December 7), the Adelaide Rally (December 7-9) and the Victoria Park Sprint (December 9-10).

A traditional Gouger Street party on the evening of December 8 is scheduled to include a parade of Formula 1 cars through the city from Victoria Park.

Shannons Adelaide Rally start list boasts 260 entries across all categories, making it Australia’s largest tarmac rally-style event this year.

The Victoria Park Sprint, on the purpose-built section of the current Adelaide 500 circuit, will include on-track, display and demonstration events.

birthday of AMG, the racing arm of Mercedes-Benz, and both manufacturers will feature prominently in on-track demonstrations and displays.

While last year’s theme reunited Formula 1drivers and their cars, this year’s festival aims to expand the focus to rally and motorcycle disciplines. Defending ARC champion Taylor will be joined by rally great Neal Bates, while popular Irish driver Frank Kelly will showcase the skills that have made him a rally sensation in his “Baby Blue” Ford Escort.

Lowndes is scheduled to drive the most powerful Formula 1 car ever built, the Benetton B186, as well as a rare Ferrari, while fellow Supercars pilot and Adelaide export Tim Slade will steer a

Bowe will demonstrate a Shell Ford Sierra that was part of his famous tandem with Dick Johnson during the late 1980s and a 1974

drivers involved will be Ford’s CamWaters and Bathurst 1000 andAdelaide 500 champion NickPercat in a McLaren 675LT.

Bayliss and his Ducati back on trackBut he has warned it is not for the faint-

hearted, leaving some passengers with wobbly legs when they realise the speed and physicality involved in riding at such speeds.

“I’m really looking forward to it,” Bayliss toldThe Advertiser. “We’ve got a special bike with a seat out the back.

“I’ve got a real kick out of it.“It’s a bit like a hot lap in the V8s. When

people come off, some of them don’t know what to think.

“Some of them are happy and some of themare just freaked out.”

After finishing up on the bike, Bayliss dabbled in four-wheel racing in touring cars and Porsche Carreras.

But he came to the realisation that it was

bikes that were in his blood and he now serves as an ambassador for Ducati, travels the country for various motor shows and works as much in the background as putting his talent on display.

Bayliss wouldn’t have it any other way: he remains connected both to the sport he loves and his beloved Ducati bikes.

“I did a little bit of that (car racing) but I guess in the end I’m a bike person,” Bayliss said. “I did enjoy having a little bit of a steer but you soon realise that to be up there and get the last bit out of the car it’s hard to compete with guys who have been doing it all of their lives.

“That’s just how it is. So I’m still heavily involved with Ducati, sometimes go overseas, and the shows are good.”

THREE-time Superbike world champion Troy Bayliss is back where he now realises he belongs: in the seat of his famous Ducati motorbike, taking it to breakneck speeds.

Bayliss, 48, who won the rider’s title in 2001on a Ducati 998, 2006 on a 999 and 2008 on a 1098 will turn back time as he does full demonstrations on his old championship bikes around Victoria Park during the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, and he promises to a treat to watch.

He will also give fans a chance to go for a ride with him on a specially designed Ducati which has room for a passenger behind him.

AUSSIE greats will combine withinternational legends when this year’sAdelaide Motorsport Festival roars tolife on the city’s streets this week.

Six-time Bathurst 1000 winnerCraig Lowndes, touring cars veteran John Bowe, three-time Superbike world champion Troy Bayliss and the nation’s youngest Australian Rally Champion Molly Taylor headline the list of Australian stars who will pair with an array of classic and Adelaide Grand Prix-era Formula 1 cars.

New-look rally is bigger, better

from the entry-level Prima Tour to parades of rare and exotic marques including Ferrari, BMW, Audi, Aston Martin and Mercedes.

The 30 special stages almost doubles last year’s total of 16, which was contested across two days.

Stages centre on technical stretches in the Hills, as well as featured venues including Collingrove Hillclimb, Mallala Motorsport Park and a final circuit on Saturday evening at Victoria Park.

No longer the “Classic” Adelaide Rallythat became a staple of closed

Adelaide Hills roads, this year’sname change aims to reflect theevent’s evolution and growth inlate-model entries.

As well as the three-day rally, fans will be treated to a final-day

celebration of rallying yesteryearwith a spirited demonstration of

historic cars at Victoria Park.An original Renault R5 Turbo in

period livery that raced in the Rally of Italy promises to bring back memories of the Group B era.

While not an original, the Quattro is an accurate replica of the iconic 1984 car, with 600hp and all-wheel-drive.

Toyotas will also be in strong numbers. As well as Bates’s Celica GT4, there will also

be a genuine factory WRC GT4 from 1997 that was raced by Freddy Loix, and won at Spa and Condroz. Spectators will also be able to get up close to the Corolla that was a spare car for Spanish two-time World Rally Champion Carlos Sainz.

S C O T T W A L S H

A WHOPPING 30 special stages across three competition days plus a field boasting a global star and 2016’s Australian champion headlines this year’s new-look Adelaide Rally.

And, for the first time, a collection of historicrally cars will feature on Sunday’s closing day of the Adelaide Motorsport Festival at Victoria Park in a nostalgia-rich Rally Legends on-track demonstration.

Irishman and international fan favourite Frank Kelly will bring the style to this year’s rally in his “Baby Blue” Ford Escort in Category S.

And Molly Taylor, who lastyear became both the youngest driver and first woman to be crowned Australian Rally Champion, will take on the tarmac challenge alongside co-driver Bill Hayes in her Subaru WRX in the Main Tour.

Molly’s mother, veteran co-driver Coral Taylor, will again navigate for four-time Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates as they contest the Modern competition in their 1994 Toyota Celica.

Proving that driving ability runs in the family, the 2017 field also features Joe Ricciardo, father of Formula 1 driver Daniel, in his 1974 Porsche 911, and Marc Percat, whose son Nick is a Supercars Bathurst and Adelaide 500 champion.

In all, this year’s Adelaide Rally will feature260 entered cars across 13 categories, ranging

Ever imagined what it would be like to drive on Mars?

What about driving on Mars in an all-new BMW X3, the incredible sports activity vehicle which had its Australian launch in Melbourne on November 11? This is an automobile which is sure to prove a massive winner for the German company.

BMW is offering motoring fans the opportunity to drive on Mars at the Adelaide Motor Sport Festival. Well, sort of. Fans can taste the experience in a virtual reality test drivestation, a contraption similar in size to a telephone box.

The driver will wear goggles to not only enjoy the feel of the new X3, but also a

A D E L A I D E M OTO R S P O R T F E S T I VA L 2 0 1 76

Take a virtual test drive (on Mars) in a sporty BMWsensation of driving the exceptional vehicle on another planet.

There is the intro Mars Space Station, a driver briefing, Mars Canyon, a tunnel with the interior ambient light and adaptive headlights semi-aut driving, Mars flatland and Outro. Plain and simple, it will be fun.

“I tested the reality station at the X3 launchin Melbourne and immediately asked if we could have it at the Motoring Festival,” BMW representative Ella Trimbell said.

“It is really cool and a great insight how technology is advancing. I imagine the station will prove extremely popular.”

The chance for a reality drive will be help attract fans to the BMW show area at the Festival, not that the X3 will have issues attracting plenty of interest. This is a wonderful product and a terrific advertisement for the

brand in the hotly contested mid-sized luxury SUV market. The fact the Australian launch quickly followed the international release in Europe is evidence of the importance of the SUV market here and BMW has backed a winner with this updated model.

There are so many desirableoptions in the car. The personal co-pilot with BMW’s semi autonomous driving, gesture control, wireless charging in the centre console, head-up display and a 12.3” multi-function instrumental digital display in front of the driver.

Speed limit information is completely accurate as it uses a camera, there is parking assistant plus and that means fully automated

parking, and heated and ventilated seats. A key feature is the BMW Connected Drive+.

It keeps you connected and in command ofevery part of your life, all from behind

the wheel. It is an intelligent systemthat keeps your vehicle connected

with the outside world. Digitalservices, smart apps and driverassistance systems provide morecomfort, more entertainmentand more safety.

The X3 3.0d certainly deliverswith its 3.0-litre turbocharged

diesel engine and eight-speed sportsautomatic transmission.

Australians must wait until mid 2018 toobtain the BMW M40i, its impressive power reflected in the acceleration to 100km/h in 4.8secs.

It is really cool and a great insight how

technology is advancing

Embracing Italy’s finestwe’ve got in racing. “At the Bathurst 12 Hour, when we won it in the 488, the electronics in the car was quite incredible.

“I hope to get some sort of practice, (otherwise) it’s jump in, there’s the steering wheel, brake pedal – and go and have fun.”

The Prima Tour is not an official competition but with fellow Supercar drivers Tim Slade, Nick Percat and Cameron Waters also in the field, expect someone to leave with bragging rights.

“No doubt we all talk up about how muchfun and relaxed and the enjoyment we get out of it, but as soon as we get in the car, put the

helmet on, in anything that has a steering wheel attached to it, the competitive nature will come out,” he says.

“To do something like this, under the conditions that we’ve got, will be really exciting.

“I love having challenges and driving different things and I’ll put this on my bucket list. To share it with my wife will be quite special.”

Lowndes will be driving at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

He will also take a rare Ferrari FXX in a parade from Victoria Park to Gouger Street to kick off festivities being held on Friday night.

Lowndes will again showcase the FXX during the Ferrari Spettacolo session at Victoria Park on Sunday.

“It’s one which I’m really excited to drive,”he says.

Lowndes will be travelling to the motorsport festival fresh from the final Supercars round held a fortnight prior in Newcastle.

He says the busy Supercars schedules means it can be hard to accept invitations to motoring festivals, so he is relishing the chance to drive in the Prima Tour and see parts of Adelaide beyond the Victoria Park circuit.

“There’s no doubt there’s going to be some exotic and beautiful cars there,” he says.

“Normally (when in Adelaide) we’re running around and doing the Supercars side of it.

“We don’t get enough time to spend over there and hopefully all the people will enjoy what they get to see – exotic and great cars, great history.

“It’s a festival of sport and it’s a lot about having some really nice, exotic cars that you don’t see day-to-day, or at all.

“It showcases the quality of cars we have inAustralia.”

V8 motorsport legend Craig Lowndesis well known for his racing successdriving both of Australia’s rivalmarques, Holden and Ford.

But the multiple Supercarschampion and Bathurst winner will this month pilot one of Italy’s finest – Ferrari – as one of the headline drivers in the Adelaide Rally’s Prima Tour on Thursday.

Lowndes is no stranger to the Ferrari brand, having won the Bathurst 12 Hour race earlier this year in a Ferrari 488 GT3 with his co-drivers, Supercars teammate Jamie Whincup and top Ferrari driver Toni Vilander.

What will be strange about his Prima Tourdrive, however, will be his navigator – wife Lara Lowndes.

“It will be the first time Lara and I will team up,” Lowndes says.

“You need a co-driver, and she’s got a World Rally background (having previously worked as a driver co-ordinator).

“I’m really looking forward to the first time of her telling me where to go.”

The Lowndes team will be in the Ferrari GTC4Lusso T is the fastest Ferrari four-seater made to date.

It features a 3.9-litre V8 turbo which punches out a maximum of 600hp at 7500rpm.

“Really for us, the cars are very different inthe sense of the electronics that they have,” Lowndes says.

“The electronics, traction control, the ABSstability (in Ferraris) are very different to what

and having a double dose of courage as he flings his lightweight two-wheel drive car around in an aggressive way that would leave other drivers in the ditch.

He began racing stock cars as a nine-year-old,following his father’s foot steps, and didn’t turn to rally until he was in his late 20s.

When he drives, he channels his sporting hero,Finnish rally driver Ari Vatanen.

“He drove with his heart, not his head,” Kellysays. “The way it should be.” He considers his courage, or his “balls”, as the greatest part of his armoury.

“Never leave home without them,” he says. “In

fact, they’re the most crucial part of rallying.“If I forget them I might as well go home.”Kelly’s place in the field is a major drawcard for

the event, which has been renamed the Adelaide Rally and dropped the longstanding “Classic” from its name to better reflect a big growth in modern, exotic and showroom categories.

HE has become a YouTube favourite andhas fans all over the world, rally driverFrank Kelly, but the Irishman is notyour typical motorsport hero.

The thing about Kelly is that it is notnecessarily his speed that is admired, it is the way he punishes his beloved little “Baby Blue” Ford Escort and the hair-raising manner in which he races.

People line up to watch him drive all over theworld, because he flies, drives on two wheels and displays a sense of devil-may-care and showmanship wherever he races.

It is why he will be an unmissable attraction when he turns up to the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

Kelly also has his way with words, like many ofthe Irish do.

And he expects the three-day Adelaide Rally, which runs from December 7-9, to be genuine challenge after making himself familiar with some of the stages.

“I look forward to the Adelaide rally — a bit ofAussie tarmac,” Kelly said. “I’ve had a small taste of it and I’ll be doing some ‘recceing’ (reconnaissance) before the event.

“It turns out we’ve actually been on some of the stages.

“It looks very challenging and I’ve heard people talk about ‘the corkscrew’.

“Everyone I’ve seen seems to be a corkscrew soit’ll be very different, very challenging.

“But we’re looking forward to getting Baby Blue on the tarmac.”

Night the city stopped for a top-secret pursuitS C O T T W A L S H Possingham said. “You could see people on the

side of the roads reaching for their phones, trying to get a photo or some video, but not really sure what they were seeing.”

“It certainly got the attention of a few pedestrians and bike riders, that’s for sure.”

City filming started at 10.30pm on a week night, to ensure safety and minimal traffic disruption.

As many as 16 police motorbikes — unseenin the final cut — controlled the rolling roadblock as the high-powered cars moved through the city.

The shoot was so secretive that even the 40volunteers stationed along the route to help keep the roads clear knew only that they were involved in a motorsport event.

The video aimed to capture a global audience through social media and has ad more than two million views online and featured on The Inside Line , a TV show broadcast in 80 countries.

CALL it a close encounter of the turbo kind.In what was likened to a UFO sighting,

Adelaide’s city streets lit up in September with the sights and sounds of Formula 1 cars in a short film highlighting South Australia’s rich motorsport history.

The top-secret shoot was filmed in the darkness of night last month and involved Supercars legend John Bowe, current drivers Tim Slade, Cam Waters and Josh Kean, as well as three-time Superbikes world champion Troy Bayliss.

In the promotional video for this year’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival the five pilots are shown driving from the Henley Beach Rd underpass, along Currie and Waymouth streets, past landmarks including Victoria Square and finishing at Victoria Park.

“The way people were talking about it, it waslike a UFO sighting,” event spokesman Tim

“Getting to drive (this car) I will be able to fulfil what I was hoping to one day be — it’s really exciting to drive around the Adelaide track and driving in the parade and getting to be part of the festival.

“One thing that Adelaide does here well is agreat festival. Adelaide definitely comes alive and gets behind events like this.”

Slade will drive a Ford Cosworth V8-powered Footwork Arrows that was campaigned by Christian Fittipaldi during the 1994 Formula 1 championship.

The 32-year-old had his first taste of steeringthe car during filming of a promotional video — Race To The City — shot at night on Adelaide’s city streets in September.

Slade’s rise to Supercars included a successful junior go-karting career, before he finished second in the 2006 Australian Formula Ford Championship.

He said his experience in the single-seat, high-powered Formula 1 car was not as

much of a departure as some mightthink from the No. 14 V8

Commodore he now races in theSupercars championship.

“If you’re a race car driveryou can jump in any race carand no matter what it is you

quickly adapt or learn how todrive it,” he said. “Plus, it wasn’t like we were

racing around a track and setting atime in it — we were really just getting

from point A to point B. “But in a driving sense it certainly wasn’t

foreign to me. Compared with the later model F1s, which need a team of six people, computers and an hour of preparation and pre-warming just to get it started, this one is fairly basic.

“It’s similar to a Formula Ford — just biggerand with a lot more power and grip.”

Slade said he was looking forward to unleashing more of the car’s potential during the Adelaide Motorsport Festival’s Formula 1 demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday.

“I’ve driven a time attack car which has a hell of a lot of power and a lot of aerodynamic grip, and I’ve driven a sprint car which has a pretty crazy power-to-weight ratio,” he said.

“So I’d imagine around that little Victoria Park circuit the area where you can feel the characteristics of the car will be the acceleration.

“There is only one fast corner, the second-last near the Supercars pit area and where these types of cars are impressive is the high-speed stuff when the aero comes into play.

“I’m expecting that will be very impressive.”

S C O T T W A L S H

AS A youngster Tim Slade would stayup late, glued to the legendary scrapsinvolving Ayrton Senna, Alain Prostand Michael Schumacher fromFormula 1’s glory days of the 1990s.

“So it’s pretty cool that now when someoneasks ‘have you ever driven a Formula 1 car?’, I can say ‘yeah, I have,” the Adelaide Supercars pilot says.

“The great thing about driving this car is thatmy earliest memories of F1 are from the same era — that 1993 or 1994 time frame, with Senna and all those drivers.

“And these days, whether it’s this car or oneof the others, you can type it into the internet and go back and find on-board footage of them going around a racetrack back when they used to race.”

Formula 1 cars punching out their trademarksymphony of high-octane screams will again light up Victoria Park at this weekend’s 2017 Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

And behind the wheel of theinternational machines will be a collection of current-day Australian Supercars drivers, including Slade, six-time Bathurst 1000 champion Craig Lowndes and Ford star Cam Waters.

Another Adelaide driver and 2016 Adelaide 500 champion Nick Percat will also be involved, showcasing an exotic 2017 McLaren 570GT4, while touring cars legend John Bowe will wind back the clock in a 1974 Jagermeister March as well as reuniting with a Shell Sierra synonymous with the late 1980s.

Lowndes, the three-time Supercars driverschampion, will make his Adelaide Motorsport Festival debut, harnessing the most powerful Formula 1 car ever built, the 1986 Benetton that Gerhard Berger famously likened to a rocket.

“I’m looking forward to driving somethingvery unique that not many people get to drive,” Lowndes said.

“I was lucky enough to drive a McLaren through Bathurst (around Mt Panorama, in 2011) through a promotion with Vodafone, but that’s very different to what I’m doing with the Benetton.

“I grew up wanting to become a Formula 1 driver and I’m getting to drive what’s part of history.

“I remember coming to Adelaide and watching the Formula 1 race with my father as a kid, and watching these cars run around.

I grew up wanting to become a

Formula 1 driver and I’m getting to drive what’s part

of history

wheel drive in motorsport will be on show outside the spectacular Audi Solitaire display at Victoria Park on both days.

It will be the first public showing of Possingham’s impressive vehicle after spending the past two years building the car. Obtaining parts has been the major issue and he had to seek them from Latvia where the Audi is extremely popular.

“I bought the car from a museum in New

Zealand and it has been quite a struggle to get it built given all the parts had to come from Latvia,” Possingham said.

“I’ve just got it going and this will be the firsttime it has been seen in public. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Mercedes admirers will also be catered for with the three-pointed star marquee celebrating the 50th anniversary of its AMG performance brand.

To celebrate the occasion, 20 Mercedes AMG vehicles will be showcased as part of the Mercedes Tour in the Adelaide Rally and the standout attraction is set to be a 2017 AMG GTR.

The attractive biturbo V8 beast with the explosive punch has 0-100 times of 3.5 seconds.

Among the Mercedes entries for the rally isRay Eastwood’s 220SL, arguably the most attractive classic in the event.

Fans of the Audi brand will have fun atthis year’s Adelaide Motorsport Festivalwith Audi Solitaire to have a healthyinvolvement in the Adelaide Rally.

The automotive group will have atour contingent in the rally for the first time, having entered 20 cars for the challenge through the Adelaide Hills and on the roads in the world renowned wine regions of the Barossa and McLaren Vale.

R8, RS7, TTRS, SQ5 and RS6 models are among the Audi Solitaire entries as well as 10 RS3 cars. The RS3 is one of Audi Solitaire’s hottest selling products with its 400 horsepower, which makes its way to the ground through a seven speed dual clutch transmission.

The popular model sprints from 0-100 in 4.1seconds and is faster than an entry Porsche 911, giving it a reputation as a ballistic missile rather than a pocket rocket.

The howling five cylinder turbo soundtrackfrom the pack of RS3s will no doubt impress the Audi faithful, who will also enjoy watching the four classic five cylinder Turbo quattros at the Festival.

Queensland’s Stewart Reid heads the list inhis Audi S1 quattro, which has over 600 horsepower and is a purpose-built race car.

South Australian Tim Possingham has entered his Audi A2 Group B rally car for the special rally legends session at Victoria Park on December 10 and he will be joined by a 1983 UR quattro from Western Australia and A2 quattro from Victoria.

THEY’RE usually the star attractions butV8 Supercar drivers Craig Lowndes andNick Percat will have to take a backseatat this year’s extended Adelaide Motorsport Festival Gouger Street

Party.A record number of cars, estimated to be

worth over $16 million and with a combined 11,000 horsepower, will take centre stage at the popular event on December 8.

The 3rd annual festival street party, which will also feature tunes from Adelaide band Mr Buzzy, is set to be the “bigger and better than ever”, according to event spokesman Tim Possingham.

Up to 10,000 people are expected to flock tothe Gouger St precinct for the party, which has been extended from Morphett St down almost to Victoria Square.

While there will be plenty of entertainmentfor families and general punters, motoring enthusiasts will salivate over the collection of cars on display.

Apart from the 210 rally cars taking part in the weekend event, there will be 16 speciality cars, including six classic Formula Ones, a Ferrari FFX and a historic Brabham open-wheeler, which will receive a police escort from Victoria Park and arrive in Gouger St at about 5.50pm. And among the drivers will be V8 superstars Lowndes, Percat, Tim Slade and Cameron Waters, who will appear on stage and

sign autographs for fans from about 6pm.“It’s a great opportunity for people to get up

close to V8 Supercar drivers, amazing cars, there’s entertainment, food...and it’s a free community event,” Mr Possingham said.

Helping rev up the crowd throughout the night will be legendary Adelaide party band Mr Buzzy, featuring Bree Gregory on lead vocals, Jesse Catalano on keyboard and vocals, Terry Snow on guitar amd Tyson Muenchow on drums. The quartet have been rocking this town for 15 years but have never played the Motorsport Festival.

“We’re really looking forward to it, it’s a massive event and it’s going to be fantastic to be part of it,” Mr Catalano said. “It’s a fantastic initiative for car lovers, it’s a great build up for

the weekend and the rest of the year.”The four-piece have played all around

Adelaide at festivals including Sea and Vines and Schutzenfest, so they know how to get the party started.

“We’ll be playing songs with plenty of energy, lots of top 40 and classic hits, during a couple of sets between 6 and 9pm,” Mr Catalano said.

Mr Possingham said the street party has become an integral part of the calendar in Adelaide, with the four-hour event generating about $300,000 in economic benefit for the Gouger precinct.

“Everyone really embraces it and it’s becomereally valuable for Gouger St traders and the Motorsport Festival itself.,” he said. “It’s just a fun night out which caters for everyone.”

He won the Australian Sports Car category(1986) and back-to-back Touring Car races on the street circuit (1994-95) while rubbing shoulders with the world’s elite drivers.

“I still remember clearly watching the F1 cars, particularly the Williams with the Honda engines in them, with (Nigel) Mansell and (Keke) Rosberg going up Wakefield St.

“It was a lot of excitement for us people thathad never seen that sort of thing before. It was just amazing.”

Bowe retired from the V8 Supercar championship in 2007, but has won five of the past seven Touring Car Masters titles and was runner up to old rival Steven Johnson this year.

He hoped to share stories from his glitteringcareer with motor racing enthusiasts at the festival.

“I normally focus on what tomorrow brings, not what yesterday brought,” he said.

“But it’s really nice that people are interestedin the past and I’ve got much more time now to spend reminiscing than I used to.

“Not only do I enjoy the interaction with thepeople, but there’s so many good cars at the festival to look at. I’m a car perv, so I love it.”

JOHN Bowe won the final V8 race onAdelaide’s Formula One street circuit onhis way to the 1995 Australian Touring Car championship.

So when the Tasmanian hadthe chance to return to Victoria Park for the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, it was an opportunity he was unlikely to pass up.

“I’ve got some really great memories there,” Bowe, 63, said.

“Every year there’s been a raceon that track, I’ve raced there – that’s a lot of laps around Victoria Park.

“Adelaide is the most motorsport loving city there is in Australia and the festival is always a great event.

“I love it and Adelaidepeople are so enthusiastic about it.”

Bowe is one of a host ofmotorsport greats set to grace the festival from December 7-10.

He was excited about taking to the shortened parklands track in a 1974 Jagermeister March F1 car on the Sunday.

The four-decade racing veteran was also looking forward to some hot laps in the

Shell Ford Sierra RS500 he drove to hisfirst Bathurst 1000 victory alongsideDick Johnson in 1989.

“A lot of Dick Johnson’s cars stillexist, but that’s the only one that’sactually still participating in racing,”

Bowe said.“I actually drove it inthe parade at Bathurst(this year) and I’dforgotten how much

turbo lag they had.“The little track

they make for thefestival is goodfun. It’s not a race

meeting, but it’s justfun.”Devonport-born

Legend of the track is thrilled to be back

THE style of drifting and the outright speed of drag racing will be on show when the Adelaide Motorsport Festival unleashes two new on-track features at this year’s Victoria Park Sprint.

Adelaide’s international drift racer, Jake “Driftsquid” Jones, will perform smoking, screeching solo laps of the shortened Victoria Park at 4.35pm on Saturday, in his Nissan-powered BMW car.

Jones is a global hit through YouTube, and is in demand on the international drifting circuit. Last month he won a new gymkhana-drifting event in Indonesia, which involved sliding under circuit obstacles including a shipping container, an excavator and a forklift.

Then in a battle of outright speed, SA Supercars drivers Todd Hazelwood and Josh Kean will go head-to-head in a 300m drag up the main straight in two very different vehicles.

Hazelwood will pilot a modified Toyota86 powered by a Nissan GTR engine — dubbed the “WTF86” — in a Roll Race against Kean in a 1994 Arrows Formula 1 car.

The Saturday battle — effectively a dragrace from a rolling start — is scheduled to immediately follow Jones’ drifting display from 4.45pm.

When Adelaide Motorsport Festival opened in 2014, it attracted about 1800 people.

This year, director Tim Possingham expectsnearly 30,000 spectators.

“It is still early days for us but the event is extremely popular and interstate and international visitation has grown tremendously in the last two years,” Mr Possingham said.

“I have plans to expand the event further in2018 with the event most likely having three days of track activity in Victoria Park … possibly four.

“We will alternate the theming of the eventyear on year.

“Next year will have more of an internationalflavour again and more Adelaide-era F1 cars, year about we will mix it up with a huge range of crazy cars and celebrity drivers like we have this year.”

Patrons can also expect to see more cars involved next year as track density will increase in each category because the track will be lengthened.

“We also plan to run up to East Terrace andthen back down Wakefield Road with barriers in the middle.

“You can also expect to see more electric vehicle participation in 2018.”

Only early days but this is an event on the rise

It’s a Ferrari masterpieceFERRARI lovers will be in La La Land

when the famed marque celebratesits 70th anniversary with the appearance of one of its multi-million-dollar masterpieces at next

week’s Adelaide Motorsport Festival. One of the most exclusive street cars on

the planet, a LaFerrari hypercar will be among the star cars at the four-day carnival for car fanatics, based at Victoria Park.

This year’s festival coincides with Ferrari’s70th birthday and will reunite the Italian brand with the scene of its triumph in the Australian Formula One Grand Prix three decades earlier.

The Italian sports car manufacturer will return to the Adelaide Motorsport Festival to showcase the past and present models which have made it a worldwide leader.

It will also present a range of action-packed demonstrations on a section of the street circuit Austrian Gerhard Berger drove Ferrari to victory on in 1987.

Among the glittering list of machinery willbe one of just two Australian-based LaFerraris, the limited-production hybrid sports car first unveiled in 2013.

World-wide, there are just 500 LaFerraris, the most powerful street-legal Ferraris ever built with a top speed of 349km/h and capable of 0-100km/h in just

2.4s. Putting a price tag on any one LaFerrari is impossible, but last year one of the 500 was sold at auction to benefit an Italy earthquate relief fund for just over $10 million.

Ferrari Adelaide marketing manager Ella Trimbell said SA motorsport fans had a deep affection for the brand, stemming from its decade-long presence at Adelaide’s F1 Grand Prix.

“It’s very exciting to have a big Ferrari presence back on the track where the Ferrari Gerhard Berger F1 car won the Grand Prix,” Trimbell said.

“The 70th anniversary is a very special celebration for Ferrari as it marks the beginning of one of the world’s most loved brands.

“Ferrari is an internationally-renowned

brand and it has endured for solong because of the passion that(founder) Enzo Ferrari had for thebrand.

“That passion has spread amongFerrari fans and owners worldwide.”

Adelaide Motors, the authorisedsales and service centre for Ferrariin Adelaide since 2013, has beenassociated with the festival since

its inception four years ago.The 488 Challenge will headline a

glittering collection of Ferrari machinery on display.

Unveiled at last year’s Ferrari World Finalsevent at Daytona, US, the car is the latest model

in the brand’s international racing serieswhich was launched in 1992.

The turbocharged vehicle is the most

powerful Challenge car made and is powered by a 670cv 3.9-litre V8 engine.

Other late model Ferraris on show includethe F40 GTE, 599 XX, F12tdf, 458 Speciale and the V12 four-seater GTC4Lusso grand tourer.

Classic cars from the manufacturer’s richhistory will also feature such as the 308 GTSi and Testarossa.

Ferrari machines will take to the track fordemonstrations on both days of the festival.

The Spettacolo will lay down some laps on the shortened Adelaide 500 circuit on the Sunday, before the FXX will be unleashed with V8 Supercars great Craig Lowndes behind the wheel.

Just 30 FXXs were built and sold exclusively to European-based Ferrari owners, who are only permitted to drive the car on track days approved by the brand.

The vehicle, which will also feature in theGouger Street Party on the Friday night, weighs 1165kg and has a top speed of 345km/h.

“Motorsport fans love seeing the Ferraridisplays and demonstrations because we have brought some very unique cars to Adelaide, some of the cars that you cannot see anywhere else,” Trimbell said.

“Ferrari values being a part of the festivalbecause we can share the passion for Ferrari with our staff, our client base and of course the public.”
