5 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
Dear Members, Volunteers, Staff and Supporters of CAPS
It is with great pleasure I present the CAPS 2012 Annual Report to you. This report covers the
many services provided by CAPS and gives an indication of the various communities we reach.
During 2012 we have sought to ensure that the mix of services provided remains relevant and
effective. This report covers the full range of CAPS services and I trust is of interest to you.
I also take this opportunity to thank our many supporters.
Volunteers who provide the telephone service, attend community events where CAPS is building
its awareness such as the popular Auburn Festival of Families, or volunteer in some other way,
are the lifeblood of our organisation. The impact of your efforts, though not always obvious, are
so important in CAPS achieving its objectives. A big thank you to all CAPS volunteers.
CAPS Staff have maintained their enthusiasm and dedication throughout 2012 to deliver a wide
range of programs and events. The broad skills they bring to their roles ensures CAPS has a
strong base from which to deliver great services in the future. Their tireless efforts remain an
inspiration to the Board and we recognise and thank them.
To those who provide financial support, we remain ever grateful for your generosity which
allows CAPS to maintain its programs and seek to find new avenues of providing service. One
such addition in the last year has been CAPS' involvement in Family Fundamentals sessions. These
sessions bring together multiple agencies, in providing a comprehensive view of support,
responsibilities and avenues for assistance to community groups we have not previously reached.
This addition to CAPS' range of service was the direct result of grants received and demonstrates
the tangible outcomes which have been achieved through this generous support.
During the year the CAPS Board also had a few changes. In March 2012 we farewelled Renee
Carter, the former Chair, who had done so much to stabilise and strengthen the Board during a
difficult part of CAPS' history. Reluctantly we also farewelled Dr Anne Adams and Helen
McPaul whose involvement in CAPS stretched back many years in a variety of roles over that
time. Our organisation is indebted to their service. These changes also brought an influx of new
Board members, with a breadth of skills and many ideas. It has been an honour for me to be
elected Chair of this most hard working and committed Board and I thank each Board member,
past and present, for their time and support during 2012.
6 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
In October 2012, the Board gathered to review the CAPS' strategy and an overview slide of the
strategic direction of CAPS is shown in this report. Types of CAPS services will remain largely
the same but there will be a focus on building additional reach for our services, be they
communities or locations in which CAPS has not previously worked. We also took the
opportunity to clarify CAPS' objectives, so that we are all clear that:
The Child Abuse Prevention Service (CAPS) is a national organisation which works with communities, families
and children towards the prevention of child abuse.
As we approach CAPS' 40th anniversary in 2013 I remain confident that we will continue to grow
and build on the legacy of our founder Dorothy Ginn.
Andrew Grech
Chair
7 2012 ANNUAL REPORT
For 39 years CAPS has delivered valuable and immediate support, referrals and a wealth of
information to those affected by child abuse, via its telephone support line. During the year this
national service reached over 4000 callers, assisting struggling parents and carers, families in
crisis, victims of abuse, concerned members of the community and professionals working with
children. It remains as one of the few free telephone help lines, and is still the only national
telephone service in Australia that is wholly dedicated to child abuse prevention. The board
members, staff and volunteers of the organisation look forward to celebrating 40 years of
operation for this vital service area, in 2013!
Parent and Carer Education Seminars (PACES)
CAPS’ highly popular PACES program continued throughout 2011/2012. This program was
designed with a community development focus, offering an opportunity for local parents and
carers to improve their parenting knowledge, skills and confidence. The free monthly seminars
cover a broad range of topics (for example; resilience and protective behaviours) and are
structured and interactive in their approach.
The seminars have reached 163 parents and have received a great deal of positive feedback with
many parents choosing to return for additional seminars.
Support Groups
This year CAPS has extended its prevention work through the delivery of tailored support group
programs. Utilising the established ‘Keeping Children Safe’ model, CAPS has worked with
vulnerable parents, supporting them in their development of vital protective factors, and in their
understanding of the conditions and practices necessary to create a safe environment for their
children. This primary prevention initiative delivers psycho-educational, prevention-focussed
support in a structured 6 week program. The groups connect parents and carers, provide skill
development opportunities and build parental confidence and capacity.
Breakfast Club
In 2012 CAPS has continued its partnership with Homebush West Public School in the delivery
of a breakfast club program, providing a healthy start to the day for students at the school. The
program also offers a supportive and focussed social experience for the children, allowing them
to interact with each other, CAPS volunteers and the school chaplain, practice valuable social
skills, and develop new friendships.

Parent Library and Resource Centre
CAPS Parent Library and Resource Centre continues to add value to the client experience,
extend CAPS’ reach into the community, and increase its ability to support local families. The
Parent Library and Resource Centre is a welcoming, quiet space that parents and carers can visit
to freely access high-quality parenting resources, form connections with each other, participate in
free parent education workshops, locate information about local services and access the support
of CAPS’ highly-trained, on-site support worker.
Parent Programs
CAPS’ parent programs have greatly expanded in 2012, with the delivery of a range of free,
structured evidence based groups including Triple P, Tuning Into Kids, Tuning In To Teens and
123 Magic. Providing both evening and day programs, and offering child care to improve
participation, CAPS has worked with hundreds of parents through this service area. Further,
these parenting groups have allowed CAPS to partner with a broad range of agencies and
organisations (such as Mission Australia, Auburn Diversity Services, Metro Migrant Resource
Centre, Barnardos, Brighter Futures, Macarthur Diversity Services, and Homebush West Public
School) to run programs around Sydney.
Throughout the year CAPS has also delivered 12 resilience seminars to 213 parents at preschools
around Sydney, through its ongoing partnership with Early Childhood Professionals.
Community Development 2012 has afforded many opportunities for CAPS in the context of community development. In
February, CAPS funded and let the coordination the organisation of the Auburn Festival of
Families and Community, bringing together more than 20 community agencies and attracting the
attendance of thousands of local families. CAPS went on to participate in 8 additional
community events around Sydney including Picnic in the Park, held in the Canterbury area,
Children’s Week in Burwood Park and the Inner West Families Week Expo.
CAPS further brought together a range of agencies including Auburn Diversity Services,
SydWest and Macarthur Legal Centre to deliver 6 ‘Family Fundamentals’ workshops in the
Blacktown and Auburn regions. These workshops provided key family law, child protection and
healthy relationships information, and were tailored for Amharic and Arabic speaking families.
CAPS staff delivered over one dozen Playpower workshops around Sydney, engaging more than
400 participants across the series, and throughout the year delivered regular protective
behaviours workshops to preschool and primary school aged students throughout Greater
Sydney.

Communications Outreach
This year CAPS launched a major national advertising campaign, reaching out to those affected by child abuse and offering support via CAPS’ National telephone support line. The prevention campaign highlights that the effects of child abuse can be carried around for a lifetime and has been showcased in a TV commercial developed and directed by award-winning creative Erin Johnson (of Melbourne agency Room3). The 8 week campaign has included over 100 national television broadcasts on both free to air and pay television networks, and more than 700 radio syndications around the country.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of CAPS, generously offering their time, skills and expertise to
contribute to the organisation and deliver a vital service to those in need. Volunteers contribute
in many ways: manning the CAPS telephone service, running the Breakfast club program,
assisting with child care during group activities, documenting statistical information, serving on
the board, organizing and maintaining office resources, delivering promotional activities within
the community, attending events and ceremonies, assisting with administrative tasks and many
other activities.
CAPS’ continues to benefit from the involvement of a dedicated group of volunteers who have
been with the organization for many years, supplemented by newer team members who have
brought with them a wide variety of skills, much enthusiasm, and ongoing commitment to
helping children and their families. This year our volunteer team has grown to include a number
of recent arrivals, whom we warmly welcome. To all volunteers, Thank you! Your tireless
dedication to the cause and to CAPS, your enthusiasm, your contribution and your place in the
CAPS team are priceless.
