Each year the Department of Education (DoE) schedules five Staff Development Days (SDD) and sets the expectation that, each term, teachers also participate in regular professional development sessions. This is based on the understanding that student success depends on quality teaching, and that quality teaching requires ongoing improvement through the systematic learning and professional development of teachers.

According to the Australian Charter for the Professional Learning of Teachers and School Leaders professional learning is about improving individual professional practice, and a school’s collective effectiveness, as measured by 1) improved student learning, 2) student engagement with learning, and 3) student wellbeing.

Professional development takes place within a culture where teachers and school leaders expect and are expected to be active learners, to reflect on, receive feedback on and improve their pedagogical practice, and by doing so to improve student outcomes. It should develop teachers and school as researchers and promote innovation and excellence.

The publication Using student assessment for

professional learning puts forward that teachers must identify their own professional learning needs based on an analysis of those for their students. Typically these become a school-wide agenda as teachers work collaboratively and commonalities between student cohorts are identified.

At Ashfield Public School, one aspect of professional learning currently focused on is measurable growth. Together as a team of teachers we are developing our professional knowledge and practice to meet the identified needs of students of all abilities within the context of a differentiated curriculum to show student progress. This includes using Visible Learning to measure the growth of student ability to analyse and evaluate texts and apply their knowledge to new situations.

A strong professional learning culture is at the heart of successful school. Student learning and achievement increase when teachers engage in effective professional development that give them the skills to know students and how they learn; and know the content and how to teach it. It is teachers working together to understand what students are not learning and to find instructional gaps, then determine what they need to learn to help close those gaps.

Purposeful professional learning for teachers and school leaders is one of the most effective strategies for improving student outcomes in our schools. It is a continual improvement process to challenge existing knowledge and understandings, sustain and develop good practice, and introduce new and improved strategies to engage students.

This term is absolutely flying by! We have been so busy learning and growing every single day. In week 4 we had the privilege of seeing one of our favourite authors, Frances Watts read her stories. We met children in our local area and talked about how books and illustrations are made. The students were very inspired to write after the experience.

We have been attending Fit Futures every week and enjoy learning new skills. We can notice the difference it is making to our bodies every week as we become fitter and stronger. Our balance and hand eye coordination has greatly improved.

Our news presentations keep getting better and better. Kindergartens has taken ownership of our learning intentions and are showing visible improvement. After every presentation the students receive some feedback from their teachers and peers. They are given two points of strength which we call stars and a wish, which is there where to next. The children should be very proud of the way they take this feedback on and make improvements every week.

What an exciting term filled with lots of learning and fun. The excursion to the Field of Mars provided students with real life experiences and supported our Science unit of work ‘Watch it Grow’.

The students enjoyed touching a phasmid and making their own. The bush walk was so interesting and students were able to build a nest and observe a Squiggly Gum Caterpillar.

This term the students have also been enjoying fitness with Future Fit. There skills are developing and all students are preparing for the schools athletics carnival.

Research projects are being presented in class in preparation for the Public Speaking Competition. We have so many confident speakers in Stage One. It has been wonderful to see all the different types of presentations and to have little expert students teaching their peers about insects.

Last of all it has been so exciting to observe the life cycle of a chicken in real life. We’ve seen the process of eggs hatching into baby chicks which grew big feathers and were flapping around! We have had 10 wonderful chicks which we observed daily until they left last Friday to go back to the farm.

Pop into Popism!Stage 2 has been creating some incredible Pop Art this term. For those of you who don’t know what Pop Art is, Pop Art is art that uses images and icons that are popular in the modern world. This includes famous celebrities like movie stars and rock stars, commercial items like soup cans and soft drinks, comic books, and any other items that are popular in the commercial world. There are a number of ways that artists use these items to create art such as repeating the item over and over again, changing the colour or texture of the item, and putting different items together to make a picture. We have created our own Pop Art of objects such as Fidget Spinners, nail polish and even our most favourite treats such as muffins and Doritos! They really POP!

We have enjoyed Pop Art and it is extremely fun. We have loved studying artists like Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns. Pop in and check out our fabulous artworks on display in Stage 2!

PSSA Sport Soccer and netball are part of an exciting competition run by the Western Suburbs Primary Schools’ Sports Association (WSPSSA). Each week we participate in playing netball or soccer and compete against other primary schools in our local area. Some students have participated in the Rugby League in a safe, non-competitive and fun environment at school. The sports program has taught us some great fundamental movement skills, teamwork as well as awesome sportsmanship qualities. We are looking forward to our upcoming Gala Days!

Stage 3Stage PageWe have been involved with many fun activities this term, including sports, public speaking and debating. Maths Olympiad students completed their first test and the first ICAS test on Digital Technologies was held.

In Week 4, our debating teams participated in round one of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. The Ashfield Reds and Ashfield Blues debated against the Balmain Tigers and Balmain Wombats on topics related to education. The Balmain Wombats won the debate on ‘School students should have a 3 day weekend’ against the Ashfield Reds. The Ashfield Blues won the debate on ‘Homework should be banned’ against the Balmain Tigers. All students who participated prepared very thoughtful arguments and made a great case for their team. The next round will take place at Haberfield in week 7 and the topics will be related to media.

Week 4 also saw first round of the Inner-West Debating Competition. Accompanied by Ms Perrin, Ashfield debated Leichhardt on the topic ’Debating Should be Compulsory for Primary School Students’. Despite the loss for Ashfield, it was a close debate and students on the team demonstrated their ability to rebut the arguments of the opposition. We look forward to seeing how they perform in round two!

In preparation for the whole school public speaking final in Week 7, Stage 3 students have been presenting their multicultural perspective speeches to their classes. Year 5 and 6 are also expected to deliver an impromptu speech, which involves speaking on a given topic for 2 minutes, with very little preparation time.

PSSA Soccer and Netball is well underway. The response to soccer training at Ashfield Park has been outstanding and we have decided to extend it to two mornings. Girls train on Tuesday mornings and boys train on Thursday mornings. Well done everyone!

Our stage three netball coaches have been so proud of the improvement by all students. They are showing commitment and a growth mindset when they arrive at Wednesday morning training and on game day. It has been pleasing to see netball on the playground as our teams share their knowledge with their peers

who are completing the rugby league program or soccer. Fantastic inclusion Stage 3!

Many students participated in Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 19th May. It was wonderful to see Stage 3 students holding hands with some younger students and helping them to cross safely. Road safety is very important for our students, especially with so many Stage 3 students walking to and from school each day. Remember to STOP and choose wisely where you cross, LOOK and LISTEN for traffic, and hold hands if you’re with an adult. Don’t just follow the crowd, THINK for yourself when crossing.

Making a Difference to Student WellbeingText adapted from Making a difference to student wellbeing Teacher Magazine, 15 May 2017.

Schools are not just places where students acquire academic skills, they also help students become more resilient in the face of adversity, feel more connected with the people around them, and aim higher in their aspirations for their future.

Not least, schools are the first place where children experience society in all its facets and their experiences can have a profound influence on their attitudes and behaviour in life.

Some factors that make a difference to student wellbeing and much comes down to teachers, parents and schools.

Positive relationships with teachers

Happier students tend to report positive relations with their teachers and students in ‘happy’ schools.

Belonging and behaviour management

Effective classroom management consists of far more than establishing and imposing rules, rewards and incentives to control behaviour, it involves practices and instructional techniques to create a learning environment that facilitates and supports active engagement in learning, encourages co-operation and promotes behaviour that benefits other people.

Fact of the WeekDid you know!

That when a female spider makes its sac, it can lay up to 1000 eggs, and when all of the eggs hatch, some

of the little spiders will run away, while others will cast a line of silk and fly away! A spider’s sac will look like a ball of cotton wool, or fairy floss, with little white spots. But beware of what lies inside!

contribute to others in our community.

If you don’t struggle you don’t improve.”By Billy-Sean & Diego

Parental involvement

Students’ perceptions of how interested their parents are in them and in their school life is also related to their own attitudes towards education and their motivation to study.

Schools and parents in partnership

Schools should create an environment of co-operation with parents and communities. If parents and teachers establish relationships based on trust, schools can rely on parents as valuable partners in the cognitive and socio-emotional education of their students.

Bullying

Bullying is a threat to student wellbeing and it can have serious consequences for the victim, the bully and the bystanders.

Bullying can be inflicted directly, through physical (hitting, punching or kicking) and verbal (name-calling or mocking) abuse. And then there is relational bullying, where some children are ignored, excluded from games or parties, rejected by peers, or are the victims of gossip and other forms of public humiliation and shaming.

Schools must foster an environment of safety, tolerance and respect for children.

Schools must work for effective anti-bullying programmes, follow a whole-of-school approach that includes training for teachers on bullying behaviour and how to handle it, and develop strategies to provide information to and engage with parents. Teachers need to communicate to students that they will not tolerate any form of bullying; and parents need to be involved in school planning and responses to bullying.

end to complete the game.

Bounce up and fly through the matching hues! In Color Switch, you must have quick reflexes to score. Touch the change orb, and look at your new shade. Then, wait until the perfect time to glide through the next spinning circle!

We rate this game 3/5 game points.

In recent weeks the focus on pitch has included ear training of intervals (the space between two notes) and an introduction and review of clefs for all students. We listened to major intervals for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1, and major and minor intervals for Stages 2 and 3. Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 have also had an introduction to treble clef. Stages 2 and 3 have reviewed treble clef and have had an introduction or review of bass clef as well. Some Stage 3 classes have had the opportunity to write their own ostinato compositions.

We are steadily moving forward in our extracurricular music groups in preparation for BandFest 2017, the Festival of Instrumental Music, Cantabile Festival, Celebration Sing Out and Education Week. Permission notes for BandFest 2017 need to be returned as soon as possible. Thanks for your assistance.

At the workshop the students were divided into groups and got a dance teacher for each group. Brant and Jamie’s dance teacher was called Sonny. They learnt two dance routines; one was called the Emu dance. Then they switched group teachers and did a sad dance with Jason.

The next day they performed to all the other groups. They first performed the emu dance and the audience was astonished. They performed the sad dance and the audience was amazed at how much had been learnt. Brant and Jamie enjoyed the experience and thanked Ms Manning for taking them.

Sport of the WeekTaekwondo

This martial art is greatly recommended for kids at any age, it is a martial art about fast kicks and all kind of kicks. This is Korean and is really intense; this helps kids because they need to be active and they need to know how

to defend themselves in any situation. This martial art is in the Olympics and the gold medallist in 2000 Sydney Olympics is for the men Kim Kyong-hun and the women is Laura Burns.

Paper CraftThis weeks origami design is the butterfly. This 3D butterfly made from paper can move its wings in a butterfly like way. Some butterfly designs can be like puppets and you can put your fingers inside and move them to make the butterfly wings flap. Some cultures believe this origami is a symbol of love and luck.

I left my chocolate Freddo on my desk and now it is gone. I was looking forward to eating it at Break Time.

RegardsSad student

This is a dilemma as we do not know what happened to the Freddo. Maybe a small animal came into your classroom and took it away? I would not like to think that it was stolen as stealing is not being respectful to others.

Perhaps it is a case of mistaken ownership and a classmate also had a Freddo and innocently ate your tasty treat.

I also wonder why you have chocolate at school? An apple or a banana is a much healthier option. On the bright side, because you didn’t get to eat your Freddo your dentist will be very happy with you.

My advice is to be resilient and look for something positive that happened in your day instead. This will help you to be happy.

Sincerely Danna

Hi everybody! Here’s this week’s Joke.

Doctor: I have good news and bad news.

Patient: What’s the bad news?

Doctor: You have a new and horrible unnamed disease.

Patient: And the good news is?

Doctor: I get to name it after myself and become horribly rich and famous.

This SRC ReportWe have noticed that there has been less rubbish on the playground than last week. We would like to make sure that everyone is putting their rubbish in the bin and not to forget that there are recyclable and organic waste bins around the school. Well done for keeping the school tidy.

Last week when we looked at the suggestion box we noticed that the suggestions weren’t very suitable for the school. We would like to make sure that everyone puts appropriate suggestions in the suggestion box.

On Wednesday the 30th of August week seven, we will be hosting a pyjama day to raise money for LACLA and we would like everyone to bring in a gold coin donation.

Mother’s Day Stall Report

Thanks to everyone who donated gifts and their time to make to the Mother’s Day Stall on Friday 12th May such a great success. The students enjoyed the independence of choosing something special for their mum, and we raised just over $1,500 for the school. We hope there were lots of happy mums opening their presents on Sunday 14th!

Seeking volunteers for the Grants Committee

The P&C Grants committee is looking for volunteers to help put together applications for grants for the school. LACLA

Ever wonder what those gold-coin donations or class collection cans are for?

Let the African Children Learn Association (LACLA) started with the collection of 5 cent coins which could buy basic stationery. LACLA is now supporting 100 children by meeting all their school needs. LACLA is working with Mansa, in

Northern Zambia and, like the rest of the country, the local communities face increasing challenges for their children. Many children are single or double orphans due to extreme poverty and HIV / AIDs. LACLA is working in partnership with 7 community

based groups which include a youth group in 5 villages to enhance participatory sustainable development through capacity building. For more information go to www.laclaaust.org

At our Term 2 meeting on Monday 22nd May, the P&C were fortunate to have Dorothy Makasa from LACLA share the stories of some of the children LACLA is supporting – watch this space in future newsletters for more on LACLA’s work.

I created this artwork to inspire others to work hard to achieve their goals and to never stop dreaming. I drew a dream catcher because it is a symbolic representation of a dream. My main inspiration was a quote which was, “Dreams & dedication are a good combination” or in other words, “Dream Big”.

Yesterday I attended a very important Learning Support Teacher (L.A.S.T) meeting at head office and again, this is evidence about how proud I feel to be a teacher at this school.

Well done Ashfield P.S.! This includes parents and caregivers, the Ashfield Community and all students. A big pat on the back for everyone.
