Ram :: 1500Ram’s full-size entry

into the pickup marketis as versatile as evernow.

Outfitted in countlesseditions with dozensof powertrain and sizeconfigurations, the Ram1500 is a workhorsewhen it needs to beand refined whenasked.

Three engine optionsare available for theRam 1500 this year, a3.7-liter V6, 5.7-li-ter V8 and 4.7-literV8. Two- and four-wheel-drive options are available throughout the range. Perhaps the Ram 1500’sbiggest strength is its adaptability to different circumstances based on usage. This year Ram broughtout countless editions of the truck to appeal to different buyers based on lifestyle. Popular editionsincluded the Outdoorsman, built to maximize storage and tough terrain, along with a work-readyTradesman edition geared toward fleet buyers and cost-conscious buyers.

Of course, capability is everything when it comes to pickups and the Ram holds ground when itcomes to that as well. The Tradesman HD boasts an 11,500 lbs. trailer rating along with an over3,000 lbs. payload capacity. The 5.7-liter V8 has been updated as well, offering 390 horsepower,over 400 ft.-lbs. of torque and a 20-mpg EPA rating.

This year may see incremental upgrades to the Ram lineup and Ram has announced that it will betesting plug-in models this year to perhaps skew the Ram toward alternative fuel options for the future.

Jeep ::Grand CherokeeNow two years after the

Grand Cherokee’s overhaul,and the full-size SUV doesn’tseem to be losing any steam.

The flagship SUV for Jeepis still going strong, and afterlast year’s debut of the GrandCherokee SRT8, it’s still goingfast too.

This year’s changes to theGrand Cherokee are largelycosmetic and minor, with a fewnew trim levels to talk about.

Under the hood is still an op-tion between a 3.6-liter Penta-star V6 engine or a 5.7-liter V8in pricier models. Both modelscome paired to a six-speedautomatic transmission thatcapably puts power to the roadand maximizes fuel economy inthe V6 up to 23 mpg on the highway. The SRT8 model comes with a 6.2-liter behemoth that powers theSUV from 0-60 mph in around 5 seconds.

The Overland Summit has been a big seller for Jeep since it’s introduction, as many Grand Cherokeebuyers are looking for more “grand” in the model. Heated and ventilated leather seats, satellite naviga-tion and wood accents underscore the model’s opulence.

Not much is likely to change in the Grand Cherokee this year as Jeep rides its current success into thisyear and beyond. Something tells us though that the Grand Cherokee may see an 8-speed automaticsometime soon though.

Jeep ::WranglerHead designer for

Jeep Mark Davis sayshis job is easy when itcomes to the Wran-gler: “Don’t screw itup.”

That’s largelybecause the staple ofJeep’s roster, the ultra-utilitarian Wranger,hasn’t changed muchon the outside sincethe Eisenhower admin-istration.

But just like gradeschool, it’s worth learn-ing that it’s what’s onthe inside that matters.

This year’s Wrangler is the beneficiary of Chrysler’s do-it-all engine, the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, that’snow in everything from minivans to sedans.

The result of packing the V6 between the rugged fenders is an immediate boost in horsepower — 253from 202 — and in fuel economy — up to 21 mpg from 19 mpg.

It’s a dramatic improvement for the Wrangler, and has helped propel Jeep’s sales in the last two yearsfrom abysmal to stratospheric in the automaker’s turnaround from bankruptcy.

The Wrangler is also treading into luxury territory with interior options like available heated leatherseats and Uconnect systems like Bluetooth streaming audio.

Those may be far removed from the Wrangler’s days as a brass tacks, go-anywhere beast, but it’salso completely allowable considering the Wrangler is still a go-anywhere beast.

We’ll be waiting in Moab to see what Jeep has in store for Easter Jeep Safari.

Chrysler :: 300The iconic Chrysler full-size sedan is

back, but the attitude it was famous forhas been slightly toned back.

Redesigned in 2011, the four-doorsedan that was popular with youngerpeople for it’s aggressive profile and highbeltline has been toned down but the carstill packs plenty of style. The new modelfeatures subtler styling and occupies amore luxury-style profile that’ll appeal tomature buyers.

Not withstanding however was thepowertrain improvements that the 300underwent with its redesign. Chrysler de-ployed its near-universal 3.6-liter PentastarV6 engine that cranks out 253 horsepower on the entry-level 300 along with a more robust 5.7-literHemi for people looking for more power under the hood.

Inside, Chrysler threw a larger touchscreen for nearly all of the car’s controls as well as a single-paneldash that sweeps from driver to passenger in one swoop. The effect is elegant as well as pleasing to theeye. The 300 is also available in SRT8 spec for people asking the most from the engine, and the 392cubic-inch engine propels the 300 from 0-60 in just under 6 seconds.

There’s plenty to like about the new model, even if the styling is more sedate, as the updated interiorand exterior offers a much more luxurious feel for the Chrysler hauler. Seating for five in the 300 is spa-cious and the soft-touch materials are comparable to sedans that can cost up to twice as much.

A mid-year update planted Chrysler’s 8-speed automatic transmission to maximize fuel economy, andreports say the sedan can reach up to 30 mpg in highway cruising.

Some may lament the fact that the “gangster is gone” with the 2012 Chrysler 300 and 2013 Chrysler300, but there’s no doubt that Chrysler is looking toward the future with their critically acclaimed sedan.

Ram :: 1500Ram’s full-size entry

into the pickup marketis as versatile as evernow.

Jeep ::WranglerHead designer for

Acura ::MDXAcura’s sturdy and steady

SUV may be ending itssecond generation soon,which means good things forbuyers in 2012.

The rock-solid SUV hasbeen a big seller for Acurain the mountain states thanksto its spacious and accom-modating interior, turbo V6and comparatively low price.

The MDX’s biggest sellingpoint thus far has been itsthree-row capacity that putsit alongside the BMW X5 asthe only mid-sized luxury SUVwith capacity for 7 without being a school bus.

The 3.7-liter turbocharged engine remains the bedrock for the MDX with power twisting through allfour wheels thanks to Acura’s Super Handling All Wheel Drive system. The engine produces a weighty300 horsepower and 270 ft.-lbs. of torque, plenty to blast through powder.

Inside the MDX prides itself on having a supple interior that makes the SUV attractive. Premium au-dio is available as an option, as are navigation and a climate control system that activates, partially,on the position of the sun.

Savvy buyers know that the best time to get a good deal on a car is toward the end of a life cycle,typically when engineers have maxed out a car’s potential. That time may prove to be now becausethe MDX should be in line for an overhaul in 2013, although nothing official has been announced.

If the third generation is anything like the second, it’ll mean that Acura has a solid SUV for Utah onits hands again.

Acura :: TLIt has been out for nearly

nine months now but the2012 Acura TL has stillbeen a strong seller for theluxury brand.

The four-door sedan re-ceived a minor facelift from2011 but still retained it’sdynamic driving charac-teristic. The design changewas a bit of a departurefrom the typical Acurarange, but so far critics andfans alike seem to approveof the new design scheme.

Two mildly different pow-ertrain options are avail-able on the TL, a 3.5-literV6 and a 3.7-liter V6. Thelatter powers the all-wheel drive version of the sedan.

Inside, there are plenty of interior accessories to live up to the Acura badge up front. Base price forthe TL begins at $35,605 and comes standard with an 8-speaker stereo system, Bluetooth connection,power heated seats, moonroof and leather wrapped steering wheel. Navigation and rearview cameraare available as options as are ventilated front seats.

Fans of the TL will know that the sedan powers well past the traditional “sedan” moniker and intosports sedan territory with 0-60 times around 6 seconds. That’s brisk for any car, but especially briskconsidering the car weighs nearly 4,000 lbs.

Acura folks have been tight-lipped about their plans for 2013, but a rumored coupe version couldbe coming. And if it’s anything like the sedan, it may just be a showstopper for the Acura brand.

Audi ::A6Car and Driver’s Steve Siler

famously said that while no caris perfect, the new 2012 AudiA6 is a car nearing perfection.And so far, every critic andcustomer to sit behind the wheelhas agreed.

The redesigned A6 features a3.0-liter supercharged V6 thatchurns out more than 300 horse-power and has been the volumeseller in the U.S. The engine hasbeen praised for it’s brisk ac-celeration (the car rockets up to60 mph from 0 in just over 5 sec-onds) and it’s supreme responsethroughout the power band. When paired with Audi’s legendary Quattro all-wheel-drive system, theAudi is capable and confident on the road.

Similarly, the interior has been updated and refined and represents a monumental step forward forthe German luxury carmaker. The wraparound styling offers a spacious and bright greenhouse fordriver and passengers and the redesigned seats offer plenty of bolstering and support during spiriteddrives.

Audi also focused efforts on new technology in the sedan, underscored by the latest generationAudi MMI information controls. As with all Audis, the car can be equipped with myriad entertainmentand safety systems for well-heeled buyers looking for the most from their sedan.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged model is available and produces more than 210 horsepower while deliver-ing nearly 30 mpg on the highway.

This year should see incremental upgrades to the A6, and Audi may be preparing a Porsche-fight-ing RS6 model to deliver ultimate performance for luxury buyers. Stay tuned.

Audi ::Q7Audi’s biggest SUV has

also been a big seller herein Utah.

The three-row, seven-passenger Q7 was a lateentrant into the crowdedluxury SUV market whenit debuted in the U.S. onlya few years ago. Nowthe upscale SUV is amongthe segment leaders witha opulent interior and twosolid powertrain options.

The Q7 is available ineither a supercharged V6model or a more fuel-effi-cient 3.0-liter diesel model.Both options provideample power for the largeSUV to haul, carry or tow just about anything on the planet. Inside the Audi Q7 is plenty big enoughto carry most Utah families in style. Audi’s MMI system has been refined over the years and offers oneof the more intuitive systems for entertainment and convenience.

Both diesel and supercharged models deliver nearly 300 horsepower and between 300 and 400ft.-lbs. of torque (more in the diesel model) as well as all-wheel-drive via Quattro systems.

Last year Audi introduced a more performance-oriented S line model for the Q7 that could outputmore than 330 horsepower and this year Audi is rumored to introduce more weight-saving advance-ments to make the Q7 more efficient and quicker.

Hyundai ::VelosterAmerica, meet perhaps

the most unique car on themarket.

The Hyundai Veloster isa bit of a headscratcher toclassify.

The car is very much ahatchback coupe, howeverit has three passengerdoors — one on thedriver’s side and two onthe passenger side — andcan seat four.

The Veloster is thebrainchild of Hyundaiengineers who wanted tocreate a unique car for theAmerican and Europeanmarkets, and they did justthat.

Early indications from critics and carbuyers is that the Veloster is incredible value for money, andwhile nothing is perfect, the Veloster is much closer than Hyundais of the past have been.

Powered by 1.6-liter four cylinder engine, the car is brisk but not too quick and can get up to 40mpg on the highway — big for buyers in its range.

The Veloster also comes with parent-friendly hardware called BlueLink that can identify to parentswhen a certain speed has been exceeded, where the car is and even how loud the stereo is.

The Veloster should be getting more improvements this year, but it’s unclear if Hyundai will attemptan R-spec speedster this year or next.

Hyundai :: ElantraThe number to remem-

ber here is 40.That’s the mileage

estimate that Hyundai canhit with its new Elantra, acar built to fight rising gasprices.

The whole Hyundairange turned heads lastyear with the introductionof surprisingly good carslike the Sonata, Elantraand Equus, and it’s noshock: the cars offer in-credible value for money.

Starting at around$15,000 the Elantra is abudget car with plenty ofaccessories to boot.

Hyundai can offer all of that because of their famous in-house steel manufacturer and South Koreanfacilities. Combating the stereotype of old Korean cars before it, the quality and craftsmanship thathave gone into cars like the Elantra is winning over buyers from other import brands.

It remains to be seen how much flexibility Hyundai has with the Elantra and whether the automakerwill turbocharge or hybridize the 1.8-liter four cylinder engine it has in the Elantra.

Inside the car is roomy and spacious, and even though ti competes head-to-head with other smallcars like the Honda Civic and Toyota Carolla, the Elantra is actually classified as a mid-size car.

The Elantra comes standard with a six-speed manual or can be equipped with a fuel-saving auto-matic transmission.

Expect to see an Elantra hatchback later this year as a new edition for the Hyundai range.

Hyundai :: SonataEasily one of the most

talked about cars last yearwas the surprising HyundaiSonata, which went on salein late 2010.

Completely redesigned,the Sonata has been gainingfans everywhere for it’s new,bolder styling and attractiveengine choices — and thoseare just the stingy critics.

While the standard modeloffers a 2.4-liter four-cylinderengine, Hyundai is also offer-ing the Sonata in a 2.0-literturbocharged model anda 2.4-liter hybrid model aswell.

But equally as impressive as the engine options, the Sonata’s interior too has been winning praisefor its comfort, fit and finish.

On sale last January, the Sonata is expected to continue gaining a lot of ground for the Koreanbrand. Hyundai is hoping the Sonata will win a lot of conquest sales from traditional brands likeToyota, Honda, Mazda and all of the domestic automakers too.

The standard 2.4-liter churns out 198 horsepower, while the sporty turbo spins out 274 horsepower.Both models can return upward of 30 mpg in combined driving as well, an impressive mark for a mid-sized sedan. All models are fitted with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Inside the Sonata is plush and comfortable, a rare find for a car that begins under $20,000. Op-tions range and the Sonata can be just as pricey as its competitors, but as a finalist for North Ameri-can Car of the Year in 2010, apparently the Sonata has something they may not.

Hyundai ::GenesisThe model that

may have changedeverything for Hyun-dai is back again thisyear and still just asexciting. When it wasreleased a few yearsago, the HyundaiGenesis redefined whatpeople thought theKorean automaker wasreally about. The qual-ity of the materials, thebuild and the ride waslight years ahead ofanything that Hyundaihad released before.

This year the Genesisremains largely thesame, with a slightboost in horsepower in its 5.0-liter V8 engine.

Inside, the Genesis will retain the luxe materials and feel that made it so popular. You’d be hardpressed to find softer leather than the cows at Hyundai laid down their lives for. Outside the Genesisis just as refined as it has been. The lack of Hyundai badging is interesting as the Equus line may takethe same direction as the Genesis. A coupe version is available again this year and brings the rear-wheel sedan solidly back into the performance realm it was developed in.

Starting at $34,200, the Genesis has its sights set on lofty competitors like the BMW 5-series, LexusGS, Infiniti M and Mercedes E-Class, but anyone who has driven one will tell you that it’s a realisticgoal for the surprising carmaker out of Korea.

Range Rover :: EvoqueThe news at Range Rover (by

extension, Land Rover) thesedays is the automaker’s brandnew model, the Evoque.A much smaller SUV, the

Evoque is a fundamental shiftfor the company in responseto a growing market for moreaffable, friendly crossovervehicles. The Evoque utilizesa uni-body construction forthe crossover’s skeleton thatresults in a smoother ride andeasier access. Land Rover usesbody-on frame construction formany of its vehicles resulting inlegendary capability, but alsorough rides.The Evoque is nearly two feet shorter than the parent Range Rover and nearly 400 lbs. lighter. Still

fitted with every interior luxury that the Range Rover offers, the Evoque should appeal to buyers look-ing for the Range Rover experience without the Range Rover’s fuel cost.

Despite being a bit of a softer off-roader than the other Range Rovers, the Evoque is turning headsearly based on its off-road chops. Rover’s Terrain Response system is standard in the Evoque, and the2-liter, inline 4-cylinder engine churns out an astonishingly powerful 240 horsepower.

Range Rover is hoping that big things will come from this small package.

Lexus ::GSThere’s a new Lexus com-

ing down the road, and theGS is at the front of the pack.The first in what the Toyota-

owned automaker says willbe nine new or significantlyredesigned models in thenext 18 months the new GSis a groundbreaking car forLexus.

Only 10 years ago, ut-tering the words “sporty” or“aggressive” while designinga Lexus would have beengrounds for dismissal, nowthe company is living behindthose tenets.The new 2012 Lexus GS is the first step in that direction.Redesigned from front to back the GS is an aggressive-looking sedan from the normally sedate auto-

maker. From the “spindle” pinched grille in the front to high waist along the sides, the GS is Lexus’sattempt at regaining ground in the luxury segment.Targeting competition like BMW and Mercedes, the GS is a sportier approach that handles more

like a German and less like a Lexus.The GS is powered by either a 3.5-liter V6 or a gas-hybrid engine combination and is offered in

either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations.For 2012, Lexus is also offering an F-Sport package that throws together aggressive style cues and

active steering for the rear wheels.There’s no word of a GS-F in the works, yet. Although we do hear that the LF-A’s massive V10

engine fits … stay tuned.

Audi ::R8Audi’s mid-engined

supercar made news lastyear when Audi unleashed asuper-tuned GT version lastyear.That version, staring at

$196,800, combined Audi’s5.2-liter V10 pulled fromsister company Lamborghiniand Audi’s prowess for over-engineering everything anddelivered blistering times andspeed everywhere it wentlast year. Engineers de-ployed acres of carbon fibereverywhere and dialed inthe already massive V10 todeliver 35 more horsepower to go with the Jenny Craig diet of lighter parts and stripped out interiors.The GT-less models still bring plenty of speed for 2012. The 4.2-liter V8 spins out 430 horsepower

and 316 ft.-lbs. of torque and the 5.2-liter still delivers 525 horses and 391 ft.-lbs. of torque. Thatequates to brisk 0-60 times in just over 4 seconds and just under 4 seconds depending on the enginesize. Audi also offers drop-top versions of both cars for a little more if open air is your preference.

Neither model comes cheap as the car is easily into the six-figure range and can run up to$150,000 in a hurry.

Little on the car will change from year to year, however it’s possible that Audi will introduce aspeedier dual-clutch transmission gearbox in the 2013 R8 sometime this year.

It’ll be hard to mess with the kind of perfection that the R8 offers and Audi’s flagship sports carshould hold the crown as an engineering wonder well into the year and beyond.

Fisker ::KarmaOne of the most awaited

alternative energy vehiclesshould be making its way toUtah soon.The 2012 Fisker Karma is

an “extended range electricvehicle” with hybrid gas-electric motors. The dual 201horsepower batteries arepaired with a 2.0-liter, 4-cyl-inder turbocharged enginethat creates 260 horsepower.The combined effect is a four-door sedan that churns outover 400 horsepower withnearly 1,000 ft.-lbs. of torque.All that power comes at a

price, however. The Fisker Karma will cost around $100,000 when it finally makes its way to show-rooms this year, but will be eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit.

Optional extras include a solar panel roof that can generate up to 200 miles of extended rangeach year, 10.2-inch touchscreen entertainment system, reclaimed wood interior and EcoSuede seat-ing materials.

Of course, the car is meant to appeal not only to the environmentally aware but also to the guilt-freegearheads looking for a quick ride.The Fisker Karma boasts a 0-60 mph time in the 6 second range when engines are combined. On

electric power alone, Fisker claims the Karma can run up to 60 mph in around 8 seconds.Fisker is counting on an electric future.

Dodge ::ChallengerEven though this year may

be the last for the Challengerto hold the crown as Chrys-ler’s fastest production car— the 2013 Viper should becoming soon — that doesn’tmean the Dodge Challengerwill rest on its laurels.

Last year the Dodge Chal-lenger received Chrysler’smassive 392 cubic inchpowerplant for SRT8 modelsalong with incrementalupgrades over the 2011models. At its base thoughthe Challenger is still potentwith a 305-horsepower V6as standard and 18-inch shoes. A 5.7-liter V8 is available for weekend warriors looking for a biggerbang and with $3,000 more to spend on the two-door coupe.

Dodge’s re-entry to the pony car market has played second fiddle behind the Ford Mustang andChevrolet Camaro, and the future of the car is questionable. Rumors of a supercharger or some sortof ‘Cuda resurrection for Chrysler have Mopar fans drooling, but slumping sales and rising fleet MPGstandards mean the Challenger may not have much longer.

But it’s undeniable that the Dodge muscle car will be here for 2012, and by the looks of things, it’llstill smoke ‘em while it’s got ‘em.

Ford ::MustangPresumably, one would

expect that Ford’s most iconiccar would go the way of therest of their fleet and tradehorsepower for MPG amidstan energy concern and risingfuel prices. One would bewrong.The new 2013 Ford

Mustang, which will be onsale this spring, is among themost powerful Mustang everwith a jaw-dropping versionthat’s likely to be the talk inautomotive circles for quitea while.The 2013 Mustang and

Mustang GT will receive incremental upgrades this year over last, with the addition of a newhood, new lights in the front and track apps for the spry buyers who want to take their pony carto the track.The Mustang will be equipped with a standard V6 that can churn out over 300 horsepower

and return 30 mpg, while the GT will benefit from an upgraded 5.0-liter V8 that now delivers420 horsepower — up from 412 last year.

The atom bomb engineers from Dearborn dropped last year was that the 2013 Ford ShelbyGT500 would crank out an eye-watering 650 horsepower with 600 pound-feet of torque.The super Shelby is positioned to compete against the Camaro ZL1 next year. Who says the

muscle car wars have to be over?

Chevrolet ::CamaroThis year the

Camaro notched animportant milestone inthe car’s lengthy andstoried resume: it out-sold the Ford Mustang.

The Camaro,longtime rival in thepony car wars withthe Mustang, usuallyplayed second fiddle,but not last year. Thesuper sleek Camarodid extremely wellwith potential buyers,as did the convertibleversion.

Last year, Chevrolet introduced an insanely powered ZL1 Camaro with nearly 600 horsepowerthanks to a supercharged 6.2-liter V8.

This year the Camaro and Camaro Convertible should see incremental upgrades in horsepowerand interior features, as the car isn’t likely to change much for the coming year. Chevrolet is also likelyto introduce a drop top version of the uber-quick ZL1.

Thanks to movies and good looks, the Camaro has gone from 0 to mega seller in only a coupleshort years.

Chevrolet should be teasing what the future of this vehicle will be late in 2012 to keep fans droolingfor years more.

Chevrolet ::CorvetteThe American icon returns

this year as Chevrolet entersits second century of exis-tence. Last year the Corvetterefined its already impressivestance with bigger brakesand a more refined six-speedautomatic transmission withpaddle shifters.

The top-end model, theZR1, also made its way intosports car lore by bring-ing a thunderous 6.2-litersupercharged V8 that mademore than 630 horsepowerand more than 600 ft.-lbs. oftorque. The ZR1 set recordsaround the world, and completed a scorching lap at Germany’s famed Nurburgring in just over 7minutes — one of the fastest times recorded by a production vehicle. The car is also the fastest carever made by General Motors with a top speed of 205 mph.

Chevrolet also introduced a Centennial Edition of the ZR1 for the 2012 model year that willcelebrate the car’s heritage while looking forward to a monumental year for the car made in BowlingGreen, Kentucky.

As usual, General Motors is tight-lipped about what 2013 has to offer but there are a few tanta-lizing details. The all-new generation, dubbed C7, should arrive sometime in the fall and feature acompletely redesigned body style. In past years, some insiders have theorized that the new Corvettecould be mid-engined however that kind of break from tradition would be nearly unthinkable. Whatis possible — and perhaps likely — is that the new Corvette could drop two cylinders in some modelsand be some sort of forced-induction V6.

Chevrolet too may turn focus inside and revamp the interior quite a bit, as critics have often saidthat the Corvette’s interior is behind its exterior and engine.

No matter the change, it’ll be exciting to see what the next 100 years has in store for one ofAmerica’s greatest sports cars.

Chevrolet :: SonicBig things should be coming

from this little car fromChevrolet.

The successor to the fleet-ready Aveo, the Sonic has beenearning praise as the smartestsmall car GM has built to date.

And it’s a small car for sure.The subcompact frame only

has a 100-inch wheelbase andis powered by a 1.8-liter busyinline four-cylinder engine ora 1.4-liter turbocharged fourcylinder. The 138 horsepowerboth motors produce is plenty tohaul its slender sub-3,000 lbs.of sheet metal around. Mileageestimates peg the Sonic into thehigh 30s for standard modelsand 40 mpg is possible in the eco-minded model with accompanying aero kit.

Plenty of praise has been heaped on the Sonic so far, with critics admiring the materials GM hasused and the lessons learned from the reasonably successful Cruze model.

The Sonic comes in both 2- and 4-door variations with sedan and hatchback models available.In the compact segment, however, pricing is everything. Much like the Ford Fiesta, Toyota Yaris and

Honda Fit, the Sonic’s pricing originates sub-$15,000 — though not by much. The turbocharged ver-sions should be hitting showroom floors later this year along with several revisions that will target theSonic toward the youthful market Chevrolet is looking to capture.

Keep a lookout for a hot hatch version of the Sonic RS due on sale in late 2012 that’ll be more toss-able than morning hair.

Chevrolet ::VoltFits and starts marked

the Chevrolet Volt’s firstyear of existence in 2011.

Salt Lake City didn’tsee its models until wellinto 2011, although thegroundbreaking electric-first, gas-second has beenaround now for a coupleyears.

The Volt was besiegedin 2011 by bad press forwhat has been universallyaccepted to be a goodcar. The car’s range onelectric alone has beenmore than adequate, andbuyers’ stories of making atank of gas last months inthe Volt have been plentiful.

The $40,000 sedan — that’s before any federal tax savings the car can qualify for, which is up to$7,500 — has plenty to be excited about as well.

Modeled after the Chevrolet Cruze, the Volt is an exercise in General Motors’ new direction forquality interiors. Lightweight, soft touch materials are utilized throughout the Volt’s cabin and the caroffers the latest and greatest in interior accessories.

Two 7-inch touch screens are used inside to deliver entertainment and controls.Outside, the Volt looks like little more than just an ordinary sedan. Styling cues like a rounded and

flush front fascia help the Volt cut through air easier, reducing drag and increasing overall mileage.The Volt has an interesting year ahead in 2012 as buyers warm to the idea of alternative fuel

vehicles.To slightly adapt GM’s marketing slogan for the Volt’s tumultuous year, it wasn’t easy being the first.

Chevrolet ::VoltFits and starts marked

the Chevrolet Volt’s firstyear of existence in 2011.

Infiniti ::G seriesTwo years after introduc-

ing the smaller enginedG25, the Infiniti G series isback for 2012 with plentyto offer.

The sedan, which sharesa skeleton with the Nissansports coupe 370Z is avail-able in two very differentengine sizes depending onyour need for speed.

The G25 sedan andcoupe are powered by a2.5-liter V6 while the G37is powered by a much morepotent 3.7-liter V6.

The coupe version alsocomes in an insanely tunedIPL but it’s unclear how manyof those we’ll actually seeover the course of the G’s lifespan.

One thing is for sure, any of the G range is handsomely equipped to fight in the uber-competitivesmall sedan market. The outside curves may be the most handsome of any within the segment and thethoughtfully appointed leather and accessories are nice all the same.

Infiniti offers the G in either all-wheel or rear-wheel drive.It’s unclear what, if any, changes we’ll see in 2013. The G series won’t be due for a significant

body restyling for several more years, so it’s likely that the range gets incremental upgrades this year.Early next year, though, we should be seeing a more significant update to the G range and shouldlikely mimic the car that was shown by Infiniti in Geneva in 2011.

That car, called the Essence, may even be powered by a Daimler engine and could even be calleda Skyline, borrowing the name for a famous Nissan sold everywhere else.

It’ll certainly be interesting to watch this time around.

Nissan ::XterraNearly unchanged out-

side since the nameplate’sdebut in 2000, the Xterraputs to good use its longwheelbase of 106 incheswith nearly 9 inches ofground clearance (morewhen equipped in Pro 4-Xspec.) Off-roading types— you know, the peoplethat consider Moab adivinely inspired challengeto their manhood — willappreciate the Xterra’s30-some degree approachangle and nearly identicaldeparture angle. Better chops can be had with different sets of rubber equipped, but that’s almost agiven for people who’ve committed the location of Hell’s Backbone to memory.

Outside the Xterra walks the walk too. Flared wheel arches, tall riding height and more ruggedplastic than a Tupperware party complete the “watch this” look. Saying the Xterra is nimble on thefreeway is a bit of a stretch, considering the SUV was built to succeed at 20 mph or less. But the lad-der frame chassis and towering stature are mitigated through Nissan’s use of creature comforts like aRockford Fosgate stereo and forgiving seats. Everyday use won’t require keeping a chiropractor onretainer anymore.

Between the doors, the Xterra balances ergonomic with urban-warfare pretty nicely too. There areofficial nods to rugged use like wipe-down cargo mats and hooks aplenty, but there are also featureslike Bluetooth handsfree telephone and the aforementioned thump-tastic 300-watt stereo.

Seating for five adults is easy and a 60/40-split rear folding backseat increases cargo volumeto over 60 cubic feet, when hauling bikes, gear, canoes and general provisions for conquering theLouisiana Purchase.

Nissan ::GT-RHow do you improve on the

car that has it all?Horsepower, of course. The

2013 Nissan GT-R ups the totalkick this year to 545 horse-power, up from a meager 530horsepower last year. Although,that figure could be lower aseach GT-R’s twin-turbocharged3.8-liter V6 engine is still handbuilt in Nissan’s clean rooms.Early GT-Rs were pegged tohave much higher horsepowerratings than Nissan anticipated.

Nonetheless, the car is stillcapable of running from 0-60mph in fewer than 4 seconds,and will likely accelerate at thesame pace all the way up to itstop speed around 195 mph. For this year, Nissan again tweaked the suspension and other fittings tomaximize the car’s potential. A six-speed gearbox channels power from the engine to all four of theGT-R’s wheels through its sophisticated all-wheel drive system.

Inside, the GT-R hasn’t changed much. Technically the car can seat up to four people, however it’scertainly not the car’s mandate.

It’s unclear when the GT-R will see a significant revision, however it should be coming soon as thecar is ending a traditional life cycle in the states and may see serious work in 2014.

Infiniti :: JXInfiniti is the latest luxury

automaker to jump into the7-passenger SUV fold.

Behind other automakerslike Audi, BMW and Mer-cedes, Infiniti announcedlast year their intentions tobuild a larger SUV basedof the Nissan Pathfinderplatform.

Featuring a 3.5-liter V6and CVT, the JX is likelyto be super smooth on theroad and off it with a longwheelbase with short bodyoverhangs.

Infiniti has said that the second and third rows of seating will have more legroom than a CadillacEscalade, however, it’ll get significantly better gas mileage compared to the big SUV.

The exterior reflects Infiniti’s “emotive” touch, with sweeping curves and an interestingly designedD-pillar and glass. The front of the JX will share similar features as the current FX range, however, fromthere the similarities end.

Inside, the JX is as opulent as you’d expect from Infiniti. The cabin features a 15-speaker stereosystem by Bose including an all-new subwoofer from the speaker maker.

The car will appear for the first time as a model year 2013 later this year.Infiniti is hoping that more families will turn to smarter SUVs like the JX to accomplish what gargan-

tuan SUVs used to only 5 years ago.

GMC :: 2500HDLast year GMC used only two

words to describe their range ofheavy duty pickup trucks: “Jobready.”

That was mostly true as buyersflocked to GMC for their “jobready” pickups, breaking severalsales records last year — includ-ing big gains in the summermonths — and earning well-deserved hardware from Pickup-Trucks.com as the best overall HDtruck last year.

This year little will change forthe pickup that earned heapingpraise last year.

The Sierra HD, and by exten-sion the Silverado HD, still features a best-in-class towing capacity of over 11 tons, and a payloadcapacity of over 7,000 lbs. Offered in 10 Sierra 2500HD models, eight 3500HD models and sixDenali models, the Sierra offers a wide range of convenience for interested buyers.

Perhaps unexpectedly, GMC Sierra Denali models drove some of 2011’s sales success. Accord-ing to GMC, the Denali editions appeal to buyers looking to equip long hauls with plenty of creaturecomforts.

The Sierra HD range is offered in two different engine options, a 6.0-liter V8 or a 6.6-liter DuramaxDiesel as optional. Two- and four-wheel-drive configurations are available as well as differing boxlengths.

GMC is also offering more standard equipment on its work truck series of Sierra HDs, such as cruisecontrol and high-visibility mirrors.

After all, GMC says their heavy duty range is job ready.

GMC ::AcadiaWell known as a pow-

erhouse when it comes topowerplants, GMC is alsoriding high from a successfulyear with an unlikely winnerin their range.

The GMC Acadia is enter-ing its fifth year and salesare still strong — the Acadiaposted a 12 percent gain inthe first four months of 2011.Success on the lot hasn’t beena big surprise however, the7-seater crossover has beena hit for buyers looking forversatility and practicality.

Available in four trim lev-els: SL, SLE, SLT and Denali,the Acadia shares a similar platform as the Chevrolet Equinox, one of the most popular crossovers inthe U.S. Both Equinox and Acadia are available in two- or all-wheel-drive and can be apportionedwith everything from sunroofs to satellite radios.

Powered by a 3.6-liter V6, the Acadia eschews capability without being brutish. The 288 horse-power is spun through a smooth six-speed automatic transmission that aims to maximize comfortand return on fuel economy. The EPA estimates peg the Acadia at 17/24 mpg for front-wheel drivemodels.

On the inside, the Acadia makes all the right noises for families. A power lift gate, tri-zone auto-matic climate controls and rearview cameras are available as family-friendly options. Other amenitieslike leather-wrapped steering wheel, back seat entertainment system and 10-speaker Bose stereo areavailable options for interested buyers.

All that starting at $32,000 means the Acadia could be popular for its sixth year running.

Buick ::VeranoBuick’s first compact luxury entry

landed in 2011 and was off quickly.Built to compete in a growing

market dominated by imported luxurybrands like Lexus, Audi and BMW.

The Verano, based on the ChevroletCruze was unveiled last year at theNorth American International AutoShow and rolled off the productionlines shortly thereafter.

Powered by a 2.4-liter Ecotec inlinefour cylinder, the brisk Verano pro-duces 180 horsepower in a car thatweighs a little more than 1.5 tons.

Outside the Verano adopts manyof the same Buick styling cues foundon the larger Regal and LaCrossemodels. The wedge approach is well rounded around the Verano’s sides and retains its sharp qualitiesaround a cutting front grille.

Inside, well-appointed materials have been earning round praise from critics. The Verano continuesthe Buick tradition of seamless elegance with an absence of gaudy materials in favor of a tasteful,sophisticated interior.

The Verano comes standard with 18-inch wheels, standard six-speed automatic transmission and10 standard airbags among other features. Optioning the Verano up brings leather, heated seatsand steering wheel, premium paint and premium stereo. Even with all that, the Verano has a hardtime cracking $30,000 — the average price for a new car in America. Buick has smartly priced theVerano starting around $22,000 to compete with import competition and should make a compellingargument for those shoppers.

Buick ::RegalBuick had a big year in

2011 and it’s looking tocars like the Regal to carryits success well into 2012.

Three distinct engineoptions for the mid-sizedluxury sedan should ap-peal to a wide swath ofluxury buyers this year.Buick offers the Regal in aneco-friendly eAssist optionwith “light electrification”paired with a 2.4-literfour-cylinder model all theway up to a performance-minded GS that’ll sprintto 60 mph in 6.5 secondsand six-speed manualtransmission.

The base model is still brisk with a 2.4-liter Ecotec engine that delivers 182 horsepower and up to31 mpg. Tack on 18-inch wheels and a sporty exterior and the Regal isn’t exactly your grandfather’sBuick anymore.

Buick is making strides this year to separate itself from domestic luxury competition with cars like theRegal and Verano. Exterior styling like low, aggressive intakes and a stylized rear end are giving theBuick a youthful touch without separating it too far from the class that has become synonymous withthe Buick badge before.

Inside the Regal is just as interesting. Dual-zone air conditioning, OnStar, leather, heated seats andleather-wrapped steering wheel come as standard for just over $26,000 base price. Optional equip-ment include a 336 watt, Harman/kardon nine-speaker stereo and chrome accents, and on the sportyGS model, 20-inch summer performance tires are available.

Look for big things from Buick this year.

Subaru :: ImprezaThe 2012 Subaru Impreza

is all new this year and off toan impressive start.

Completely redesigned from2011, the Impreza features anew interior, powertrain andexterior to compete with entry-level buyers looking for valuefrom their sedans.

Subaru made the all-wheel-drive Impreza lighter andsmarter thanks to overalldesign and a lengthenedwheelbase. The overall lengthof the car didn’t change much,however backseat passengerswere given an extra few inches in the rear for better legroom.

Under the hood, Subaru swapped a decade-old engine in favor of a more fuel-efficient flat four thatgets up to 36 mpg when paired with its CVT transmission. The result is a markedly more efficient car— the long-time knock on Subarus was that they were too thirsty at the pump — and the payoff hasbeen well received. Subaru acknowledged that it took a gamble with less horsepower but the effectdriving is hardly noticeable.

This year is the first model year of the redesigned Impreza, and 2013 should see small upgradesfrom the 2012 model year. The performance-minded WRX and STI didn’t change body styles, some-thing that Subaru may change for 2013, however it’s unclear how those models will fit into the lineupwith the introduction of the two-door coupe BRZ.

As it stands, Subaru should win over mountain-state buyers looking for value and performancealong with capability in adverse weather conditions.

Subaru :: ForesterDon’t look

now, butSubaru’s futuremay rest withmodels like theImpreza andForester.

The For-ester has beena popular pickfor crossoverbuyers wholike the addedconfidence ofall-wheel-drivealong with theability to haulplenty of gear.

Last year, the 2012 Forester was the first model in Subaru’s range to receive the newly designedflat-four cylinder engine and the reception was largely positive. Efficiency for those models was uparound 10 percent and those gains should increase as engineers look to maximize economy further inthe new engine.

This year should see minor improvements in the Forester with several changes to the interior andperhaps some new bodywork. The Forester’s 103-inch wheelbase is acutely adept at climbing moun-tain roads and handling snow and inclement weather, as are the 170-horsepower engine that comesstandard and the optional 224-horsepower turbocharged variant.

Looming in the background however is the Subaru XV crossover concept that was unveiled last year.The Impreza-based ute may not actually replace the Forester in Subaru’s lineup for the future, howeverthe similarities to the Forester are undeniable.

Subaru ::OutbackUtah’s state flag may as well

have an Outback on it.Subaru has long been popu-

lar in the mountain states andnortheastern states thanks to itssymmetrical all-wheel drive sys-tem and prowess in the snow.

The 2012 Outback didn’tstray much from the 2011 Out-back aside from a few cosmeticupgrades and option packageshuffling.

Subaru still offers the Out-back with two different engineoptions, a 2.5-liter four cylinderand a 3.6-liter six cylinder, bothhorizontally opposed.

Subuaru’s famous sym-metrical all-wheel-drive comesstandard, as does the Outback’s enormous capability. The Outback features nearly 9 inches of groundclearance, the same as an SUV, and can go just about anywhere.

The Outback benefitted a few years ago from the base Legacy’s improvements, including a longer,pushed back wheelbase and slightly elongated frame. Seating in the back seat is much more accom-modating for adults, and families should have no problem replacing their SUV with an Outback.

Subaru is tight-lipped about what’s in store for the Outback in 2013, but the smaller-displacementengine should be getting a universal upgrade like the other Subaru models have received, even at theloss of potential horsepower.

Very little changes on the Outback from year-to-year and that’s a good thing: Outback buyers knowthe car is incredibly capable as-is.

Subaru ::BRZ-STiStrangely, one of the

most anticipated modelswill be coming from twoautomakers with very littleto do with each other.

The Scion FR-S, whichwill debut first this spring,is the first model from aSubaru/Toyota collabora-tion years in the making.Based entirely from a long-time concept, the ToyotaFT-86, the car isn’t new toenthusiasts, but should stillbe enough to drool over.

The front-engined, rearwheel drive sports carpurportedly makes 200horsepower and has alower center of gravity than a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Scion-parent company Toyota and Subaru haven’t disclosed how the two automakers will differenti-ate the two models from each other, but it’s widely believed that the Scion model may be the moreaffordable of the two, while the Subaru model could be more track-tuned.

Pricing for both hasn’t been announced, but both should be somewhere below $30,000 with theSubaru being more expensive.

Unofficial tests peg the 0-60 mph time around 7 seconds and the BRZ/FR-S should give the MazdaMiata a run for best pure sportscar experience under $30,000.

Stay tuned.
