The Big South Conference took a big step in its young history in the Fall of 2002 when, forthefirsttimeinits19-yearhistory,theLeague crowned a football champion.

Football had always been a long range goal of the Conference. In the early 1990s, football seemed on the horizon in the Big South, asCharlestonSouthernfielded itsfirst team in 1991 and the Conferenceadded Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, footballnevergotoffthegroundin the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awarded itsfirstautomaticbidtotheNCAAmen’sbasketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketballbegantoflourish.

The idea was revived in 1997 when Elon joined the Big South. That gave the Conferencethreefull-timememberswithfootball programs -- half the number needed to be recognized as a Conference by the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would add football by the Fall of 2003. The wheels were set in motiontoestablishaConferencehomeforthe League’s football-playing members.

After attempts to form a joint footballconference with the Atlantic SunConference failed, the Big South began recruiting more members to join itsfledgling football league. On May 23,2001, the dream became a reality when theBigSouth’sCouncilofChiefExecutiveOfficersvotedunanimouslytoaddfootballas the Conference’s 18th championship sport.Itbecamethefirstsportaddedsince1997 when men’s and women’s indoor track were incorporated as championship sports.

Shortlyaftertheapprovaloffootball,theBigSouth’srecruitingeffortspaidoff,astheadditionofGardner-WebbUniversityasanassociate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that withtheadditionoftheRunnin’Bulldogs,a four-team League could begin play later

that Fall, with Coastal Carolina coming into the fold in the 2003 season. However, scheduling conflicts couldnotbeworkedout, so the Fall of 2002 was designated asthekick-offtoBigSouthFootball. TheBigSouthcontinuedtolookforadditionalmembers, with a goal of eventually having seven or eight playing members. On Dec. 10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state of Virginia -- Virginia Military Institute, announceditwouldjointheBigSouth in all sports in 2003 and maintain the Conference’s football membership at fivefollowingElon’sdeparture.

In 2006, the League moved one step closer to etching its status as a viable football Conference.First,CoastalCarolinaAthleticDirector Warren Koegel was appointed to theFCSFootballSelectionCommittee, theBig South’s first-ever representative on anational football committee. OnApril 6,the Big South added Presbyterian College as its sixth football member. Presbyterian, now in the final year of its transition toDivision I, officially joined the Big Southin all sports in 2008. On May 26, 2006, the Big South announced that associate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008, solidifying the Big South’s football make-up for years to come.

With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion of the 2006 campaign. League champion Coastal Carolina became the first football member to advance tothe postseason when the Chanticleersreceived an at-large berth in the NCAA Division I Football Championship. The Big South took another step closer to becomingeligible foranautomaticberthwhen on March 20, 2007, the Conference announced the addition of Stony BrookUniversity as an associate football member beginningin2008.Alltheeffortscametofruition in the spring of 2008 when theNCAA announced the expansion of the FCS Playoffsfrom16to20teamsbeginningin

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN

AND BEYOND... Charleston is America’s most beautifully preserved architectural and historic treasure, with a rich, 300-year history just waiting to be discovered. Hundreds of significant and lovingly preserved structures from the colonial and antebellum peri-ods grace the historic district’s narrow streets. Church bells toll the hour as history unfolds around each and every corner. In no other place are the past and present more intertwined. The entire Charleston area is a never-ending feast for the senses, with history serving as the main course. Visit Charles Towne Landing, the site where the original settlement was established in 1670. Explore the Charleston Museum, our nation’s first museum, or Patriot’s Point, the world’s largest naval and maritime museum and home of World War II’s Fight-ing Lady, the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. Drive to Fort Moultrie, scene of the first decisive American victory of the American Revolution, and a mainstay of shore defense until 1947. Take a scenic boat tour to Fort Sumter, the manmade island fortress where the Civil War began. World-famous plantations and gardens offer visitors a fascinating glimpse into life during the antebellum era. Informative tours of the Charleston area are offered daily and are a must for all who want to truly appreciate this living museum. The area’s lush sea islands and sun-drenched beaches offer as much recreation or relaxation as your heart desires. Golf is on a world-class level, with challenging courses reflecting the natural beauty of the South Carolina Lowcountry. Charter fishing on the Gulf stream or inshore waters is readily available. Shopping is one of our vistors’ most passionate pursuits. Marvel at native sweetgrass baskets and handmade crafts found in Charleston’s famous open-air market, or browse through inviting boutiques, art galleries and antique shops found throughout the Charleston area. When it comes to dining, your biggest decision may be just what to try next. Every meal is a celebration of tastes, with a variety that ranges from traditional oyster roasts to fine continental dining. If festivals strike your fancy, you have come to the right place. You will be dazzled by a diverse array of special events. At any time of year, you will always find more to see, do and experience than you ever imagined ... in a place where warm welcomes have been a treasured tradition for over 300 years.
