LB CLANCY HONORED BY CONFERENCE

Senior Nick Clancy earned Atlantic Coast Conference Linebacker of the Week honors on Sept. 17. Clancy, a 6-foot-3, 232-

pound senior from Plainfi eld, Ill., registered a career-high 24 tackles – 14 solo and 10 assisted tackles – in Boston College’s

22-13 loss at Northwestern on Sept. 15, marking the second-most tackles in one game in school history and the highest

single-game tackle total since Frank Chamberlain matched the school record with a 25-tackle performance against

Syracuse in 1999. Chamberlain shares the school record with Stephen Boyd, who tallied 25 tackles against Virginia Tech

in 1994, and Tom McManus, who recorded 25 tackles against Rutgers in 1991. Clancy entered the season with a career

single-game high of seven tackles (against Wake Forest in 2009), leads the nation in tackles per game (14.3) through three

games in 2012.

BILETNIKOFF CANDIDATE

Junior wide receiver Alex Amidon was one of eight receivers added to the watch list for the 2012 Biletnikoff Award given to

the nation’s premier receiver, the Tallahasse Quarterback Club Foundation (the awards creator and sponsor) announced on

Sept. 18. Amidon has established career highs for receptions (25) and receiving yards (366) through three games in 2012.

The 5-foot-11, 186-pound junior leads all Atlantic Coast Conference receivers and ranks fourth among all collegiate players

in the country in receiving yards per game (122.0 ypg). Most recently, Amidon registered game-highs for receptions (nine)

and receiving yards (118) in the team’s 22-13 loss at Northwestern (Sept. 15). He recorded single-game career highs for

receptions (10) and yards (149) in BC’s 41-32 season-opening loss to Miami (Sept. 1).

3 – The Eagles have produced a top-10 pick in the NFL draft three

times in the last fi ve years – QB Matt Ryan (3rd; 2008), DT B.J. Raji

(9th; 2009) and LB Luke Kuechly (9th; 2012).

3 – Boston College has had one of its former linebackers on each

of the last three Super Bowl winning teams – Mark Herzlich (NY

Giants, 2012), Robert Francois (Packers, 2011) and Jo-Lonn Dunbar

(Saints, 2010).

6 – Boston College was the most represented collegiate football

program in Super Bowl XLVI as there were six former Eagles that were

on either the New England Patriots roster or the New York Giants

roster – defensive end Ron Brace ’08 and center Dan Koppen ’02,

roster members of the Patriots, and cornerback Will Blackmon ’06,

linebacker Mark Herzlich ’10, defensive end Mathias Kiwanuka ’05

and guard Chris Snee ’04 were each roster members of the Giants.

By the Numbers ...The Last Time Out

Boston College 3 7 0 3 13

Northwestern 6 6 3 7 22

EVANSTON, Ill. (Sept. 15, 2012) – Mike Trumpy ran for 106 yards with a late touchdown and Northwestern beat Boston College, 22-13.

Jeff Budzien tied a school record with fi ve fi eld goals and the Wildcats (3-0) made it three wins over three BCS teams to start the season

even though they didn’t reach the end zone until the closing minutes. They downed a punt at the 1 to pin Boston College (1-2) against the

goal line and took over on the Eagles’ 44 with 2:35 left in the game after they went three-and-out. Kain Colter threw for 144 yards and ran

for 66, while Trevor Siemian threw for 123 yards. Venric Mark ran for 77 yards but spent the fourth quarter on the sideline limping with an

undisclosed lower body injury. Chase Rettig came up big for Boston College, completing 24 of 44 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown,

but the Eagles fell short. That led to a 19-yarder by Budzien to make it 15-10 late in the third, but again, the fi eld goal came after a missed

opportunity. This time, Colter overthrew a wide open Christian Jones in the end zone on second down at the 6 before getting stopped on a

4-yard run. Nate Freese pulled Boston College within two with a 34-yard fi eld goal in the opening seconds of the fourth.

4 2012 BOSTON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

LAST CLEMSON MEETING

Junior quarterback Chase Rettig completed 13-of-20 passes for 129 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but

Clemson quarterback Tahj Boyd threw for one touchdown as the host Tigers defeated the Eagles, 36-14, at Clemson Memo-

rial Stadium. Clemson got fi ve fi eld goals from Chandler Catanzaro and 117 yards and one touchdown from running back

Andre Ellington to earn the conference victory. BC's Rettig hit classmate Bobby Swigert for a 24-yard touchdown pass to

trim the visitors defi cit to 26-14 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. Clemson responded with a fi eld goal before the close

of the third quarter and a touchdown early in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The Eagles fell to 2-2 in their previous

four trips to Death Valley.

RETURN SPECIALIST

Sophomore wide receiver and return specialist • Spiff y Evans returned two punts for 93 yards, including an 82-yard

punt return for a touchdown in the third quarter in Boston College’s 34-3 non-conference win over Maine at Alumni

Stadium. Evans’ 82-yard return marked the fi rst BC punt return for a TD since Rich Gunnell’s 45-yard punt return for a

TD on Sept. 5, 2009 against Northeastern and the longest BC punt return since Jamal Burke’s 83-yarder (also for a TD)

against Virginia Tech on Oct. 10, 2002. Evans also registered career highs for receptions (four) and receiving yards

(53) in Saturday’s win. He recorded his fi rst collegiate touchdown reception – a three-yard reception with 7:09 left

in the second quarter.

BLISTERING PACE

Junior K • Nate Freese leads the Atlantic Coast Conference and ranks second in the nation with 2.33 fi eld goals per

game. Freese, from Strongsville, Ohio, was successful on two fi eld-goal attempts (from 34 yards and 21 yards) at

freshman, 10-of-16 as a sophomore and is 7-for-7 through three games as a junior.

Freese connected on all three fi eld goal attempts – from distances of 26, 37 and 30 yards, respectively – in Boston •

College’s 41-32 loss to Miami. It marked the sixth time in his career that he kicked three (or more) fi eld goals in a

52012 BOSTON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

BOSTON COLLEGE DEBUTS

Seven Boston College freshmen have seen action through the team’s fi rst three games of 2012 – TE • Dan Crimmins,

LB Steven Daniels, TE Mike Giacone, WR Harrison Jackson, DB Bryce Jones, LB Tim Joy, DB Justin Simmons.

Five full-time coaches – off ensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach • Doug Martin (Oak Ridge, Tenn.), off ensive line/

running game coordinator Jim Bollman (Ashtabula, Ohio), running backs/special teams coach Sean Desai (Shel-

ton, Conn.), wide receivers coach Aaron Smith (West Point, N.Y.) and assistant special teams/assistant defensive

line coach Al Washington (Columbus, Ohio) – each coached in their fi rst Boston College game on Sept. 1 against

Miami.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PIONEER HONORED

At halftime of the season-opening game against Miami, Boston College honored • Lou Montgomery of the class

of 1941 by retiring his jersey. He was the fi rst African-American football player to wear Boston College’s Maroon

and Gold. He was an exciting and highly skilled running back and a major off ensive contributor to the Eagles teams

that won 19 of 20 regular-season games in his junior and senior seasons and earned invitations to the 1940 Cotton

Bowl and the 1941 Sugar Bowl. Tragically, because of the severe and unjust racial segregation customs of that era,

Lou Montgomery was not allowed to participate in either of those post-season games or in regular-season games

against teams from the South. Rising above that unspeakable prejudice, Lou Montgomery never compromised his

own high principles, his undaunted spirit or his unwavering support of his teammates and fellow Boston College

students. His jersey is now permanently displayed on the southeast facade of Alumni Stadium, where is has been

added to the commemorative jerseys of Boston College’s top football legends.

DAVENPORT, JAVORSKI EARN SCHOLARSHIPS

Defensive back • Ted Davenport and running back Mike Javorski earned full scholarships, it was announced by

head coach Frank Spaziani on Wednesday, August 22. Davenport is a 6-foot-2, 209-pound product of Medway,

Mass. Javorski is a 5-foot-7, 165-pound product of LaGrande, Ill. and St. Ignatius Prep. Javorski is a biology major

and Davenport is a fi nance major who served as an orientation leader for the Boston College First-Year Experience

program during the summer months of 2012.

CLEARY, NOEL, PANTALE, RAMSEY ELECTED CAPTS.

Seniors • Emmett Cleary, Jim Noel, Chris Pantale and Kaleb Ramsey were named captains on August 6 by a

vote of their peers. Cleary, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound product of Arlington Heights, Ill., is a two-time All-Atlantic Coast

Conference Academic team honoree. Noel is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound safety from Everett, Mass., was awarded the

program's Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship in April 2012. Pantale is a 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end from Wayne,

N.J. who has 77 career receptions for 797 yards and fi ve touchdowns in the last three seasons. Pantale is expected

to miss several weeks after sustaining a foot injury during camp. Ramsey, the 6-foot-3, 302-pound defensive tackle

from Uniontown, Pa., was granted a medical hardship waiver following injury in the team's season-opening game

against Northwestern last fall.

THE LAST TIME IT HAPPENED ...

12 2012 BOSTON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) - Freshman Duke Johnson broke two long touchdown runs, rushing for 135 yards to lead

Miami to a 41-32 victory over Boston College.

Johnson scored from 54 and 56 yards out for the Hurricanes, and Stephen Morris threw for 207 yards and a touchdown

in the season opener for both teams. The schools also played each other in the 2011 finale, when BC beat the

Hurricanes in Miami for the first time since Doug Flutie’s famous desperation pass in 1984.

Chase Rettig led BC on two quick touchdown drives to open the game, scoring on Andre Williams’ 4-yard run on the

first drive of the game and then a 15-yard pass to Jake Sinkovec. But Miami tied it before the quarter was over, scoring

on Eduardo Clements’ 1-yard run and then, on the final play of the first, Denzel Perryman’s 41-yard interception

return.

After Nate Freese kicked a 26-yard field goal to give BC the lead again, Johnson broke loose from 54 yards out and

scored to make it 21-17. BC took the lead with two more field goals, but Miami’s Jake Wieclaw answered with one and

then Johnson broke another long one.

Rettig completed 32 of 51 passes for 441 yards and two touchdowns for BC, which led 14-0 after its first two

possessions. But Johnson’s second score made it 31-23, and then the Eagles fumbled the ball away on consecutive

drives to start the fourth quarter. That set up a field goal and touchdown to give Miami a 41-23 lead.

BC cut the deficit on Rettig’s 17-yard touchdown pass to Tahj Kimble, but it wasn’t enough. Late in the fourth quarter,

the Eagles came up just short of the goal line on a third-down pass to Spiffy Evans. With the clock below 2:30, Rettig

quickly lined up and tried to sneak it in but was stopped for no gain. The play was reviewed and upheld.

Miami took an intentional safety with 4 seconds left rather than punt from deep in its own end zone.

132012 BOSTON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) - Junior quarterback Chase Rettig threw three touchdown passes, and sophomore Spiffy

Evans caught one score and ran a punt back 82 yards for another as Boston College beat Maine 34-3. Junior place-

kicker Nate Freese booted two field goals, helping the Eagles rebound from a season-opening loss to Miami last week.

The loss was the season opener and the 1,000th game for Maine’s program. Brian Harvey had a 19-yard field goal for

the Black Bears. Rettig went 16 of 32 for 219 yards and no interceptions. Junior running back Rolandan Finch carried

17 times for 90 yards.

The longtime hockey rivals were locked in a surprisingly tight battle before the Eagles scored 17 points in the final

7:09 of the second quarter. Boston College broke it open with a field goal and two TDs late in the third. Maine’s

Marcus Wasilewski was 20 of 42 for 134 yards and two interceptions.

It was just the seventh meeting between the schools, with the first five coming before 1930. The Eagles outgained

the Black Bears by nearly 100 yards in the opening quarter, but fumbled it away twice and trailed 3-0 after one.

In the second, BC avoided turning the ball over, got its offense on track and marched 62 yards in nine plays with Rettig

capping the drive with a 3-yard TD toss to Evans to move ahead 7-3. Rettig completed a pair of passes for 27 yards,

moving the ball deep into Maine’s territory, before junior Andre Williams carried to the 3 to set up the score.

After the Black Bears gave the ball back to BC at its own 10 following a botched snap on a punt attempt, the Eagles

made it 14-3 on Rettig’s 9-yard scoring strike to Johnathan Coleman, who made a nice grab along the back line of the

end zone. Freese’s 39-yard field goal with 61 seconds left in the first half made it 17-3.

The Eagles outgained the Black Bears 229-65 in the first half. Midway into the third, BC safety Jim Noel picked off

Wasilewski’s pass at the Black Bears’ 18. Six plays later, Freese kicked a 20-yard field goal to make it 20-3.

Late in the quarter, Evans backpedaled to handle a long punt, bolted up the middle and raced untouched for the score,

making it 27-3.

The Eagles turned it into a rout when Rettig threw a 32-yard TD strike to Alex Amidon on the play after Manuel

Asprilla picked off a pass. In the opening quarter, BC marched down to Maine’s 14-yard line before Tahj Kimble

fumbled it diving toward the goal line. After a replay review, it was ruled that the ball hit the pylon and rolled into the

end zone, giving the Black Bears the ball on the 20.

Later in the quarter, Maine’s Darlos James recovered Finch’s fumble at the Eagles’ 10. The Black Bears were unable to

punch it into the end zone, though, getting stopped at the 2 before Harvey’s field goal.

It was similar to the final quarter of their opening week loss to Miami when the Eagles fumbled the ball away on their

first two possessions of the fourth.

14 2012 BOSTON COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOTES

EVANSTON, ILL. (AP) - Mike Trumpy ran for 106 yards with a late touchdown, and Northwestern beat Boston College

22-13 on Saturday.

Jeff Budzien tied a school record with five field goals and the Wildcats (3-0) made it three wins over three BCS teams

to start the season even though they did not reach the end zone until the closing minutes.

They downed a punt at the one to pin Boston College (1-2) against the goal line and took over on the Eagles' 44 with

2:35 left in the game after they went three-and-out.

After going three quarters against Vanderbilt the previous week without a TD, Northwestern finally broke through in

this one when Trumpy broke up the middle for a 27-yard scoring run that made it 22-13 with 1:37 remaining.

Before that, Budzien's leg provided all the scoring. Northwestern wasted several big chances, particularly in the early

going, and had to settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. But with their kicker on target, the Wildcats led most of

the way to come out with the win hours after the school announced plans for a new lakefront athletics complex that

will include a facility for football.

Kain Colter threw for 144 yards and ran for 66, while Trevor Siemian threw for 123 yards. Venric Mark ran for 77 yards

but spent the fourth quarter on the sideline limping with an undisclosed lower body injury.

Chase Rettig came up big for Boston College, completing 24 of 44 passes for 291 yards and a touchdown, but the

Eagles fell short.

Budzien's 41-yarder at the end of the second quarter gave the Wildcats a 12-10 lead, but that came right after another

blown chance. A leaping Kyle Prater deflected a wobbly pass from Siemian in the end zone that probably should have

been caught anyway for a 23-yard TD.

Northwestern caught a break after Colter lost a fumble near midfield on its first possession of the third quarter.

Boston College took over at the Wildcats 45 and drove to the 5 before Rolandan Finch got stripped at the line by Brian

Arnfelt, with Chi Chi Ariguzo recovering the ball for Northwestern.

That led to a 19-yarder by Budzien to make it 15-10 late in the third, but again, the field goal came after a missed

opportunity. This time, Colter overthrew a wide open Christian Jones in the end zone on second down at the 6 before

getting stopped on a 4-yard run.

Nate Freese pulled Boston College within two with a 34-yard field goal in the opening seconds of the fourth.
