FREEZE IT!

Junior place kicker Nate Freese connected on all three " eld goal attempts – from distances of 26, 37 and 30 yards, respec-tively – in Boston College’s 41-32 loss to Miami. All three successful attempts came in the second quarter. It marked the sixth time in his career that he has kicked three (or more) " eld goals in a game. Freese, who has matched Boston College's single-game record for " eld goals in a game (4) three times, has now connected on 35-of-44 career " eld goal attempts (80 percent conversion percentage). During the 2012 preseason, Freese combined to connect on 8-of-9 " eld goal attempts in the four scrimmages. Entering 2012, Freese was tied for sixth among all returnees nationally in career " eld goals per game, averaging 1.3 per contest.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL PIONEER HONORED

At halftime of Saturday's season-opening game against Miami, Boston College honored Lou Montgomery of the class of 1941 by retiring his jersey. He was the " rst African-American football player to wear Boston College’s Maroon and Gold. He was an exciting and highly skilled running back and a major o! ensive contributor to the Eagles teams that won 19 of 20 regular-season games in his junior and senior seasons and earned invitations to the 1940 Cotton Bowl and the 1941 Sugar Bowl. Tragically, because of the severe and unjust racial segregation customs of that era, Lou Montgomery was not allowed to participate in either of those post-season games or in regular-season games against teams from the South. Rising above that unspeakable prejudice, Lou Montgomery never compromised his own high principles, his undaunted spirit or his unwavering support of his teammates and fellow Boston College students. His jersey is now permanently displayed on the southeast facade of Alumni Stadium, where is has been added to the commemorative jerseys of Boston College’s top football legends.

DAVENPORT, JAVORSKI EARN SCHOLARSHIPS

Defensive back Ted Davenport and running back Mike Javorski earned full scholarships, it was announced by head coach Frank Spaziani on Wednesday, August 22. Davenport is a 6-foot-2, 209-pound product of Medway, Mass. Javorski is a 5-foot-7, 165-pound product of LaGrande, Ill. and St. Ignatius Prep. Javorski is a biology major and Davenport is a " nance major who served as an orientation leader for the Boston College First-Year Experience program during the summer months of 2012.

CLEARY, NOEL, PANTALE, RAMSEY ELECTED CAPTS.

Seniors Emmett Cleary, Jim Noel, Chris Pantale and Kaleb Ramsey were named captains on August 6 by a vote of their peers. Cleary, a 6-foot-7, 313-pound product of Arlington Heights, Ill., is a two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic team honoree. Noel is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound safety from Everett, Mass., was awarded the program's Jay McGillis Memorial Scholarship in April 2012. Pantale is a 6-foot-6, 255-pound tight end from Wayne, N.J. who has 77 career receptions for 797 yards and " ve touchdowns in the last three seasons. Pantale is expected to miss several weeks after sustaining a foot injury during camp. Ramsey, the 6-foot-3, 302-pound defensive tackle from Uniontown, Pa., was granted a medical hardship waiver following injury in the team's season-opening game against Northwestern last fall.
