Appropriately nicknamed “America’s Sweetheart” by
many in the industry, Quality-Ridge Stormi Hazel continues to win hearts around the globe with her show winning style, her easy-going nature and now her transmitting power. She’s one of many iconic Holsteins that call New England home, and for Clark & Lois Woodmansee and family of Preston, Connecticut, she’s an easy cow to love.
“My first introduction to Hazel was with Bob Fitzsimmons when he bought her for Carrousel Farms in Illinois,” explained Clark. “I saw her that year at Madison and like everyone else, thought she could develop into quite a cow. When Carrousel dispersed, Bob had promoted her to me, but it wasn’t until Howard Binder (who I owned other cattle with) called me the night before the sale and asked if I was interest-ed. Mike Deaver did the bidding and also highly recommended Hazel. Tom Morris, who auction-eered the sale, also became a partner. Hazel went to Mike’s, calved in and showed at Madison that fall looking like the Intermediate Champion that she was eventually named. At that time, we sold 2/3 interest in Hazel to Joe Hoffman and
America’s Sweetheart and more at Woodmansee Farms!
John Cunningham. “In 2008, we decided to put Hazel in the
Global Glamour Sale. Howard and I stayed in on her, and added Peter Vail, Todd Whittier and Cybil Fisher to the partnership. Hazel came back to our farm, and a year later, Todd and Cybil were bought out, leaving just Howard, Peter and myself as owning partners. Hazel spent a year at Rosedale in Wisconsin with Mark Rueth and Nicky Reape, as we did IVF work on her there, and Mark & Nicky eventually calved her in.
“All these great cow people, Cooner & the show crew (and more!) have had a hand in the development of a truly extraordinary cow, and we thank them very much. She makes more friends every year and so do we as a result! Hazel was, in fact, the first cow I ever owned with Peter Vail, and he’s not only become a very good friend, but a partner in many other animals as well.”
Hazel’s accolades continue to mount. The two-time All-American (Jr. 3-Year-Old and 5-Year-Old) was also named All-Canadian (5-Year-Old), and has been nominated All-
American seven times in milking
form, most recently as a
125,000-lb. cow. Scored 2E-96, she
made her best record to date at 5-01 2 365 40,360
4.5 1844 2.9 1204, and has over 191,000M 8000F and
5900P so far. “A tribute to Hazel’s nature is that most of what keeps her in good condi-
tion year after year she does all by herself! Everyone who has worked with her has done an excellent job, but we basically give her a good place to live and a good diet…she
does the rest!”Hazel currently has two sons
By Karen Knutsen
in the St. Jacobs/ABS Judge’s Choice Program – HAVEN *RC (by Advent) and HAWK (by Dundee). She’s also got one milking Goldwyn at Clark & Lois’ (VG-86) and two Atwood bred heifers. In addition, there are six Sid calves to be born this month. Hazel has a VG-87 Goldwyn daughter in Massachusetts and a Goldwyn in Vermont who was just scored 89 points. She’s due back this July to Aftershock, and the indus-try waits in eager anticipation to how the 9-year-old superstar will look this fall!
The Woodmansees have enjoyed the spotlight that Hazel has cast on them, but she’s not the only superstar they’re working with. They also own part-interest in Dubeau Dundee Hezbollah (EX-92), Scientific Gold Dana Rae (EX-92 and housed at Budjon), Cowtown Dundee Sindy (EX-94), Whittier-Farms Tal Lisa (EX-91), Idee Mr Sam Lyzz (EX-92) and several members of the Apple and Pansy families. They also worked with and helped develop the two-time All-American and All-Canadian, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto (EX-95).
The farm is located in southeastern Connecticut, less than 20 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and about three hours from New York City. Despite being in a densely populated area, Clark & Lois still own 300 acres of ground, with an additional 100 acres rented. They are a proud, third-generation dairy, with their son, Clark IV, involved full-time on the farm. They also hired well-known Barrie Potter to work with them and add his legendary cow-care expertise to the mix. The Woodmansees have 115 cows on test (including 20 EX and 50 VG cows) and run a 23,500lb. herd average. Service sires include Fever, Hawk, Jordan, Braxton, Destry, Heztry, Atwood, Explode and a few genomic young sires.
Things haven’t slowed down at all for Clark & Lois, and one could argue that they’ve only gotten busier! Keeping up with America’s Sweetheart, and all the shows, sales and market-ing that goes along with her and her globally known stablemates, is certainly a full-time job. But it’s one they love…almost as much as they love Hazel!

Sustainable. Connected. DELICIOUS!Success of local company boosts interest for both consumers and breedersWhat’s the secret of any suc-
cessful start-up company? Connecting with your customers. And while it might seem to be easier today than ever before because of our attachment to social media out-lets, TRULY connecting to customers in a loyal way is harder than ever. With online shopping, Facebook, Twitter, Wikipedia and more, the amount of information that bombards each of us is staggering. So to start a business, develop a following and be able to expand within a two year time period is really quite extraordinary.
Welcome to Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company (VFCC), a diverse, progressive com-pany celebrating the tradition of a small New England grass-roots idea. “VFCC began as a community effort to save a local farm and its sur-rounding rural landscape in South Woodstock, Vermont,” explained Chief Operating Officer Kent Underwood. “In very short order, the dairy farm has been transformed into an award-winning cheese company that is creating unique farmstead and artisanal cheeses. Currently all milk production at the farm is used for our cheeses.”
The idea for the company started in the fall of 2009 as the existing farm was put up for sale. A group of neighbors who wanted to keep the farm active got together and made a plan to not only save it, but make it a serious contributor to the local community. “With a rigorous planning phase and after analyzing many different models, it was apparent that we needed to produce a value-added product in order to be financially
viable. Specialty cheese was an obvious and pop-ular choice with the investor group (who doesn’t love cheese?) and the numbers worked!”
The herd was assembled in the spring of 2010, including Holsteins, Red & Whites, Jerseys, Brown Swiss and later added Ayrshires. Kent’s personal herd was added, as well as other individuals that he housed for various breeders.
Vermont Farmstead Cheese Company in South Woodstock, Vermont, has been established locally, promoted globally and truly has become
a cornerstone of the state’s revitalized dairy industry.

Today’s Holstein herd boasts a BAA of 108.1% and includes members of the Adeen, Paradise, Spirit Logan, R-Maple Lulu and Dark-Horse M Daphne families, as well as other homebred fami-lies carrying the Gladtime-West prefix. Cows are fed a simple dry-hay based diet supplemented with grain, which Kent says lends to great cow health and consistent quality milk.
Keys to success for VFCC are obviously prod-uct and community involvement. VFCC offers a variety of cheeses including a havarti style, edam style, a farmstead cheddar and a twist on brie. Their cheesemakers have wasted no time in cap-turing public approval and as recently as January 2012, the Governor of Vermont recognized VFCC during his “State of the State” address as “one of several agricultural businesses that are creating jobs and adding vitality to a dairy industry that is poised for revitalization.” VFCC cheeses were also advertised in “The Vermont Country Store 2011 holiday catalog” which is absolutely a treat to look through!
Community involvement is obviously a huge factor in the success of VFCC. Connected to their customers through Facebook, Twitter, a website (http://vermontfarmstead.com/) and a
monthly “Curds and Whey” newsletter, the team reaches not only local customers, but out of state ones as well. Their increased visibility and sales have prompted an expansion phase that will open in June of this year in Windsor, Vermont.
To learn even more about how VFCC con-
nects with its customers and to get an in-depth look at the cows and Kent’s passion for breeding Registered Holsteins, read the rest of the story online at http://www.holsteinworld.com/maga-zines.php. And be sure to check out their ad in this issue on page NE7.

Kent Underwood, a fifth generation dairyman, is the Chief Operating Officer and investor of Vermont Farmstead Cheese. He gets to combine his interest in consumer relations with a herd of
Registered Holsteins boasting a BAA of 108.1%.

A SINCERE THANK YOU - The past 6 months have been a turning point in my life, and for the farm. I want to thank Richard Whitaker, Mike Wilson, Tom Morrell, Rick Allyn, Dave Rama, the Briggs/Bullard families, my family, and everyone else who has supported this great venture. Lastly I thank my two herdsmen, and great friends, Tim & Dan Putnam. I wake up daily feeling grateful to be surrounded by great people who have the same passion as me. I look forward to many success-ful years ahead and look forward to meeting many new people in the venture. Wishing you all the best, George.

We have had investments that looked better on our “balance sheets” but none as valuable as buying these two animals for our kids. They have been more fun than any vacations or material things we could have had. They are part of our family. Thanks to Sue Brown and the crew at Lylehaven for giving Edith a great home and our friends at the Howrigan Farm for caring for Jackpot.

New England Junior Holstein ReportThe New England Holstein
Juniors have had a busy year! In April, the first event of the season was the always popular Cowtown Show Calf Summit hosted by the Vermont Holstein Association and Cowtown Holsteins. Despite a winter storm warning, The Calf Summit drew more than 135 kids to Derby Line, VT. Presenters included Callum McKinven of Quebec, Adam Liddle of New York, Rick Allyn of Connecticut, Bob Fitzsimmons of Vermont, and many other industry greats. Workshop topics included show-manship, nutrition, clipping, calf selection, and animal health.
With temperatures in the 90s for most of the week, the New England Juniors certainly expe-rienced warm southern hospitality at the 2011 National Holstein Convention in Richmond, VA in June. Twelve members from four differ-ent states represented the region by competing in Dairy Bowl, Dairy Jeopardy, Public Speaking, and the Banner Contest. Kim Kubosiak (MA) and Heath Page (NH) both competed in the intermediate division of Dairy Jeopardy. Kirsten Beaudry (NH) won the Senior Division of the Public Speaking Contest with a speech address-ing the health benefits of chocolate milk while Maddie Beaudry (NH) competed in the Junior Division of the contest with a speech discuss-ing heat stress in cattle. The Junior Dairy Bowl Team advanced to the third round of national competition. Its team members consisted of Maddie Beaudry (NH), Maggie Kirby (VT), Lottie Page (NH), and Matt Fletcher (MA). The Senior Dairy Bowl Team included Aryn Martin
(ME), Kirsten Beaudry (NH), Jared Birch (VT), and Jasper Page (NH). Together, the senior team members advanced to the fourth round of com-petition before losing a close game. However, the Senior Team’s captain, Kirsten Beaudry was rewarded for her diligent studying by earning the third highest quiz score in the senior division. Aside from the competition, the New England Juniors enjoyed tours of Richmond-area farms, the National Sale, a performance from an Improv Comedy group, as well as ice skating, laser tag, and arcade games at the “Junior Farewell”. For the first time in many years, New England had a ‘state’ banner that was created by Kirsten Beaudry and featured squares from each of the New England States.
While hundreds of New England junior members exhibited at their respective state shows throughout the months of July and August, a smaller group of members exhibited their animals at the regional level during the New England Fall Showcase at the Eastern States Exposition in September. The Junior Champion was shown by Max Wolf (CT), while both Senior & Grand Champion honors went to Elizabeth Hill (VT).
In October, the juniors joined together once again for the New England Holstein Convention in Stowe, VT. The weekend began with tours to Lylehaven and Fairmont farms, then the group returned to the Stoweflake Resort for an eve-ning of junior competitions. Maggie Kirby (VT) and Kirsten Beaudry (NH) achieved the top written exam scores in their respective divisions while
Maddie and Kirsten Beaudry (NH) earned the highest individual scores during the dairy bowl competition and earned a position on their respective teams. The Junior Dairy Bowl Team representing New England at the 2012 National Holstein Convention is as follows: Maddie Beaudry (NH), Maggie Kirby (VT), Lottie Page (NH), and Isabel Hall (VT). Members of the Senior Dairy Bowl Team include Kirsten Beaudry (NH), Matt Fletcher (VT), Sarah Brochu (VT), and Heath Page (NH). Jared Birch (VT) will represent New England as the Senior Dairy Bowl Contestant. Kirsten Beaudry (NH) was also named the New England Distinguished Junior Member and received the John Atwood Award. During the business meeting, the New England Association elected new officers and they are as follows: President- Aryn Martin (ME), Vice President- Kirsten Beaudry (NH), Secretary- Brittany Moon (ME), and Treasurer- Lottie Page (NH). During the meeting, the group discussed several new ideas for the coming year and the officers are already organizing a busy calendar. Some 2012 events to look forward to include the Massachusetts Blue Ribbon Calf Sale in March, the annual Cowtown Show Calf Summit in April, the National Holstein Convention in June, the New England Holstein Convention in July, the various state shows in August, and the New England Fall Showcase in September.

My mom and dad returned from Canada one day 10 years ago
with a beautiful black heifer calf. They had seen her at a show where she was the 5th place winter calf, and caught their eye, and with the help of our good friend Jocelyn Cote, we purchased this all black Juror out of an EX Stardust. She became my first Holstein, and con-tinues to provide me with healthy heifer calves. Her name is Buroco Juror Edith. Over the years, I have been able to form an unexplainable bond with her. By no means would I consider her a natural show cow, I had to use all my might as a little 7 year old to hold her head up, and she enjoyed making me struggle! But even-tually I grew strong enough to over come this and she leads perfectly for me, and only me. No one else seemed to be able to get her to cooper-ate. This special bond has never waivered. When I was younger, I would go to the barn and talk to her; and she would listen. I have fond memories of falling asleep next to her at shows, and her following me through the pasture, when she would run from other people. One of the scariest moments I can remember is when we were flush-ing her and she developed a blood clot in her spine. She lost movement in her rear legs, and we were unsure if she was going to live. For several days she couldn’t get up. I remember visiting her and seeing her eyes brighten and ears perk up when she heard my voice. I begged her to keep moving and eating, and with acupuncture, some herbal tea, and the incredible care of Sue Brown, she amazed us all. Against all odds she survived and is back to her old self.
Luckily, Edith has been very successful at shows. We usually sell most of our heifers before they calve, but Edith was an exception. She was Res. Junior Champion in Louisville as a winter yearling, Grand Champion of the Junior Show at Eastern States as a Sr. 2, 4-year-old, and aged cow. She was also HHM Jr. All-American Winter
Life Lessons from Edith!Yearling, and nominated Jr. All-American as a Sr. 3-year-old and 4-year-old.
Edith is currently scored EX-94 3E and will come back out for the shows this fall. Her first daughter followed her lead and was Res. Jr. All-American and nominated All-American as a winter yearling, Res. Jr. All-American Sr. 2-year-old and Best Bred and Owned at the National
Junior Show in Harrisburg as a Sr. 2-year-old, and scored EX-92. Other Edith daughters, Damion Eclipse (VG-87), Titan Elephant and Durham Eternity (VG-85), have also been nomi-nated Jr. All-American.
This past year, Edith’s great-
granddaughter, Pyramid Lucifer Eeyor was 2nd summer yearling in the Junior Show at World Dairy Expo and Res. Jr. All-American. We have flushed her very successfully, now having 10 ET heifers out of her. I have begun to struggle with thinking of names that start with E! We have bred her to Astronomical, Damion, Dundee, Destry, Durham, and the calves have been just as black and stunning as she is. She is currently living happily in a boxstall as a spoiled old cow at Lylehaven Farms in East Montpelier. She looks just as good as always after calving in December with an adorable Destry heifer, her 6th calf. Edith loves to go to the shows and my favorite times to be with her are at the shows.
Working with Edith and all the experiences I have shared with her have provided me with valuable knowledge. Being my first animal, she has been the inspiration for my passion of ani-mals. This passion has inspired me to wish to be a large animal vet, and I am entering college with that ambition. Also, attending shows has giving me the opportunity to see some amazing cows, such as Missy, Apple, Hazel, and Veronica. The amount of time I have spent at shows with her, I have learned how to judge cows and pick out quality animals. When I’m looking for cows
By Chelsea Abbott, special for HolsteinWorld
I like, I have to admit I typically lean towards those that are mostly black, probably because of the influence Edith has had on me. She is a once in a lifetime cow!

28 March 2012 NEW ENGLAND HOLSTEIN ANNUAL • HOLSTEINWORLD www.holsteinworld.com
Seventeen year old George Liberty isn’t backing down from
the task at hand. It’s not in his vocabulary to shy away from a challenge. Instead, he’s using his youthful open mind, his wide array of men-tors and his years of family business training to take the reins of Juniper Holsteins and continue a long-standing New England tradition.
Juniper has been in the Liberty family since 1983, when George’s father, Michael, purchased the facility in Gray, Maine. Michael worked with his friend Mike Wilson (of Wilsondale) to buy cows and build a herd with the goal of develop-ing a “world-class milking facility and embryo transfer/breeding facility,” according to George. In its heyday, Juniper was a major player, work-ing with cattle valued in the millions of dollars range and exporting thousands of embryos worldwide. One of the most well-known bulls to be produced during this time was Juniper Rotate Jed, who was purchased and distributed by Landmark (Alta) Genetics. The tax reform act that significantly impacted most investor herds in the 80s also changed the makeup of Juniper and because investing in cows didn’t quite carry the tax benefits that it had before, Juniper was sized down and eventually the herd was dispersed in 1991. Remaining vacant for much of the 90s, Juniper reopened its doors in 1999 when Michael Liberty partnered up with another friend, Dr. Richard “Whit” Whitaker. Whit managed the dairy, along with his successful embryo transfer practice, until 2009. And that’s when the doors opened for George.
Although just 14 years of age, George had been surrounded by business-saavy family mem-bers his whole life, so taking over a dairy wasn’t daunting to the then 14-year-old. “I expressed a keen interest to dad showing that I wanted to learn the business and take over this great place. August 16, 2011 was the arrival of the first of our
Look Who’s Back!Juniper – The Sequel
new foundation herd, and a dream come true!”Mind you, George doesn’t come from a family
of “just getting by” people. His father was nomi-nated in 1985 by President Ronald Regan as one of the “Most Outstanding Men in America,” and he’s been involved with industries besides agri-culture including aerospace & defense, aviation, real estate, energy, education and more. George’s mother is in charge of all the bookwork for the farm. Adriana, a sister, has worked as a volun-teer with “Projects Abroad” educating children in an orphanage in Ehtiopia. She’s currently in college and still very much involved in charity work and with the Liberty Family Foundation. George’s 15-year-old brother, Max, is investing in a record-label in Los Angeles, and follows his father’s interest in the entertainment industry. The list goes on, but you can see that personal drive and motivation is bred right in. And in return, the entire family is happy to have cows back in the barns and is very supportive of the rejuvenation of Juniper.
Besides family influence, George credits men-tors like Whit and Mike Wilson for teaching him so much. “They both have tremendous knowledge and experience with cows and the business. I realized when I wanted to take over
By Karen Knutsen
HOLSTEINWORLD
the process would be tough…but easier with great help. I hope college helps me learn a lot more, but I have a feeling I won’t learn nearly as much as I have from these guys in real life!” George says he also gets inspiration from watch-ing other breeders develop great herds of influen-tial cows and industry leading show strings. He said he admires what breeders like Sandy Valley and Butlerview have done and hopes that in five years, Juniper is working towards developing those same types of cows. He doesn’t want to put all his eggs in one basket though, and agrees that developing genomic leaders and show cows is tough, but diversity is good.
On the 130-acre farm today, you’ll find a herd of 40 cows, with 34 in tiestalls and the remain-ing six elite cows in boxstalls. The herd is fed 50 pounds of corn silage daily, an 18% pellet and a dry grass hay. There’s also a heifer facil-ity that houses 30 heifers & calves, as well as hutches which will soon be full after many calve in March. “The goal is to have leading genetics that create the basis for nationwide relationships,” said George. “We breed for type, dairyness and big, deep-bodied cows. We play the genomic game a little with the small group we have, but for the most part, we go for the big-pedigreed,
elite animals.”George gives lots of credit to his herds-
men, Tim and Dan Putnam. “The two are brothers and work together superbly. They have grown-up in the business and both have worked for top, top people nationwide. To be able to walk in everyday and have a great time with not just employees, but people you can call friends, is an unparal-leled feeling. The cows look ready to hit the showring and everyone is happy and comfortable.” George says that was one of the hardest things about “coming back” to the industry, was finding good help. But “to find two people who have the same desire
as our family does and who could make the place thrive is fantastic. We have expectations that are simple, but important.”
Get to know George even better by following the continuing story online at http://www.holstein-world.com/magazines.php. And be sure to check out the Juniper Holsteins ad in this issue on page 11 in the New England Annual!
