Thanks to the efforts of our volunteers and sponsors, we expect this 20th Show ‘n’ Shine to be our best ever. There’s excitement with the “Damn Yankee” Nostalgia Funny Car making an appearance, as well as an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars and exotics… definitely something for everyone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show. Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember. New this year will be our “mini cruise” to show off our great city. We’ll start from the A&W in Discovery Harbour Shopping Centre and head south on the Island Highway. A right on to Erickson will take us to Nelson and Penfield, then north on Alder to Oceanview. This leads us to Ash and Carnegie, then down South Murphy to 1st Ave, up to Alder and north back to Downtown. Set up your lawn chairs on this route and watch the cars cruise by.I can’t say enough about the generous support we’ve received from the local business community. Because it’s our 20th, we decided to increase our usual 10 “Top Picks” to 20. This meant finding 10 new trophy sponsors… it turned out to be an easy job. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given to participants. Special thanks to Tyee Plaza for their “Cruizin’ Crazy” promotion, which include the “Impalas” show band at Spirit Square during our event. Room for parking

all these neat machines is courtesy Tyee Plaza, City of Campbell River (for Shopper’s Row) and Spirit Square.The North Island Cruisers is a car club made up of car enthusiasts from all walks of life… the hobby connects us all. For some it’s the fun of building, others it’s proudly showing, and maybe just the fun of cruising around in a neat vehicle. We invite new members; just bring your passion for cars! The club officially became a “not for profit society” in 1992. The original directors from the incorporation documents were Mike Vroom, Tom Askey, Larry Clayton, John Uzzell and Ben Lindhout. Each year we support local charities and actively promote the car hobby. It’s safe to say that this event has contributed over $25,000 to local charities over the years. – Jim Johnson

Message from the Chair of the car show committee

Jim & his wife Patti moved to Campbell River seven years ago from Alberta to be close to the grandkids. They love the area and brought along their ’40 Ford (pictured), ’84 Corvette, and the ’37 Ford they dated in way back in the early ’60s. Jim is Chair of this year’s Car Show Committee and Past President of the North Island Cruisers.

I have been hot rodding and building cars for most of my life. I am an avid drag racer (currently racing a 55 Chev) high 8 second car. I also drive my 1937 Chevrolet coupe when time and weather permit.

Two years ago, Randy Carlson, one of our long time members, suggested “instead of buying trophies… why don’t we make them.” He explained that he had an idea and would bring a sample to our next meeting. Randy used a damaged race car piston & rod and mounted it on a wood base… it was a piece of art! We agreed to have him build these unique trophies. He did a fantastic job. They were the hit of our 2010 & 2011 Show ‘n’ Shines! With time pressures and a tough work schedule Randy asked if someone else could help with this year’s trophies. We are lucky to have some very talented and committed members. Ralph Beaumont accepted the challenge. We had a bit of a surprise for him though. Being our 20th event, we decided to have 20 “Top Picks” instead of 10, as in the former years. He dug in and with 8 Flathead Ford pistons that Ralph had, and a

donation of 12 Lincoln V12 pistons from one of Pete Cowling’s customers, he had the foundation for this year’s “Top Pick” trophies. But this wasn’t all that

Ralph had in mind. He created our “Hard Luck” trophy from some damaged connecting rods, a marine compass for the “Long Distance” trophy, a set of handcuffs welded to a giant exhaust valve for our “RCMP Pick” trophy, and he also created a “Hard Luck” keeper trophy for the club out of a damaged 4-71 supercharger from a Bonneville race car. Andy Schwanicke supplied the

exotic wood for the bases. These are real collectors’ items and we look forward to presenting them to the lucky participants. Thanks to Ralph for his hard work & talent, Randy for his great idea, hard work & talent, and to everyone who contributed to these unique trophies.

A work in progressThe car pictured is a ‘69 Camaro half way through a major restoration. Many cars of the muscle era were "unibody" cars – they did not have full frames, only subframes and rear differentials attached to the unibody. In a restoration of a unibody car, there is no frame to separate the body. Therefore the front subframe and the rear differential are removed,

along with all glass, body panels, etc. The body is then mounted on a rotisserie, which is what you see pictured. Kinda like cooking a roast on a BBQ but much larger. The body can then be rotated and any part can be worked on with the turn of the machine.The ‘69 Camaro has been reproduced as a completely new body shell recently (not this one, it’s original) so the aftermarket provides a myriad of parts and accessories to build it the way you like and for many different uses. This car has continuously evolved over the last 10 years as trends change and more

modern parts are made available. As an example, the engine has been through a few changes internally and the latest change has seen the induction system switched from carburetor to fuel injection. All that remains of the original car is the subframe and body shell. The transmission is an early 90s 4-speed overdrive and differential is from a ‘75 Buick Apollo. The interior is all new but as original. The more recent pictures show the undercarriage and running gear installed.I purchased the car from a co-worker eleven years ago. I know that’s a long time ago but I didn’t have 30 guys working on it for a week like you see in the TV shows. Ya, ya I know it still shouldn’t have taken this long. All of the work with the exception of engine machining and upholstery was done in my garage at home. As this is being written it is finally ready for paint and with a little luck it may just be ready for this show!– Stan Cook

The car is an original "Damn Yankee" built in 1977 by Frame Up Engineering and was built as an AA/FC running in the 6.30s at over 240 mph. Brent bought the rolling chassis 1993, sold the body to a restaurant and replaced it with a 23T body. In 2009 he managed to track the body down in California, bought it back and restored it and then mated it up with the original chassis again. The best time to date with his blown alcohol combination is 6.61 @ 205 mph racing in the BB/FC Assoc. out of the Northwest U.S. and B.C.

He drove his own blown alcohol hydro the "Waterworks" with a best of 7.54 @ 156 mph. until 1991 when he attended Frank Hawley's Drag Racing School to learn how to drive funnycars from the two time champion. He currently owns and drives the "Damn Yankee" funnycar, and the "Thriller IV" blown alcohol dragster for his parents with a best of 6.14 @ 230 mph. and fills in when needed to drive a Top Alcohol dragster out of Chilliwack with a best time of 5.43 @ 263 mph.

Brent Murray’s “Damn Yankee” Nostalgia Blown Alcohol funny car is a feature car at our show. This car runs 6 second ETs at over 200 mph in the quarter mile.
