22nd ANNUAL SHOW ’n’ SHINE

www.nicruisers.ca

It’s our 23rd Annual “Show ‘n’ Shine”. We have a great day planned for the participants and spectators alike. . We expect many new entries… an incredible line up of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, race cars, sports cars, exotics and motorcycles… definitely something for everyone. Campbell River has an abundance of really cool cars, and often the only time we really get to see them is at this show. Couple this with the participants who travel from far and wide to show there beautiful pieces of rolling art while experiencing our awesome scenery, and you have a weekend to remember.

We really want to encourage the younger crowd to participate, so a special “Young Guns” trophy will be awarded to an entry owned by someone under 30 years of age.

Our Saturday evening cruise is on again, but starts at 6:30pm this year. See the details in this pullout. Set up your lawn chairs and watch the cars cruise by. Our participants love to cruise and it gives us a chance to show off our great city to our visitors.

Once again we had generous support from the local business community. The Downtown BIA has organized a shopping tour for our participants. Campbell River businesses also donate “door prizes” that are given

to participants. Room for parking all these neat machines is courtesy the City of Campbell River, for Shopper’s Row and Spirit Square, and Tyee Plaza for their parking area.

Our “Top Pick” trophies are award to the “picks” of the sponsors, our members, and we even have a “RCMP Pick”. We don’t judge… we just pick cars we see as special in one way or another. We appreciate every entrant and “Thank You” for participating.

Note: Our club member cars are not eligible for trophies but will be on display.

• Trophies!!! 10 Top Picks, Hard Luck, Long Distance, RCMP Pick, Club Participation, John Uzzell Memorial for best 30’s Chevy, Young Guns Pick.

• Bounce-A-Rama for the kids!

• Great Food – The Jalapeño Grill, Mini Donuts, plus Rotary Burgers & Dogs

The North Island Cruisers is a car club made up of car enthusiasts from all walks of life… the hobby connects us all. For some it’s the fun of building, others it’s proudly showing, and maybe just the fun of cruising around in a neat vehicle. We invite new members; just bring your passion for cars! The club officially

became a “not for profit society” in 1992. Each year we support local charities and actively promote the car hobby. It’s safe to say that this event has contributed thousands of dollars to local charities over the years.

We welcome new members. More information at www.nicruisers.ca

A Family Legacy

Our 66 Beaumont was purchased by my mother in law brand new from Empress Motors in Victoria and then was purchased from her by Carolyn and became our daily driver for a for a few years . The car did make a couple trips to Disneyland before I started a frame off restoration back in 2001 . The car is completely restored to original

with some extra factory options . We do take the car to different show and shines on the island and to our NIC show and shine Labour day Sunday on shoppers row . The car does not like rain so it stays home when the raindrops appear,

Done Right, the First Time.

Thank you to all participants, vendors, the visiting public and members of the North Island Cruisers for your support of our Annual Labour Day car show in Campbell River.

Our ‘Cruisers’ have organized this show for the last 23 years and the event has become a highlight of our year. The Car Show has grown to one of the largest on the Island and two years ago we added a Saturday night cruise through town. This year we drive back to the Discovery Mall A&W where we follow up with a street dance and live entertainment.

In 1992 the original 5 members incorporated a ‘not for profit society’ and these are the purposes of our society as defined in our Constitution:

To promote and encourage the restoration, modification and upgrading of motor vehicles with a primary focus on vehicles thirty (30) years old or older, but also including sports cars, muscle cars, race cars, exotics and special interest vehicles.

To share knowledge of the members of the Society on the area of  restoring, modifying and upgrading of motor vehicles.

To hold meetings and arrange for social events, competitions and rod runs for its members and others sharing the same interests.

To arrange for insurance, periodicals and publicity for the benefit of its members and to promote motor vehicle safety and courtesy and foster public  understanding of its objectives.

As you can see we appeal to a large section of the public who are interested in many aspects of special interest autos. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Seniors Centre in Campbell River Common mall at 7:00 PM. You might also find us at the A&W at Merecroft Mall most weekday mornings. We also publish a Website (www.nicruisers.ca) where you can contact us and find out more about us.

You will not meet a finer group of people who are eager to help fellow members with their projects and their enjoyment of their special interest cars.

Enjoy the Show n Shine and our Saturday night cruise and join our North Island Cruisers – you will have fun!

1980 Chevrolet Corvette coupe with a 350 CI L81 V8 motor and automatic transmission. It is a original all stock survivor car. Its nicely equipped with power steering, brakes, and windows, air conditioning, and Gymkhana suspension. I have had the car four years and got from a fellow who owned it for 27 years. The car spent its life in a garage and only driven during the summer months. It’s a ton of fun to drive and I show it at car shows, also take it to car club events, and especially enjoy touring. Beautiful Survivor! 75th Anniversary of the1940 Ford

2015 is the 75th Anniversary of the ’40 Ford. The ’40 has been called one of Henry Ford’s mostbeautiful designs ever, and ranks up there with the ‘32 Ford as a very popular base for a Hot Rod.

Since Jim & Patti Johnson moved to Campbell River ten years ago, their ’40 Ford Deluxe Tudorhas been seen on the streets regularly every summer. The car is a great daily driver. Jim is oftenasked if it’s all original, since the body is completely original, but modern components lurk underthat 1940 look.

Well, maybe not that modern… the stock chassis has been upgraded withindependent suspension using the popular Mustang II design up front, with C2 Corvette supplying the independent rear, including power disc brakes all around. The engine is a 1965 425 cubic inch “Nailhead Buick” coupled to a ST400 transmission.

It also has power steering, so it drives and rides much like a new car. The interior is completely redone with a traditional look, but includes Volvo bucket seats, air-conditioning and a modern stereo.

In 1989 the car received a temporary paint job so it could take part to the 50th Anniversary celebrations, and that temporary paint job served it

well until 2014 when Jim decided the ’40 deserved a facelift. With the help of fellow club members and painter Dan LeBlanc a new coat of 1940 Ford Mandarin Maroon was applied in E&B Helicopter’s paint booth.

With regular maintenance and upgrading Jim expects the ’40 to make it to the ’40 Ford’s 100th anniversary.

NORTH ISLAND CRUISERS SHOW 'N' SHINE CAMPBELL RIVER 2015

Berry & Vale Contracting Ltd3815 Discovery Drive 250-286-3505

John Davis has a thing for 1936 Fords, and after taking a look at the ve window coupe in today’s column, I completely understand the attraction.

In 1962, Davis was 18 and working at Burger’s B&A in Ladysmith when he purchased a 1936 two-door sedan for $100.

He eventually sold that car for $150, but as any gearhead knows your rst car tends to stick in your memory and haunt your dreams long after it’s gone.

Davis owned a string of other hot rod or custom Fords over the years, including a 1940 Ford and a few Model A Fords.

The last Model A he purchased was sold before it was nished so Davis could concentrate on raising a family and building his business.

But in the spring of 1991, Davis started thinking it was time he picked up another project.

A classi ed ad in a Vancouver newspaper led him to the car you see in today’s feature.

It was a “not quite stock” 1936 Ford 5-window coupe with a rumble seat and a athead V8. Mechanically, the car still had stock suspension and a stock three-speed transmission, which was hooked up to a 1940

Flathead V8.

The car was in Victoria and its owner, Les Crombie, was still somewhat attached to the car after almost 20 years of ownership.

Davis didn’t mind making the trip down island, but he would come back to Campbell River empty handed. It was sitting in a car port, full of leaves and it wasn’t running” says Davis of the 57-year-old Ford. “The guy wanted $6,000 and I thought it was too much money.”

Apparently Crombie thought so too.

“He called me two weeks later and asked me what I could afford to pay,” says Davis. “There was another few weeks of dickering back and forth but I ended up paying $4,000.”

Davis nally had the 1936 Ford he had wanted for almost 40 years and by the summer of ‘91 he had it running.

With the help Russ Schoenfelder, who performed the body work, painted the car in PPG Black and reassembled the car, Davis ended up with a show-winning street rod.

Davis says he built the car without compromise and you can tell by the coupe’s interior..

Davis’ wife, Darlane, chose red

leather for the interior and carpet which was installed by Dave Tabish at Cass A Interior in Campbell River. The ‘used sparingly” rumble seat is upholstered in the same red leather as the front seatsans door panels. Classic Instruments gauges take the place of stock units and, keeping with the no compromises theme, the outer rim of all six gauges received the 14-carat gold treatment.

The mirror-like PPG black paint is complimented by subtle but slick red pinstriping courtesy of Abby Aspen of Chemainus.

The bumpers are polished stainless

steel units (stock are chrome) while the stock sideview mirrors remain.

The car was back on the road in 1997 and it made a big impression in its rst outing – winning Best in Show at the Qualicum Beach Father’s Day Show ‘N Shine.

“It was sort of a dream car.” says Davis of the restoration.

“Kind of a once in a lifetime thing.”

One thing is for sure, in my relatively short lifetime, I’ve seldom seen such a ne, well thought out and put together street rod.

FROM THE GROUND UPThis 1969 Camaro was purchased from a co-worker 12 years ago. The pictures show the transformation from a well worn white car to what it is now a nished (almost) vehicle. It was stripped inside and out to bare

metal then placed on a rotisserie to better access all sides of the car. The car was relatively rust free which is unusual for a 30 plus year

old car. The only panel replaced was the door skin which wasn’t rusty but worn thin from previous body work. It was then

coated with more modern products like epoxy primers then worked out from there.

While the body remains in stock form the running gear was extensively modi ed. The engine has most of the internals replaced with tougher parts. The valve train is completely rollerized then the short block is topped off with

aluminum heads, AIR-Gap intake, and the carburetor has been replaced with

F.A.S.T. fuel injection. The accessory drive kit is a late model GM serpentine system.

MSD ignition puts things in to motion. The transmission is a 700R4 overdrive unit and the later

model 8.5” corporate rear end contains 3.42 gears, Auburn posi. and Moser axles. The car rides on 17” Foose Legend wheels and Nitto 555 tires.

The whole interior was covered with a sound deadener (Dynamat). The interior is all new, original black carpet, upholstery and headliner. Auto Meter gauges are tted to the stock console and the shifter adapted to control the 4 speed automatic. Music is supplied through a Custom Auto Sound 630NA unit and Kenwood speakers. The body work and initial prep was done at home. Special thanks to Henry and #1 Autobody for the nal blocking and application of the water borne 2012 GM “Ashen Grey” paint and clear coat.

Plans for this Winter include installation of new front bolstered seat foams with stock appearing covers and 4 wheel Wilwood disc brakes.

My thanks to Alex McIntosh Photography for photos of the nished car.
