Nancy Warner led Red Devils back to title game By KYLE GOON The Salt Lake Tribune
Halfway through the season, Springville wasn't making anyone forget about Lexi Eaton.
A year after the spectacular star graduated, the Red Devils were mired in mediocrity with a 4-8 record and playoff hopes quickly slipping through their fingers.
Coach Nancy Warner told them a cold, hard truth: If you lose this next game, you will not go to state.
"It was when we were like,
COACH OF T H E YEAR » NANCY WARNER, S P R I N G V I L L E
'We need to take this seriously' " senior forward Aliza All-red said. "Coach Warner would lay it all out for us and tell us what we needed to do to win. It was kind of our decision whether or not to do it, and we started to do what we had to."
It's counterintuitive to recognize Warner's first season without a championship in three years as one of her best coaching performances.
However, very few coaches could have led that 4-8 team to the finals.
But sure enough, come February, Springville was once again in the 4A title game. And although the Red Devils did not win, it was an achievement to even get there.
"It was basically an all-new group playing together for the first time — a lot of the girls hadn't even practiced with the
varsity team last year," Warner said. "We had to take it a day at a time, and make a lot of changes. And it finally started to click."
A new star was undoubtedly a critical component to that success. Junior Malia Nawahine, who moved to Springville from San Diego, Calif., became one of the most consistent scorers and rebound-ers in the state.
S a v a n n a h Park , Han nah Packard and Allred also stepped up. Springville tore through the second half of
region play on a 7-2 streak leading into the playoffs.
In the tournament, Springville knocked off top-ranked Cyprus, followed by Sky View and Mountain Crest. It came up a bit short against Timpanogos, but the players will remember it fondly.
"I love this team more than any other this year, because we were such a team and everyone wrote us off," Allred said. "I think it was hard and frustrating for Nancy because she's won a lot and hates losing, but she took it in stride."
