Beautiful, hard-working immigrant wasn’t afraid to kick dealers off her store’s corner Friends, neighbors believe she paid ultimate sacrifice Police believe it wasn’t random

The execution-style shootingdeath of a North Philadelphiacorner store employee was de-scribed by a neighbors as a hiton a woman who didn’t bendto drug dealers.

Reyna Aguirre-Alonso, whopolice identified as RosemaryFernandez-Rivera, 33, wasshot four times by a manwearing a ski mask inside ElCaribe Grocery at 3300 MutterSt., detectives said.

The shooter wordlesslypassed two other employeesand did not announce a rob-bery before opening fire at7:48 p.m. The motive for thekilling is unknown, policesaid.

But Greg Bucceroni ofCrime Victim Services, whoseoffice is less than a block awayfrom the store where the mur-der occurred, believes the in-tent of the shooting was clear:to send a message against po-lice cooperation. Bucceronisaid his organization reachedout to neighbors, includingRivera, to participate in vio-lence reduction efforts.

Rivera agreed, calling 911on criminals hanging in frontof the grocery and warningthem to find another spot.“She was fed up with illegaldrug transactions and dealershanging out in front of thestore,” Bucceroni said. “It wasimpacting her business — cus-tomers were not coming in be-cause they were afraid to walkpast the drug dealers.

He believes she was target-

ed because of her efforts todrive the dealers away. “Be-cause she got involved, shewas murdered,” Bucceronisaid. “There’s so much drugand gang activity here that theresidents are overwhelmed.Law abiding citizens arehostages of urban terrorists.”

Bucceroni said that, sincethe young woman's murder,he's already received about 75phone calls from frightenedcommunity members whowant nothing to do with theanti-violence campaign oreven community cleanups.

“Neighbors are scared, realscared,” he said. “Every timethey call the police for somereason, even Homicide, theycome to their house. It putsthe ones who cooperate athigh risk.”

Agassi serves up a winfor city school students

Agassi, rear, celebrated a new elementary school with children in North Philadelphia yesterday. His foundation bought an old factory, then leased it to a charter school provider.

A group of excited, young stu-dents got to show off theirnew school yesterday to May-or Michael Nutter and a na-tional celebrity.

KIPP, a national charterschool provider, had a ribbon-cutting for the opening of itsfirst elementary school in thecity. The school leases a formerfactory in Allegheny which waspurchased and renovated by anorganization co-founded bytennis legend Andre Agassi.

The partnership is the firstof what Agassi and KIPP offi-cials hope will be severalschools in low-income neigh-borhoods across the country.

“I’m a ninth-grade dropout.I was fortunate to have tennisto fall back on,” Agassi told theaudience, describing what ledhim to start the Canyon-Agassi

Charter School Facilities Fund.“I said ‘What about those kidswho don’t have tennis to fallback on? Where do they endup?’ And unfortunately we allknow that too well.”

The school opened in Au-gust 2010, but just moved intothe new facility last Augustand construction was finallyfinished last month. It has 150students in K-2, with plans toexpand to fourth grade by2014. Parents say the school isa godsend.

“I’m grateful to have thisschool here,” said Brock NelsonSr., who has twins in the firstgrade. Nelson, a school teacher, said he appreciates KIPP’s mod-el of preparing each studentfor college. “Just the structure, the time they have with them,I appreciate that.”

Under a compact recentlysigned between the city, thePhiladelphia School Districtand charter school groups, thecity hopes to replicate the high-est-performing schools andclose poor-performing schools.

Nutter lauded KIPP officialsfor their record. “[The stu-dents] have to understand theopportunity to achieve is rightthere before them,” he said.

IMF cuts growthforecast, warns ofglobal recessionWASHINGTON. The IMFchopped its estimate for2012 global growth to 3.3percent from 4 percent justthree months ago andwarned it could drop as lowas 1.3 percent if Europe letsthe crisis fester for muchlonger. For 2013, it predict-ed growth of 3.9 percent.

“The epicenter of thedanger is Europe, but the

News in briefObama bids for secondterm in his SOTU speechPresident Barack Obamapitched new initiatives on jobs, taxes and housing in an elec-tion-year State of the Union ad-dress, making a sweeping casefor a second term despite theslow U.S. economic recoveryand high jobless rate.

Framed in what was labeleda starkly populist speech, mostof Obama’s proposals will facestiff Republican resistance, limiting the chance of head-way in a divided Congress be-fore the Nov. 6 general elec-tion.

But the White House hopesObama can gain enough trac-tion with voters to help re-store faith in his economicleadership as the Democraticpresident defends himselfagainst escalating attacks byRepublican candidates vyingto face him.

Obama pushed tax breaksfor bringing manufacturing

jobs home from overseas, ideas to help the troubledhome-mortgage market andincentives for alternative en-ergy development.

“It’s time to apply the samerules from top to bottom: Nobailouts, no handouts and nocopouts,” an early speech tran-script said.

He also called again forhigher taxes on the wealthy —despite consistent Republicanopposition — and for furtherpressure on China over its cur-rency and trade practices.

While these initiatives donot offer a quick fix for highunemployment that threatensObama’s re-election prospects, his speech will be a chance toturn up the heat on an unpop-ular Congress and take controlof the campaign narrative.

2THEWORDMetro’s Dorothy Robinson shares her take on the world of gossip @dorothyatmetro [email protected]

Here’s the thing about“The Bachelor” and“The Bachelorette”: Ifyou want to put your-

self in a ridiculous situationby vying for the “love” ofsome stranger while a groupof other similarly dressed peo-ple do the same on national TV,that’s fine. You are a (semi-) ra-tional adult and that’s yourweird bag. However, it’s whenkids are involved that I getthe heebie-jeebies.

It was announced yesterdaythat Emily Maynard, the 25-year-old single mom who was

the chosen one on “The Bache-lor” with Brad Womack, butthen broke up with him shortlythereafter, will now be the starof the eighth season of “TheBachelorette.” Although thereis no word on what kind of roleMaynard’s 6-year-old daughterwill play in the series, the ABCpress releases are quick topoint out that Maynard is thefirst single mom to star in theseries. Maynard’s little girl alsoappeared on “The Bachelor.”

Look. It’s great that singlemoms can be on “The Bache-lorette.” In fact, the series

needs to broaden their castingnet — more single moms! Moresingle dads! How about singlegranddads?! Heck, what about acontestant who isn’t white? Butisn’t it confusing enough for lit-tle children when their parentsdate multiple people/make outhalf-dressed in hot tubs with-out being on network TV?Here’s hoping ABC won’t show-boat the little girl for ratings, like they did with single dad Ja-son Mesnick’s 4-year-old son Tyon “The Bachelor.”

Let’s leave that poor parent-ing to “Teen Mom,” shall we?

Seal speaks out about divorceNews of Heidi Klum and Seal’sseparation has come as asurprise to Hollywood — and toSeal himself. But the Britishsinger is putting on a braveface, insisting their split won’tget ugly. “We’re just not thosekind of people — we never real-ly have been,” he says in an in-terview with PBS talk show hostTavis Smiley. “We’ve neverbeen attracted to that. Ofcourse it’s a difficult situationthat we have to handle rightnow and it’s never easy. Interms of our love and respectfor each other, that hasn’tchanged at all.”

Will Aniston be astay-at-home mom?Jennifer Aniston doesn’t haveany new acting gigs lined up,

and sources say that’s just howshe likes it, according to theDaily Mail. “She wants to focuson herself and hopefullybecoming a mother,” a sourcesays. “She is thinking of launch-ing her own fashion line whichwould allow her to spend moretime at home.” The source addsthat Aniston has not scheduledany movies in the “foreseeablefuture,” telling her agents “sheneeds a break.” Rumors circulat-ed last week that Aniston is sixmonths pregnant, and reps forthe actress have neitherconfirmed nor denied thereports.

Franklin calls offweddingAretha Franklin has called offher planned summer wedding toWillie Wilkerson, according toHollyscoop. “Will and I have de-cided we were moving a little toofast, and there were a number ofthings that had not beenthought through thoroughly,”Franklin says in a statement.“There will be no wedding at thistime. We will not comment on itany further because of the verypersonal and sensitive nature ofit. We appreciate all of the manywell wishes from friends.”

More Berry andAubry dramaGabriel Aubry, Halle Berry’s ex-boyfriend and the father of herdaughter, is reportedly being in-vestigated for criminal child en-dangerment and battery, accord-ing to TMZ. Law enforcementsources say Aubry allegedlyshoved his nanny into a doorwhile she was holding his andBerry’s 3-year-old daughter,Nahla. The investigation waslaunched after the nanny filed apolice report, and Child Protec-tive Services is reportedly mount-ing an investigation.

Get Prepared with Career Training In:PRACTICAL NURSING*MEDICAL ASSISTANT

MEDICAL BILLING & CODING

By, Stefan Rothler; Freelance Health Writer;

If you’re like Tom, you know how frustrating it is when you can’t “Stand Up” for yourself. Especially in the bedroom! And even though your wife tells you “its okay”— she secretly wishes you weren’t such “a softy”. For your sake and hers.

Tom’s Story:Tom M. had a big problem. His love-life was “coming

up short”. And like a lot of men his age, he had a tough time “performing” in the bedroom.

But Tom’s wife was kind. She reassured him with words like “it’s no big deal”--- but it really was. So she urged him to get some help. He took her advice…

Tom searched the web for answers, and came up with nothing but scams. Everything he tried failed. He thought about asking his doctor about that well-known “little blue pill”. But it was way too expensive (as much as $30.00 per tablet). Plus, it doesn’t work for 32% of all men who try it. And according to its warning labels you could wind up deaf, blind, or even dead! It’s just not worth the risk.

The Secret of the Adult Film IndustryAnd by age 60, you’re left with a fraction of the HGH

you used to have. The signs of aging become impossible to ignore... narrower shoulders and more weight around the middle... thinner skin that loses elasticity... creases and wrinkles... aching joints and brittle bones... all signs that your body is gradually breaking down.

Add to that, decreased desire and ability and a loss of muscle tone that leads to a dangerous loss of agility and balance. But none of this has to happen...

Secret of The Rich and FamousAs Tom continued his research, he came across

something unusual. He read that male actors in the adult fi lm industry use something called “Herbal Virility”. Before fi lming, the actors would pop one of these tiny pills in their mouth--- so when the director yells “action”- there’s always plenty of it!

It’s been the secret of adult fi lm producers for years! That’s because instead of taking a full-hour for it to work, Herbal Virility starts giving you “solid, long-lasting results” almost immediately after you take it --- no waiting!

Tom was excited to try it. After all, Herbal Virility helped thousands of men get back their confi dence in the bedroom. And since its all-natural Herbal Virility is a lot safer than drugs. There are no pumps to hassle with, no embarrassing doctor visits needed and it’s surprisingly aff ordable. Plus, it’s based on Nobel prize-winning research...

Here’s How It Works:In 1998, three scientists shared a Nobel Prize for

discovering that the chemical compound nitric oxide (or NO) plays a vital role in widening your blood vessels so blood fl ows more freely... especially in the “intimate areas” of your body.

When you’re young, nitric oxide fl ows abundantly through your body. Unfortunately, as you grow older, your NO production starts to diminish. As a result, so does your love life. That’s why Herbal Virility is so im-portant.

Just pop a Herbal Virility into your mouth. Its proprietary formulation has no bitter taste and dissolves quickly into your bloodstream.

Herbal Virility contains all 25 of the most potent natural male enhancement boosters on earth. It helps kick-start your body’s natural ability to produce nitric oxide on its own. So you’re ready for action when you want it --- and as often as you want it. You’ll get a “big boost” of confi dence in the bedroom. And your wife will be so excited she may wake up the neighbors!

Rave Reviews Coming in EverydayMost men, who experience Herbal Virility’s fi rm

results, can’t get enough of it. Here’s what people are saying...

W. Pritchett II of Newport News, VA, tells us;“After I turned 52, I couldn’t get it to work. I thought my fun was over. But now, thanks to Herbal Virility I can heat things up in the bedroom anytime I want to.” Please send me another 6 month supply!”

Melissa M. of Key Largo, FL reports; “Herbal Virility saved our marriage! What a diff erence it made in my husband. He’s like a new man! All I can say is WOW!”.

Not Available in StoresThe demand for Herbal Virility has been

overwhelming. And until now, there just wasn’t enough of it to go around. That’s why the makers of Herbal Virility are limiting its supply to newspaper and magazine readers only.

Herbal Virility is amazing. Men who try it can’t seem to get enough. But to really understand why, you have to try it for yourself. That’s why the makers of Herbal Virility asked us to “spread the word” by off ering our readers a full-month supply, at a super-discounted, “readers only” price.

Try Herbal Virility Risk-Free... with a Limited Time Money-Back Guarantee!

See for yourself. You have time to decide. Here’s our guarantee; If Herbal Virility doesn’t give you back your desire, your stamina --- and get you “interested” whenever you need it --- you won’t have to pay a dime. Either you’re absolutely thrilled with Herbal Virility… or you get back every red cent!

Edwidge Danticat’s ‘CreateDangerously’ is a Haitian treasure

It’s fitting that Edwidge Danti-cat’s “Create Dangerously: TheImmigrant Artist at Work” isthis year’s “One Book, OnePhiladelphia” selection. Grow-ing up in Haiti, Danticat is fa-miliar with reading and dis-cussing a single book as a com-munity.

“In Haiti, a book was verymuch a treasured object, evencomic books,” she says. “Ifthere was a book in the neigh-borhood, everybody in theneighborhood had read thatbook.”

After arriving in Brooklyn atthe age of 12, Danticat wasoverwhelmed by the amountof information available, forfree, at the public library. “Icouldn’t believe that all thesebooks would be entrusted toordinary citizens,” recalls Dan-

ticat, who now calls Miamihome. “They had a section ofHaitian books in French andCreole, and before I was able toread or speak English I wasable to have this. I would just

hoard the books — I was al-ways one of those kids, andthen later one of those adults, who was always at the limit ofwhat you can borrow.”

A collection of essays with amemoir sensibility, “CreateDangerously” examines whatit’s like to be an artist who hasleft a homeland in turmoil.“Most artists, I would imagine, have a kind of drive and urge –something that they perhapsdo not understand that is push-ing them to create,” says Danti-cat. “The extra thing that I’vefound as an immigrant is thatyou’re also examining this gapthat you’ve fallen into — thisgap that is between where youcome from and where you are.”

TailoringMilan’s renowned for itssuiting and — surprise, sur-prise — this season was noexception. While most de-signers were looking to thepast, Paul Smith looked sea-side. Dark, skinny pieces were dotted with neon, nautical motifs. But whileSmith toyed with pops ofcolor, Hermes returned tosobriety with slim, mutedtailoring. Meanwhile, thetailoring at Burberry Pror-sum arrived slim-cut (notic-ing a trend?) in shades ofgray and later corduroywith military-meets-countryflight jackets.

Trends from the men’sautumn/winter shows

MilitaryIt’s a men’s fashionparadigm that’s been re-worked on countless occa-sions, and this season wasno different. Versace wentfor camouflage but not thetype designed to make youblend in with yoursurroundings — unless ofcourse you’re on an acidtrip in a rainbow world.Conversely, Jil Sander’s de-signer Raf Simons foundhimself in a dark place witha collection worthy of theGestapo, with long leathertrench coats and black suits— a comment on oppres-sion, perhaps.

Period dressPrada went down the liter-ary trope of appearanceand reality in a show enti-tled “Il Palazzo. A Palace ofRole Play” with actors GaryOldman, Adrien Brody andJamie Bell all taking to therunway in high double-breasted suits and whitecollars reminiscent of Fin-de-Siecle chic — theyshould have topped it offwith a cape from Dolce &Gabbana. AlexanderMcQueen went down asimilarly archaic route withpinstripe suits, breechesand Prince of Waleschecks.

Nintendo isn’t exactlyknown for its Internetacumen. “Get off mylawn” might be a

good way to put its online pre-paredness. However, the 3DSeShop has been shaving awayat that notion by quietly, andsteadily, putting out good re-lease after good release. Hereare reviews of a few recent ti-tles that you can buy in yourunderwear.

‘Mighty Switch Force!’Company: WayForwardTechnologiesCost: $7Console: Nintendo 3DSGrade: This is WayForward’s thirddownload-only title for a Nin-tendo portable. The first two,“Mighty Flip Champs!” and“Shantae: Risky’s Revenge,” setthe bar incredibly high.“Mighty Switch Force!” mostlystays perched on that bar. It’s afantastic looking puzzle gamemasking as a platformer. Thehook? You can use the 3-D to‘switch’ around layers of thegame-world, creating new path-ways. It’s fun as all get out, butcan seem repetitive later on.You know, just like marriage.

‘Zen Pinball’Company: Zen StudiosCost: $7Console: Nintendo 3DSGrade: On one hand, this is just a pin-ball game. It’s 2012 and long-haired dudes in Rush t-shirtsaren’t exactly flooding thepinball halls. On the other

hand, it’s a pretty dang goodrepresentation. The controlswork flawlessly, the tables arevaried and the 3-D almosttricks you into thinking youare staring at a real pinballtable (for whatever that’sworth).

“Mighty Switch Force!”looks like a platformer,but it’s really a puzzle

game.

Hartnell gets call, readyfor All-Star weekend

Five goals in two games — infront of his dad, no less —would have been a pretty goodweek for Scott Hartnell. Butthe father-son trip will headnorth from Sunrise, Fla. to Ot-tawa, Ontario.

For the first time in his 11-year career, Scott Hartnell is anAll-Star. He will replace injuredBlackhawk Jonathan Toews.

“Obviously [I’m] really, real-ly excited,” Hartnell told theteam’s PR staff. “I didn’t knowif I was going to get the call ornot and unfortunately someguys have to get hurt and takesome time off. It’ll be a prettycool experience.”

The last weekend wasn’t sobad, either. Scott’s father, Bill, was with the team in Newark,N.J., on Saturday and Philadel-phia on Sunday to watch hisson play.

“Five goals in two games,it’s a good weekend for any-body, so I’ll take it,” said Hart-nell after the shootout loss tothe Bruins on Sunday. Theemotional high continued in-to Monday, when Hartnelllearned he was named the No.

2 star of the week behindEvgeni Malkin and ahead ofEvgeni Nabokov.

“I found out [Monday]night,” said Hartnell of his All-Star nod. “I got a call fromBrendan Shanahan and hetold me to kind of keep it onthe down-low, but it was pret-ty exciting. It was right beforebedtime and my heart was rac-ing. I got a little nervous, too.”

The phantom team in thePrince Fielder sweepstakesturned out to be Detroit.

Fielder agreed to a nine-year, $214 million deal withthe Tigers yesterday, accord-ing to multiple Internet re-ports, including one on MLB’sofficial website. Detroit seem-ingly came out of nowhere, right after star Victor Mar-tinez tore his left ACL. Hecould potentially miss the en-

tire 2012 season.Fielder’s old team, the Mil-

waukee Brewers, never evenmade an offer for the free-swinging first baseman. Brew-

ers GM Doug Melvin told theMilwaukee Journal Sentinelthat he knew they couldn’tmatch a $200 million offersheet.

Fielder, a three-time All-Star selection, slugged 38home runs and drove in 120runs last season while holdinga .299 batting average. The 27-year-old has hit 230 homers inseven MLB seasons.

Expert tips

Inhabi might make findingan apartment easy, but thereare still a few things to keepin mind before moving intoyour new pad:

Read the lease carefully: Thisone sounds like a no-brainer,but it’s all too easy to skimover the legalese. “If it’s notclear on the lease, make sureit’s clear in writing,” Farruksuggests.

Make sure it fits your dailyroutine: “We’ve heard ofrenters who found the per-fect place, but the neighbor-hood was a dead zone forthe cell-phone carrier,” hesays.

Get insured: “Landlord insur-ance policies are typically lim-ited to caring for theproperty, not assets belong-in g to the renter,” says Farruk.“In an emergency or disaster,[renters insurance] could savethe renter a lot of money.”

ONLY 6 LEFT!

In a city like Philly, whererenters deal directly withlandlords and propertymanagers, not brokers, the

apartment hunt usually entailsscrolling through page afterpage of listings, leaving voice-mails, sending e-mails andcrossing your fingers.

“Online listing models arejust a version of newspaperclassifieds. We thought technol-ogy could be leveraged to cre-ate something more efficient,”says Jameel Farruk, co-founderof Inhabi, a new apartment-hunting site.

Inhabi follows an “eHarmo-ny-style platform,” Farruk says, referring to one of the largestonline dating sites. Renters cre-ate a free Inhabi account, fillout a profile about who theyare and what they’re lookingfor — whether it’s hardwoodfloors or a quick commute to

work — and get “matched”with potential landlords.

Landlords get notified whena renter matches one of theirproperties, then can messagethe renter through Inhabi —which makes money by supply-ing the renter’s contact info.

It’s a “behavioral shift” thatseems to be catching on, Farruksays. “Usually landlords list

properties and then wait forpeople to find them. We re-versed the roles.”

Farruk’s background is intech marketing and brandmanagement, and co-founderDavid Friedman has experiencein real estate and artificial intel-ligence. Both live locally, though they plan to expand thesite to other cities in the future.

“Online listingmodels are just aversion ofnewspaperclassifieds. Wethought technologycould be leveragedto create somethingmore efficient.”JAMEEL FARRUK, CO-FOUNDER, INHABI

Jewelry designer Elsa Meharychannels Bali, India and Tulum inher vibrant pad You don’t need to go to Cairo to replicate the look“I can remember being 19 yearsold and hand-carrying a largeglass lantern from Cairo backon the plane because it was toofragile to pack in my luggage,”Elsa Mehary says of one of themany conversation-starting de-tails in her pad. “But now, thesame lamp can be found in astore like West Elm, importedfor half the price and minus thestory of adventure in an intri-cate maze of bazaars,” she adds.

Mehary has lived in her two-bedroom apartment in ParkSlope for 15 years. She’s spentthat time filling the place withcarefully chosen figures andtextiles she’s picked up travel-ing to places such as Bali, Indiaand Tulum. “I think of myapartment as a serene oasis inthe center of chaos,” she says.

She’s achieved an overalllook and feeling of zen througha mix of spiritual figures andcolors that she found in nearand far-flung places. There’sthe gold head of Buddha shefound in Chinatown: “It’s reallyheavy but I love the serenity itbrings to the space.” And an or-nate cross lies next to a box of

Bach flower remedies importedfrom Israel. “I was born inEthiopia and plan on returningthis year to visit all the amazingchurches built into the groundin Lalibela. The cross is a tradi-tional Orthodox relic from Ad-dis Ababa, originally owned bymy mom,” she explains.

“The look of my apartmentis constantly changing,”Mehary admits. But the senseof calm never changes. “I incor-porate the feng shui principlesin determining location of col-or throughout the house.”

Get the look1Play with accent walls

“I change the accent wallover each fireplace. Red in thebedroom for passion and bluein the living room for calm,”Mehary says.

2Embrace the blank canvas “Many of the walls feature

blank canvases because I didn'twant them to look bare, but Idid want there to be a sense of

space. And because I am a cre-ative, I need lots ofinspirational items around forreference when I am drawingor designing,” she explains.

3Rotate accessories “I kept almost all of the

walls white so that I could ac-cessorize the place with color-ful pillows, fabrics or textures. Iswitch them in and out accord-ing to the season,” Meharysays.
