    OCTOBER 28, 2012 . THIRTIETH SUDAY I ORDIARY TIME

Sometimes we can't see the things that are right in front of us. It's not thatwe're blind. Instead, we are distracted. That's one reason so many states ormunicipalities have outlawed texting while driving. It is said that drivers thatare texting are taking their eyes off the road for a minimum of five seconds. Most do it for a longer time. At highway speeds a car will travel four-hundred-forty feet, almost one-and-a-half times the length of a football field.A lot can happen in that distance, including a crash. Of course, one doesn'thave to be texting while driving to run into something while distracted. Run-ning into someone can happen almost anywhere.

It just so happened that blind Bartimaeus was in the right location torun into Jesus. Well, he didn't actually "run" into him. Bartimaeus was sitting

on the side of the road and the crowds passed him by, and when he heardwhat all the hubbub was about, Bartimaeus called out to Jesus asking to behealed. The noise of the crowd provoked Bartimaeus, and in turn, the criesof Bartimaeus broke through the noise to catch the attention of Jesus.

Sometimes things happen in our own lives that break through the distractions that may surround usevery day. Illness is one of those times that changes how we interact with the world. Our routine is broken. We're no longer on cruise control. We have to reassess where we're at. One of the things that we can do whenwe're sick is ask to celebrate the sacrament of anointing of the sick. This prayer for healing can bring familyand friends together to ask for comfort and hope in a time of trial and distress. The sacrament doesn't guaran-tee full health. But it is our Catholic prayer, asking God to restore us to the community of faith and to make uswhole again so that we can serve others

Halloween:Has its origins in the ancient pagan Celtic andRoman fall festivals which commemorated the new year and thepassing of the dead. Pope Boniface VI set November 1 as AllSaint's Day, known as All Hallowsmas, from Middle EnglishAlholowmesse. When November 2 was made All Souls Day200 years later, the three days' celebration was called Hallow-mas. The customs of Halloween, costumes, food & partiesevolved over time, some rooted in ancient rites, others in re-membrance of those who had died. These pagan feasts wereChristianized by new meanings, although today it remainslargely a secular holiday. ~Rev. James Gaffney
