Henryk GÓRECKI (1933-2010)Concerto-Cantata, Op 65World Première RecordingsAnna Górecka (piano) Carol Wincenc (flute)Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra Antoni Wit
Górecki is an important figure in Polish music, and his Third Symphony is one of the great ‘success stories’ in all twentieth
century symphonic music. This deeply moving quality permeates his other works, but he was also a more ambiguous, interesting composer. These four works showcase different aspects of his art in a broad ranging approach. The nearest match in the current catalog is Nonesuch, which has issued the Harpsichord Concerto coupled with the Little Requiem, but our disc presents the piano version of the Concerto. Anna Górecka’s piano recording of the same concerto is on Conifer but in a mixed recital coupled with Bacewicz and Shostakovich. Antoni Wit is a master of this repertoire and his international reputation is growing all the time.

Dmitry SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975)Symphony No 2 in B major ‘To October’, Op 14Symphony No 15 in A major, Op 141Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra • Vasily Petrenko
These two hugely contrasting symphonies come from the opposite ends of Shostakovich’s life and career. The Second Symphony was written to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Bolshevik October Revolution. Its advanced idiom of experimental textures and abstract effects can perhaps be best described as organised musical chaos. The Fifteenth was Shostakovich’s last symphony and is filled with remarkable contrasts, from the rollicking quotes from Rossini’s William Tell Overture and eerie references to Wagner’s Götterdämmerung and Tristan und Isolde, to the last and perhaps most imaginative of the composer’s symphonic passacaglias.
Vasily Petrenko became Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2009, and in 2013 will become Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He was the Classical BRIT Awards Male Artist of the Year 2010 and the Classic FM/Gramophone Young Artist of the Year 2007. In 2009 he was awarded Honorary Doctorates by the University of Liverpool andLiverpool Hope University.

Béla BARTÓK (1881-1945)Concerto for OrchestraMusic for Strings, Percussion and CelestaBaltimore Symphony Orchestra Marin Alsop
Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, one of his greatest works, was written in the United States after the composer was forced to flee Hungary during World
War II. It is not only a brilliant display vehicle for each instrumental section but a work of considerable structural ingenuity that unites classical forms and sonorities with the pungency of folk rhythms and harmonies. Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta explores darker moods through a score of marvellously poised symmetry. This release follows Marin Alsop’s ‘riveting’ (Gramophone) Baltimore Symphony recordings of Dvořák’s symphonies.
This has long been a popular coupling of works by Béla Bartók, but this new release rides on the crest of a wave of previous successes and will occupy a leading position amongst the competition on the quality of its recording and performance. Marin Alsop and the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra have a synergy which has made their Dvořák symphonic recordings sound ‘as fresh as when Dvořák put pen to paper’ (BBC Music Magazine on the Symphonies 7 and 8, NBD 0010). Of Dvořák’s New World Symphony (8.570714) BBC Music Magazine also wrote, ‘it is rare to be able to say that a performance forces one to listen to a work anew, but this is exactly what Alsop’s reading achieves.’ 8.572486
Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809)Piano Trios, Vol 2Kungsbacka Piano Trio
Haydn’s Keyboard Trios possess a rich variety of themes and musical inventiveness, with strong demandson the pianist. The C major is dramatic and eventful. Patterns are varied in the E major where Haydngives the violin major lyrical
statements, whilst in the E flat major he uses all his wit and guile to launch the finale’s captivating and joyful dance finale. The E flat major Hob. XV: 30 is notable for is subtle thematic development and commanding drama. Volume 1 (8.572040) of this series has been greatly admired, not least by Gramophone which stated that the Kungsbacka Piano Trio had nothing to fear from any other account.

Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827)Der glorreiche Augenblick, Op 136Choral Fantasia, Op 80Claire Rutter (soprano) • Matilde Wallevik (mezzo-soprano) • Peter Hoare (tenor) • Stephen Gadd (baritone) • Marta Fontannais-Simmons (mezzo-soprano) Julian Davies (tenor) • Leon
McCawley (piano) • Boys of Westminster Under School Senior Choir • City of London Choir • Royal Philharmonic Orchestra • Hilary Davan Wetton
Beethoven’s unusual cantata Der glorreiche Augenblick (The GloriousMoment) is filled with patriotic praise for Vienna and tributes to the kings and princes of Europe after the defeat of Napoleon. It was performed alongside his symphonic Wellington’s Victory at its première in 1814. The Fantasia in C minor for piano, chorus and orchestra opens with a virtuosic, improvisatory Adagio for the piano. The work’s main theme anticipates the famous Ode to Joy setting Beethoven later devised for his Choral Symphony.

The English Song Series • 22Benjamin BRITTEN (1913-1976)Songs and Proverbs of William Blake, Op 74Tit for Tat • Folk-songsRoderick Williams (baritone) Iain Burnside (piano)
Britten wrote his Songs and Proverbs of William Blake, Op. 74 for the
German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau in 1965. The singer admired the ‘concentration and enigmatic smile’ of the settings, and Brittenconstructed, through alternation of proverbs with songs, and an intensecontemplation on the human and the eternal, one of his greatest songcycles. By contrast Tit for Tat sees Britten revisiting youthful, light-spirited settings of the poet Walter de la Mare. The folk-song arrangements are amongst his most famous, and beloved.
The baritone Roderick Williams encompasses a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary music, in the opera house, on the concert platform and in recital. His recital appearances have taken him to London’s Wigmore Hall and many European festivals. He has an extensive discography and his recordings of English song with IainBurnside have received particular acclaim. 8.572600

Reinhard SCHWARZ-SCHILLING (1904-1985)Partita • Polonaise • Violin ConcertoKirill Troussov (violin) Staatskapelle WeimarJosé Serebrier
The so-called ‘lost generation’ of German composers includes many whose lives were shaped by events after 1933. One such was Reinhard
Schwarz-Schilling, a composer of strong spiritual depth whose 1953 Violin Concerto was rooted in his wartime experiences. Ingeniously constructed, it subtly evokes the influence of Bach, without at all embracing neo-classicism. Its moving slow movement is followed by a finale that marries virtuosity with dance-like magnetism. The Partita is much admired for its colour and vitality, whilst the Polonaise is a lighter work, brimming with high spirits.

Simon MAYR (1763-1845)Concerto in D minor, ‘Concerto bergamasco’Keyboard Concerto in C majorTrio Concertante in A minorNatalie Schwaabe (flute/piccolo) • Andrea Steinberg (clarinet/basset horn) • Antonio Spiller, Yi Li & David van Dijk (violins) • Bavarian (Classical Players) • Franz Hauk (harpsichord & conductor)
Though revered as ‘the father of Italian opera’, Simon Mayr also wrote large-scale instrumental and orchestral music. His 1820 Concerto in D minor has an ingenious trick up its sleeve: it introduces each of the four soloists in turn with the flute, for example, soloing in the first movement and the clarinet in the second. This elegant, lyrical work hints at Beethoven but also at folklore in a winning way. The assured Keyboard Concerto reveals the influence of Haydn on theGerman-born Mayr whilst the Trio Concertante is imbued with Mayr’s vivid operatic impulses. 8.570927
Peter MAXWELL DAVIES (b 1934)Symphony No 2 St Thomas WakeBBC Philharmonic Peter Maxwell Davies
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’ Second Symphony is his ‘Sea Symphony’, a complex, virtuosic work that explores in absorbing, increasingly dynamic fashion, the ocean’s proximity
and what the composer calls ‘the architecture of its forms’. Both themes and orchestration are masterly. The percussion section is richly voiced, adding considerably to the symphony’s very particular, rugged and varied sound world. St Thomas Wake, by contrast, is a disquieting but bravura exercise in parody, evoking memories of the composer’s experiences during the Second World War.

NORDIC VIOLIN FAVOURITESHenning Kraggerud (violin) • Dalasinfoniettan • Bjarte Engeset
There was a particularly rich vein of Nordic writing for the violin between the years 1910 and 1930. In this recital Henning Kraggerud, an exemplary stylist lauded for his Sibelius and Sinding concerto disc, Naxos 8.557266 (CD) and
6.110056 (SACD) (‘Kraggerud’s performance is superb throughout’ – Classics Today.com), explores this memorable repertoire. It ranges from Halvorsen’s folk-flecked Norwegian Dance to Stenhammar’s passionate Sentimental Romances. Late romanticism floods Sinding’s Abendstimmung whilst Sibelius’s Six Humoresques remain a masterpiece of the genre. The earlier works of Ole Bull illustrate the brilliance and panache of ‘The Nordic Paganini’. 8.572827
Eugene ZÁDOR (1894-1977)Five ContrastsA Children’s Symphony • Aria and AllegroHungarian Capriccio • Csárdás RhapsodyBudapest Symphony Orchestra MÁV Mariusz SmolijWorld Première Recordings
Eugene Zádor was a remarkable colourist and orchestrator whose Hollywood film work was extensive. He described himself as a ‘middle of the road extremist’. The Aria and Allegro is a beautifully crafted work brimming with rhythmic energy. Five Contrasts for Orchestra demonstrates his rich sound world at its most vibrant; film noir jostling with a bigbooted country dance. The lighter A Children’s Symphony is one of his most popular pieces – communicative, witty, accessible. We also hear two small and captivating evocations of his native Hungary. 8.572548
Fernando LOPES-GRAÇA (1908-1993)Symphony for Orchestra • Suite Rústica No 1December Poem • Festival MarchRoyal Scottish National Orchestra Álvaro Cassuto
Fernando Lopes-Graça was one of the most prolific Portuguese
composers of the 20th century. His use of Portuguese folk-music to forge a personal style is represented in the Suite Rústica No. 1. More sombre moods are expressed in the dark atmosphere of December Poem, which contrasts with the extrovert Festival March. Neo-classical in its extended structures and thematic development, Lopes-Graça’s award-winning Symphony maintains an unmistakable connection with the colours and textures of his nation to create music of great expressive and dramatic depth. 8.572892
Mario CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO (1895-1968)Piano Concerto No 1 in G minor, Op 46Piano Concerto No 2 in F major, Op 92Four Dances from ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, Op 167*Alessandro Marangoni (piano) • Malmö Symphony Orchestra Andrew Mogrelia* First Performance and Recording
Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s two Piano Concertos form a contrasting pair. Concerto No. 1, written in 1927, is a vivid and witty example of his romantic spirit, exquisite melodies and rich yet transparent orchestration. Concerto No. 2, composed a decade later, is a darker, more dramatic and virtuosic work. The deeply-felt and dreamlike slow movement and passionate finale are tinged with bleak moments of somber agitation, suggestive of unfolding tragic events with the imminent introduction of the Fascist Racial Laws that led Castelnuovo-Tedesco to seek
exile in the USA in 1939. The Four Dances from ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, part of the composer’s recurring fascination for the art of Shakespeare, are atmospheric, richly characterised and hugely enjoyable. This is their first performance and recording.

I SAW ETERNITYMichael Bloss (organ) • Leslie De’Ath (piano) • John Marshman (cello) • Stephen Pierre (clarinet) • Elora Festival Singers • Noel Edison
This recording brings together eleven leading composers whose origins in or strong associations with Canada are manifest in their central position in Canadian musical life. In a programme through which the power
of tradition and faith flows strongly, themes are explored ranging from paradise and heavenly fulfilment to tragic loss; and from timeless hymn and psalm texts to an exploration of the brevity of human existence in the title work, I Saw Eternity. One of the finest chamber choirs in Canada and beyond, the Elora Festival Singers’ ‘must-have’ (Gramophone) programme of Eric Whitacre (8.559677) is just one of their many acclaimed recordings. 8.572812
William BOLCOM (b 1938)Complete Gospel Preludes, Books 1- 4Gregory Hand, organ
William Bolcom, named ‘2007 Composer of the Year’ by Musical America, has written in many genres. His Gospel Preludes, based on hymns, are amongst his most fascinating and compulsive works. Bold, brilliant, sometimes bizarre,
but always hugely enjoyable, the Preludes vary widely, sometimes adorned by jazzy chords and rich swing, sometimes exuding tour-deforce brilliance or – when the music is quiet and reflective – possessed of a mesmeric reassurance. The GRAMMY® Award-winning Naxos recording of Bolcom’s Songs of Innocence and Experience is available on 8.559216-18.

FEVER PITCHString Fever Marin Alsop (leader)
Founded by Marin Alsop in 1981, String Fever was hailed for its remarkable versatility and unique blend of pop, jazz and classical repertoire. Fever Pitch presents pieces written and arranged for String Fever by a quartet of leading composers whose origins range from 1920s vaudeville to big band,
film music and American and Afro-Caribbean folk. Marin Alsop performs numerous solos in a kaleidoscopic program which follows on from the swing standards of It Don’t Mean A Thing (8.572834).
Fever Pitch enters the market after having the ground warmed for it by String Fever’s It Don’t Mean A Thing (8.572843), which covered big band standards. Fever Pitch shows this groundbreaking ensemble in pieces written especially for them, and this uniquely tailor-made repertoire shows their remarkably multi-faceted character to best advantage. 8.572835
Camillo SIVORI (1815-1894)12 Études-Caprices, Op 25La Génoise – 1er Caprice Folies espagnoles, Op 29Fulvio Luciani, violinMassimiliano Motterle (piano)
Camillo Sivori was Paganini’s only acknowledged pupil, and a musician in his master’s mould, a virtuoso of incredible brilliance. He was also a composer of distinction. His
Caprice-Studies are superbly realised examples of grace, lyricism and exceptional digital difficulty drawing on the resources of a prodigious technique. La Génoise consists of a theme and seven variations with violin and piano equal partners in a breathtaking display of brio and bravura. Folies espagnoles is a descriptive marvel, a parade of narrative ‘engravings’ that summon up Spanish sights and sounds.
8.572484
Joaquín TURINA (1882-1949) Piano Music, Vol 8Jordi Masó (piano)
Turina was one of the great musical poets of his native Andalusia, and his music is drenched in its colour, variety and dance. Jardins d’Andalousie illustrates his dazzlingly picturesque absorption of the seguidilla rhythm and an invocation of courtly scenes. Le
Quartier de Santa Cruz is one of his longest piano works and depicts a dramatic narrative of love, duel, and drama in Seville, whilst En el cortijo visits the plains for a quartet of rural episodes of rich characterisation and virtuosity. Jordi Masó’s on-going Turina cycle has received worldwide acclaim. 8.572682
ALL SHALL BE WELLExultate Singers • David Ogden (conductor) • Richard May (cello)Rebecca Quiney (Soprano) • Oliver Condy (Tenor)
This wide-ranging programme offers connections and contrasts in music of devotion and consolation. The settings by life-long friends Holst and Vaughan Williams, whilst very different, are highly affecting. The
music of Rachmaninov, whose hymn derives from his 1915 All-Night Vigil, and John Tavener is immersed in the ritual of the Russian Orthodox Church. Marian Prayers come from Pierre Villette and Knut Nystedt. The music that gives its name to the title of the disc is the beautiful ‘conversation’ of Roxanna Panufnik. 8.572760
Paul HINDEMITH (1895-1963) String Quartets, Vol 1String Quartet No 2 in F minor, Op 10String Quartet No 3 in C major, Op 16Amar Quartet
Paul Hindemith wrote seven String Quartets, all of which reflect the experience and practical assurance
of a distinguished violinist and, later, violist. No. 2 was written in 1918 whilst he was a soldier on active duty. It’s a bracing, dynamic and pithy work with a clever series of variations which parody romantic excess, and a virtuosic finale. No. 3 followed early in 1920 and was an instant success, a thrilling example of Hindemith’s concise imagination at work. This passionate quartet, with its richly varied material, is one of his supreme chamber masterpieces. 8.572163
Leonard BERNSTEIN (1918-1990): Arias and BarcarollesSamuel BARBER (1910-1981): Overture to ‘The School for Scanda’lDavid DIAMOND (1915-2005): Elegy in Memory of Maurice RavelJane Bunnell, mezzo-soprano • Dale Duesing, baritone • Seattle Symphony • Gerard Schwarz
This triumvirate of composers represents an essentially lyrical impulse in American music. Leonard Bernstein’s Arias and Barcarolles was completed in 1988 but had existed in some form since 1955. The cycle of songs about love and marriage was written for voice and piano (four-hands) but orchestrated, under Bernstein’s supervision, by Bright Sheng, and premièred by Gerard Schwarz. Eclectic, exciting, jazzy, and Mahlerian, it reflects Bernstein in all his multifaceted glory. Barber’s concert overture is a vibrant work, fizzing with energy, whilst Diamond’s Elegy offers a poignant, noble and at times violent lament for Ravel.

Great Violinists • Jascha HEIFETZ (1901-1987)Heifetz Encores, Volume 11946-1956 RecordingsMark Obert-Thorn, reissue producer and audio restoration engineer
Heifetz’s series of arrangements and transcriptions for violin and piano reveal just how tasteful and refined a musician he was. Crafted with precision, and played with
passion, they are alive with his stylistic awareness. Whether in hisRachmaninov transcriptions or in Robert Russell Bennett’s A Song Sonata, Heifetz lavished equal care on these gems and they enriched his concert programmes. They also proved hugely popular on disc – thirteen pieces come from a 1960 LP famously called ‘Heifetz’ – and their variety, virtuosity and sheer beauty remain imperishable examples of the art of the violin.

Great Pianists • Women at the Piano, Volume 4An Anthology of Historic Performances (1921-1955)Marina A Ledin & Victor Ledin (producers)
There is a great variety of performers, traditions, and composers represented in volume 4 of this pioneering series. The pianists comprise the well known,
the undeservedly neglected, and the tragic. One such is Rosa Tamarkina, a prodigiously talented musician, who died at 30. There is Liza Fuchsova, a brilliant Czech, who can be heard in a rare 1944 HMV disc. Lilly Dymont was recorded in Berlin in 1930, Marie-Thérèse Fourneau in wartime Paris, and Winifred Christie in London in 1921. Of volume 3 (8.111217) Gramophone wrote: ‘a fascinating series… and brilliant assembly, which makes you look forward to volume 4.’

Paradise LostThéodore DuboisLes Cris de ParisLes Solistes des SièclesGeoffroy Jourdain (conductor)
This is the first-ever recording of a forgotten oratorio by Théodore Dubois (1837-1924), composed in the early 1870s. The project was initiated by Palazzetto Bru Zane –
Centre de musique romantique française (Venice), which carriedout the musicological research. This original and aesthetically accomplished work, winner of the Concours Musical initiated by the City of Paris in 1878, is loosely based on episodes from Milton’s Paradise Lost. It is performed by the excellent choir, Les Cris de Paris, and soloists of the ensemble Les Siècles, conducted by Geoffrey Jordan. This is the first recording in what is to be a long-term collaboration between Les Cris de Paris and Aparté; the next one will be devoted to Robert Schumann. AP030

After Dreams, and the Bach Cello Suites, two recordings that enjoyed both critical and public acclaim, Ophélie Gaillard turns here to Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto and the complete music for cello and piano of Franz Liszt. The result of this juxtaposition of two worlds, those of two composers of great sensitivity, is a programme captivatingly combining passion with an expression of the mysteries of life. Once again we see the eclecticism that Ophélie Gaillard has always shown.

“Pierrot Lunaire”, the scandalous ‘Red Mass’ whith its bloody host, stems from a musical art in which Viennese cabaret, Neapolitan and oriental antecedents and German Jewish humour blend with stable, clearly audible ‘Sprechgesand’ (Speech-song) in a musical framework that

The Beatles for OrchestraRoyal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra • Carl Davis
“A chance remark sparked off this CD. My old friend, Sandra Parr, Concerts Manager and backbone of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra said in passing, ‘You know we are always being asked to play Beatles, but we don’t have anything’. I replied, ‘I’ll give you something to play’. Indeed, the
original recordings are still with us and I feel for a long time yet. But a new, sensitive arrangement would demonstrate the range of their talent from the early rock and roll influences to the quirky, with my own special preference for Paul McCartney’s soulful ballads. Their work was pure genius”.Carl Davis, June 2011

Dimitri MITROPOULOSpreviously unissued “Live” recordingsOrchestre Symphonique Philharmonique de New YorkDimitri Mitropoulos
Pianist, composer, teacher and conductor, Mitropoulos in considered as “a forgotten giant “. If he was a big defender of the contemporary music, if his name still remains linked to Mahler and if his biggest triumph was “Wozzeck” (A. Berg) , these two unreleased sound documents show that he did not disdain the classic and romantic repertoire. Tchaïkovski’s piano concerto, recorded November 1954, is starring a 20 years old pianist: Van Cliburn. This young man made his debuts at Carnegie Hall and then achieved worldwide recognition in 1958 at age 23, when he won the first quadrennial International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow, at the height of the Cold War.

EUGENIUSZ MORAWSKI
Charles Baudelaire once wrote: “Many a jewel sleeps buried in shadow and oblivion, far from the miner’s pickaxe and drill; many a flower reluctantly pours forth its sweet perfume like a secret in the depths of solitude”. Those words of the French poet seem to fit perfectly Eugeniusz Morawski. This album would have never happened without a truly infectious and, at the same time, inspiring enthusiasm of Monika Wolińska. It opens the first – and hopefully the possibly shortest – act of bringing the preserved compositional oeuvre of Morawski to light from a deep mist of the 20th-century history. Will consecutive acts follow? The present album gathers all currently extant symphonic poems of Eugeniusz Morawski.

ICSHOSTAKOVICHSymphonies Nos 1 - 3Netherlands Radio Choir (Symphonies Nos 2 & 3)Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra • Mark Wigglesworth
This well-filled disc combines the first three symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich, all written before the composer had reached his twenty-third birthday. The First Symphony was
in fact the graduation piece that completed his studies at the Leningrad Conservatory, but to quote Mark Wigglesworth’s own liner notes to this disc, ‘Shostakovich’s trade-mark musical gestures are all immediately obvious. Nervous tension and sarcastic wit, passion and intelligence, contemplation and action, nobility and banality – all expressed with an economy of means that is simultaneously subtle and direct.’ The work was an immediate success, and soon gained worldwide recognition through performances by Walter, Toscanini, and Klemperer. ‘The Soviet Union had discovered its first international star, and the authorities proclaimed him as an exaltation of the new at the expense of the old.’ The two symphonies that followed fared much less well, however, and are still rarely performed in concert. At least nominally, there is a political theme to both works - the Second Symphony was a commission from the State Publishing House to honour the tenth anniversary of the October Revolution, and the Third, with its subtitle ‘The First of May’, was a celebration of the international Worker’s Day. BIS-SACD-1603
BEETHOVEN: Complete Works for Solo Piano Volume 12: Variations (II)Ronald Brautigam (fortepiano)
In March 1783, the readers of Cramer’s Magazin der Musik could read about a certain ‘Louis van Beethoven’, a ‘boy … of most promising talent’, whose first published work was being advertised as ‘nine variations for the
pianoforte, written by him on a march, engraved at Mannheim.’ The piece in question was the Dressler Variations, and it marked not only the beginning of an illustrious career, but also the start of Ludwig van Beethoven’s lifelong involvement with variation form, culminating almost forty years later in the monumental Diabelli Variations for solo piano, and – in another field – the third movement of his Ninth symphony. In comparison, WoO 63 and the other works included here are certainly less heavy-weight, even if the so-called Venni Amore Variations, WoO 65, has a duration of more than 20 minutes, and in spite of its early date (1790/91) points forward to a much later period in Beethoven’s œuvre.

London CallingTuva Semmingsen (mezzo-soprano)Barokksolistene (leader)Bjarte Eike
As the hub of a fledgling British Empire, London around 1710 was burgeoning with new wealth and offered the perfect setting for operatic entrepreneurs eager to spread the latest Italian fashions. It was thus a city of opportunity for Handel, fresh from spending five years in Italy,
but also for many other touring musicians including Arcangelo Corelli, Francesco Maria Veracini and Francesco Geminiani. This recording unveils a portrait of the chameleon Handel, emerging in the panache of his early Italian-styled Amadigi, reaching maturity in the ‘English operatic’ Hercules and arriving finally in the perennial melodic grace of Theodora, his penultimate oratorio. Extracts from these works, in which the young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Tuva Semmingsen displays both vocal agility and a wide-ranging emotional palette, are interspersed with instrumental works by Handel’s Italian contemporaries. Corelli’s Concerto grosso in D major, from the celebrated Opus 6, and Geminiani’s ‘La Follia’ in D minor – incidentally a reworking of Corelli’s famous violin sonata – both illustrate Italian instrumental music at its most sumptuous, in colourful and dynamic performances by the Norwegian period band Barokksolistene.

SCHUBERTOperatic OverturesHaydn Sinfonietta WienManfred Huss
Although Franz Schubert’s Lieder, his symphonies and his chamber music are staples in concert halls and on disc, his music for the stage is much less well known. He began composing operas in 1811, at the tender age of 13, and it is
probable that the tuition he received from Antonio Salieri around that time fuelled his interest for the stage even further. Although he had one of his first public successes with the Singspiel Die Zwillingsbrüder, Schubert later encountered difficulties in getting his operas staged: most of them would remain unperformed for a long time after his death in 1828, and are still rarities in the repertoire. With a few exceptions, the overtures to these works have suffered a similar neglect, even though they display an astonishing abundance of musical ideas, and possess a stirring dramatic character beyond anything found in for instance the symphonic works. The striking originality of the music becomes even more obvious when performed on period instruments, as on the present recording with Manfred Huss and the fifty musicians in the Haydn Sinfonietta Wien, whose previous discs on BIS of works by Haydn has been warmly received by critics worldwide.

Renowned for his rich production in the field of orchestral music, Kalevi Aho is also a prolific composer for
chamber forces. Here three works spanning two decades have been combined, with the Sonata for two accordions originating in 1984 as a Sonata for solo accordion described by the composer in his own liner notes as ‘comparable in aspiration with Liszt’s most virtuosic piano works’. Completed five years later, the duo version exploits to the utmost the unique possibilities offered by the accordion and remains highly virtuosic. It was premièred as late as 2002 by Veli and Susanne Kujala, who also perform it on this recording. At the other end of the time-line described by this disc, the Trio for clarinet, viola and piano was commissioned to be the set chamber music work of the 2006 Tampere Viola Competition. BIS-CD-1886
FRANÇAIXChamber Music for WindsBergen Woodwind Quintet
This disc celebrates the centenary of Jean Françaix, (1912-1997), as well as his music, written with the stated aim to ‘give pleasure’. A precocious talent, praised by Ravel for his great gifts and curiosity, and astonishing Nadia Boulanger with his ability, Françaix wrote his first chamber
work for winds, the Quartet, in 1933 at the age of 21, and completed his Quintet No.2 more than 50 years later – with a remarkably consistent style marked by lightness and wit. Françaix’ works are favourites not only with audiences but also with the musicians themselves, enjoying the challenges of his virtuosic writing, his fleet way with rhythms and timbres and the conversational character of the interplay between individual parts. The highly regarded Bergen Woodwind Quintet, consisting of solo players from the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, here perform four chamber works for winds which all share these characteristics – and they do so with obvious enjoyment. The versatile ensemble released its first disc on BIS in 1985, and has recorded chamber music by Carl Nielsen as well as by David Maslanka, to critical acclaim.

The typical American optimistic spirit is captured in the sweeping melodies and triumphant snorities of composer James Beckel’s American Dream.
“Typical American” patriotism shines through in American March King John Philip Sousa’s Washington Post. The Legacy of Robert Russell BennettThe United States Army Field Band
This album is the fourth in a series of concert band recordings honoring the lives and music of individuals who have made significant contributions to band repertoire and to music education. The Legacy of Robert Russell Bennett honors a man who achieved great fame as an arranger, but always considered his true calling to be a composer. Bennett arranged hundreds of Broadway and film scores and composed operas, symphonies, and concertos. The United States Army Field Band recorded this album in June 2006 at Devers Hall in Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. Representing some of the finest musical talent in America, The United States Army Field Band is known around the world as “The Musical Ambassadors of the Army.” The Legacy of Robert Russell Bennett features some of Bennett’s greatest works including “1939 World’s Fair: TNT Cocktail” and “Down to the Sea in Ships.” Honoring the memory and innumerable musical contributions of Robert Russell Bennett, this album is both inspiring and captivating. Music has been a part of military functions for thousands of years. From the time that it was used to incite or distract the enemy to the concert halls and ceremonies of today, the primary role of ceremonial music has not changed: to promote pride, devotion to duty and esprit de

This album, performed by The United States Air Force Concert Band, Ceremonial Brass and Singing Sergeants, is comprised of a collection of fanfares, honors, marches, hymns, military songs and bugle calls. Each track was recorded with the intention of providing appropriate, dignified music for military ceremonies when a band is otherwise unavailable. ALT 70742

ICString Trios from the East Goeyvaerts String TrioAll the music on this recording has at least one thing in common: it seeks to find the oak tree in the acorn, or William Blake’s “world in a grain of sand”. One might almost write “grain of sound”, because all these works begin with very little — a note or two, something not far removed from silence, a seed that gives rise
to an entire, and frequently paradoxical, world of consonance and dissonance, monologue and dialogue (and, here, trialogue), growth and retrenchment, height and depth.

J.S.Bach: Johannes-Passion • La Petite Bande: Sigiswald Kuijken“During Bach’s lifetime there were four different performances, each time with new modifications, some in response to the circumstances at the time, others influenced by which musicians and instruments he then had at his disposal. However Bach experimented to the greatest degree with the second version, dating from 1725: for instance, he used a different opening chorus (which was Later to become the closing chorus of the first part of the St Matthew Passion, a work yet to be composed at this stage) and a couple of other arias near the end of the work. For the Later performances he reverted to his first version from 1724, albeit with some differences in instrumentation. For instance, in the final version he includes a bassono grosso, but no one knows for certain which instrument he had in mind; possibly a 16-foot bassoon, i.e. a contrabassoon, a veritable chimney pot two metres in length. However, he scored this instrument in combination with the delicate sound of the lute and two violas d’amore, of all things! I cannot believe that Bach would opt for such an instrument in this passage; an 8-foot bassoon is more likely and the term bassono grosso probably indicates this more modern type
of instrument rather than the earlier dulcian, although the latter had not totally fallen out of fashion at the time. However, I would not venture a definite opinion as to what bassono grosso means in this context. So we did not use this instrument: this was yet another reason to stick with the first version, since it raises fewer uncertain issues. Nevertheless, there are still various grey areas involved. Even prior to the first performance, before making the individual orchestral parts, Bach began to write out the score in fine calligraphy, a task he did not complete; and this score deviates in some aspects from the orchestral material used in the actual performance. The process of determining the most probable historical truth continues to have Elements reminiscent of a detective novel; anyway, it will never be possible to clarify certain details.” - Sigiswald Kuijken CC 72545 ( 2-SACDs)

The Piano Quintet op.44 and Piano Quartet op.47 date from a brief period during which Schumann focused his attention intensively on chamber music (between June 1842 and January 1843). These works

The Quintet, whichmade a powerful impression on Wagner, is probably one of his most sophisticated works, into which Schumann poured all the creative energy he derived from meticulous examination of similar works by his predecessors, especially Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schubert.

Three Russian MasterworksRussian ‘classical’ music seems to have a dual consciousness: sometimes grave a inndteriorised, sometimes luminous and resolutely forward-looking. At root, this sentiment draws equally ocno utnhteless traditions of the biggest country in the world and on its relationship with western Europe, and especia Fllyrance, from the 18th century onwards. If we had to define the very special atmosphere of Russian music in a few words, we might say that it represents the ‘exchange’, ‘sharing’ and ‘absorption’ of an infinity of cultural and musica lidioms. The principal interest of the works on this set is the approach they represent to three central aspects of th irsepertory, three ‘Treasures of Russia’, through three of its most famous composers: the influence of Orth oredloigxious music with the Vespers of Serge Rachmaninoff; the modernity and importance of the musica’li mage’ with Modest
Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition; and finally the languor and inner heartbreak so characteristic of the Russian soul, as laid bare in one of the peaks of musical emotion – the Sixth Symphony of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the ‘Pathétique’. HMX2908385.87

Has Johann Sebastian Bach’s humour dried up because the extraordinary importance of his music sanctifies him? Surely not: on the one hand, even the most sacred of his cantatas abound with an almost excessive amount of worldly vitality. On the other, especially Bach’s secular

Kerem’s style is powerful and direct, reminiscent of Prokofiev in its steely strength and motoric energy.

1999 Wayne Peterson Prize from San Francisco State University; Perle’s Critical Moments II, one of the ensemble’s recent commissions, is “remarkably fresh in its spiky crystalline fragments, rapid atonal flurries and muted wisps of sound” (Los Angeles Times); and Albert’s kaleidoscopic Thirteen Ways is as evocative and stimulating as the poem that inspired it.

Antonio VIVALDI (1678-1741) Concertos for StringsTafelmusik Baroque OrchestraJeanne Lamon (Music Director)Anner Bylsma (Violoncello)
Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was a musical genius and shone at his brightest when writing for strings. His ever-popular Four Seasons aside, there are countless other extraordinary
concertos that Vivaldi wrote for strings. This recording, a re-release dating from 1992, presents no fewer than nine concertos: two featuring solo cello; one for solo violin and cello; one for two violins and two cellos; one for four violins; and finally four for string orchestra without soloists. Extraordinary repertoire demands extraordinary performances and those from our orchestra and guests are second to none. TMK1009CD

Although Henry Purcell (1659-1695) lived only 36 years, he was one of the finest and most original composers of his day. His duties
were divided between the royal court and the London theatres. He penned music for 40 plays, much of which was published one year after his death in a set entitled A Collection of Ayres, Compos’d for the Theatre, and upon Other Occasions. The four suites recorded here are taken from the four semi-operas: Dioclesian, King Arthur, The Fairy Queen and The Indian Queen. TMK1010CD

Ravi Shankar: The Living Room Sessions Part 1Ravi Shankar (sitar) • Tanmoy Bose (tabla) • Kenji Ota (treble tanpura) • Barry Phillips (bass tanpura)
“This is rather different recording when, at almost 92 years, I was fooling around at home at Encinitas, California withmy sitar, playing pieces with Tanmoy Bose on tabla. We recorded seven ragas in four days in my living room and hada lot of fun. This disc has four of those ragas - the first one, Raga Malgunji has both a slow Vilambit gat and a displayin Jhaptal of ten beats in complicated, rhythmic patterns and finishes that conveys the sadness of being unable tomerge with the Supreme. The second and third ragas, Raga Khamaj and Raga Kedara are in the romantic Thumristyle. The final number is a spontaneous, melodic pattern which came to my mind, when I was told about the death ofmy dear friend Satyajit Ray. For me, the tracks illustrate the depths and beauty of Indian classical music, whichcan evoke a range of emotional intensity through energetic and complicated rhytmic patterns. I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I did when I recorded it!” Ravi Shankar EMW1006
Claudia Aurora: SilencioClaudio Aurora (voice) • Javier Moreno (acoustic guitar) • Andres Garcia (acoustic guitar, mandolin)Jon Short (double bass) • Brian Mullan (cello, piano) • Bernardo Couto (portuguese guitar)Fernando Messias (voice)
With a following to rival flamenco, the haunting melodies of Portuguese fado have always held
listeners spellbound; Claudia Aurora is its powerful new voice. The singer-songwriter’s debut album, “Silêncio”, is the first collection of original fado songs to be recorded in the UK since the great Portuguese Fado diva Amália Rodrigues recorded at Abbey Road Studios in 1952.

Carla Pires Rota Das PaixoesCarla Pires (vocals) • Luis Guerrero (Portuguese guitar) • António Neto (Classical guitar) • Vasco Sousa (Doublebass & acoustic bass) • Enzo Daversa (Accordion, piano) • Ceciliu Isfan (Violin, viola) • Manu Teixera (Percussion)
With her luminous alto voice like a rainbow over the Portugese river
Tejo, Carla Pires modernises with joy secular music: a previously unpublished repertoire, refined arrangements with majestic cords, but also a piano and an accordion. Already famous in Portugal for having incarnated the role of Amália Rodrigues in the theatre, she also has the talent to thrill the crowds. With this first international album she lets us discover a neo-fado which is poetic and full of paradoxes, in the clair-obscure style. 479067
David Liebman • Ellery Eskelin: Non SequitursDavid Liebman (tenor saxophone) • Ellery Eskelin (tenor saxophone) • Tony Marino (bass) • Jim Black (drums)
“Non Sequiturs is a suite written expressly for this group in which the band’s musical energy is altered by various compositional progressions (and impediments) much like the flow of a river or stream over varied geographical terrain. The form is episodic, based on elemental balance rather than narrative logic. The composed portions provide ballast against which we as improvisors make our choices elaborating upon (or more often contrasting) the given material, resulting in a compositional and group oriented approach rather than soloistic one (even as there remain some overtly soloistic passages). Often I have provided rhythms upon which we spontaneously choose our own notes.” Ellery Eskelin OGY710
Jimmy Lyons & Sunny Murray Trio: Jump UpJimmy Lyons (alto saxophone)John Lindberg (double bass)Sunny Murray (drums)
“Jimmy Lyons looked in all directions, and even found motivation in the spirit of swing models like JimmieLuncefordand Chick Webb in “Jump
Up” (could Sunny Murray be Cozy [Cole]? His strength is still his sound, his percussive lineas individual as with Taylor, his cymbal work as insistent as with Ayler) as a spur to his Sufi-like soloing, and incanta-tion of repeated phrases that release tension by flying off into the unknown. Lyons inspired by and invoking Luncefordand Webb, no more or less than Taylor and Ayler, Elmo and Bird, Lindberg and Murray, all whirling together now in memory, in timeless time, in this music.” Art Lange OGY669
Marco Von Orelli 6Close Ties On Hidden LanesMarco von Orelli (trumpet)Lukas Briggen (trombone)Lukas Roos bass (clarinet)Michel Wintsch (piano, synthesizer)Kaspar von Grünigen (double bass)Samuel Dühsler (drums)
Music of invention, recollection, and imagination. Images, metaphors and associations that show us ways out of whateverism. And yet a music that can stand alone by itself – the music of a trumpet player who has an unmistakable tendency to melos and at the same time is fully aware that you have to break with tradition if you want to come up with an authentic melody. On this debut album under his own name, Marco von Orelli also reveals himself as a conceptualist capable of creating a unique ensemble sound. OGY709

With his natural curiosity, the musical art of Franck Dadure is an agora of different influences. Between electro-acoustic and wacky free jazz, tinged with drum and bass, orient-dub and spoken words, the composer sketches a surrealistic voyage, with the help of Fabien Duscombs (drums), Daniel Zimmermann (trombone), black Sifichi (voice), Smadj (oud) and DJ Click (theremin and remixing).

recalling the heydays of Stax, plus two poetic reedmen, this album, with compositions and lyrics by Sandra and her close partner, flautist-producer Jî Drû, packs a powerful punch. JV-570002
BACH TO JAZZCaroline AdomeitCaroline Adomeit (violin)Julian Riem (piano)
Caroline Adomeit has assembled a jewel of a musical declaration of love. Above all, to her instrument, the violin. For her, there are hardly any limits to what she can – or wants to – do with the violin, which is why this recording supplements
Bach’s Partita with unusual pieces like Ysaye’s Mazurka or Monti’s Czardas. The Strad Magazine praised Caroline Adomeit in no uncertain terms: “An uneven programme does little to hide the obvious skills of a young fiddler.” OC 834

A Musical Tour of South TyrolMusic by Mozart
The Places • Northern Italy has been variously ruled, over the centuries. South Tyrol, seen here, retains much of its Austrian past, with some regions predominantly German-speaking and others Italian. Scenes are shown of Brixen (Bressanone), with its Cathedral and Bishop’s Palace, and various historic castles, including Castel Tirolo. The Music • Music for the tour is by Mozart, with two Piano Concertos, one
written in Salzburg in 1777 for a visiting French pianist and the other composed during the last year of Mozart’s life, at the end of a decade spent in independence in Vienna. 2.110303
A Musical Journey: SWITZERLANDA Musical Visit to the Abbey of EinsiedelnMusic by JS Bach and Vivaldi
The Places • The scenes shown are of the Benedictine Abbey and Church at Einsiedeln, in the Swiss canton of Schwyz. The monastery, in origin dating from the 10th century, was largely rebuilt in the 18th century to designs by Caspar Moosbrugger of Vorarlberg, a former lay brother in the community, and has long been an important centre of pilgrimage to the shrine of the Black
Madonna, now in a black marble chapel built in the early 19th century. The Music • The tour is accompanied by the third and fourth of the four Orchestral Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach and a Concerto for oboe, violin and continuo by Antonio Vivaldi. 2.110302
A Musical Journey: GERMANYA Musical Visit to the Munich Puppet and Nuremberg Toy MuseumsMusic by various composers
The Places • The Puppet Museum in Munich houses a remarkable display of puppets of all kinds, from string and hand puppets to the shadow puppets of China. Nuremberg, famous for its toys, has a Toy Museum, with exhibits ranging from the earliest times to the more nearly contemporary. From this collection we see a doll’s house, accurate in every detail, and some of the museum’s mechanical toys, in working order. The Music • The tour is accompanied by a series of popular piano pieces, ranging from Mozart and Beethoven to Saint-Saëns and Debussy. Mozart’s Turkish March is followed by Beethoven’s so-called Rage over a Lost Penny. Included is a Chopin Waltz, a Mendelssohn Song Without Words and Tchaikovsky’s Chanson triste. The music ends with Liszt’s piano transcription of the Danse macabre of Saint-Saëns.
