Welcome to Community Music Center! Our commitment to the 92-year mission of provid-ing high quality music education to anyone continues to unfold today in ways that offer life-changing experiences to our students. I invite you to look through this year’s program catalog to learn how you can grow and be challenged musically in a community referred to by many as their chosen family.
CMC offers lessons on over 30 different instru-ments, opportunity to join a variety of ensem-bles, and a range of coursework in areas such as music theory and songwriting.
CMC is proud to have played an important role this past year in the lives of over 2,300 students and roughly 19,000 music enthusiasts in our audiences. We presented over 300 performances at our Capp Street concert hall and at other locations around the Bay Area.
Our Victorian home on Capp Street, with its beautiful architecture, gardens, and a peaceful courtyard, has served the Mission District and other neigh-borhoods for over 92 years. I am thrilled to share the news that this past year CMC purchased the adjacent Victorian house, deepening our commit-ment to our community. Our enhanced campus vision will allow our com-munity to enjoy more teaching studios, ensemble rehearsal spaces, work areas, and a state-of-the-art renovated concert hall.
These are truly excit-ing and historic times at Community Music Center. Come make music with us!

At both the Mission and Richmond District locations, our faculty provides in-struction that is rich and diverse in musical styles and traditions, accessible by students of all levels. With ages of our students spanning over 90 years, CMC believes that it is never too late to study music.

CMC Model for Musical Study

Private lessons: The foundation of instruc-tion at CMC, private lessons provide guid-ance through the process of learning to play an instrument or sing. Designed to nurture individual talent, lessons help students learn how to practice, develop technical skill, improve musicianship, and gain a knowl-edge of and appreciation for musical works. Exam preparation: Some CMC faculty can prepare students for the MTAC (Music Teachers Association of California), ASTA (American String Teachers Association), ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and RCM (Royal Con-servatory of Music/Canada) exams if de-sired. Ask a registrar for more information. Theory & Musicianship classes: These group classes offer a deeper understanding of how music works and help students with rhythm, ear training, reading, composition and performance skills.
Ensemble classes: Complementing instru-mental and voice lessons, ensemble classes give students the opportunity to make music with others.
Performances: Students can share their progress and talents and develop perfor-mance skills through concerts at CMC and other locations around the Bay Area. CMC’s over 300 annual recitals and concerts also give students a chance to hone their listen-ing skills and hear students, faculty and other musicians perform.
Students are invited to participate in recitals every quarter. Juried evaluations in May offer students the opportunity to: get feedback from other faculty members, audition for the all-level All School Recital held in June, and if age 18 or under and receiving financial aid, audition for private lesson merit scholarships.
Styles: Private and group classes are avail-able in many styles, including: western classi-cal, jazz, Latin, blues, folk, rock, popular, East-ern European, Middle Eastern, and Flamenco.
Adult Certificate Program: This program provides a guided course of study to students of all levels, integrating all elements of the CMC Model for Musical Study. For more in-formation, please see page 27.

Attend CMC’s free or low cost concerts to expand your exposure to a variety of instruments. Visit music stores and ask to try out the instrument(s) that interest you.
Consider the types of music you or your child enjoy.
Find out if there are any physical limitations (injuries, hand size, etc.) to keep in mind.
Think about any issues with transporting the instrument.

Children’s ChorusYoung singers: find your voice and learn to blend it into a group. We will work on basic ear training, sight singing and performance skills in an envi-ronment that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork and fun. In addition to presenting three concerts each year, the Children’s Chorus performs in Spanish at CMC’s “Posarela” celebration each De-cember.

Family MusicThis is a mixed-age music class for infants to 3 year olds and parents/caregivers – a musical bonding experience and an introduction to sing-ing, rhythmic activities, movement and musical play. Each child participates at his or her own level, and the adults sing, move and play along with the children. More than one adult can attend with a registered child.

Music for ChildrenThis group class helps kids develop musicianship through rhythm games, songs, creative move-ment and the use of Orff instruments, which are designed to give a successful musical experience to all beginning musicians. Students will be intro-duced to symphonic instruments and experiment with the way their sounds are produced. They will also learn popular songs from around the world.

String Orchestra for ChildrenThis ensemble is for children who would like the experience of being part of an orchestra at an ear-ly stage in their playing. We will play easy tunes and rounds for one, two and three voices. Teen Jazz BandPlay in a jazz band and learn to improvise, swing, and balance a group sound playing standard forms and tunes. We will work on intonation, tone quality, rhythmic accuracy, shaping a musical phrase through articulation, dynamics, and the use of accents and sforzandos. The band will put on winter and spring performances at CMC.
Ages: Teens
Instruments: Trumpet, trombone, saxophone, and rhythm section (piano, guitar, bass and drums)

Comprehensive Musicianship Program (CMP)The CMP is a partial scholarship program that provides current CMC private instrumental les-son students with free theory/musicianship and ensemble classes for the academic year. It offers students an integrated curriculum that includes multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists and performance opportunities through-out the year.

Prerequisites: Currently enrolled in CMC private instrumental lessons for a minimum of one year. Admission is by recommendation from the CMC private lesson instructor and audition during the spring.

Inner City Young Musicians Program (ICYMP)The ICYMP is a full scholarship program that pro-vides students with weekly free private instru-mental lessons, theory/musicianship and ensem-ble classes for the academic year. It offers students an integrated curriculum that includes multicul-tural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists and performance opportunities throughout the year. In collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District, this program focuses on serving middle school and high school students from low-income San Francisco households.

Mission District Young Musicians Program (MDYMP)The MDYMP is a full scholarship program that provides students with free weekly private in-strumental/voice lessons, theory/musicianship and ensemble classes, and the opportunity to experience multicultural lecture-demonstrations by guest artists. The curriculum emphasizes Latin music, both popular and classical. Students will perform at CMC in December and June, and will have additional performance opportunities off-site throughout the year. In collaboration with the San Francisco public schools and the Mission Cul-tural Center for Latino Arts, this program serves 7th-12th graders who live or study in the Mission District.
Ages: 12-18
Instruments: All and voice
Musical Styles: Latin (classical and popular)
Prerequisites: Minimum two years playing an instrument or singing. Admission based on both need and merit. Auditions during the spring; other audition dates to be arranged.

Camp CMC An Ensemble Camp for Young Musicians
Kids, make great music and great friends at Community Music Center this summer! Camp CMC, a weeklong summer camp, offers kids the chance to play with other musicians and have fun together. Activities alternate between chamber group, ensemble, theory and musi-cianship classes. Students will be grouped in ensembles by instrument and level. Campers will also participate in activities designed to de-velop general musicianship skills, such as playing percussion instruments, singing, and rhythmic movement. Camp CMC players will share their work in a performance at the end of the week.

Prerequisites: Minimum two years of study on an instrument and concurrent enrollment in private lessons (not necessarily at CMC)

CMC’s Kids ¡Bomba! Camp Afro-Caribbean Rhythms, Dance and Song
Through drumming, singing, dancing and story-telling, children learn about Bomba, a 300-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican tradition, and its connec-tions to other Caribbean musical forms. Activities are designed to help children develop musician-ship, body coordination and expressiveness, and bi-lingual literacy skills in a fun and supportive group environment. This weeklong camp is staffed by a dynamic team of experienced artists and educators, and culminates with an informal multi-disciplinary performance where campers share what they learned with their families and friends. No experience necessary, just the desire to learn something new and exciting and have lots of fun!

CMC’s Musical Discovery CampPlaying Together: Sounds, Rhythms and Songs
CMC’s Musical Discovery Camp introduces kids to the world of musical sounds and the joys of mak-ing music. Previous experience singing or play-ing an instrument is welcome but not required. The week’s activities will include singing, rhythm work, and a basic introduction to music theory. Kids will participate in a hands-on exploration of the many ways musical sounds are produced using unconventional musical artifacts - instru-ments made out of everyday objects. Campers will be part of an ensemble where they will learn about dynamics, sound quality, listening and playing at the same time, staying in rhythm, and following the conductor. Campers will also have an opportunity to try a variety of musical instru-ments (strings, woodwinds, piano, percussion) during the week. At the end of the week, students will share their work in an informal performance.

Our body is our instrument. How we use it in-fluences the quality of our movements and the sounds we make with our voices and musical instruments. This group class will present tools to free yourself form tension, pain and injury, im-prove the quality and longevity of your musical life and find innovative sources for expression, composition and improvisation based on the Feldenkrais® Method and Body-Mind Centering.® It is an inquiry into the relationship between the body and the mind through movement, guided attention and non-verbal dialogue. Lyric Writing The Language of Lyric
A songwriter is both a lyricist and a composer, with a passion for combining language with music. This course focuses on the lyricist, on the craft of writing the language in a song. The con-cepts we’ll study are all primary elements in lyric and include an examination of the main figures of speech in figurative language (e.g. metaphor, simile, symbolism, etc.). We’ll examine story de-velopment (who, what, when, where, and why), the four points of view common in narrative, rhyme and the principals of phonetic connectiv-ity, and development of the primary song sec-tions (the verse, refrain, chorus, and bridge). We’ll also learn to “object write,” a creative writing tech-nique involving the sense bound imagery associ-ated with memories and experiences…the stuff stories come from. Music Theory III This class continues the course of study set out in Theory I and II, with more of an emphasis on compositional work (and homework). The first phase of the class will be a quick review of ma-terials from earlier theory classes. Then we will explore concepts that take an ever-expanding view of music into account, discussing elements that relate to larger forms and structures, while trying to keep the smaller details in mind. All materials for the course will be made available by the instructor. Topics covered include: phrases and cadences, the sequence, the motive and motive development, modulation/key-changes, musical forms, modes, and counterpoint.

Songwriting Fundamentals
Taught by a published composer (Warner Broth-ers, Rounder Records), who has worked with Big Joe Turner, Bo Diddley, Steve Cropper, John Oates and Eddie Money, this group class is designed to give aspiring songwriters a working understand-ing of the fundamentals of a popular song. We will study essential tools and techniques that aid in the songwriting process, including: har-monic structure and chord progression, melody/lyric phrasing, lyric writing and development and song structure. We will apply these techniques with the goal of each student writing a complete song.

The Adult Certificate Program (ACP) guides stu-dents of all skill levels through an integrated course of study. Your certificate program is built around an instrument (including voice), musical style (such as classical, Latin or jazz), and set of personal goals. You will work with the ACP Coor-dinator and in most cases a faculty member who serves as an advisor throughout your studies. Routine advisory meetings are scheduled to ex-change feedback and assess your progress.
You and your advisor will work together to de-velop the overarching goals of your studies and regularly evaluate your progress with written
reports. Your coursework will bring together a unique combination of Community Music Cen-ter’s wide array of offerings in private lessons, theory, musicianship and ensembles. This is in support of benchmark and culminating perfor-mances at CMC’s concert hall or other community venues.
Start your program at the beginning of any quar-ter and complete it in the recommended four to six quarters. Programs are built with a minimum of eight courses selected from CMC’s four core ar-eas of study (see page 1).

Community PartnershipsCMC collaborates with numerous arts and non-arts organizations to provide music education both on and off-site. These collaborations include music programming with Bethany Center Senior Housing/Ruth’s Table, St. Joseph’s Family Center, a partnership with UCSF and the SF De-partment of Aging and Adult Services through which 12 choirs will be started over a five-year period at senior centers throughout San Francisco, and work with numerous schools.

Concert Hall Performances, Rentals & RecordingsPerformances at CMC CMC presents music in our Mission District branch Concert Hall throughout the year. Perfor-mances range from world class touring musicians to performances from our esteemed faculty’s professional groups, to student recitals. Please check www.sfcmc.org for calendar listings.
Concert Hall RentalsCMC’s Mission District Branch Concert Hall is avail-able for rent to the public for music-related con-certs and events, rehearsals, and sound recording. Renovated in 2006, the concert hall is wheelchair accessible and opens onto the courtyard of an Ital-ianate Victorian house dating back to the 1870s. There is a balcony at the rear of the hall, where there is also a sound recording booth. The audito-rium seats roughly 130.
For benefit concerts for other organizations, CMC must receive written confirmation of beneficiary. Admission fees over $15/$10 must be approved by CMC’s Executive Director.

Sound Recording ServicesThe Mission District Branch Concert Hall’s CD and digital audio tape (DAT) recording system offers performers the opportunity to produce high-quality audio recordings. Recording options are available to anyone renting the recital hall. CMC provides the services of a professional engineer for all recordings. Note: The recital hall is not a sound-proofed building. Recordings may pick up ambient sound.
Fees (recording engineer provided)$185 - Recordings with a Basic Rental. The rates include a recording engineer for three hours (pre-concert set up plus concert recording) and one CD-R ($5 for additional CDs). Q: Do I need a registration appointment to sign up for classes?
A: Yes. All new students must make an appoint-ment with the registrar to sign up for private or group classes. Classes are filled on a first come first served basis and there is no guarantee that you will receive your desired class.
Q: Can I still sign up for lessons or classes after a quarter has begun?
A: Yes. We add new students on a pro-rated ba-sis, charging only for the lessons taken from their starting date through the end of the quarter. Call your nearest branch or check our website for class availability.
Q: I studied at CMC years ago. Am I considered a new student or a returning student?
A: If you have not studied at CMC for more than two quarters, follow registration instructions as a new student. If you have a good payment history and attendance record, you may have some prior-ity over new students.
Q: Is it necessary to sign up for all 12 weeks (8 weeks in Summer session) of the quarter?
A: We work on a quarterly basis and do not make special arrangements unless students sign up after the quarter has begun.
Q: How do I apply for financial aid?
A: We welcome anyone to apply for a fee reduc-tion on the sliding scale. You must show proof of the family’s monthly net (after tax) income (or proof of your own monthly net income if you are single). If you are self-employed, you may submit bank statements and your tax return from the previous year. The sliding scale discount will be applied on the date this information is submitted. Q: How is the discount determined?
A: The sliding scale discount is based on your household’s size and the monthly net income of the family.
Q: What if I miss a lesson?
A: There is no credit, reimbursement or make-up for missed lessons. It is a courtesy to inform your teach-er if you plan to miss a lesson and it is at the discre-tion of the teacher to provide a make-up lesson.
Q: What if I get sick and miss a lesson?
A: Teachers are not required to make up a missed lesson due to a student’s absence. A leave of ab-sence may be granted by the teacher (with regis-trar’s approval) in cases of serious illness or injury.
Q: What if I am not happy with my class?
A: The registrar can work with you to find a better schedule, or you may drop the class after the first lesson. If you want to drop the class, notice must be given to the registrar at least 24 hours before the second week’s class in order to receive a re-imbursement for the remaining lessons. You will then be charged only for the first lesson (and the registration fee, if applicable).
Q: Can I apply for a full scholarship?
A: Any student currently a junior in high school or younger can apply for a full scholarship if the family is receiving a CMC sliding scale discount. There are scholarship auditions in May each year. Students applying for a scholarship should have at least one year of instrument study at CMC and their current CMC teacher’s recommendation.
Q: Are parents allowed to stay in the room where the class is held?
A: For children who are enrolled in private classes, parents are allowed to stay in the room with facul-ty approval. In group classes, parents are allowed to stay in the room only for the first class.
Q: Do you offer summer programs for kids?
A: CMC will offer three summer camps at the Mis-sion District Branch this year. Other classes for children held over the summer may include Fam-ily Music, Music for Children, String Orchestra for Children and private lessons. Q: Will I have the chance to perform for an audience?
A: We welcome all students to sign up for stu-dent recitals which are scheduled on Sundays throughout each quarter. There are also Perfor-mance Workshops hosted by faculty members. The instrument and the topic vary from quarter to quarter.

Senior discount: Seniors (age 65+) can apply for a sliding scale discount. Seniors who do not qualify for the sliding scale discount will receive a 30% discount.
Household discount: Each additional person from the same household enrolling in private lessons or group classes will be given a discount of $1.50 per lesson or class. This discount applies to full-fee students only.
Merit scholarships for youth: A limited number of full scholarships for private les-sons are awarded to students age 18 and un-der based on financial need and merit (see p.32). Juried auditions are held each May. Comprehensive youth scholarship pro-grams: Other scholarship programs include Comprehensive Musicianship Program, Inner City Young Musicians Program, and Mission Dis-trict Young Musicians Program (see pages 7-8).
Discount instrument rental: Because stu-dents must have access to their own instru-ments, CMC offers limited discount instrument rentals. A quarterly rental fee of $35 or $50 (depending on the rental instrument, with an additional $25 refundable deposit) is due at the time of rental. Instruments must be returned at the quarter’s end unless other arrangements are made with the registrar. Contact the registrar at the Mission District Branch for more information.

Registration PoliciesNew student registration: New students must call the registrar at the branch through which they wish to study in order to make a registration ap-pointment. (See new student registration dates under Academic Calendar on p. 36).

Purpose of registration: Registration is for scheduling and payment purposes only; the stu-dent’s first meeting with the faculty member will take place at the first lesson or class.
Current student registration: Current students must notify the registrar at the branch at which they are registered, during the specified dates, that they wish to continue their lesson or class. Students who do not do so will be dropped. (See current student registration dates under Academ-ic Calendar on inside back cover).
Late registration: Individuals unable to register during new or current student registration should contact the registrar at the branch where they wish to study. Late registration is pro-rated and on a space-available basis.
Payments: Full payment is due at registration. We accept cash, checks, Visa, MasterCard, Ameri-can Express and Discover. If payment is not made, student will be dropped immediately. In case of financial hardship, one half of the payment due may be paid at registration, with the balance due by the fifth lesson or class (third for Summer Quar-ter). There is a $15 check return fee.
Attendance policy: Regular and punctual atten-dance is one of the best investments students can make in their musical education. It is essential to progress, enjoyment and the high quality music at the heart of CMC’s mission. While some absences may be unavoidable, the accumulation of three or more absences in a given quarter may result in the evaluation of a student’s commitment to future study at CMC.
Communication about attendance is also an es-sential part of the teacher-student relationship. If a student is not going to be able to attend a les-son, he or she must notify the teacher or the front office. Teachers are not required to make up stu-dent absences. On occasion, however, with prop-er notification a makeup lesson may be arranged.
Missed lessons: Students pay tuition regard-less of their attendance. Students must notify the registrar before any absence, but this does not exempt the student from payment. Faculty mem-bers are not required to make up missed lessons caused by student absences. Faculty members may make up lessons caused by faculty member absences, or a credit will be applied to the stu-dent’s account.
Leaves of absence: In cases of serious illness or injury, a leave of absence may be arranged. Prior approval of both the faculty member and registrar is required. If approved, credit may be given for two or more consecutive absences.
Discontinuation: CMC reserves the right to discontinue a student’s enrollment at any time for reasons including, but not limited to: poor at-tendance, non-payment of fees, lack of interest, or disruptive behavior. If a student is dropped for non-payment of fees, the student might be able to continue the quarter by paying the unpaid bal-ance.
Refunds: Tuition refunds are given when lessons or classes are canceled by CMC. A refund, minus the first lesson or class cost plus registration fees, may also be given if the student decides not to continue after the first lesson or class and notifies the Registrar at least 24 hours prior to the second lesson. If the registrar is not notified at least 24 hours in advance, the student is responsible for the full quarter’s tuition.
Photo and video release policy: CMC occa-sionally photographs or videotapes students for its publications. Compensation will not be pro-vided to these individuals. See photo and video release statement on CMC’s registration form (see reverse).
