LEADERSHIP LETTERSThe Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho

seeks to enable the promise that, “Alpha Gamma Rho is the fraternity sharing a common bond within a dynamic, global agriculture committed to fostering the highest values and providing each and every brother with superior lifelong personal development and professional success.” The Educational Foundation assures that the Foundation’s assets are applied only to those purposes permitted by applicable tax law and those purposes for

which the funds were originally contributed. Without the generosity of alumni and friends, the mission of The

Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho to support the Fraternity’s efforts of making better men would not be possible. Whether through annual unrestricted gifts to the Loyalty Fund for AGR, designated gifts to

the AGRconnect Capital Campaign, a Heritage Club qualifying legacy gift or any other gift to the Foundation, each gift is an investment in educational and leadership development, helping shape the lives and careers of those throughout our Brotherhood.

Thank you to all those brothers who make a priority of giving to Alpha Gamma Rho!

Fraternally,

Doyle JacklinPresidentThe Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho

On behalf of the Home Office staff, we are pleased to provide you with the Fall 2014 Growth Report – “Higher Futures” – a glimpse into the performance of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho and the impact that is being provided to brothers and chapters of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. The future is bright as we truly are “making better men,” which would simply not be possible without the generous support of donors like you.

Whether you’re an initiated brother of Alpha Gamma Rho, or a friend who has witnessed the impact made on the lives of a loved one, you are a valued investor in a “broader and better agriculture” because you’ve invested in the development of future leaders – our AGR brothers. Thank you for your support of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho.

Compiled herein is a wealth of information, but I would specifically like to point your attention to the article “In Memory of a Hero,” the

progress we’ve made towards our $3 million goal funding support for AGRconnect, and the “How We Compare” section. These are all great examples of “Living the Promise and Values” of Alpha Gamma Rho, illustrating our continued success as leaders in agriculture and the Greek community with our innovative training and Foundation performance.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and for taking the time to learn more about our “Higher Futures.”

Fraternally and gratefully yours,

Brad GarrisonDirector of DevelopmentAlpha Gamma Rho Fraternity The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho

AGRconnect, the web-based education support program of Alpha Gamma Rho, is the most comprehensive education program of any fraternity in the U.S. While primarily developed for collegiate member and chapter program development, AGRconnect includes resources for everyone engaged in Alpha Gamma Rho — chapter advisers, alumni boards, housemothers and all alumni.

The 16 courses include specific modules that provide a wide range of content addressing everything from new member education and time management, to how to do the job of an officer, adviser and every other position within the chapter. AGRconnect also does what its name implies — helps connect chapter officers and others to their counterparts throughout the Fraternity and provides a repository for chapter materials.

The generous support from brothers and friends has made it all possible, and the enthusiastic adoption and use of the materials has made it a resounding success. In addition to developing the program infrastructure and preparing the materials, the AGRconnect Capital Campaign also provides on-going support for continued updates and additions through an endowment.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the $3 million campaign to develop and maintain this exciting program.

Fraternally,

Kirby BarrickAGRconnect Campaign ChairmanThe Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho

Alpha Gamma Rho has become more than just an organization that I am a part of; it has become part of me. Alpha Gamma Rho represents a group of brothers that I can always count on to support me in whatever endeavors I choose to pursue. My AGR brothers who have the same agricultural roots and background as myself, have greatly impacted my life as they challenge my way of thinking. I am constantly learning and being pushed to be the best in whatever I do while in AGR. The friendships that I have made through Alpha Gamma Rho can’t be replicated anywhere else, and for that, I will forever be thankful.

I believe that AGRconnect is valuable to chapters because it provides stability in order to prepare members to continue to attain the goals that previous leadership had set. AGRconnect can make following a vision attainable by providing a means of passing it down to the next individuals who

take over leadership. Placing documents on AGRconnect will allow the new leaders in the house to see what has succeeded and failed in the past, so they don't make the same mistake. I would encourage other undergrads to donate to AGRconnect because it is forming the foundation for future AGR members to efficiently learn and make decisions with the ever-increasing demand of time. AGRconnect is moving AGR forward and equipping brothers with more tools to encounter new challenges.

I chose to give to AGR because it has made such a positive impact in my life, provided lifelong friendships, and has truly transformed my way of thinking. All of the other organizations that I have had a privilege to serve in and people who have had influence on me are because of AGR. I want to give that opportunity to future AGRs and build upon it even more. I think my monetary gift has an impact in moving the fraternity forward as a whole and assuring that AGR has a successful future. Every contribution can make a difference, as it furthers the AGR Purpose of “making better men.”

IMPACTthe 2014 Leadership Seminars, in partnership with Sigma Alpha Sorority, featured breakout informational sessions designed to develop young members’ knowledge and skills in areas including time and chapter management, personal finance, conflict resolutions, communication and leadership strategies, recruitment education and much more. Along with 28 alumni advisers, 441 brothers representing 65 Alpha Gamma Rho Chapters attended this year’s four Leadership Seminars in Memphis, Kansas City, Reno and Philadelphia. In total, 667 Sigma Alpha and Alpha Gamma Rho members attended Leadership Seminars with support from Foundation grants.

It was great to have the opportunity to network with brothers from other chapters as well as establish new ideas and practices that I could use within our Chapter. I gained professional and leadership skills to become a better leader. I had a great time at the 2014 Leadership Seminar!

Cody Prosser, Ft. Hays State

”I attended the Leadership Seminar this year because it was an excellent opportunity to learn leadership skills that would benefit both my chapter and myself. It also provided excellent networking opportunities and opportunities to meet new people.

During the 1950s and early 1960s, college-aged men were in a unique situation as the United States was at war with North Vietnam and there was an ongoing draft. At Purdue University, every student was required to involve themselves in ROTC or in the Purdue Marching band their first two years of college. All Delta Chapter pledges and brothers participated, and many elected to stay in ROTC for all four years of college so they could enter military service as officers upon graduation. Many other brothers were drafted after completion of their degrees. Approximately half of each pledge class was involved in military service and more than 110 brothers who served the United States with military service during this time have been identified.

A lifetime resident of Owensville, Indiana, Brother Ronald Wayne Hurt, from the pledge class of 1962, received his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and was a leader of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho. Brother Hurt served in the United States Army and completed one tour of duty in Vietnam as an officer and elected to return for a second tour. Captain Hurt was awarded an Air Medal with “V” (Valor) Device, a Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device, an Army Commendation Medal (Achievement) and a Bronze Star

Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster) awarded posthumously. The Bronze Star Medal was awarded for his heroic action while serving as Liaison Officer with the 36th Engineers. In that role, Captain Hurt acted as a liaison between the engineers, a Special Forces advisory team, and the Vietnamese security forces. While serving as acting District Senior Advisor for Tinh Bien District, Chau Doc Province, South Vietnam, he and the District Chief flew in a

command and control helicopter to direct fire team strikes on an enemy force. Captain Hurt directed numerous gunship strikes onto enemy positions in spite of numerous hits received by his helicopter. For this action, Captain Hurt received the Air Medal with “V.”

Brother Hurt was killed when the vehicle he was driving hit a land mine in the Chau Doc Provence of South Vietnam on March 23, 1970 while serving his second tour of duty as

part of the United States’ effort to support the South Vietnam Army. He was the only Delta Chapter Brother to die in action during the Vietnam conflict. Brother Hurt was survived by his wife, Olga, and his two children, Michael and Tanya.

Over the past few years, Delta Chapter brothers from the 1950s and 60s have made efforts to reunite, plan the establishment of a scholarship fund and connect with Michael Hurt, Brother Hurt’s son. In early August, many Delta Chapter alumni from held a reunion at Brown County State Park in Indiana, and Michael Hurt was able to attend. Although Michael has spent his life on the west coast (his career has been in technology with Microsoft and comScore), he has continued to travel back to Indiana where he has maintained a passion for

his agricultural roots. During a meeting of alumni brothers and current Delta Chapter officers, it was voted to extend an invitation for membership to Michael Hurt. Following this, Michael Hurt was initiated by Delta Chapter and also participated in fundraising efforts to establish the scholarship in his father’s memory.

For his military service, including the ultimate sacrifice of his own life, and for his many contributions to the Delta Chapter of Alpha Gamma Rho, Brother Ronald Wayne Hurt is being remembered with the Ronald Wayne Hurt Memorial Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is intended to annually recognize a Delta Chapter upperclassman in good standing who is also:• Enrolled at Purdue University• Successfully involved in Fraternity

activities as well as University related activities and clubs

• Achieving a minimum GPA• With preference given to applicants

who are ROTC members, members with military experience or military reservists, active duty personnel or members who exhibit patriotism.

Contributions to the fund may be made with gifts to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho and by specifying Ronald Wayne Hurt Memorial Scholarship in the memo line.

The Foundation was delighted to assist these Delta Chapter brothers in establishing this scholarship, which is an excellent reflection of upholding the Promise and Values of Alpha Gamma Rho (see page 4)!

I donate to AGR because it was my home for three years, because some of my brothers are still among my best friends 50 years later and I see them often, because I am still working in an agricultural field where I meet other AGRs almost every day, and because the cost of an education keeps rising and I would like other Ag students to have the opportunity that I had.

Donald De Jong, Cal Poly

Page 45: 2013-14 Growth Report - Higher Futures

As a first-generation college student, Donald De Jong didn’t know much about fraternities —and what he did know, he didn’t like. He only agreed to go through recruitment after some family friends showed him Alpha Gamma Rho as a way to solve a problem. De Jong knew after living in the dorm at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, he would need a more affordable place to live.

“My only knowledge of fraternities was what I had seen in the movies, and I really didn’t think it was for me,” De Jong said. “I was first sold on AGR because I was short on cash and living in the AGR house was the most economical place to live at Cal Poly. I was also told that if I became commissary house manager, I could have

free room and board. But I soon learned that AGR had a lot more to offer.”

De Jong spent the next three years as house manager, and with the help of his brothers, went on to become ASI (Associated Students, Inc.) Vice President his senior year. As house manager, De Jong learned invaluable lessons that still apply in his career. He is CEO of AgriVision Farm Management, and with his wife and business partner Cheri, they oversee the operation of two large-scale dairy farms and 35,000 irrigated acres of organic and conventional farmland in the Texas panhandle. The ability to manage time, budget and motivate people are skills he uses daily in order to make his many businesses successful.

De Jong’s humble beginnings are a

constant reminder to give back to current students. In addition to providing a memorable college experience, AGR gives young men the opportunity to gain leadership skills and learn about the agriculture industry as well as giving graduates a unique advantage as the begin their careers. Alumni play an important role in shaping young AGRs’ experiences as undergraduate members.

“I believe that we reap what we sow. If a brother has the resources to invest in the next generation, what a better and easier way?” says De Jong. “If my financial help allows for others to experience what I did, it’s money well spent.”

The Impact of giving

I believe that we reap what we sow. If a brother has the resources to invest in the next generation, what a better and easier way? If my financial help allows for others to experience what I did, it’s money well spent.

SUPPORTERSThe 2014 Bid for Better Men Auction benefiting the AGRconnect Capital Campaign was a huge success! Held during the 63rd Alpha Gamma Rho National Convention, attendees as well as brothers and friends of Alpha Gamma Rho near and far were able to bid in the silent auction using the mobile-bidding technology from AuctionsByCellular. The silent auction featured popular items such as a custom engraved Uberti/Winchester 1873 lever action rifle, a one-of-a-kind bottle of Gentleman Jack Limited Edition signed by the three living Jack Daniel’s Master Distillers and a Makers Mark faux barrel head plaque personalized with “Alpha Gamma Rho 1904.” A variety of regional items were also donated by undergraduate Chapters and alumni such as Iowa bacon, Vermont maple syrup, a western Kentucky picnic, a Maryland crab feast, a Wisconsin trio of cheese, sausage and beer, Kobe beef from Nebraska and an array of other items.

Highlights of the live auction included an Arkansas duck hunt donated by Tyler Gaskin and Beta Epsilon Chapter, a stained glass Alpha Gamma Rho Coat of Arms – replica of the one in the library of the Iota Chapter house, another custom engraved Uberti/Winchester 1873 lever action rifle, and a quilt featuring the Alpha Gamma Rho Brother’s Pin, which was hand-quilted by outgoing Grand President Arlen Wonderlich’s wife, Karlene. The bidding was exciting and helped kick off a tremendous evening celebrating the Hall of Fame inductees and the Alpha Gamma Rho’s top chapters, marking the conclusion of another wonderful convention.

Thank you to all the brothers and friends of Alpha Gamma Rho who helped make the Bid for Better Men Auction a success, either through your donation of an item or your own active bidding! Because of you, we netted approximately $25,000 that has been applied towards the AGRconnect Capital Campaign!

As a Chapter, we decided to donate to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho, knowing that the Foundation will continue to support the chapters around the nation for a common goal — to make better men, and through them a broader and better agriculture.

On behalf of the Investment Committee of Alpha Gamma Rho, it is my pleasure to update you on the positive financial outlook of The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho.

Contributed dollars come to the Foundation in many ways. Some, like contributions to the annual Loyalty Fund for AGR, are unrestricted and are used to support the ongoing educational programs of the Foundation. Others,

like contributions to AGRconnect or the Chapter Assistance Program, are restricted and must only be used for the donors specified purpose use.

Regardless of the intended use, pay-outs for the Foundation’s programs

typically take several years. Funds from an endowed scholarship might be the best example. This reality creates a pool of funds that can be invested without a concern for an immediate cash draw. Foundation dollars in that pool are invested in a broadly diversified portfolio that has as its goal to grow the corpus while minimizing the risk of a long-term market decline.

The investment process at Alpha Gamma Rho is managed by an Investment Policy Council (IPC) that sets the direction. This Council is composed of the Grand President, the Foundation President, the Housing Resources Trust President, the Executive Director and one “at large” member, typically an AGR leader with professional investment management experience. The Investment Committee, which I chair,

TRANSPARENCYiNVESTMENT PERFORMANCE is overseen by an Investment Committee led by Chairman Bill Boehm to implement the general policy and guidelines for the management of investment funds held by the Foundation. Asset information is courtesy of Merrill Lynch.

reports to the IPC and manages the investing activities. That Committee has four appointed members, and six additional members who serve “by position.” The appointed members typically have investment management experience and serve in this capacity for a number of years. This process has been in place since late 2006.

Well, how have we done?

Your Investment Committee continues to evaluate its progress compared to other portfolio performances. As you’ll note from the information included herein, our investments suffered along with everyone else’s in 2008 and 2009 but have rebounded with 5.6% return since the end of 2006. Further, our global-oriented position focused on a long-term investment strategy has been outperformed in the short-term compared to heavily

domestic portfolios. With that being said, we recognize our responsibility under the Prudent Man Rule and feel strongly that our philosophy of diversification focused on a ten year investment horizon strategy maximizes return and minimizes risks, ultimately providing security, stability, and support for the Foundation’s funds intended for the Fraternity’s programs.

We’re pleased with our progress, but we appreciate your investment in the Foundation ensuring the Fraternity will continue to “make better men.”

Fraternally,

William T BoehmChairmanAlpha Gamma Rho Investment Committee

stocks such as readily marketable securities are graciously accepted from brothers and friends of Alpha Gamma Rho as gifts to the Foundation. After consultation with appropriate counsel, non-publicly traded securities may also be accepted by the Foundation, and the Foundation would be happy to work with any prospective donor interested in exploring this gift option.

Commodities are a great way for Alpha Gamma Rho Brothers and friends who are in production agriculture to support The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho. The Foundation would be happy to assist you with making a gift of grain, other crops or livestock, which might be a more comfortable or convenient way to give back in lieu of writing a check. Although the process is simple, the impact is significant, and it may be a tax-advantage opportunity worth your consideration. With today’s high prices and positive economic outlook for the commodity markets, a charitable gift of grain or livestock to Alpha Gamma Rho is a timely tax-wise option.

I have found that making a gift is very comfortable and easy by donating grain at the elevator and then letting the organization sell it in their name.

Terry Nelson, Alpha Zeta

When legal ownership of a commodity is transferred to a charitable organization such as The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho before it is sold, significant tax savings may be achieved. The commodity won’t be realized as income to the donor, thus reducing their income tax burden. Additionally, the inputs and production costs of the commodity such as fertilizer or irrigation may be deducted, resulting in a savings of self-employment tax, state income tax and federal income tax.

Complete Your Gift in Five Simple Steps1. Inform The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho that you

intend to make a commodity gift and we’ll assist you with completing a pledge form.

2. Indicate on the form the quantity and type of grain being donated and return the form to the Foundation.

3. Deliver the grain to your local elevator or co-op. 4. Request that a storage receipt be issued in the name of The Educational

Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho and that the contract to sell the grain be sent to the Foundation for signature.

5. The check for the sale of the grain will be issued directly to The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho.

Please consult your tax or legal professional prior to making your gift to determine the most effective way to manage your taxes and support The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho.

HOW WE COMPAREtHE STATE OF OUR INDUSTRY was recently presented at THE Foundations Seminar, a program of the North-American Interfraternity Conference Foundation (NICF), by Pennington & Company, a Lawrence, Kansas, based fundraising counsel specializing in Greek-letter organizations. The report, focusing on fraternity and sorority foundations, was compiled through Pennington’s own research of data from IRS Form 990s and information available at www.guidestar.org. They identified three metrics for measuring foundation performance: Fundraising Ratio, Fundraising Efficiency Ratio and Program Services Ratio. Below are the rankings based on a five year (2008-2012) average. The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho was positioned far better than the standard for each metric.

The Educational Foundation of Alpha Gamma Rho recently received an NICF Award of Distinction for Best Development Effort in an Annual Campaign recognizing the 2013-14 Loyalty Fund for AGR: Giving for Our Purpose. Submissions were judged based upon explanation of the annual campaign effort, growth or change resulting from the effort, cost per dollar raised, participation rate, dollars pledged vs dollars received, all costs associated with the effort, how the effort is in alignment with the organization’s mission and solicitation material samples.

Development Specialist Stasia Sherman and Director of Development Brad Garrison with the NICF Award of Distinction for Best Development Effort in an Annual Campaign.
