THE GIFT OF OPPORTUNITY

Page 2: 2013-14 Report to Donors

Our University is more globally connected than ever.

Page 3: 2013-14 Report to Donors

or the University of Regina to continue educating the next generation of leaders in our province, it takes the energy, commitment and support of thousands of caring people each year. 2013-14 was a perfect example of that, and once again, donors like you played a critical role in our success.

Without question, your generous contributions through-out the year helped take us to new heights – and in new directions. You established many scholarships and awards that have helped make a university education more accessible for students from Saskatchewan and around the world, for example. You supported mentoring programs for Aboriginal students, contributed to our female coaching fellowship program, and provided support for the Psychology Training Clinic in the Faculty of Arts. You even donated a world-class piano to support the revitalization of Darke Hall. And that only scratches the surface of your generosity.

Your support has contributed a great deal toward the momentum we have seen at the University of Regina in recent years. The 2013-14 academic year marked our fifth consecutive year of increased student numbers, and the third straight year of record enrolments. An increasing number of Aboriginal and international

students studied at our University, making it more diverse, representative of our province, and globally connected than at any time in its history. With a new residence building and day care facility under construction and scheduled for completion in the fall of 2015, we continued planning for the future by developing the infrastructure and supports required by our students.

While we focused on the future throughout the year, you can be assured that we didn’t lose sight of our roots. Over the course of 2013-14, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of our University’s becoming an independent, degree-granting institution in 1974. As part of those celebrations, with your support we made considerable progress toward preserving and revitalizing our historic College Avenue campus through Building Knowledge – The College Avenue Campus Renewal Project.

In this Report to Donors, our students say it best when they speak from the heart about what it means to be provided with new opportunities as a result of gifts like yours. You are making a difference in the lives of these students, and in the educational life of our province and world. On behalf of the entire University of Regina community, thank you for choosing to make that difference!

The Gift of Balance

“ For some of us students, life throws us somecurve balls while in university. It can get difficult balancing our studies with providing for our families. The scholarships and bursaries I have received have made a huge impact on me. Not only have they alleviated my financial worries and given me the opportunity to focus more energy on my studies, but they have also encouraged me to persevere and excel as I can feel the support of the donors with me. Thank you for your dedication and generosity.”

“The Agnes Stephanson Cooke award allowed me to work less, leaving more time to spend with my family and focus on my studies. I was also able to coach for the Tyke and Peewee divisions in the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Minor Lacrosse Association thanks to the award. Thank you.”

BUILDING KNOWLEDGE: THE COLLEGE AVENUE CAMPUS RENEWAL PROJECT

During 2013-14, numerous donations have helped in ongoing efforts of bringing back a historic jewel: the College Avenue campus. We are revitalizing, preserving the spirit and re-affirming the place of the campus at the heart of teaching and learning in Regina. Building Knowledge – The College Avenue Renewal Project is our top capital priority. Once complete, it will see the College Building, Conservatory and Darke Hall sustainably refurbished and repositioned as the University of Regina Leadership and Outreach Centre (LOC).

The LOC will continue to support our academic mission, blending a new Executive Education Centre (used primarily by students from our Johnson-Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy and the to-be-expanded Centre for Continuing Education), smart classrooms and lecture rooms, performance space and event/reception area that enhances the site’s heritage and opens the doors wide to the community.

Business and professional development, credit, distance learning, English as a Second Language and Lifelong Learning Centre courses and programs all will be offered at the LOC, as will music and other events.

FROM PAST TO PRESENT

4

“ Contributing to the exciting revitalization of this historic campus helps to ensure it will be here to serve the needs of future generations. We are proud to be part of this important community effort.”

- Paul & Debbie McLellan

Grad Studies: More than 50 Master’s degree programs, 18 Doctoral programs, 1 Post-Graduate Diploma, and 9 certificate programs!

The Gift of Research

“This opportunity has greatly assisted me in my ability to continue my study on identifying pre- and post-concussion variables that influence recovery from a concussion and management approaches that can optimize an individual’s return to the pre-injury level of function and performance. The fellowship has enabled me to continue furthering my studies while relieving the stress of finances as a PhD student. I have been able to commit my time to research and data collection that I otherwise would not have been able to do without the support of the Groome Family Fellowship in Health Research and I am so grateful for this opportunity. Thank you.”

Page 9: 2013-14 Report to Donors

The support of our entire community is essential as we prepare the knowledgeable graduates Saskatchewan needs.

“To say that I’m grateful would be an understatement when it comes to how I feel about receiving such a wonderful scholarship. Not only does it help relieve some financial pressure, it also reminds me that the arts are not forgotten by those who have ventured beyond the grasp of the dreaded ‘Well, what are you going to do with that?’ bachelor’s degree. And most of all, it reminds me that creativity is still an essential and valuable asset to more than those whom I force (ahem... I mean to whom I give the pleasure) to read my short stories and other literary works. Thank you so much Ken Mitchell and family – your generous donation is more than appreciated.”

The Gift of Discovery

The Gift of Inspiration

“As a child, going to EYES camp was one of the highlights of every summer as it provided a space for me to explore my love of Science and Engineering. Now I’ve come full circle as I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science in Psychology as well as holding the title of Assistant Coordinator of the EYES program. I am so thankful to be a part of an amazing program that is close to my heart and to have the opportunity to spark the curiosity of the Scientists and Engineers of the future!”Jordan Nixdorf. EYES Participant, Regina

“My son and daughter have both attended EYES camp every summer since they were old enough to register (my son is now too old to attend). They look forward to this camp every year and has been the only camp they consistently attend. My son was always interested in science and computers, so the camp was a natural fit. My daughter is much more interested in the arts, so I wasn’t sure if she would enjoy the camp. She has discovered that science and the arts are not so different – they are very active and participatory activities. She now wants to be a scientist who sings and dances.”Laura Rathgaber, Parent of EYES Participants, Regina

The University of Regina’s Nitôncipâmin Omâ (“We are Here”) Student Success Program is highly effective in helping Aboriginal students make a successful transition to post-secondary study.

Great teachers are also great learners. Your investments take teaching to an even higher level – for students and faculty alike.

Expanding horizons. The Hill School and Levene Graduate School of Business offer programs that prepare students to lead through critical reflection, personal connection, and consideration for the global community.
