The University of Lethbridge is illuminated by opportunity. It is the spark of potential in every incoming student; the passion of every distinguished researcher, teacher and dedicated staff member; the radiance exuded by more than 40,000 alumni worldwide; and the support of those who share our vision.

1

Dear Donors,

On behalf of the University community, it is with sincere appreciation we present to you the 2015 Report to Donors.

This year’s report includes just a small sampling of the extraordinary individuals who have helped shape our university this year. From supporting our students, advancing knowledge, creating new programs and opportunities, and building campus — you, our donors, have played an integral role in making our university, one of Canada’s leading universities and research institutions. Because of you, our students think beyond the boundaries of our campus and are intent on being the leaders of tomorrow. Our faculty members cultivate innovative solutions, and our more than 40,000 alumni are making important contributions in communities around the globe. This is just the beginning for our university. In 2017, we will celebrate the University’s 50th anniversary. A time to celebrate our past and all we have accomplished together, this golden milestone is most importantly a time to look to our next 50 years.

The Destination Project continues to move forward and will shape the future of our university and southern Alberta. We will introduce new research Chairs, such as the Chair in Commodities Risk Management, expand our research reach and transform ideas into outcomes. New scholarships, like the Dr. Leskiw Memorial Scholarship, will help our students reach their academic goals and set them on course to create a better tomorrow.

Thank you for your belief in education and research, and your generous support of the University of Lethbridge. We are proving that together people really do shine brighter.

Sincerely,

Mike Mahon, PhDPresident and Vice-Chancellor

The University of Lethbridge was established to increase opportunities for students in southern Alberta to obtain a

world-class education. That founding principle remains true today, and thanks to donor support, we are able to make a

university degree a reality for even more students.

Planting seeds for the future

In a small shop in southern Saskatchewan, Dr. Cor Van Raay (LLD ’15) came across a sign that neatly sums up his approach to business: if you find a job you like, you’ll never work a day in your life.

“Whatever you choose to do should be fun at least 80 per cent of the time,” Van Raay says, reinforcing the mantra above. “The other 20 per cent of the time it will be hard work.”

It’s that balance between a passion for agribusiness and a strong work ethic that has established Van Raay as one of the area’s leading agricultural innovators and entrepreneurs. Originally from Holland, Van Raay began farming in Iron Springs, Alta., 50 years ago with a half-section of cropland and a small herd of Holstein cattle. Since then, he has built one of the largest and most successful cattle production and feedlot operations in the country.

“Dig deep and get the work done,” advises Van Raay, who remains very hands-on in the day-to-day operations of Cor Van Raay Farms. “I never set out to be the biggest operation, it just never occurred to me to stop growing. In fact, it still hasn’t; even today I know I can do more.”

Luckily for southern Alberta, that passion is not confined to borders of his own farmstead. Van Raay’s vision is a future where agriculture and agribusiness, enterprises on which the southern Alberta economy were established, continue to be an attractive career option for young people. To that end, early in 2015, he

gave the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College $5 million to jointly establish the Cor Van Raay Southern Alberta Agribusiness Program. Designed to provide leading-edge training in agribusiness practices, the program will focus on agricultural economics, entrepreneurship, innovation and ensuring students have a solid understanding of business and management. In addition, he has funded a number of scholarships at the University, including the Cor Van Raay AGILITY Scholarship in Agriculture and Agribusiness, and two Faculty of Management scholarships, including one that was created in memory of his late wife, Christine, who passed away in 2006.

“Education is not only important, it’s necessary,” says Van Raay, who had limited opportunities in Holland but did pursue night classes here in Canada. “That’s the reason I give to education. I believe it’s important regardless of what you choose to do in life.”

Accepting his honorary degree at Fall Convocation last year, Van Raay encouraged graduates to pave their own way forward, using their experience, their interests and, most importantly, their education to guide them to a fulfilling career.

“Fear regrets, not failure,” Van Raay warned. “Do something you’re passionate about and have fun every day.”

As someone for whom farming is not only a business but a way of life, it’s clear Van Raay is doing just that.

“Education is not only important, it’s necessary.

That’s the reason I give to education.”

Engineering the future

The future of engineering at the University of Lethbridge could look very different thanks to the support of industry and the southern Alberta community.

After being offered at the U of L for more than 30 years, the Pre-Professional Transfer Program in Engineering underwent a curriculum review and realignment in 2013. When the program relaunched in 2015, it was met with an overwhelming response from students and industry alike, with more than double the applications for the available spaces.

Local engineers, Mark Bellamy, P. Eng. (senior principal at Stantec Consulting Ltd.), Ron Hust, P. Eng. (chief executive officer of MPE Engineering), Vivien Kossuth, P. Eng. (independent mechanical consultant) and Olivier Lefebvre, P. Eng. (general manager of Plant 32 for Pratt & Whitney Canada), are standing together to show their support of the program.

Bellamy and Kossuth are part of the initial advisory committee of industry professionals who are helping to shape the future of the program. In addition to lending their professional support to the program, all four have backed it

with finances and created a variety of student awards and scholarships.

“Pratt & Whitney is very excited to establish a leadership award that will support students and promote engineering, science and technology to students at a very young age,” says Lefebvre.

For Kossuth, supporting and inspiring the next generation of engineers, particularly female engineers, is a top priority.

“Being a woman in engineering is not easy. It has its challenges but it definitely has its rewards,” she says. “I believe that supporting women in engineering, retaining them and advancing them in their careers is definitely about leadership — and it’s leadership by everyone.”

Support for the program is quickly growing. There are now 10 awards specifically for engineering transfer students in addition to new program support. Frances Schultz came forward in 2015 to honour her late husband, Dr. Arvid Schultz, who was one of the founders of the original program more than three decades ago. The funding will be used to further advance the program.

“When a small group of highly interested and motivated students is exposed to the wealth of knowledge and experience possessed by a practicing professional, the results are transformational for the student. We are so grateful to the many engineers who have supported the program and who have shared their expertise and experiences.”

In fact, the interest in engineering within the local community and the community of professional engineers has been so overwhelming that discussions regarding the introduction of a full four-year engineering program at the U of L are now taking place.

Again, Bellamy and Kossuth are at the forefront and are part of an advisory committee working with faculty members and administrators, including Dan Furgason, associate Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, as the University looks to grow its professional programs.

“There is tremendous opportunity for a four-year engineering program at the U of L,” says Bellamy, who went through the transfer program in 1984. “Currently, approximately 80 per cent of eligible students aren’t able to get into an engineering program in Alberta. Couple that

with the potential of tying engineering with existing U of L programs and it’s incredibly exciting.”

In addition to meeting students’ needs, an engineering program in southern Alberta will be advantageous to the entire profession, says Hust.

“With only two engineering programs in Alberta, we have trouble attracting engineers to smaller communities,” he says. “Hopefully, having a four-year engineering program in Lethbridge will help us attract engineers to stay in the city.”

While the task ahead may seem daunting, Bellamy is quick to go back to the U of L’s founders. “Just think about the community leaders who believed Lethbridge needed a university in the early 1960s and all they were able to accomplish.”

In less than 50 years, the University of Lethbridge has built an outstanding record of research performance, and is one of Canada’s leading research institutions. Thanks to donor support, our faculty and students are bringing new light to problems and possibilities. The results of these efforts extend well beyond campus and impact communities across Alberta and around the world.

The University of Lethbridge’s Westcastle Field Station was, by all accounts, an untapped resource. It made perfect sense then when Shell Canada, a world leader in resource extraction, served as the catalyst for a redevelopment project that has created opportunities for expanded research, student training and community outreach initiatives for years to come.

The new Westcastle Field Station now fully represents the ideal of the University’s founders, who leased the five-acre tract of land at the foot of the Rocky Mountains when the U of L was just in its infancy. Their prescient thinking, to fully utilize the University’s unique geographic setting and establish a base for research activities and environmental stewardship in one of the world’s most pristine settings, can now be fully realized.

“There was always the view that we really wanted to improve this facility so that we could make the most of its outstanding location and the research opportunities it provided,” says Dr. Stewart Rood, a faculty member in the Department of Biology. “Now we have a field station that will allow for those activities.”

Established in the University’s initial days, the original field station was constructed in 1970 on a five-acre parcel of land in Castle Provincial Park, just five kilometres from Castle Mountain Ski Resort. It began with a pre-fabricated wood cabin with adjacent wooden pads for canvas tents that were meant to serve as dormitories.

Over the years, safety (bears aren’t easily deterred by canvas) and practicality (generators were replaced with line electricity) led to a number of changes to the site. An ATCO-style trailer was added as a lab to free up dorm space in the cabin and eventually various trailers and campers made their way on-site to meet space demands

— but they were all seen as stop-gap measures.“We saw an opportunity to be involved in creating long-term, sustainable infrastructure that would benefit both the community in and around Waterton and also those who conduct research in the Castle,” says Ryan C. Smith, senior environmental planner with Shell Canada. “These types of opportunities are very important to us.”

With help from a $100,000 Shell Canada donation, the field station now features a second building (Shell Dormitory), accommodates 23 beds and three bathrooms, an expanded kitchen facility, increased lab space, exterior storage, new water storage, a fire-alarm system and better road access. The end result is a station that can now host numerous students and researchers and has the capacity for community outreach initiatives.

“We’ve been running field courses in geography, environmental science and biology that were dispersed and scattered around because we had no core facility,” says Rood. “Now we have a viable field station in a prime and accessible location.”

It is a base that lends itself to creating meaningful learning experiences for students.

“If you asked my students a decade after they graduate what they remember, a high proportion of them will remember the field experiences,” says Rood. “Ironically, it’s a very inefficient way to get content across. It’s much easier to present bullet points on a screen in a classroom but those lessons don’t become embedded in the students, they don’t really become a part of who they are. To actually go out and see something and discover its natural place is invaluable.”

There’s a calming air to her very presence. A warmth that soothes your soul, making you feel welcome, cared for, seen.

Dr. Wendy Takeda has devoted her life and career to her patients, their well-being, and to advancing the field of alternative health care and the science behind it.

An acupuncturist and traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, Takeda is the owner of Elements Physical Therapy and Acupuncture Ltd., a thriving and highly respected clinic in Lethbridge. Her practice is full, and she helps thousands of people each year. Although the hours are long and the days are full, the work energizes Takeda.

“My patients inspire me,” she says. “They make me want to do better. I work hard because of them, and when they feel better, I feel better.”

After completing her undergraduate degree in physical therapy at the University of Alberta in 1987, she went on to complete a master of science (researching the effectiveness of medical acupuncture) in 1992 and a doctorate in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine in 1998. She became a partner in a local physiotherapy clinic in 1993 then opened her own practice in 2001. Today, Takeda is considered a pioneer of acupuncture in Lethbridge; she was one of the first to bring this Eastern practice to southern Alberta.

“Looking back, being a graduate student was a difficult time and it was very hard to get funding, particularly in the field of alternative health,” she recalls. “And I think it’s even more difficult for students today,” she says.

A healer at heart, it’s a concern Takeda is working to help remedy. Already a long-time supporter of the University of Lethbridge, in 2015 she created the Elements Physical Therapy & Acupuncture Award, which will be given annually to two graduate-level students in health sciences beginning next fall.

“I hope the award will help more students be able to pursue a career in alternative or complementary medicine,” she says. “In turn, I hope it helps those students educate the community on the important role alternative health plays in conjunction with Western medicine.”

In addition to supporting the next generation of practitioners, Takeda is turning to science to help build evidence for acupuncture to become part of the mainstream health-care system and increase accessibility.

She’s teamed up with Dr. Brenda Leung, an assistant professor in Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Emmy Droog Chair in Complementary and Alternative Health Care (CAHC) at the U of L. Together, they are embarking upon a new study to investigate the use of acupuncture for treating anxiety in children and adolescents.

“Over recent years, I’ve seen this segment of my practice grow and I’ve been effectively treating more and more children for anxiety with acupuncture, which calms the limbic systems,” Takeda explains.

The study, which is supported by the 2015 Canadian CAM Research Fund, will enable Takeda and Leung to systemically collect data and substantiate these findings.

“Being able to collaborate with Dr. Takeda provides a key connection to people in the community and to address their questions, concerns and issues,” says Leung. “Today’s research must consider diverse perspectives, including academics, clinicians and patients. This is especially true for nonconventional practices like acupuncture, where practitioners have not been included in the past. This collaboration between the U of L and Dr. Takeda will set an example for how (CAHC) practitioners can get involved in research.”

For Takeda, it’s simply the next step on a lifelong journey, a journey to improve her patients’ entire well-being — physically, emotionally and mentally — through the science of acupuncture.

“I hope the award will help more students be able to pursue a career in alternative or complementary medicine.”

“I truly believe that music can change a life forever because that is what it has done for me.”

Those are the words of the late Josh Burton, a young man whose heart was full of music and who was loved by all who met him.

A musician, a composer, a humanitarian, Josh passed away tragically after a vehicle accident in Guatemala in 2013, just a few months away from the end of his two-year mission through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was 23 years old.

To honour him, Josh’s uncle and aunt — Dr. Wayne Burton (BSc ’97) and Jasmine Burton — established the Josh Burton Memorial Award at the University of Lethbridge in 2015. The award will help U of L music students establish their careers in music.

“Josh was always a very energetic and driven young man; he was a great person to be around. He had a lot of friends wherever he lived,” Wayne lovingly remembers. “He was, among other things, a great musician. He played piano; he studied the different classical composers but very much wanted to take it and run with it himself. He composed a lot of music himself and eventually recorded an album that I helped him with.”

A physician and an accomplished inspirational musician, Wayne obtained a Bachelor of Science at the University of Lethbridge before he completed medical school at the University of Utah. As he and Jasmine were both raised in southern Alberta, they returned and made Lethbridge their home. When they considered supporting a U of L scholarship program, they immediately recalled Josh’s love of music.

“We thought it was really fitting to have Josh be recognized because he certainly was a learner,”

says Wayne. “He didn’t do a formal university music program but he was always just soaking it up whenever he could.”

Music and education are two strong themes in the Burton family. Josh shared a love of music with Wayne and with his father, Allan. Josh’s mother Heather (BEd ’89) is a strong supporter of learning in all its forms.

U of L student Logan Amon was the first to receive the Josh Burton Memorial Award. For Logan, the award has helped him pursue his own passion for music. “I am so grateful to be a recipient of the award,” he says. “It is a great honour to be awarded in the memory of someone who was so talented in music and devoted to serving others.”

In 2011, Josh had said: “If people can listen to my music and walk away considering themselves better off for having heard it, then I would consider myself a successful artist.”

Although Josh’s life was cut far too short, his words and his music live on. He will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Community builder

Playing professional hockey was a boyhood dream for the late Harry Cox. Growing up in the small town of Plunkett, Sask., in the late 1920s and ’30s, he put those dreams aside and went to work to help provide for his mother and siblings after his father had passed away. Although Harry’s personal hockey ambitions were never fully realized, his impact on the game and his community was exponential.

In the 1950s, Harry and his wife Mildred moved to Lethbridge where they raised their family (two sons, Brad and Geoff, and a daughter, Karen), and Harry began a remarkable career in the insurance industry. He worked for London Life for 37 years and his sons went on to established Cox Financial Group, which today is a third-generation family business in Lethbridge. But this is just the beginning of Harry’s legacy.

“Harry really loved Lethbridge,” Mildred recalls. “He wanted to see Lethbridge grow, and he wanted to help make that happen.”

The Lethbridge Y’s Men, the Lethbridge Community Foundation, the United Way and the University of Lethbridge Board of Governors are just a few of the organizations Harry devoted time to.

“Dad was a community builder,” says Brad. “He helped bring the Canada Winter Games to Lethbridge in 1975, he helped raise the capital for the Lethbridge Sportsplex and the Lethbridge YMCA. He was a real behind-the-scenes kind of guy who made things happen.”

Throughout the years, Harry’s love for hockey never faded. In fact, his passion for the game gave focus to his efforts.

In the 1970s, Harry assisted in bringing a Junior B League to Lethbridge and he was co-owner of the Junior A Lethbridge Longhorns franchise for a year. Then in the early ’80s, he played a key role in establishing the men’s Pronghorns hockey program at the U of L.

“Although there were a number of individuals who worked to achieve the goal of a hockey program, in my view,

Harry was the driving force behind it and its ultimate achievement,” says Jerry LeGrandeur, who was on the U of L Board of Governors with Harry at the time. “He was tenacious in his efforts and his enthusiasm was contagious. As I look back, I think it unlikely that the hockey program would have happened as soon as it did without Harry’s commitment and effort.”

In addition to personally donating to the initiative, Harry also gave his time and helped raise the funds to get the program started.

“Dad supported the hockey program because that is where his heart was,” says Brad.

In 1983, the Horns took to the ice. The team won a national title in 1994, sparking the career of coach Mike Babcock, and over the last three decades, has graduated education, business, community and industry leaders alike.

“Because Dad never had the opportunity for a post-secondary education, being on the Board and establishing the men’s hockey program was a real highlight for him,” says Geoff. “He also really believed that hockey was a way to connect the University with the community.”

Over the years, Harry and the Cox family remained strong supporters of the Horns and the University. “We’d often have the players over for dinner and BBQs,” recalls Mildred. “And even after Harry became ill with Parkinson’s disease, he’d still be at the rink.”

The Cox family is a long-time supporter of student scholarships; Harry even directed a life insurance policy to the men’s hockey team with a scholarship. They also support Parkinson’s research at the U of L.

In 2014, Harry passed away. While his presence is greatly missed at Nicholas Sheran Arena — the Home of the Horns — his vision lives on. It is carried in the hearts of the players who proudly wear the U of L’s blue and gold; the fans who cheer them on; and the community that stands together.

The University of Lethbridge stands as it does today

because a dedicated group of community leaders

and supporters believed southern Alberta warranted

its own university.

In less than 50 years, the University of Lethbridge has evolved from an idea to one of Canada’s top-ranked universities and leading research institutions.

Our campus, which was once just a small corner on the Lethbridge Junior College campus, now spans 500 acres and has shaped Lethbridge’s west side. We boast world-renowned researchers and educators; state-of-the-art facilities; approximately 8,400 students each year; nearly 1,200 employees; a $1.1-billion economic impact on our province; and more 40,000 alumni who are – literally – changing the world.

This is just the beginning.

On the eve of our 50th anniversary, we are looking to the future. A future that is possible because of you.

Sparking innovation

“To be an entrepreneur, you have to be open-minded

and willing to take a risk,” says local business leader and

University of Lethbridge alumnus Bruce McKillop (BASc (BA)

’70). “But — you have to be smart. You have to be inquisitive.

You have to think things through. And you have to be able to

execute on your idea.”

After spending the last four decades in business in Lethbridge,

you could say that being an entrepreneur is in Bruce’s

blood. His father, Charles (Bud) McKillop, was the founder of

McKillop Insurance & Registry. Bruce’s daughter (and fellow

U of L alumnus) Sonya McKillop (BMgt ’01) followed in their

footsteps and is currently at the company’s helm as president,

making McKillop Insurance & Registry a third-generation

family business.

Having set his roots in Lethbridge, Bruce says supporting local

initiatives is one way he gives back to the community that

helped him along the way. When the U of L launched AGILITY

last spring, Bruce was one of the first to step forward and

show his support for the program and his alma mater.

“Lethbridge wouldn’t be the same without the university,” he

says. “Both the university and the college keep the community

young, and I truly believe we will change the world through

education.”

A new university-wide initiative, AGILITY has been designed

to nurture and support innovation and entrepreneurism

among U of L students on both the Lethbridge and Calgary

campuses.

Through AGILITY, students will learn about innovative thinking

and developing ideas from renowned faculty and leaders in

the business and social innovation community. They will have

the opportunity to work in a cross-disciplinary environment

and have the space, tools and mentorship to bring their ideas

to life.

“That’s the beauty of AGILITY,” he says. “Students will

learn about entrepreneurism and risk-taking in a supportive

environment that is strongly grounded in liberal education,

and when they graduate, they will be ahead of the game.”

Bruce says his liberal education gave him the skills he needed

to succeed in business, and is quick to add that supporting

AGILITY and tomorrow’s entrepreneurs, “is a no-brainer.”

“There are unlimited possibilities,” he says.

“This is the beginning of something significant for our

university.”

“I truly believe we will change the world through education.”

Imagining possibilities

Since the University of Lethbridge first announced the Destination Project in 2013, we’ve said: “We’re imagining possibilities; we are being bold in our thinking; we are thinking about science not for today, but 50 years from now.”

One visionary donor, alumnus Dr. Michael Fiorino (BSc ’78), a medical doctor in Edmonton, Alta., began imagining possibilities long before.

On a note clipped to a donation cheque to the U of L, Fiorino included this message: “Direct this to where it matters most. Personally, I would like it to go towards a science building fund.”

The year was 2004.

“As a U of L student, I saw the original concept model of University Hall, which extended north well beyond

where it is today,” says Fiorino. “I remember thinking how much the students and faculty members would benefit from the devoted space, and how a science facility would advance research at the University and really benefit the entire community.”

Today, a new Science and Academic Building is moving from imagination to reality. The 36,000 square metre building is well into the design phase and the future is beginning to take shape.

The new Science and Academic Building will be a place for community engagement and outreach; a place with innovation laboratories where undergraduate and graduate research opportunities develop; where knowledge moves from the lab to industry; a place that fosters the next generation of researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and leaders.

24

25

A key theme guiding the planning process is transdisciplinary research and collaboration.

“We are envisioning scientists and researchers working together to share resources and expertise outside of their traditional disciplines to achieve a common scientific goal,” explains Dr. Craig Cooper, dean of the Faculty of Arts & Science. “Research benefits from different perspectives, different approaches. Students learn from and appreciate the value of work done by other disciplines, creating well-rounded individuals. It benefits students and researchers by allowing them to place their work in a greater context.”

The new Science and Academic Building will allow faculty to more easily incorporate modern teaching methodologies into evolving curriculums. It aims to

enhance and support entrepreneurship through the training of students in leading-edge teaching and research laboratories and will provide high quality space to foster industry collaboration and potentially the development of new companies.

The project will be transformational, the largest construction project to take place on campus since the original construction of University Hall. It will shape the future of the University of Lethbridge and southern Alberta for generations to come.

Imagine the possibilities — yes. And now we are working to make them a reality.

In the 1960s, the community united to establish a university in southern Alberta.

In 2017, the U of L will turn 50, and it will be a time for us to come together and celebrate all we have accomplished over the last five decades. It’s also a time to join our collective efforts once again and advance the future of our University, our city and our province.

Celebrating 50 yearsStay up to date on the latest 50th anniversary news and help us plan a year of celebrations. Send us your event, story and initiative ideas, or volunteer to help at one of the many events!
