The Cardinal swept last year’s season series for the fi rst ti me since 2008, winning 69-59 at home and 83-70 in Berkeley. This marks the third ti me in fi ve years Stanford and California are squaring off in the Pac-12 opener.

Notable Career Totals Against CaliforniaDwight Powell and Chasson Randle have enjoyed success, as both players are shooti ng exactly 26-58 (44.8 percent) from the fi eld. Powell has compiled that total in seven career matchups, averaging 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds while his 74 points against the Golden Bears are the most against any Pac-12 foe. Randle’s off ensive producti on has come over fi ve career games, averaging 15.8 points while his 14 assists are the most against any league foe. Stefan Nasti c has scored more points against Cal (11) than any other Pac-12 opponent.

Stanford In Conference OpenersStanford is 4-6 in conference openers over the last 10 seasons. Prior to last year’s 71-69 loss at USC, the Cardinal had won its last two Pac-12 lid-lift ers. Stanford’s most recent victory in a conference opener was a 60-59 win over UCLA at Maples Pavilion on Dec. 29, 2011. Since the 1978-79 campaign, Stanford is 18-17 in conference openers (13-6 home, 5-11 away).

Projected Sixth In Pac-12 Preseason PollStanford was picked to fi nish sixth in the 2013-14 Pac-12 preseason media poll. Last year, the Cardinal was projected to fi nish fourth but ti ed for sixth at 9-9.

The Anne and Tony JosephDirector of Men’s Basketball Johnny DawkinsOverall Record: 103-77 (6th yr.)At Stanford: 103-77 (6th yr.)

Johnny Dawkins’ contributi ons sincearriving on The Farm have come in the form of team and individual success, most notably guiding the Cardinal to the 2012 Postseason NIT championship.

Meanwhile, aft er leading Stanford to a 20-win season for the 20th ti me in school history in 2008-09, Dawkins oversaw Landry Fields’ progression from key reserve to all-league performer and eventual NBA Draft pick.

Dawkins has also made signifi cant strides off the court, with several highly-touted recruiti ng classes yielding some of the nati on’s elite players. More impressively, that same young talent is being developed quickly. In 2012, Chasson Randle became the fourth player to earn All-Freshman Team status among conference players during Dawkins’ tenure following a six-year pe-riod in which only two Cardinal rookies were honored.

High standards in the classroom have also been estab-lished. In 2012-13, Stanford was represented with a league-best seven players named to the Pac-12 All-Ac-ademic team. For the fourth season in a row, Stanford had more honorees than any conference school.

Stanford fi nished 19-15 overall last year, advancing to the NIT second round. The Cardinal fi nished 9-9 in the Pac-12, sweeping the season series against California for the fi rst ti me since 2008 and notching a 76-52 upset of No. 10/12 Oregon at Maples Pavilion.

Stanford produced a 26-11 record in 2011-12 en route to capturing the Postseason NIT ti tle, the third cham-pionship in school history. The Cardinal chalked up its best win total since a 28-8 campaign in 2007-08. Stan-ford was the Pac-12’s winningest program and tallied a league-best four victories against the RPI’s top-50.

The Cardinal wrapped up the 2010-11 season at 15-16, fi elding a team without a senior for the fi rst ti me in school history. Stanford fi nished 14-18 during the 2009-10 campaign, Dawkins’ second year at the helm.

In 2008-09, Dawkins directed Stanford to a 20-14 record and reached the CBI semifi nals. In additi on to surpassing Robert Burnett as the winningest fi rst-year head coach in school history, Dawkins ranked third in victories among the 21 fi rst-year head coaches in Divi-sion I with no prior college head coaching experience.

Dawkins, 50, became Stanford’s 17th head coach on Apr. 28, 2008, aft er 11 years as a member of the Duke coaching staff . For the previous nine seasons (2000-08), Dawkins served as Duke’s associate head coach and began his coaching career as an assistant in 1998-99. During Dawkins’ 11 years at Duke, the Blue Devils won the 2001 NCAA championship, six ACC regular season crowns and seven ACC Tournament ti tles.

Dawkins fi nished his career in 1986 as the school’s all-ti me leading scorer. Dawkins was a two-ti me fi rst team All-ACC performer in 1985 and 1986 as well as the school’s fi rst consensus two-ti me, fi rst team All-American. As a senior, he was tabbed ACC Tournament MVP while also becoming the fi rst Naismith Player of the Year recipient in school history.

Defense Catching Up With The Off enseOnce a weakness, Stanford’s defense has improved greatly since the start of the year. The Cardinal has used its considerable size advantage to force opponents into diffi cult looks and obstruct passing lanes. Stanford’s play during the month of December served as the perfect example, with all fi ve opponents held to 68 points or fewer and a 53-51 road upset of No. 10/10 Connecti cut serving as the signature win.

Starti ng Five Has Been Impressive Head coach Johnny Dawkins has employed a starti ng lineup of Chasson Randle, Anthony Brown, Josh Huesti s, Dwight Powell and Stefan Nasti c in every game, his longest stretch since sti cking with the same fi ve for the fi nal 17 contests of last year. It’s easy to see why, as Stanford boasts an experienced starti ng fi ve capable of reaching double digits every ti me out. All four starters with the excepti on of Nasti c (8.8 ppg) are averaging double-fi gure scoring. That being said, the Cardinal must fi nd a way to jump-start its bench.

Off ense Has Been ClickingStanford has excelled off ensively through the fi rst 12 games, reaching the 70-point plateau eight ti mes and shooti ng at least 50.0 percent in six games. Also, the Cardinal is ranked 25th nati onally in fi eld goal percentage and 15th in three-point fi eld goal percentage. It’s a sharp contrast to last year’s early-season struggles.

Frequent FlyersStanford traveled 14,591 miles during non-conference play. Aft er visiti ng Denver (2,584 miles round trip), the Cardinal embarked on the fi rst of two trips to Brooklyn (5,896 miles round trip) one week later. One month later, Stanford fl ew to Hartf ord (3,043 miles one-way) before arriving in Brooklyn (120 miles one-way) via bus the next day. The fi nal leg home from Brooklyn (2,948 miles one-way) completed one of the more grueling non-league swings in Division I.

No. 10 UConn Win Highlights Non-Conference PlayStanford upset No. 10/10 Connecti cut 53-51 on Dec. 18 in Hartf ord, notching its fi rst road win over a top-10 team since edging No. 9/9 Washington State 67-65 in overti me on Feb. 2, 2008. Trailing 43-30 four minutes into the second half, Stanford limited Connecti cut to just 5-31 (16.1 percent) shooti ng over the fi nal 20 minutes. Connecti cut had won 54 straight home games against non-conference foes dati ng back to 2007. Chasson Randle scored a game-high 22 points while Dwight Powell posted a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Home Sweet HomeStanford is 70-24 at home under head coach Johnny Dawkins. Stanford has reached the 10-win mark at Maples Pavilion for 20 consecuti ve seasons and is 6-1 on its home court so far.

Randle Returns To Form Of Rookie YearChasson Randle appears to have put last year’s struggles behind and is performing at a similar level to 2011-12, when he produced one of the best rookie seasons in school history. Randle is averaging a team-high 18.7 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooti ng 51.4 percent from the fi eld and 80.8 percent from the foul line. His numbers from beyond the arc are also steadily improving, now up to 43.4 percent. Randle has also scored in double fi gures 11 ti mes, including a career-high 33-point outi ng against BYU on Nov. 11. Over his last four games, Randle is averaging 19.0 points while shooti ng 12-20 from beyond the arc and 22-27 from the foul line.

Powell Displays Dynamic All-Around GameA proven scorer and rebounder, Dwight Powell is averaging 14.3 points and 7.7 rebounds although his free throw percentage (58.5) is slightly behind last year’s pace. However, two underrated aspects of his game, which he showed fl ashes of last year, have looked very impressive early on. For a 6-10 forward, Powell is an excellent passer, dishing out a team-best 50 assists (4.2 per game). He also leads the club with 18 steals. Powell ranked third on the squad in those same two categories last year, so his producti on this year is no fl uke. The preseason accolades conti nue to roll in, as Powell has been named to the John R. Wooden Award watch list and is one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award.

Brown’s Return Provides Immediate BoostReturning to acti on aft er missing all but four games last year due to a hip injury, Anthony Brown has been a key component of the off ense. Reaching double fi gures in nine games, Brown is averaging 13.4 points and 5.6 rebounds while shooti ng 52.9 percent from the fi eld. More impressive is Brown’s blistering 56.1 percent clip (23-41) from three-point territory. His slashing, att acking style of play has resulted in an 78.9 percent (30-38) ledger from the foul line. A 2011 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team selecti on, Brown provides Stanford with added length and athleti cism while also serving as its best perimeter defender.

Nasti c Anchoring The FrontcourtPlaying regularly for the fi rst ti me in his career, Stefan Nasti c is averaging 8.8 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. Nasti c has reached double fi gures in scoring six ti mes, a feat he had accomplished only twice overall in 53 career games prior to this year. He’s shooti ng 60.7 percent, scoring the majority of his buckets on high-percentage shots inside the paint. Nasti c is a capable free throw shooter (72.1 percent) who has a knack for frustrati ng his defender and drawing contact. He must conti nue to improve on the glass, having totaled fewer rebounds (32) than free throw att empts (43) and fi eld goal tries (61).

Huesti s’ Strong Defensive Play Conti nuesThe front-runner for Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, Josh Huesti s is averaging 11.5 points and a team-best 8.2 rebounds in his annual quest to become the fi rst Cardinal player to average a double-double since Curti s Borchardt (16.9 ppg, 11.4 rpg) in 2001-02. Huesti s nearly accomplished the feat last year, averaging 10.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while compiling nine double-doubles. With 29 swats already this year, Huesti s ranks third in school history with 150 career blocks. He’s also shooti ng 43.5 percent (10-23) from three-point territory. Only three players boast career marks of at least 500 points, 500 rebounds and 100 blocks: Huesti s (755, 637, 150), Tim Young (1544, 1070, 167) and Howard Wright (1599, 860, 121).

Cardinal Cashing In At The Foul LineStanford is converti ng at 70.5 percent from the foul line while averaging 23.4 att empts per game. Chasson Randle (59-73, 80.8 percent) and Anthony Brown (30-38, 78.9 percent) lead the way, as fi ve players have already tallied at least 25 free throw att empts. The aggressive backcourt has done a solid job of driving the lane while the frontcourt is batt ling on the glass and routi nely drawing contact. Stanford shot free throws at a 74.3 percent clip last year, good for 35th nati onally and the best mark in school history since a 76.3 percent clip in 2005-06.

Bright Is Latest Injury CasualtyThree players are out for the year, with Aaron Bright (dislocated right shoulder) the most recent additi on to a list that already includes Andy Brown (torn right ACL) and Christi an Sanders (hip). Bright, who will undergo season-ending surgery later this week, is completi ng coursework toward an undergraduate degree in science, technology and society and is expected to graduate in June. The MVP of Stanford’s 2012 Postseason NIT championship run, Bright averaged 8.7 points and 3.0 assists in 105 career games while his 316 career assists rank 10th in school history. Meanwhile, Rosco Allen (stress fracture) returned to the court against Cal Poly.

STANFORD BASKETBALL IN THE NEWSExcerpts from recent local and nati onal feature stories, game recaps, tweets, columns and blog posts spotlighti ng Stanford basketball.

Stanford looked good in a 79-62 victory, which ended a 9-3 preseason, but you can bet The Farm that Dawkins will let his team hear about the Mustangs’ late 12-3 run before Cal visits Maples Pavilion.

“The thing we need to get bett er at is understanding the need to play for 40 minutes, to fi nish teams off ,” Dawkins said. “Teams are going to sti ck around and compete the whole game. You have to make sure you stay focused. I think we had lapses there and it’s something we need to clean up this week.”

Otherwise, Dawkins was happy with the win and rightf ully pleased with the team’s play toward the end of a challenging nonconference schedule that included 15,000 miles in the air and one signature win.

“Would I have liked to win more games? Absolutely,” Dawkins said. “But I think our guys did a really good job. I think the teams we played really helped us prepare for conference play.”

Stanford heads into the Pac-12 with a center who is playing with utmost confi dence. Stefan Nasti c ti ed a career high with 14 points against Michigan, then busted past that with 20 against Cal Poly.

The close calls are sti ll on the ti p of Johnny Dawkins’ tongue. Syracuse at the Garden two years ago. Kentucky in overti me two years before that. Late leads against top-10 teams that morphed into painful losses, missed opportuniti es for program-defi ning victories.

But against No. 10 Connecti cut, Stanford did not miss. The Cardinal was down 10 at half and 13 with 17 minutes left but won 53-51, holding the previously undefeated Huskies to fi ve fi eld goals aft er halft ime.

When UConn’s fi nal shot rimmed out, Stanford players ran to the bench to celebrate, fully understanding how important the victory was for the program and Dawkins.

Next to winning the NIT championship in 2012, the win over UConn — Stanford’s fi rst road win against a top-10 team since February of 2008 — is the program’s most rewarding win of Dawkins’ tenure.

“I think it is,” said Dawkins. “From the standpoint of the environment that we went into, and not only was it a team that was ranked, but I’ve always had a great deal of respect for that program and what they’ve accomplished. It’s one of the best wins we’ve had.”

Connecti cut was exposed a bit by Stanford’s zone. Not every team will choose the style against UConn nor have the length the Cardinal guarded Napier with as Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins put Anthony Brown and Chasson Randle on Napier, a decision Dawkins said was a necessity to win.

Beati ng the No. 10 team in a true road game gives the Cardinal a signature win they coveted. Sweeping this second road swing to the East Coast can be a season changer. This was one game that showed the Huskies can look one dimensional, while the Cardinal proved they can diversify. UConn needs to make sure this was more of an anomaly, while Stanford must hope this is its norm.

Anthony Brown’s scoring, defense and ball-handling were missed last season, but he gained valuable insight watching from the bench.

“The biggest thing is that the game slowed down for me,” he said. “I saw how many plays you could make on the court that didn’t have to with scoring or shooti ng the ball. When you’re on the outside, you get to see team chemistry and how the team handles adversity. It was a blessing in disguise.”

“I think he’s added quite a bit to our team with his presence,” said head coach Johnny Dawkins. “He’s bigger and more mature now with the year he had sitti ng on the bench watching. I think all of those things have helped him improve as a player. If he doesn’t have a shot, he’s a facilitator and willing passer. He’s a very unselfi sh ballplayer and I really enjoy coaching him.”

Dawkins was quick to remind that Brown was only 17 when he arrived on campus and was “thrown to the wolves. He was probably 180 soaking wet at 6-6 in a conference where you have 20-year-old freshmen,” he said. “He’s really had to grow and adjust.”
