CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

The past 12 months has consolidated the strong position of Athletics WA.

The year was defined by the performances of our champion javelin thrower, Kim Mickle. Kim’s silver medal at the World Championships in Moscow was the best individual athletic performance by a West Australian since the feats of the legendary Herb Elliott in the 1960s. Kim capped off the best year of her international career being crowned the Australian Athlete of the Year.

Her dedication and talent was harnessed by her long term coach Grant Ward whose efforts were also recognised in winning the Australian Coach of the Year. Congratulations to them both from all of us at Athletics WA.

At a national level we were disappointed that an attempted merger driven by the Australian Sports Commission between Athletics and

Little Athletics did not eventuate however we will continue to strive and hopefully a merger will eventuate which will be for the good of the sport. However it was not all bad news on a national level as Athletics WA were successful in our bid for Athletics Australia to sanction the 2014 National Cross Country Championships to be held in Albany in August. This is the first time this national event has been taken to regional WA and it proved to be a fantastic venue and a very successful event. Our sincere thanks to the City Of Albany for their unbelievable support and to Stephen Stingemore for the effortless and professional manner in which he ran the event.

Preparations for the annual Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic were jeopardised when the WA Athletics Stadium track was closed post - Christmas for resurfacing. Fortunately it was completed on time and we are fortunate to still have the best athletics stadium in the country, this time in a fashionable blue colour!

The Track Classic was again the feature of the summer where fans were treated to some of the world’s leading international superstars of athletics such as Olympic 400m hurdles gold medallist Felix Sanchez of the Dominican Republic and reigning world 400m champion LaShawn Merritt of the US. The crowd were treated to no less than six Australian athletes producing performances that bettered the Commonwealth Games ‘A’ Standard, as well as a further 27 athletes reaching the Commonwealth Games ‘B’ Standard for their event. Kim Mickle’s throw of 63.37m in the women’s javelin also established a world leading mark for 2014.At management level, our long serving CEO Wayne Loxley took long service leave from October to February and Operations Manager Stephen Stingemore assumed the role in Wayne’s absence. I would like to personally thank Stephen for his outstanding contribution in managing the organisation during that time.I am particularly pleased to announce the addition of two new board members in elite cricket coach Mickey Arthur and leading clinical psychologist Kelly Botha who complete a well balanced and professional sporting board. I would also like to thank Rebecca Bridge for her contribution to the Board. Rebecca’s work commitments have prevented her from continuing as a board member. Finally, I would like to thank all board members for their continued support of our administrative team whom, led by CEO Wayne Loxley, continue to promote and deliver our sport in a professional manner of which we should all be proud.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I write another CEO report on behalf of our organisation that continues to be the benchmark for athletics administration throughout the country.

On a personal level, I was fortunate to be granted long service leave from October to February and I would like to take the opportunity of officially thanking Stephen Stingemore for filling the chair during that time and doing a fantastic job in my absence.

His contribution continued on my return in the role of Operations Manager with an emphasis on Out of Stadia management which is an area of major focus for our future business.

The year saw the departure of Development Manager John de Bes who has been replaced by Mel Tantrum whose background in high performance including AWD is timely as we have received funding from DSR to promote and develop this area of our sport.

Our management team has also been strengthened with the appointment of regular volunteer and official David Smith in a part time role as Social Media Manager to broaden our exposure and promotion in this all important area.

Our board has also been strengthened in this period with the appointment of elite cricket coach Mickey Arthur and clinical psychologist Kelly Botha, both of whom will add significantly to an already extremely professional group.

The failure of the merger at national level between Athletics and Little Athletics has been well documented but this has not adversely affected the Community Athletics Council that has been in operation for two years. Comprising representation of Athletics, Little Athletics and independent members, the Council does however face some key challenges in the next 12 months.

While the joint programs that are a consequence of the formation of the Council are of great benefit to the sport, the Council was formed with a broader agenda in mind. It is hoped that some of these challenges can be addressed in the next period for the Council to be truly effective.

This has in no way jeopardised the excellent working relationship between the two administrations however as this continues to offer real hope for continued growth and promotion of our sport.

Our domestic season was hampered by the need for a track resurface due to the early deterioration of the mondo surface but I would like to thank our venue manager Venueswest for their diligent and efficient approach to rectifying the problem and to Mondo International for honouring a major part of the warranty.

Page 7

Although our members had their season interrupted and we thank them for their understanding, it was apparent to everyone that the state of the track and the need for it to be laid in hot weather left us no option but to complete the work in the heart of our season.

The new blue track surface against the back drop of the green trees improved the aesthetic appearance to match the outstanding performance qualities of our state of the art stadium and this was again highlighted by the performances at the Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic in February.

Our local champion Kim Mickle continued her dominance and arrival at the elite level with another strong performance that was matched by Olympic champion Sally Pearson.

Kim’s outstanding year continued when she broke the Australian Javelin Record in Melbourne on 22nd March. This record had been held by Louise Curry for 14 years.

This night continues to be the flagship of our year and an opportunity to showcase top level track and field to our sponsors, members and the public in what is always beautiful Perth weather conditions.

After a period of negotiation with Athletics Australia, we were excited to announce that Athletics WA in partnership with the City of Albany will be hosting the 2014 National Cross Country Championships in Albany which is sure to provide an excellent course in one of the most picturesque parts of Western Australia.

I would also like to thank our staff who provide a fantastic working environment as we attempt to promote and deliver athletics to our members and the broader community.

As has become customary in completing my report, I leave the final accolade to the soul of our sport, our officials. Their tireless contribution keeps our sport alive….thank you!

The Olympic champion Sally Pearson (Qld) found early season form after she blazed the straight to clock 12.59 (w: -0.2) and win the womens 100m hurdles at the Go for 2 & 5 Perth Track Classic.

Pearson’s effort was but one of many outstanding performances at the WA Athletics Stadium, with Melissa Breen (ACT, 100m), Alana Boyd (Qld, pole vault), Kim Mickle (WA, javelin), Kathryn Mitchell (Vic, javelin) and Kelsey-Lee Roberts (ACT, javelin) joining her on the Commonwealth Games A-Qualifier list and a further 27 athletes bettering the Commonwealth Games ‘B’ Standard for their event.

Pearson’s hurdles race was the second event on the track as part of the main program, and she didn’t disappoint the estimated crowd of 4100.

A clear leader at the first hurdle, she never looked back, making light work of the ten barriers between her and the finish line to launch her 2014 campaign faster than she ever has before. Local talent Shannon McCann was second (WA, 13.15, CG-B) and IAAF World Junior Championships finalist Michelle Jenneke (NSW, 13.34) third.

Breen too was dominant. After slipping in the blocks and being called back for a restart, the new Australian 100m record holder was strong throughout to win the womens 100m in 11.31 (w: +1.1) from Ashleigh Whittaker (Vic, second, 11.58) and Toea Wisil (PNG, third, 11.67).

In other sprint highlights, Jarrod Geddes (NSW) became the first Australian man with a Commonwealth Games B-Qualifier in the sprints after he placed second in 20.59 (w: +1.1) to Simon Magakwe (RSA, first, 20.58) in the men’s 200m and LaShawn Merritt (USA) won the men’s 400m in 45.90 from Craig Burns (Qld, second, 46.21, PB) and Ben Offereins (WA, third, 47.19).

Shining in the longer middle distance races, James Magut (KEN, 3:53.73), Collis Birmingham (Vic, 3:54.92, 1500m CG-B) and Paul Robinson (IRE, 3:59.56) all broke the 4 minute mile mark in what is believed to be the fastest mile run in Perth.

Zoe Buckman (Vic, second, 4:07.56), Kaila McKnight (Vic, third, 4:07.92) and Melissa Duncan (Vic, 4th, 4:09.13) all achieved Commonwealth Games ‘B’ Standards in the womens 1500m when they crossed behind winner Susan Kuijken (NED, 4:07.21).

Mickle won the javelin with a best mark of 63.37m in third round from Roberts (ACT, second, 61.99m) and Mitchell (Vic, third, 60.42m).

IAAF World Championships West Australian and eight-time national champion Kim Mickle closed the Australian Flame campaign at the IAAF World Championships in stunning style by winning the SILVER medal in the womens javelin final. Mickle earned her position on the podium with a huge new personal best of 66.60m, just 20 centimetres shy of the Australian record. Mickle opened her account with a smaller than usual 60.43m before a second round then personal best of 66.25m saw her move into the gold medal position. She remained there until eventual winner Christina Obergfoll (GER, first, 69.05m) clinched the lead the following round, with Mickle then throwing 64.18m, 64.29m, a foul and her best mark to close out yet another consistent series. Maria Abukumova (RUS) won bronze with a 65.09m throw.

Mickle’s best mark improved on the then career best of 65.73m she threw to qualify for the final, and not only eradicated the disappointment of her London 2012 Olympic Games campaign but also betters her outstanding 6th from the IAAF World Championships two years before in Daegu (KOR). “I don’t even know what to say. I can’t believe that actually happened. I enjoyed every moment of it. It was the scariest and funniest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s a dream come true,” Mickle, who is the Australian Flame vice captain, said. “On that last throw the Russians got behind me and I boomed the hell out of it. I almost got the Aussie record but hey that gives me something to do next year. There is still more there and it is such an exciting time for me. “This is redemption. It keeps popping into my mind how bad last year was, and this is the complete flip. It shows that you can’t let yourself get down in the dumps you just use it as fuel and capitalise on it the next year.”

Other Western Australians who made the Australian team for Moscow were Lauren Shelley (Marathon) and Ben Offeriens (4 x 400m relay) and both are to be congratulated.

The 2013/14 Strive season kicked off with the WA All Schools Championships on the 25th -27th October. The regular Friday night interclub competition continued up until Christmas with the last meet of the year held on the popular Thursday night. During the month of January there was a hiatus in competition while the new track surface was laid. Athletes were raring to go come 7th Feb when the interclub competition resumed on the fast blue track. The final interclub meet was held on 28th March. In total 14 Strive programs were held during the season.

Notwithstanding the enforced break in competition, it was encouraging to see competition numbers and membership remain steady given the influx the previous season most likely due to hosting the Australian Junior Championships.

There were some exceptional performances throughout the season. Ranging from athletes making huge improvements on their personal bests to those WA athletes bettering records. During the Perth Track Classic there were five All Comer records broken by interstate guests however a special congratulations go to the following WA Athletes who broke records:

• Amy McCormick: Open & U20 Women 3000m Steeplechase 10:24.98 (State) Sydney

Sydney Olympic Park 12th–16th March 2014

The Australian Junior Championships returned to Sydney Olympic Park in 2014. A record number of 2100 athletes competed in the five day competition.

The WA team was the largest travelling team to date. Total team size was 171 comprising of 88 boys and 83 girls. Many parents are now combining the Nationals with a holiday to Sydney resulting in a small group of 36 staying in the team accommodation. Each day the whole team met in the grandstand to cheer on the WA team.

Once again our middle distance squad featured in most finals and proved to be a strong event group for WA. Our jumps events, particularly pole vault was very exciting with both Nina Kennedy and Emma Philippe qualifying for the World Juniors in Eugene, USA in July 2014. Medals were won in the High, Long and Triple Jump events. The WA sprinters and hurdlers are improving led by James Gallaugher who broke the Under 15 100m and 200m Meet record. The throwing events in general prove to be a challenge, in particular the hammer throw where we struggle to find competitors. However, there is a strong group of young javelin and discus throwers coming through who look capable of doing well in the future.

Page 16

The sport of athletics is highly dependent on officials who each week volunteer their time for the benefit of our many athletes aspiring for greatness or just a personal best. Each local competition involves between 40 and 50 officials who are required to be skilled in the art of athletic officialdom.

Athletics WA must recruit, train and retain these officials without whom the sport would not survive. To assist in this regard Athletics WA are very fortunate to have the support of Fiona Brown, (Officials’ Education) assisted by Jennifer Wheatley while Marian Buchanan (Recruitment and Education) is engaged by the Community Athletics Council of WA for the benefit of both AWA and Little Athletics WA.

AWA recognised the need for officials to fulfil future roles in specific disciplines in the athletic fields and introduced a mentoring program for identified officials. Both the mentor and mentee received financial assistance to enable them to obtain national experience in the nominated disciplines. This concept is envisaged to continue into the future. AWA was successful in obtaining a grant from the Department of Sport and Recreation to assist in the development and retention of officials, which contributed to this program. All mentors were successful in improving their official classification in the specific disciplines. It is fair to report that AWA is setting an example for other states in the application and support of officials’ development through our mentor program.

During this period AWA officials contributed significantly to the overall development of officials in Australian through their role with various Athletic Australia Officials’ committees.

During this period approximately 15 training courses were conducted for officials linked to forthcoming national and international events in Perth supported by practical experience. These courses were very well attended and covered a wide variety of track, field and management disciplines. Underpinning all these courses was the recruitment and development of officials at the Little Athletics centres.

During this season all qualified and active officials were provided, free of charge, the 2014 IAAF rule book, which is a first for AWA and again set an example for other states. Also to encourage the retention and reward officials AWA adopted the Community Development Foundation ‘Club Passport’ program, which rewards officials for the various elements they undertake in the sport. AWA was one of four Sporting Bodies selected to participate in the original trial, which will continue for three years.

A newsletter has been developed, which was regularly distributed to all officials, providing timely information, training schedule and tips on being an official. This concept was well received.

The major competition for 2013 – 14 season was the Perth Track Classic on 22 February 2014 and AWA was required to provide sufficient officials for the conduct of the event. It is very pleasing to report that AWA was able to provide 90% of the required officials (approximately 100) with Athletics Australia required to only source key officials. AWA officials performed in a praiseworthy manner.

Importantly for the continued success of the sport four AWA officials were successful in obtaining their ‘A’ level qualification, which entitles them to officiate at a national level. In addition, Marian Buchanan was successful in achieving an Oceania International Area Technical Official qualification. A great effort and provides AWA with ongoing key officials for the future.

The 2014 – 15 season will see the introduction of a number of new training, appointment and management issues for all officials throughout Australia in preparation for the Commonwealth Games in 2018. The aim is to start to identify and train officials to ensure that sufficient officials are available for selection to host the Games.

The effort and performance of our officials is outstanding and it is very difficult to highlight individuals but the following have received Athletics Australia Officials Awards.• Vicki Birtles – 10 year service award• Fiona Brown – 20 year service award• Jacquie Cattermole – 30 year service awardIt is pleasing to report that AWA has taken a significant step forward in the past 12 months in assisting our officials in achieving their goal of performing on the international athletic stage.

Jayne Mitchell coordinated two clubs officers to develop club capability.Allan Savage was working with Kingsway LAC, in its second year, and Wes Salisbury was working with Canning Districts AC and Carey Baptist College, Southern Districts LAC.

Their objectives were:

To achieve a 10% increase in the number of accredited coaches coaching at senior level. To achieve a 20% increase on the number of athletes competing at senior competition. To achieve a 20% increase on the number of athletes registered at senior club.

To achieve a 10% increase in the number of volunteers assisting at senior competitions. They achieved their targets in each category and their roles were seen to be an overall success.

Long term athlete development

New directions to develop pathways for young athletes to stay with the sport have been a focus this season. Apart from club development, there have been several other initiatives including:

• 2014/15 Bayswater/ Embleton working towards a senior club, a development squad is in place.• 2014/15 Darling Range Sport College/ Belmont LAC/Forrestfield LAC to form a senior club

which will be ready for next season• 2014/15 Cockburn Little Athletic Centre forming a pathway for athletes to continue after 17yr• 2013/14 Yanchep LAC still to become a senior club• 2013/14 Kimberley AC and Broome AC formed• Narrogin LAC has successfully formed a pathway via dual registration.• Kingsway as a relatively new club has continued to grow and retain athletes in the target

age group.

The focus of the 2013/14 Track & Field season has been to further increase participation of transition age athletes (14-17 year olds.) The season was marked with a very successful National All Schools Championships in Townsville and an extremely successful Australian Junior Championships in Sydney, March 2014. The latter team was largely made up of the target age group and 170 athletes travelled to compete, which was the biggest travelling team to date.

Increase in MembershipsThe graph indicates the increases in transition age athletes participating in State All Schools, and State Junior Championships and the trend for the following season. The increase in numbers of transition age athletes competing at Strive Competitions this season has also peaked with an average of 300 athletes in U18 and younger each week. These events were promoted by AWA and LAWA to maximize participation.

Pathways for athletesThis season the athlete progression guide was included in the little athletes’ registration show bag enabling athletes, coaches and parents to see which pathways are available for every athlete. This was updated and improved for the season by the LAWA Development Officer and the Clubs Officer. It has enabled athletes to see a long term participation plan and this document will continue to be included in the information given at the start of each season to transition age Little Athletes, and will be available on the AWA website.

Little Athletics InvitationThe Little Athlete Challenge commenced in 2012/13 when a number of LA Centres were invited to compete as a team in a run, jump & throw format. The Challenge runs concurrently with the senior Strive Competition so the Little Athletes become familiar with the senior format. Little Athletes are now feeling less intimidated and we have experienced an increase in the number of junior athletes competing in the senior competition.

The 2013/14 series was open to all the Centres and we had a 50% increase in participation with each competition attracting 100 athletes. Three Challenges were conducted with the top 4 going to the grand final.

Come n Try DaysSenior athletics has a number of events which are not offered in the traditional Little Athletics or school competitions. The Transition Clinics offers a one hour coaching session to young athletes who may not be familiar with certain events or techniques associated with senior competitions. Qualified coaches conducted clinics prior to the senior Strive Competition. These included Steeplechase, Hammer Throw, Pole Vault, 200m Hurdles, Starting Blocks, Fosbury Flop technique and Javelin. The clinic were popular with over 20 athletes attending each clinic. They were conducted twice a month and are free to athletes, parents and coaches. In 2014/15 we plan to continue introducing junior athletes to new events and give them the opportunity to meet our senior coaches. It has been a positive experience for athletes and coachesThe Junior Tab is proving to be popular on the AWA website and includes features “Junior Athlete of the month” and Flotrack style videos of junior events (You tube links), includes LA Challenges, State competitions, along with a Facebook page and Twitter.Flyers were again sent to all Little Athletes U16 and U17 from last season ago to invite them back to athletics.

Delivered throughout rural WA, the Go For 2 & 5 Indigenous Development program in partnership with Healthway and supported by the national Athletics for the Outback program encourages healthy lifestyles through athletics. Under the leadership of Lindsay Bunn, Athletics WA and Healthway have continued to promote the Go For 2 & 5 message while increasing the participation of athletics activities throughout WA.

Significant development has occurred in the Broome Kimberly Region with over 600 children participating in athletics programs and carnivals. This included the negotiation and organisation of an Athletics Academy at Broome Senior High School, with training squads meeting twice a week. Through this Academy we have created a pathway for talented athletes to continue athletics. The Broome Academy is the second Go For 2 & 5 development squad, with athletes also being trained as coaches. This structure has been instrumental in the creation of a permanent athletics presence and represents a fantastic resource for future athletics in the Kimberly region.

This year also saw the formation of a strategic partnership with Garnduwa, the predominant indigenous sports organisation in the region. Together, Athletics WA and Garnduwa have promoted the development of athletics through coaching courses and raised the profile of athletics by offering more competitions for children in the area.

Development has also continued in the Carnarvon Gascoyne region with the negotiation for Broome PCYC to start an after school athletics program that targets indigenous youth. This has resulted in a breakthrough in raising the profile and participation of Little Athletics. Furthermore the success of Broome’s Go For 2 & 5 Development squad has led to plans to transfer the development model to Carnarvon College next year.

The Western Desert has experienced some exciting development since Athletics WA’s first visit to the region last year. For the first time ever, an inter-school carnival was held between the Jigalong and Nullagine community.

Athletics WA has also continued to build on its relationship with Clontarf Academy in creating pathways for indigenous students from regional areas. Currently we have four students staying at the academy who are a part of the Go For 2 & 5 CaLD development squad, however this year Clontarf have given permission for up to 15 students from regional areas to attend for the purpose of athletics. This represents an exciting and important part of our strategy to provide pathways for remote area youth through athletics.

The CaLD development squad continued to grow with over 300 children engaging with the athletics program. The Butler College based group continued to show promise with seven students committing to complete their Level 1 coaching Accreditation in term four of 2014. This will be a vital step in creating a sustainable long term plan for the CaLD program, as these student coaches will be essential in providing after school programmes for future athletes.

The program also ran after school clinics at McGillivray Oval and Balga which was successful in engaging young students and parents about opportunities in athletics. These metropolitan based courses allow us to suggest pathways in athletics, with the aim to retain talented athletes who may leave athletics for other sports.

Achievements1. At WA All schools Championships, Little Athletics State Championships and WA State

Senior and Junior Championships the squad won a total of 34 medals (14 gold). All but 2 members of the squad qualified for national junior or senior championships. They broke 3 state records and one national record.

2. Mangar Makur Chuot won the squads first national senior championship in the 200 metres in Melbourne and missed the qualifying time for the Commonwealth Games Team by 0.06.

3. Susan Chuot was selected in the WA State Woman’s AFL team.4. Squad members continued their extraordinary efforts in travelling all over the state

coaching in support of the CALD/IDP Programme. It is the response of communities to their efforts that sustains the entire programme.

Lindsay Bunn and his athletes who travel extensively to deliver this program are to be congratulated on their outstanding contribution.

Out of StadiumCross Country Season

The 2014 winter cross country and out of stadia season attracted a lot of interest from a wide range of middle distance runners due to WA hosting ‘The 2014 Go for 2 & 5 Australian Cross Country Championships’ in Albany in August. Combined with the Perth Bankwest Gallipoli Run, (this event is reported separately within the annual report), AWA were able to entice a lot of new competitors to the winter running domain.

All athletes wishing to represent WA at the Australian Championships in Albany were obliged to compete at AWA State Championship events during this season, which contributed to a very successful competition.

Athletics WA has for many years focused solely on traditional events but having now branched out into the community fun run environment AWA is now able to offer a wider variety of events. This has proven to be positive financially for both AWA and our principal supporting beneficiaries.

AWA’s State Championship events were again conducted within the perimeters of Perry Lakes, which provides great spectator viewing and involvement. Fortunately both days of competitions were kind to runners and officials with the rain holding off until completion of the events.

The State Short Course Championship opened the season in May at Perry Lakes with strong fields entered in all age groups.

Kate Fitzsimons led all the way in the women’s events and Joshua Tedesco followed his normal well known tactic of sitting and finishing very strongly denying Scott Tamblin of a win. Some very consistent and strong performances were displayed during the season by the under age groups, which bode well for the forthcoming Australian Championships.

A special thanks to Geoffrey Garnett and Henri Cortis for their ongoing support in officiating at all cross country events. Geoffrey and Henri regardless of the weather conditions have performed their duties in a friendly manner helping to make cross country events more rewarding for all involved.

Our partnership with the WAMC continues to grow resulting in a more positive and attractive events for a variety of running competitions covering 10kms to a marathon.

Athletics WA acknowledges the support of all parents, athletes and coaches in contributing to make the 2014 Cross Country Season a success for all involved.

Bankwest Gallipoli Run 2014Sunday 13 Aprilth 2014 The Bankwest Gallipoli Run was conducted a week earlier this year due to a clash with the ‘Easter’ celebrations. The tradition of the Sunday before Anzac was unachievable in 2014 but will be resumed in 2015. Due to the fast growth of the event considerable negotiations were held with Botanical Gardens & Park Authority in an endeavour to change the course to accommodate the increasing growth. A compromise was reached with two distinct races, the 4km and 8km, being conducted. This required an early start to the 4km race.

Entries were open in February 2014 and entries started to grow from the date. Pressure was on to exceed the previous figures of 2 000 registrations. The theme of the Bankwest Gallipoli Run being a family event continued with over 100 family groups of 4 registering in 2014.

Following on from the 2013 process race pack collections were conducted both at the Athletics WA office and Bankwest in Murray Street Perth. This minimised the time required on race day.

The final race day figures were equal to the 2013 figures, a very pleasing result. Race day set-up started in the dark on a cold and damp morning due to the early race time start of 7.30am for the 4km event. Torches were the order of the day.

All runners were led through a short and vigorous warm up by members of the Western Force Rugby team. Everything was ready on time and the event started with reciting of the ‘Last Post’ and reveille, a most memorable occasion at this time in the morning with the sun rising over the hill. The ‘sea of orange’ was observed to run up the hill and out of sight. Setting an example for all was the President of the RSL, Mr Graham Edwards, pushing off in his wheelchair for the 4km event. A courageous effort.First to enter the Bankwest finishing arch was Christopher Dale followed by Ben Chamberlain and Yunus Mohammed. Christopher Dale was the 2013 winner of the 4km run. The winner of

the women’s 4km race was Melany Smart followed by Monique Hollick and Savannah Steinbach.

At 8.30am the 8km runners gathered for the Anzac ode delivered by race patron John Gilmour OAM followed by the Last Post and a minute silence. The sea of orange again appeared as runners set off on their 8 km challenge. Roberto Busi, winner in 2011, 2012 and 2013 led the field around the first lap and extended his lead to easily win in 2014. Roberto, a popular winner, again showed his love for the course and cause and continues to delight the crowd with his acceptance speech. Following Roberto through the Bankwest arch was Alex Dreyer and Matt Smith.

The winner of the women’s race was Kate Fitzsimons, followed by Melanie Black and Tarinah Nazaroff who placed in the 4km race in 2013.

Generous cash prizes were awarded to all place getters by Rachel Mott, Senior Sponsorship Manager Bankwest and Mr Wayne Loxley CEO Athletics WA.

The continued success of the Bankwest Gallipoli Run event was highlighted by the donation to the RSL, major beneficiary, of $20 000 and $10 000 to Legacy from the 2014 event.

Bankwest Gallipoli runs in 2014 will be conducted in Regional locations, starting with Bunbury in September and Albany in October 2014. 2014 – 15 is generating a lot of excitement with the Bankwest Gallipoli Runs being incorporated as part of the ANZAC centenary commemorations.

The ongoing generous support of Bankwest towards the conduct of this series of community runs is a significant contribution and indication of their commitment to WA. Also special appreciation is extended to BGPA for their ongoing support. An event of this nature requires a lot of volunteers, from the tried and true AWA officials to the Army cadets who cannot be thanked enough, but thank you!

Planning is well underway for the 2015 Bankwest Gallipoli Run to promote the 100 year commemoration celebration.

Wayne Loxley and Bankwest Marketing Manager Paul Vivian presented the RSL President Graham Edwards with another cheque.
