Hospice Care Ottawa is a community-based charitable organization

offering services for clients and their loved ones to experience palliative and end-of-life care in a supportive and peaceful home-like environment. Providing dignity and comfort is the focus of our care. Services are supported by our team of dedicated staff and trained volunteers and are provided at no cost to clients or their families. We currently have three hospice sites to serve people living in the City of Ottawa:

Central West Hospice 1400 Carling Avenue, Ottawa In 2013, we opened ten hospice beds at our interim location at Embassy West Senior Living. This is a temporary site that allows us to offer our important residential hospice care services until we have our permanent location in Kanata.

May Court Hospice 114 Cameron Avenue, Ottawa Located on the banks of the Ottawa river, this picturesque site houses nine residential hospice beds and offers three Day Hospice Programs, In-Home Support and Family Support.

Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice 110 McCurdy Drive, Kanata

Hospice Care Ottawa is so fortunate to have a Board of

We acquired our new west-end facility in June, 2013 and have had a busy year renovating the building. Currently from this site we offer our In-Home Support Program and a Day Hospice program will be moved into this lovely new location soon. Once funding is secured we will expand on the current structure and build our permanent ten bed residential hospice.

Development Messages from the Board Chair and Executive Director

Leadership in Action

This report represents the first full fiscal year of Hospice Care Ottawa since the amalgamation of The Hospice at May Court and Friends of Hospice Ottawa in January 2013.

Since that time our community has seen important developments: the integration of two groups of volunteers and staff; the strategic planning and branding exercises leading to the creation of our Mission, Vision and Values and our name, Hospice Care Ottawa/La Maison de soins paliatifs d'Ottawa; the establishment of temporary residential beds at the Central West Hospice housed in the Embassy West Seniors Living complex on Carling Avenue, beginning with four beds in February 2013 and resulting in a ten-bed hospice by November 2013. We also acquired the former Holy Trinity Presbyterian Church on McCurdy Drive in Kanata to serve the needs of the communities in the western part of the city. Through the generosity of the business community, and especially the Ruddy, Shenkman and Hein families, many private donors and our partnership with the Bruyère Foundation, we have been fortunate to advance the development of the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata.

These results are nothing short of remarkable in so brief a period. They are a tribute to the dedication of our volunteers, staff, board members, community and business supporters, the Champlain Local Integration Network, the Champlain Hospice Palliative Care Program, the Bruyère Foundation and the continuing partnership with the May Court Club of Ottawa, without whose support none of this work would be possible.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our volunteers, staff and board members for their devotion to the hospice movement. I would also like to thank Lisa Sullivan, our Executive Director, for her inspired leadership throughout this time.

Best wishes to all as we continue to extend hospice palliative care in our region.

It is my pleasure to have served as your Executive Director for this first full year of Hospice Care Ottawa and to be part of the creation of this wonderful organization. The success of Hospice Care Ottawa comes in large part from the wealth of knowledge, experience and community commitment brought to us from our founding organizations: Friends of Hospice Ottawa and The Hospice at May Court.

This past year has been one of change and challenge but together we have ensured that the people of Ottawa have had access to the highest quality hospice care when they needed it. I am especially proud to know that we demonstrated and stayed true to our values. We have committed to excellence in care providing increased number of hospice beds, increased training and education for our staff and volunteers and implementing enhanced occupational health and safety at our sites. We have collaborated with our partners in acute care hospitals, community services agencies and other palliative service providers to improve our ability to work as a system and provide coordinated care and “one stop shopping” for clients. We continue to rely on and respect our community roots which generate the more than 700 volunteers that make hospice care possible. Compassion remains visible in all of our work from the "good morning" at our reception to the respectful manner in which our nurses provide personal care and support. But perhaps courage is the most important value we witness everyday at Hospice Care Ottawa. The courage of all of you to journey with us on this transition in Hospice; the courage of our staff and volunteers to adapt to new policies/procedures and new ways of doing things; and most importantly the courage of our clients and their loved ones who face the most difficult journey of their lives with such grace and dignity.

I thank all of you for your support and look forward to our next year of journeying together.

People

Volunteer Extraordinaire

Inge Kelly arrived in Canada from Denmark in 1952 and was over-whelmed by the kindness she received in her new country. She asked a friend how she could say thank you to those who wel-comed her. Her friend said simply "Pay it Back" and Inge has been lovingly doing that in so many ways since .

She is our Florence Nightingale, a role model to many who have the privilege to work and volunteer along-side her.

Since retiring from nursing Inge has been a full time palliative care volunteer; there is not one area of the organization that she has not been involved in over the years, and they are all special to her.

"It is the wonderful people that you meet along the way, the clients and their families, the volunteers, and to be part of peoples lives especially those near death, is a privilege."

For Inge the rewards are numerous. "To care for a client and spend time with them, to be given the trust of one so close to death, to make a difference in that persons last moments is a blessing."

This dedicated, compassionate, understated, and wonderful woman who says "Passing it on has enriched my life" has also enriched ours.

Our Volunteer Community

Hospice volunteers support and enhance our programs and services. They contribute to all aspects of hospice care from caregiving to transportation, reception, administration, beautification and maintenance of our hospices and gardens, and special projects. Volunteers assist with fundraising, helping achieve our revenue goals.

In 2013, 51 new volunteers graduated from the Hospice Palliative Care Core Volunteer Training and joined the care team to support people with a life limiting illness and their families. Our expanded Volunteer Coordination team has staff at all locations responding to our growing need for volunteers. In 2013-14, over 700 volunteers donated 54,220 hours of service.

Congratulations to the 51 graduates of the Fall 2013 Volunteer Training Program. We are so fortunate to have so many dedicated and compassionate volunteers as part of our Hospice Care Ottawa community.

A Day Hospice Story of Painting and Purpose Five years ago, Norm Polowin, a retired salesman and proud family man, had never painted anything - except a veranda and perhaps a bedroom wall or two. Now, Norm who is 87 years old, has just sold upwards of 75 original paintings at his premier art show raising over $900 for Hospice Care Ottawa.

It was through staff members and volunteers at Hospice Care Ottawa that Norm was introduced to painting. Norm's beloved wife Ruth had recently passed away at the May Court Hospice site when art therapy (one of the many optional activities of the day hospice program) was suggested to him. Norm admits that he was skeptical, but after his first dance with a paintbrush and acrylics, he was hooked.

Norm says the art therapy volunteers encouraged him to use his imagination, while also teaching him about different artists, styles, materials, and techniques. Some of the painters that Norm looks up to are Norman Rockwell and Marc Chegell, however his own inspiration comes from anything and everything, anywhere and everywhere. It could be a personal experience, a picture he saw in a book, a new neon paint, a label in Chinese lettering, or an old computer microchip he found on the sidewalk. He says it's about "not being afraid to look foolish", which he most definitely does not. His paintings are as brilliant as him, and as beautiful as his story.

Norm, who is living with a terminal illness, has achieved what he describes as a "different level of continued living". The day hospice program at the Maycourt Hospice has aided him in doing so, not only by providing him with the opportunity to paint, but by providing him with a social and supportive atmosphere. It's a happier, healthier, and more meaningful lifestyle. A lifestyle that goes far beyond merely existing.

Community Hospice Support

Day Hospice: Our Day Hospice programs offer a supportive and friendly environment for clients to enjoy a ‘day away’. Day Hospice is available at our May Court Hospice from Tuesday to Thursday weekly, at Bells Corners United Church on Tuesdays, and at St. John’s Anglican in Richmond on Thursdays. Activities include music, art and social time as well as nutritious home cooked meals.

In 2013-14, 154 clients participated in one of our five weekly Day Hospice programs. 101 volunteers delivered 9,680 hours of support to clients in Day Hospice. In-Home Support: Our Support Care Nurses and trained volunteers provide client visits that offer companionship, emotional support and comfort measures. Caregivers also benefit from support and respite time.

In 2013-14, 193 clients were supported through our In-Home Support program. 84 volunteers delivered 3,276 hours of In-Home Support services.

Family Support

The Family Support Program offers counselling and therapeutic support to our clients and their caregivers as well as to the bereaved who are grieving the death of a loved one.

In 2013-14, 698 individuals were seen as part of our Family Support program through Nature and Grief Walks, Group Support Sessions, Telephone Support, Bereavement Retreats, Caregiver Retreats, Memorial Services, and one-on-one counselling. 41 volunteers delivered 1,087 hours of service.

Residential Hospice

Our Residential Program provides residential hospice care in a comfortable, home-like setting for persons in the last days and weeks of their life. We currently have nine rooms at our May Court Hospice and ten rooms at our Central West Hospice. Our professional nursing staff and volunteers provide excellent, high quality, dignified and compassionate care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In 2013-14, 374 referrals were made to our Residential Program and we cared for 249 clients. The average length of stay was 19 days. Resident volunteers dedicated 11,770 hours of support for clients. This year we worked with our partners in Champlain to implement a central referral system for admission to hospice palliative care beds. As a result we have reduced the time people have to wait for a hospice bed to less than 3 days on average.

Who We Serve

Between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014, 1,294 individuals benefitted directly from Hospice Care Ottawa's high quality programs and services. Our services reach people across all of the City of Ottawa including surrounding rural areas. We work with our partners in the community and in hospitals to receive referrals for our community hospice support programs and residential hospice beds. Together we help clients and their families access the needed programs and services.

Finance

Treasurer's Report

I am pleased to provide my first report as Treasurer for Hospice Care Ottawa and on our first full year of operations. Our financial position remains strong with over $570,000 of unrestricted net assets to carry forward to the future. The statement of financial position shows the results of our purchase and renovation of the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice with an increase in our capital assets of over $2,582,320. The balance of our bank loan related to this purchase was $996,265 with plans to pay the balance off by December 31, 2014. Revenues for the year were $4,353,988 and reflect the additional Provincial and CCAC funding we received for our Central West location. Successful fundraising and events continue to be critical source of revenue and for this year amounted to over $1,446,000 and over 33% of our total revenue. The dependence on fundraising for our operating capacity remains a constant challenge to the organization. Our expenditures exceeded our revenues by $139,449 however this was our first year after amalgamation and we incurred additional necessary costs as a result of this process. In March we prepared and approved a balanced budget for 2014/2015 but recognize that successful fundraising will be essential to meet this goal. What our financial statements do not reflect are the over 54,000 hours of time we receive from our dedicated volunteers and the continued support by May Court Club. In closing, a special thank you to Kim Sheldrick, our Director Finance and Human Resources , who kept our finances on track during this very busy year. Best Regards, Randy Tivy Treasurer, Board of Directors

Hospice Ottawa West Campaign Update In 2012, Hospice Care Ottawa entered into a partnership with the Bruyère Foundation to raise funds for a full service hospice in Kanata. The Bruyère Foundation launched the Hospice Ottawa West Campaign in January 2013 to raise $6 million dollars to complete the first phase of a city-wide plan to increase the number of hospice beds in our community.

Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice In response to our urgent need for hospice palliative care beds in Ottawa, John Ruddy and William Shenkman made a collective $1 million dollar donation to the Hospice Ottawa West Campaign creating the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice. This is the largest private donation to a hospice in Ottawa and among the largest donations ever made to a hospice in Canadian history. The Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice in Kanata at 110 McCurdy Drive opened its doors to the west end staff of Hospice Care Ottawa in March, 2013. Day Hospice programming hopes to be running out of the newly renovated site in the near future.

Hein House Another key to the success of the campaign was the announcement of a transformational gift by Barbara Hein, wife of the late Roly Hein. Barbara announced a gift of $500,000 towards the building of the 10-bed residence at the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice. This facility will be named “Hein House” in honour of this tremendous generosity and in memory of Roly Hein who was a member of the Hospice Ottawa West Campaign Cabinet and Building Committee.

Gayle's Garden A special project to create a community healing garden in memory of Gayle Madely was launched in July 2013 and a mini two hour radiothon was held at the end of August on the Lowell Green Show. With the help of both CFRA and CTV over $350,000 was raised for Gayle's Garden which will create a serene outdoor space to help patients and their loved ones focus on something pleasurable and beautiful...something to lift the heaviness of their condition or circumstance.

Phase 1 and 2 Nearing Completion Our contractor R.E. Hein worked tirelessly and has done an outstanding job on Phase 2 renovations. The renovations are nothing short of spectacular and we are anxious to show them off. We have so many people to thank especially the building and construction community and the many sub-trades for their outstanding work and tremendous in-kind contributions (Bill Cuff, Laurysen Kitchens, Urban Quarry, C&M Electric, McGonigal Construction, Merkley Building Supply, Gorland and, Durabuilt Construction)...just to name a few.

"I cannot tell you how much it meant to her and to the family that she was able to spend her last days with you. She had suffered so much during the spring and summer, not just pain but terror as she witnessed the deaths of roommates in the hospital. She was de-termined to go to the May Court and, to our astonishment, once she got there, she actually seemed happy. She loved sitting in the garden and watching the river, in the neighbourhood where she had lived as a young mother. Nothing in her objective situation had changed, but she was surrounded by beauty, kindness and peace."

"I am very grateful that she was kept so comfortable in those final days and especially hours. It takes very special people to work at any hospice and this hospice in particular has many angels, as my mother always called all of you. It means everything to us that our mother left this world with such dignity and respect. This was a special gift when older people often don 't get the respect they deserve and have earned in their lives."
