Just one person

“Just one person” is where the philanthropy journey begins. As each

of us walks our own path, we meet other donors who join us, “…and

then another, and another…” All of us, doing just one thing…giving…

and changing so many lives in our community.

2013 was a year of transition and excitement. Jim Sealy, Foundation

president, announced his retirement and Mary Klinger was appointed

as his successor. Jim received the Founders Award at the June 13

Koehler Legacy

Society Celebration

of Generosity.

We received our largest

Guardian Angel gift

to date, a $100,000

anonymous donation

on behalf of 1West-

Behavioral Health. The

family that made the gift

has built a relationship

with Dr. Rick Larson;

this was their first gift

to the Foundation.

For the first time, we are including several pages on UnityPoint

Health – St. Luke’s Hospital. Please give special attention to this

section, which punctuates the importance of our role in supporting

the hospital and its innovative, patient-centered programs.

Looking ahead to 2014, we will be supporting the hospital’s campaign

for Eastern Iowa’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room®, a place

where families with an infant in the NICU or a child in Pediatrics can

rest and gather while staying close to their family members.

Thank you to the many generous donors who continue to give so that

our community has the best health care possible through St. Luke’s

Hospital. We are honored to work with you.

During the last week of his life,

Ron Mahany told his wife Pam,

“Be sure to send thank-you cards

to my nurses.” Remembering

those words nearly 12 years later,

Pam says, “Ron was always think-

ing of others.”

Ron’s caring nature was evident

when, despite the fact that he

was dying, he made it a priori-

ty to establish a memorial fund.

“Ron was very grateful to his

team at St. Luke’s Physical Re-

habilitation Division,” says Ron’s

sister, Linda Neilsen. “It was im-

portant to Ron to stay mobile as

long as possible.” Ron’s physical

therapists helped him strengthen

his muscles and offered encour-

agement. “Ron looked forward to

physical therapy,” says his father,

Gene. “It was hard work but he

enjoyed going.”

Ron would be pleased to know

his memorial fund also helped his

family. “It gave us something to

do, something to focus on after

Ron’s death,” says Pam. She and

Gene met with St. Luke’s Founda-

tion staff to work out the details

of Ron’s memorial fund. “They

suggested an endowment, which

allows us to spend the interest

without touching the principal,”

says Gene. “You don’t need a

million dollars to start an en-

dowment. We did it with $20,000

from family and friends.”

The Ronald L. Mahany Award

is presented annually to three

associates of St. Luke’s Physical

Rehabilitation Division who are

nominated by coworkers and

selected by a committee of

hospital employees. Ron’s family

attends the awards ceremony each

fall and enjoys meeting the recip-

ients, who use their $750 stipend

to attend continuing education

programs. Susan Klopfenstein, a

2013 winner, attended a workshop

on language growth in autistic

preschool children. “I am very

thankful to use these funds for such

an amazing workshop,” she says.

Says Pam, “Ron’s caring presence

continues today through his award.”

2013 Patient Care Excellence Award Winners

St. Luke’s Foundation’s Patient

Care Excellence Award Program

recognizes health care providers

who demonstrate outstanding

achievement in their chosen

field. The Foundation could not

provide these scholarships and

awards without the generosity

from our donors who have a

passion and commitment to fur-

thering health care providers’ ed-

ucation. For more than 30 years,

our donors have created funds

at St. Luke’s Foundation. Today

these funds provide the financial

resources for St. Luke’s associates

to continue their learning.

Philanthropy has made a difference

in the lives of St. Luke’s patients

from the hospital’s earliest days,

when donors gave bed sheets,

fruits and vegetables to be used

for patient care.

Every donor, with his or her gift,

makes an impact on the pro-

grams and services offered at

St. Luke’s. Be that one person to

step forward and inspire others

with your generous act of giving.

“Life’s most persistent

and urgent question

is, ‘What are you

doing for others?’.”

— Martin Luther King Jr.

As in years past, our 2013

employee giving campaign, called

iCare, showed how passionate

associates are about St. Luke’s

and our community. More than

1,000 associates raised $279,689

when they gave to one or more

of the giving opportunities, which

included St. Luke’s Foundation’s

iGrant Program, St. Luke’s Auxil-

iary, United Way and Variety.

Funded through our iCare Cam-

paign, iGrant is an internal grant

program created to provide funds

for equipment, programs and

services that cannot be funded

in other ways. iGrants are dis-

tributed twice a year through

an application process managed

by St. Luke’s Foundation and a

selection committee comprised

of St. Luke’s associates.

Grants ranging from $500 to

$15,000 were awarded to 19

St. Luke’s departments.

Thank you for trusting us to

make decisions towards the

best use of your money.

“I’d like to thank associates

for their support of our iCare

Campaign,” says Mary Klinger,

St. Luke’s Foundation president.

“Donations of any size by just

one employee, and another,

and another truly come togeth-

er to make a difference for our

patients, their families and our

community.”

Cedar Rapids hometown girl

Helen G. Nassif’s life has been

an exciting and fulfilling one. In

Washington, D.C., she attended

George Washington Law School

and became the first woman to

serve on a bank board of direc-

tors. Ms. Nassif also established

a successful real estate develop-

ment and construction company

in Maryland. But no matter where

Ms. Nassif’s journey took her, she

always carried Cedar Rapids and

St. Luke’s in her heart.

Just as she did in her professional

life, Ms. Nassif stepped forward to

lead by example. With a passion

for Cedar Rapids and St. Luke’s,

she has made giving a way of life,

supporting the hospital and shap-

ing how we provide care for our

community. Ms. Nassif’s generos-

ity and vision exemplify the idea

that just one person can have a

transformational impact.

Her most recent gift created the

Helen G. Nassif Community

Cancer Center of Iowa, which

celebrated its opening June 2013.

The Center is dedicated to im-

proving the quality of life for all

cancer patients and their families

through its philosophy of phy-

sician-driven, patient-centered

cancer treatment and care.

In addition to helping change the

way cancer care is provided in

our community, Ms. Nassif has

also transformed care at St. Luke’s

Hospital.

• The Nassif Heart Center (in

honor of her brother, Dr. John

G. Nassif)

• The Helen G. Nassif Center for

Women’s and Children’s Health

• The Helen G. Nassif Pavilion,

the hospital’s new main

entrance

Ms. Nassif shows that the legacy

of one person does make a last-

ing impact. Lives are changed for

the better through her vision and

ongoing commitment. We are

forever grateful for her gifts and

dedication to St. Luke’s.

Tallgrass Business Resources –

a local office furniture, interior

design and office supply com-

pany – believes in supporting

the community where they do

business. The company was

formed in June 2011 when third-

generation owners John and

Phil Wasta of Pioneer Workspace

Solutions in Cedar Rapids and

Dave and Doug Parsons of

Frohwein Office Supply in

Coralville decided to merge.

Tallgrass has donated to St. Luke’s

Foundation’s General Fund in

2012 and 2013 and foresees do-

nating to that fund in the future.

“St. Luke’s Hospital plays a critical

role in the Cedar Rapids health

care community,” says Phil Wasta.

“The hospital is also a key player

in Eastern Iowa’s regional health

care presence.”

While Wasta and his partners

appreciate the hospital’s quality

care, they are equally impressed

with St. Luke’s proactive work

to make Cedar Rapids healthier.

“By supporting the Foundation,

we’re supporting the community

outreach efforts of St. Luke’s in

addition to bricks and mortar,”

says Phil. “St. Luke’s programs

on diabetes prevention and

smoking cessation address many

of the issues that put people in

the hospital. The hospital shares

its expertise to help people live

healthier lives.”

St. Luke’s has been the Wasta

family’s hospital “forever,” says

Phil. “I became more aware of

how the hospital serves the

community when my mom was

on the hospital auxiliary board

several years ago.” Many of

St. Luke’s services came as a sur-

prise to Phil. “Since I had never

used some of their services, like

the Child Protection Center, I

wasn’t aware of all the needs

that were being met.”

When it comes to the entities

that give to non-profits in Cedar

Rapids, Tallgrass is a small player,

explains Phil. “But when enough

small players contribute, their

combined resources make a

significant impact.”

St. Luke’s Foundation received

a $100,000 anonymous Guardian

Angel gift in honor of Dr. Rick

Larsen and the entire 1West staff.

This is the largest Guardian Angel

gift received by UnityPoint Health

– St. Luke’s Foundation.

“We want to honor Dr. Rick Larsen

and the entire 1West staff for the

excellent care they provided our

loved one,” states the anonymous

donor. “Thank you.”

UnityPoint – St. Luke’s Hospital is

one of the largest mental health

providers in Iowa. 1West is a

secure center for older adults

who are experiencing either

acute episodes of mental illness

or dementia. Dr. Larsen has

provided psychiatric care for

St. Luke’s inpatients for decades.

He is well respected by the staff

and his patients.

“We are extremely grateful for

the generosity of this anonymous

donor,” says Mary Klinger, pres-

ident of St. Luke’s Foundation.

“There is often a stigma associated

with mental health or behavioral

health. This Guardian Angel gift

will provide us the opportunity to

talk about mental health in a way

that has never been done before

in our community.”

In 2013 seven Eastern Iowa

organizations were the recipients

of $10,889 in grants as part of the

Foundation’s Rural Healthcare

Grant Program. This program

provides matching grants toward

health care projects that improve

the health and wellness of rural

residents. This year’s matching

grant recipients are:

• Benton County Volunteer

Program received $1,700 to pay

for transportation expenses for

volunteer drivers. This program

provides no-cost transportation

to access non-emergency

medical services for seniors.

• Clarence Ambulance Service

Volunteer Association received

$1,130 to purchase an adult

airway management trainer

torso and a pediatric Advanced

Life Support (ALS) trainer. This

equipment will assist EMS

personnel with basic/advanced

skills of adult and pediatric

airway management, along

with ALS skills associated to

a pediatric patient.

• Jefferson-Monroe Fire Depart-

ment received $1,150 for the

training cost of one Emergency

Medical Services (EMS) student.

• Martelle Fire Department

received $900 for the purchase

tor is an electronic device that

administers an electric shock

of preset voltage to the heart

through the chest wall in an

attempt to restore the normal

rhythm of the heart during

ventricular fibrillation.

• North Benton Ambulance

received $1,584 to purchase

one Stair Chair. A Stair Chair

is designed to help transport

patients through tight spaces

and up or down stairs, safely

and efficiently.

• Retired and Senior Volunteer

to pay for transportation

expenses for volunteer drivers.

This program provides trans-

portation services for Jones

County adults over the age of

55 to non-emergency medical

appointments outside of the

county.

• Volunteer Services of Cedar

County received $825 to pay

for transportation expenses for

volunteer drivers. This program

provides personalized transpor-

tation for frail adults in Cedar

County who need rides to

non-emergency medical

appointments.

St. Luke’s Foundation awarded

the first Rural Healthcare Grants

in 1980 to Mechanicsville Fire

and East Poweshiek Ambulance.

Since then, the Foundation has

awarded more than $290,000

in matching grants to support

emergency medical services

in Benton, Cedar, Delaware,

Iowa, Johnson, Jones, Linn and

Poweshiek counties.

The Foundation created the Rural

Healthcare Endowment through

corporate and individual dona-

tions. Additional gifts build the

endowment to continue funding

rural health care needs.

2013A year in review

The future looks very strong for UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids as it was recently announced it’s the first and only health care organization in Iowa to be selected to join the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Specialists at UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids can now consult Mayo Clinic knowledge and expertise using a variety of elec-tronic tools and services and connect directly with Mayo Clinic experts on complex diagnosis and treatment plans.

The collaboration benefits patients in Eastern Iowa in many ways, including:

• More patients stay home and avoid unnecessary travel for answers to complex medical questions

• High-quality, low-cost care right here in Cedar Rapids

• Doctors connecting on patient care at no additional cost to patients

“We would like to acknowledge the generous support this collabo-ration is receiving from St. Luke’s Foundation,” said Ted Townsend, UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids

president and CEO. “They rec-ognized this innovative program was something special to offer our patients and community and are funding the first year subscription to the Mayo Clinic Care Network. We are grateful for their tremen-dous support and vision.”

To learn more about the collabo-ration between UnityPoint Health doctors and Mayo Clinic experts go to unitypoint.org/mayo.

Dear friends,

Changes came fast and furiously

in 2013. Nationally, the health

care industry started to move

away from fee-for-service and

began placing a value on patient

outcomes. We knew this time

would come and St. Luke’s and

UnityPoint Health are uniquely

positioned to lead these changes,

which focus on care for a lifetime,

not a visit, test or admission alone.

Our network of providers incor-

porates all levels of care, from

hospital to doctor to home health,

and spans a sizable geographical

region. We are making a strong

impact in the communities we

serve. We are leading the change

toward health management and

disease prevention all while im-

proving care and lowering costs.

It makes sense our health system,

the Iowa Health System, chose

to change its name to UnityPoint

Health. The new name signifies

we are approaching health care in

a new and

better way,

focusing

more on

patients

and the

coordina-

tion of

their care.

And be-

cause we

are no longer just an Iowa organi-

zation, this new name also better

represents our partners in Illinois

and Wisconsin.

We have developed a team-based

approach with our clinic and

home health partners over the

years, and the name UnityPoint

Health demonstrates the way our

network has become a point of

unity for our patients. By unifying

all of the fragmented components

of a complex health care system,

our doctors, nurses and staff have

a renewed emphasis on putting

the patient and their family at the

center of everything we do. It is a

new and powerful way to ensure

we continue to live our mission,

which is to give the health care

we’d like our loved ones to

receive.

We are honored to care for you

and your family.

Patient-centered Medical Home

UnityPoint Clinics are undergoing

a transformation aimed at pro-

viding a team-based approach

to care called Patient-Centered

Medical Home (PCMH). Studies

indicate this approach to primary

care saves money, reduces un-

necessary services and improves

health.

The goal of the team is to im-

prove coordination of care.

The medical home serves as the

source for prioritized health

issues, striving to clarify and

prioritize health conditions.

Research-based guidelines are

then utilized to address problems

in a manner that results in the

best outcomes for every patient.
