2013 FUNDRAISING REPORT

Keeping the public in public schools. That is the essence of everything the Prichard Committee does. For over three decades now, our strength has been the thousands of parents, educators, students and other business and civic leaders who share with us the common cause of ensuring excellence in education.2013 is definitive in that it represents both the genesis and culmination of sustained efforts from Kentuckians wanting the best possible education opportunities for our students. Consider just a few recent inroads related to some priority issues:

Pre-K: Our Business Leaders for a Strong Start and our early care and education partners around the state worked to propel investing in early childhood education to the top of policymakers’ priority lists in preparation for the 2014 legislative session. We were honored to receive the Kentucky Nonprofit Inaugural Voice Award for our public campaign for the HANDS bill, which supports home visiting and training for new parents.

Parent Engagement: 2013 marked the 17th year of the Governor’s Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership (GCIPL). Three institutes were held over the year in Louisville, Florence and Prestonsburg, granting 87 parents our signature training — on top of the 1,700 other graduates of our program — and equipping them with the tools to navigate the state’s accountability system and advocate for improved schools for all Kentucky students.

Teacher Effectiveness: Our Team on Teacher Effectiveness, a broad mix of parents, business leaders, legislators and educators, released its final report: Strengthening the Teaching Profession in Kentucky. We presented our findings and recommendations to the Interim Joint Education Committee and at the Budget Review Committee on Postsecondary Education and will continue to convene to ensure meaningful follow up.

Adequate Funding: The Prichard Committee held an Education Summit in conjunction with state education allies focused on restoring investment in K-12 education to pre-recessionary levels. A statewide “Kids Can’t Wait” campaign emerged, leading to a series of local rallies, generating widespread media attention for the cause, and laying a firm foundation for our legislative push. These efforts led to restoration of school funding close to 2008 levels.

Student Voice: After months of student-led deliberation, 2013 marked the launch of our Student Voice Team. The group spent the year designing and testing a model that would support Kentucky youth as full education policy partners. From conducting roundtables with students from Whitesburg to Bowling Green to publishing commentaries related to the significance of student voice in education policy to testifying before a legislative committee on the role of students in the teacher feedback loop to leading a statewide social media campaign inspiring young people to advocate for increased school funding, the team has fast become essential in our work to improve Kentucky schools. We appreciate our friends acknowledged in the following pages who have taken the additional step of supporting us financially. We hope the work itself shows not only how seriously we take your investment, but also that we never take your generosity for granted.
