The NorPac Conference has evolved over the past 30 yearsfrom an initial California membership to the current eastand west blend. In 1998, the growth and development ofthe NorPac as an NCAA single-sport conference was as-sisted by a three-year grant from the United States OlympicCommittee (USOC) and the NCAA, as well as by a partner-ship with and support from the United States Field HockeyAssociation (USFHA). Through the grant opportunity, therestructuring of the conference included previous membersDavis and Elkins College, Missouri State, Saint Louis Univer-sity and current original members California, Pacific andStanford. Both Appalachian State and Davidson acceptedinvitations to join in 2000, followed by Radford in 2001.

Longwood was added to the conference in 2005 as a provi-sional member while reclassifying to a Division I member-ship. After fulfilling NCAA reclassification requirements,Longwood became eligible for its first conference tourna-ment in 2007 and hosted the 2008 championship. The Nor-Pac Conference welcomed the reestablished UC Davisprogram as an eighth member in July 2008 and the Aggiesstarted a full conference schedule and participated in theirfirst league tournament in 2009.

Continuing to expand the conference, Liberty University isthe newest member to the league. Liberty announcedsponsorship of an inaugural program in November, 2010and began competition as an independent in 2011. NorPacofficially welcomed the Flames as the ninth member on July1, 2012. Liberty joins Appalachian State, Davidson, Long-wood and Radford in the East Division. California, UC Davis,Pacific and Stanford comprise the West Division.

The round-robin league divisional play will culminate withthe conference championship tournament. In 2013, thetournament will be hosted by Liberty with an 8-teambracket that will include the four West Division teams andthe four top seeds from the East Division.

Since 1999, the NorPac Field Hockey Conference has re-ceived an NCAA play-in opportunity or a conference auto-matic qualification (2005). Stanford University also receivedan at-large bid to the 2011 NAA Championship. In over adecade, NorPac representatives are 10-3 in NCAA play-ingames. This year’s league champion will travel to the homefield of the Atlantic-10 Conference champion for a play-ingame on Tuesday, November 12.

Sixth-year head coach Iain Byers and his young squad are look-ing to improve and impress in 2013. The Lancers enter the newseason following an 8-13 campaign from a year ago, including asecond-place, regular-season finish in the Northern Pacific FieldHockey Conference (NorPac) East Division. The team is led by atalented group of 14 returners, while eight newcomers havebeen added to this year’s roster.

“We’ve got a point to prove against a number of teams that weshould have played better against,” said Byers. “Historically,we’ve made a lot of big strides each year and last year we stut-tered a little bit, but we want to get back out there and continueto improve.”

Despite being a relatively young team, Byers believes he has theright mix of players to put together a successful run.

“We are a young team,” explained Byers. “We have six upper-classmen and then 16 freshmen and sophomores. However, weare very dynamic and very athletic, and although we are veryyoung, we have a lot of experience and playing time.”

KeYS to SUCCeSSWhen asked what he thought the team’s keys to success for theupcoming season would be, Coach Byers’ answer was easy:keep it simple and work to increase their game IQ.

“I think we’re going to have to do the basics very well,” com-mented the Canterbury, England native. “Something that we re-ally focused on in the spring that we want to continue to focuson is how we approach the game from an analytical point ofview. We can run with the best team in the world, but we haveto be able to think with the best team in the world. Thinking atthat level is hard, but we can do it if we want to. That will be thebiggest stride. If we are successful, it will be because we didthat.”

Game PlanAccording to the sixth-yearcoach, being a young squadwill not hinder the Lancers.Byers explained that sincehis entire team is extremelyathletic this season, hisgame plan will revolvearound sticking to the ba-sics and letting the student-athletes’ true talent shine.

“Because we are young, Ithink our game plan will beto use some simple sys-tems, but we’re going to tryto approach them in a verylogical and thoughtful man-ner,” said Byers. “We’re notgoing to be doing tons ofdifferent things, but we’regoing to have one or twothings that we do very welland tweak those to give uslots of variation and options.”

leaderShiPByers feels he has a great group of seniors, who all bring some-thing different to the squad. If they mesh well together and un-derstand each other’s strengths and weaknesses, then he feels

Longwood will have a very good leadership group.

“Stacey de Grandhomme leads through her example -- how hardshe works and the level she holds herself to,” commentedByers. “Kaye Goulding is very vocal. She sees the big picture andknows how to get to the big picture. Nicole Segala is very goodat bringing people from different groups together and gettingthem to buy in. Finally, Caitlin Smith is just on point with every-thing. She’s very intelligent, she knows what she wants andshe’s not too worried about stepping on a few toes to get whatis best for the team.”

While the senior class is a tal-ented leadership group in it-self, Byers explained that hewill be looking for student-athletes from every class tostep up and help guide thisprogram.

“We are also going to belooking for leadership byclass. For example, thosewho will be doing the rightthings at the right timeswhen no one is watchingwhat decisions are beingmade. What those less obvi-ous leaders do is very impor-tant, too.”

newComerSByers is confident that sev-eral members of his incom-ing class will make an impact

right away.

“As a group, the freshmenare great athletes,” explained Byers. “They seem very moti-vated and seem to understand what we’re trying to achieve andhow we’re trying to improve. They make up a third of the team,so they will define a lot of our success. We’re expecting a lotfrom them. We’re expecting them to push and become as im-portant as they want to be. If they want to get that starting po-sition, they’re going to have to work hard, but they can get it.I’m sure they will all challenge themselves and the rest of theteam to be a good addition to the squad.”

forwardSLongwood’s forward line is its most experienced, includingthree of the team’s top scorers from a year ago. Junior JessicaDiaz returns as the Lancers’ most productive attacker after tally-ing 12 goals and four assists for 28 total points in 2012. Sopho-mores Jennifer Burris and Kim Ruiter, who finished last seasonwith 21 and 17 points, respectively, will look to add to the offen-sive effort. In addition, sophomore Nicole Deckard and juniorKelly Fay will be counted on to add depth to the position.

“Up front we’ve got a lot of people who want to improve,” saidByers. “We’ve got a lot of goal scorers in there. We scored moregoals last year than we’ve ever scored in Division I.”

midfieldA veteran leader on both sides of the ball, senior Stacey deGrandhomme looks to pace Longwood once again. The 5-7 mid-fielder led the team with 17 goals and 38 total points in 2012,

OUTLOOKwhile earning NorPac East Division Player of the Year and NFHCAAll-South Region First Team accolades.

“Stacey will work hard to lead what is probably our youngest, but most dynamic section of the field,” explained Byers. “She istalented and versatile and we expect great things out of her thisseason.”

Byers also expects severalfreshmen and sophomores tofill this position.

“Three or four freshmenplayed a lot of minutes therelast year, so we’re excitedthat they’re going to push on.Meghan O’Connor, who sawtime in the midfield last year,is very solid and consistent.Hollie MacDonald is very dy-namic. Incoming freshmanLindsay Lysher will be very dy-namic in the midfield, aswell.”

defenSeCaitlin Smith, who saw actionin all 21 of the Lancers’ gamesin 2012, will be the backboneof the squad’s defensive linethis season.

“Caitlin played most of the minutes this spring,” said Byers. “Sheknows what she needs to work on and is improving every day.She is an extremely coachable player.”

As for the other defensive positions, Byers says they are up forgrabs.

“The outside positions will be interesting because we’ve gotsome freshmen coming in who could take them, but we alsohave experienced, veteran players, so it’s really a battle. EmilyLeonard got injured half way through the year last year, so she’scoming back and is very determined to really push that group.Jordan Chapman is a very good defendercoming in and newcomer Ellen Ross willbe part of the back group, too. RachelLombardi redshirted last year, but hasmade leaps and bounds and we’re look-ing forward to her see time.”

GoalKeePerSThis season, the Lancers have three ca-pable goalkeepers who will compete tosee playing time. Last year, sophomoreMeg Mitchell saw action in a team-high17 games, turning away 76 shots for a.613 save percentage. Kaye Goulding, asenior returning from an injury, has a.747 career save percentage and a 1.94career goals against average. In addition, freshman Lauren Bernard will be lookingto push for a spot this year, as well.

“We’ve got three goalkeepers this year,”commented Byers. “Meg had a phenomenal freshman year.Kaye is coming back from an injury last year, but she had a very

good spring and we’re ex-pecting her to be competi-tive. Lauren Bernard, a newaddition who comes from agood area and a good pro-gram, is going to push, aswell, so we’re excited tohave three goalkeepers atsuch a high level.”

SChedUleThe Lancers' campaign willbe highlighted by eighthome games, which will beplayed at the AthleticsComplex in Farmville, in ad-dition to nine road gamesand two neutral site con-tests. Longwood will wel-come Saint Joseph'sUniversity for the seasonopener on Saturday, Aug.31 beginning at 1 p.m.

“This marks the 89th yearof field hockey at Longwood and we are all very excited to get itstarted,” said Byers. “We have a great schedule that includes alot of teams that we should be very competitive with. The teamis more tactually aware this year and we have worked on under-standing the game as a team this spring, which will allow us toapproach each match in a more successful manner.

“We don't play any back-to-back games this year, so we knowwe will be better prepared for each contest than in previous sea-sons.”

This year's Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac)schedule features a home-and-home series against each of theother four East Division conference members. The Lancers willopen league play at home against Appalachian State Universityon Saturday, September 14 at 12 p.m.

“Our conference games are scheduled throughout the season, allowing us time to prepare for each game,” explained Byers.

“We know we can be competitive andwe want to regain that NorPac Easttitle. As a team, we have the ability todo it, and as long as we are focusedand work hard on all facets of ourgame, we can definitely be in the run-ning.”

PoStSeaSonThe NorPac Conference Tournamentwill be hosted by in-state rival LibertyUniversity on November 7-9.

“We’re excited for the NorPac Tourna-ment,” concluded Byers. “It’s rightaround the corner at Liberty, so it’snot too far away. As much as we lovehosting, sometimes it’s nice to be onthe road because it has a bit more of a

tournament atmosphere. Stanford andCal will be strong as usual, but we’re

confident in the East Division. If we can win our division, then weput ourselves in the best position, so that’s our target.”

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY

Page 42: 2013 Longwood Field Hockey Guide

LONGWOOD UNIVERSITY With a legacy of learning dating back more than 170 years,Longwood University has developed a meaningful learning en-vironment that extends far beyond the classroom. Founded in1839 as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, the schoolwas a pioneer first in private and later in public education. Thestate of Virginia acquired the school in 1884 and renamed it asthe Normal School, the first state institution of higher learningfor women in Virginia. Over the years, the school expanded itscurricula and had a succession of names, becoming LongwoodCollege in 1949 and fully coeducational in 1976. On April 24,2002, history was again made at Longwood when Gov. MarkWarner signed legislation that designated Longwood as a uni-versity, effective July 1, 2002.

The legacy thatbegan in 1839 con-tinues today asLongwood Univer-sity offers morethan 100 majors, mi-nors and concentra-tions to more than4,800 students.Given its historicalroots, LongwoodUniversity enjoys anenviable reputationfor teacher prepara-tion. But the excel-lence has expandedthroughout the uni-versity with strongprograms in the lib-eral arts and sci-ences, business, and

professional and pre-professional programs.

Today the coeducational, comprehensive state university com-prises four separate colleges: the Cook-Cole College of Arts andSciences, the College of Business and Economics, the Collegeof Education and Human Services and the College of Graduateand Professional Studies. The graduate college offers programsin education, communication sciences and disorders, Englishand sociology, as well as an MBA degree.

Under the leadership of Interim President Marge Connelly,Longwood is committed to developing citizen leaders and pro-vides a meaningful learning environment. Students get an ex-cellent grounding in theory then translate their newly acquiredknowledge into action by doing research, internships, field-work and community service. Recognizing the value of experi-ential learning, Longwood is one of the few universities in thecountry to require all students to complete an internship orsimilar learning experience before graduation. Additionally,Longwood was the first institution in Virginia to require thatevery freshman have a laptop computer. Technology is inte-grated throughout the learning process—an essential elementfor preparing the leaders of tomorrow.

The Greenwood Library supports Longwood’s mission ofdeveloping citizen leaders through a comprehensive array ofservices and resources. It is a learning-centered environmentthat fosters intellectual exchange, scholarly communication, cultural enrichment, lifelong information literacy and creativeexpression. In addition, the library provides more than 343,000titles, 8,000 DVDs, 5,100 CDs, 900 print journal subscriptions, and 160 electronic databases with access to more than 51,000full-text electronic journals. The library also provides integratedtechnology for information retrieval from libraries throughoutthe world. This state-of-the-art facility is named in honor ofLongwood’s 22nd president, Dr. Janet Daly Greenwood whoserved from 1981 to 1987.

Longwood provides a range of business services to the re-gion and state through the Longwood Small Business Develop-ment Center, while the Longwood Center for the Visual Artsserves as an important and innovative study center and culturalresource for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Longwood University also has a tremendous economic andcultural impact on Farmville and the surrounding communities.A study conducted by the Longwood Small Business Develop-ment Center estimates that university employees, students andvisitors spent more than $90 million in 2007—with 66 percentof that amount being spent in Farmville and the eight surround-ing counties. The Longwood campus, located in the heart of historic Far-mville, Va., provides excellent facilities while reflecting thecharm, beauty and character associated with its long heritage. The campus community was enhanced with the opening ofBrock Commons, a beautiful pedestrian promenade that pro-vides a central focal point for the Longwood campus whileeliminating traffic congestion and safety hazards. Fountains, walkways, outdoor sculpture and beautiful landscaping con-tribute to Brock Commons, creating a parklike atmosphere forstudents, faculty, staff and the public. Longwood’s signature building, Ruffner Hall, was rededicatedon April 23, 2005, and replicates the university’s most belovedbuilding and its beautiful rotunda, dating to the 1880s, whichburned on April 24, 2001, while undergoing a $12 million reno-vation. The original eight paintings on the interior of the ro-tunda dome, created in 1905 by the Italian-born artist EugeneD. Monfalcone of Richmond, have been returned to the domefollowing an extensive restoration that was under way prior tothe fire. The historic Joan of Arc statue, known affectionatelyas “Joanie on the Stony,” was also restored recently and re-turned to its place of honor on the main floor beneath the ro-tunda. The larger-than-life sculpture is a reproduction of thefamous 1870 original created by French sculptor Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu. The statue was a gift of the Class of 1914 andsymbolizes Joan of Arc as the patron saint of Longwood.

Ruffner Hall was reconstructed in the classic style based on theoriginal blueprints and drawings from the state archives in Rich-mond. The 83,143-square-foot building houses 22 classrooms, four ac-ademic departments, the offices of the Vice President for Aca-demic Affairs and the deans of the College of Graduate andProfessional Studies and the Cook-Cole College of Arts and Sci-ences, named for benefactors Dr. John R. Cook (Class of 1952)and Dr. Waverly M. Cole. Between Ruffner Hall and Blackwell Hall, a sunlit hallway formsthe Cole Gallery, which features a collection of more than 500pieces of 19th-century Bohemian glass, Meissen porcelain andEnglish pottery donated to the Longwood Center for the VisualArts by Dr. Cole. Standing guard over this rare collection of dec-orative arts, with her sword held high, is the recently renovatedequestrian statue of Joan of Arc, or “Joanie on the Pony,” byAnna Vaughn Hyatt Huntington. Adjoining the Cole Gallery is Blackwell Hall, opened in 1920 asthe campus dining hall. This historic facility, which survived theGreat Fire of 2001, was named in the mid-1970s in memory ofDr. Herbert R. Blackwell, professor of English and dean of thecollege. Today, following a recent renovation and conversion,Blackwell Hall has a new role providing space for social, culturaland educational events for the campus and community. Alongwith Blackwell Hall, the extensive renovation included the ad-jacent Virginia and Prince Edward meeting rooms.

The Chichester Science Center opened Dec. 6, 2005. The 70,822-square-foot facility includes 23 classrooms and laboratories, 47 fac-ulty offices and additional research space for both undergraduateand graduate research projects. The building, which was namedin 2007 in honor of John H. and Karen Williams Chichester (Classof 1974), features a state-of-the-art, climate-controlled environ-ment with safety ventilation systems and hazardous materialssafeguards, as well as a high-tech infrastructure for classrooms, laboratories and distance-learning facilities. A greenhouse andherbarium, housing the world’s largest collection of Virginia plantspecimens, are located on the roof. More recently, a multifaceted Health and Fitness Center openedin August 2007. COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIAThe Commonwealth of Virginia is one of the original 13 colonies.Named for the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth I of England, Virginiawas England’s first successful overseas colony and the site ofthe first permanent English settlement in America. West Vir-ginia was part of Virginia until 1863. Virginia’s rich political heritage helped shape the democraticprinciples on which the United States was founded. Virginiaplayed an important role in the American Revolution (1775-1783), and it entered the Union as the 10th of the original 13states on June 25, 1788. During the American Civil War (1861-1865) the state’s capital, Richmond, was also capital of the Con-federacy. The state has long been nicknamed Old Dominion. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, andJames Monroe, all Virginians, were founding fathers of theUnited States and were among the first five U.S. presidents.Virginia is also the birthplace of U.S. presidents William HenryHarrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Virginia is the 35th largest state in the United States, boundedon the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the north and east byMaryland and the District of Columbia, on the west by West Vir-ginia and Kentucky, and on the south by Tennessee and NorthCarolina. According to the 2010 national census, Virginia’s populationwas 8,001,024, ranking it 12th among the states. Virginia Beach(435,619) is one of the most popular resort destinations on theEast Coast, as well as Virginia’s largest city. Richmond (192,913)is the state capital and a center of banking and insurance, andof both retail and wholesale trade. The Naval Base at Norfolk(229,112) and the Naval Shipyard at Portsmouth (101,377) em-ploy thousands of civilians and military personnel. Hampton(145,017) is important for its aviation activities such as LangleyAir Force Base and a National Aeronautics and Space Adminis-tration (NASA) facility. In Newport News (178,281) is a shipyardthat builds naval ships, including aircraft carriers. Alexandria(136,974) is part of the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.Lynchburg (67,720) is the site of light industries. Roanoke(91,552) is the largest city in western Virginia.

Civilian and military employment, mostly with the federal gov-ernment, is an essential part of the Virginia economy. The Pen-tagon, which houses the Department of Defense, is located inVirginia and is the leading federal employer in the northern partof the state. There are also important military bases in Virginia, particularly the massive complex of army, navy, and air forcebases in the vicinity of Norfolk.

Average January temperatures range from less than 32°F in thewest to more than 42°F in southeastern Virginia. Average Julytemperatures range from more than 78°F in the southeast toless than 68°F in the western mountains. Total precipitationranges from about 35 to more than 50 inches. Snowfalls aremoderate, except in the mountain regions. Besides Virginia, three other states - Kentucky, Massachusettsand Pennsylvania - use the term commonwealth as part of theirofficial names. The delegates to the convention in Williams-burg, when the first Constitution of Virginia was adopted onJune 29, 1776, used commonwealth as the name for the newform of government. It is very likely they had in mind the Puri-tans’ rebellion against the Crown in England more than 100years earlier. Pennsylvania and Massachusetts also chose to be called com-monwealths after independence from Great Britain. The other10 former colonies took the name “state,” the term used in theDeclaration of Independence. Kentucky was once part of Vir-ginia. When Kentuckians joined the Union as the 15th state in1792, it also kept the name commonwealth.
