3 2013 Metro Volunteers Guide
Greetings:
Volunteering is an important part of building our Colorado community. By volunteering you provide a valuable service to our neighborhoods, schools, health facilities and community organizations. Your talents and skills are unique to you, and sharing them with people in need you help us all succeed as a community. Whether educating children, aiding the ill, enriching culture, protecting the environment or feeding the hungry, your favorite organization needs your help.
Colorado volunteers make a positive difference in communities all around the State. In 2011, more than 1. 3 million people in Colorado volunteered more than 144.9 million hours of service contributing more than $3.2 billion in value to communities and organizations around the state. Not only did organizations benefit from this contribution, many volunteers gained valuable work experience leading to employment.
Serve Colorado, the Governor’s Commission on Community Service, strives to build a culture of citizenship, service and responsibility in Colorado. Serve Colorado promotes volunteerism and service as a means to strengthen communities through days of service, special initiatives, and community partnerships. They address community needs by administering AmeriCorps State funding that allows AmeriCorps members to serve in nonprofit organizations and government agencies throughout Colorado. Serve Colorado also encourages residents to take part in organized days of service throughout the year, including Colorado Cares Day.
My sincere thanks to Metro Volunteers and the Denver VOICE who are promoting and supporting meaningful volunteer opportunities during National Volunteer Week, April 21-27, 2013.
Please consider volunteering or increasing your commitment to community service. The rewards are immediate, lasting, and deeply appreciated.
Sincerely,
John W. HickenlooperGovernor
