Every four minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer like Leukemia. That’s a frightening but all too real statistic. But, the “cure for blood cancer is in the hands of ordinary people.”

Members of the Miami Hurricanes football team recruited bone marrow donors with the University of Miami community during Wednesday’s third annual Marrow Donor Drive along the Green.

“I would like to thank everyone in the UM community that participated in Wednesday’s event to support the Be The Match® Registry,” head coach Al Golden said. “Stewardship and gratitude are very instrumental components in the development of young people and our team has demonstrated these values consistently every year. I am extremely proud that our team was able to register 216 people during the five-hour event.

“Thank you to the University of Miami student body and campus commu-nity members who decided to make a difference and join the Be The Match® Registry,” Golden said. “Our Director of Player Development Ryan McNamee did a tremendous job organizing our event yet again for the sixth consecutive year and a special thanks is also in order to the Community Blood Centers of Florida for all of their dedication & effort in the quest to save lives through marrow donation.”

Players handed out flyers and recruited participants from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. during the WellCanes Farmer’s Market. The cause left an indelible mark on many players took a photo with a UM freshman named John, who is a cancer survivor and bone marrow transplant recipient.

The Marrow Donor Drive also holds a special place for Golden, whose teams also participated with the Be The Match® Registry at Temple Univer-sity. Temple graduate extern Marc Schaffer, who volunteered to register for the bone marrow drive as a freshman in 2008, donated his marrow earlier this week.

“The Bone Marrow Drive is a two-fold process,” UM Director of Player Development Ryan McNamee said. “It’s us giving back to the community and raising awareness for the National Marrow Donor Registry, but it’s all our guys working together for a common goal. Today is about teamwork, com-munication and getting the word out there for a great cause.”

WR Phillip Dorsett, RBs Duke Johnson and Dallas Crawford, DB AJ High-smith, QB Ryan Williams and LB Tyriq McCord were just a few of the many players handing out flyers and conversing with their fellow students all over campus and along the Green. From there, players were able to direct potential donors to both the registration tent and to the Miami Scoops ice cream stand, which provided a free scoop to whoever took part in the registry.

University of Miami’s football program was selected to pro-duce the 2013 NFL High School Player Development Program’s Instructional DVD set, which is presented by the National Guard. More than 16,000 instructional DVDs will be distributed this week.

“With player safety being the top priority of the NFL Com-missioner, Coach Golden’s Miami Hurricanes video emphasizes the best practices for teaching the fundamentals of blocking and tackling,” said Ray Anderson, Executive Vice President of Football Operations for the NFL. “The production will serve as a guideline for all youth and high school football coaches.”

It is the second time that head coach Al Golden and his staff has been selected to produce the DVD set. In 2010 while at Temple, Golden’s staff also developed the video set, which was lauded by NFL Football Operations for their exceptional presenta-tion.

“Coach Golden has always been an advocate of teaching safe and proper fundamentals that are transferrable from the youth level to professional,” said Jerry Horowitz, Director of High School Player Development in Football Operations for the NFL. “The 2013 Miami Hurricane video produced by Coach Golden and his outstanding staff emphasizes the proper way to set up drills and the best practices for teaching blocking and tackling.”

“To be selected by the NFL to produce a DVD for its annual HSPD program is a tremendous honor for the University of Miami Football program,” Golden said. “It’s also a great honor for our staff to be chosen for the second time in four years for this program.”

“We are building something special at the University of Miami and this is an amazing branding opportunity for the University of Miami,” Golden said. “Not only is the ‘U’ one of the most iconic brands in all of college football, but it will now be distributed to every single high school in the United States. That’s phenom-enal.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to HSPD Direc-tor Jerry Horowitz and the NFL for believing the mission of the Miami Football program. I’d also like to thank our entire coaching and operations staff, Video Coordinator Stu Cramer as well as assistant video coordinator Jason Spitulnik for their commitment to excellence and their generosity in delivering the ‘U’ brand to more than 20,000 high schools and two million prospective students across the country.”

The Miami Hurricanes and head coach Al Golden offers a great collection of free drills and tips for the sole purpose of assisting youth and coaches. For more football fundamental videos from the Hurricanes, visit the Hurricane Football Coaches Association at hfbca.theusports.com.

If you are a football student-athlete in grades 6-12, you can experience firsthand the techniques and fundamentals being taught by Coach Golden and his staff on the NFL HSPD video by attending the Al Golden Football Camp, LLC at the University of Miami this June. SPRING SCRIMMAGE RECAPS

SPRING SCRIMMAGE 1March 23 • Traz Powell Stadium• Miami

Photo Recap: Traz Powell

The University of Miami Hurricanes football team completed its first spring scrimmage in front of more than 2,000 fans at Traz Powell Stadium.

Saturday’s 90-minute scrimmage simulated different game situations, including goal-line and red-zone scenarios.

“It’s a good start today, we learned a lot about our guys,” head coach Al Golden said. “There are really only 5-6 guys that weren’t with us in the fall. They showed up (to play) today.

“Those guys had a great opportunity in front of them,” Golden said. “We had more penalties than (we) want and the tempo not as crisp as (we) want. Herb Waters and Dallas Crawford played well as did Alex Figueroa on defense.”

Miami’s five quarterbacks - senior Stephen Morris, junior Ryan Williams, redshirt freshmen Gray Crow and Preston Dewey and freshman Garrison Lassiter - completed passes to 12 different Hurricanes receivers.

The offense’s lone touchdown came on a Morris pass to Herb Waters, while the defense racked up two interceptions on Morris.

Sophomore Matt Goudis was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts, including a 49-yarder.

SPRING SCRIMMAGE 2April 5 • Staver Field• Naples

Photo Recap: Naples

After torrential rains paved the way for clear skies and a cool breeze, the Miami Hurricanes football team completed its second spring scrimmage in front of 3,000 fans at Naples High School.

Similar to last month’s scrimmage at Traz-Powell Stadium, Friday’s 90-minute scrimmage simulated different game situations, including goal-line, red-zone scenarios and two-minute drills.

“I thought our tempo was better [from the last scrimmage] and we didn’t have a lot of penalties except for the two during the goal-line situations at the beginning,” head coach Al Golden said. “I thought we were crisp, completed good passes and we did some good things on both sides of the ball. We kicked the ball fairly well, too.

“We had 60 plays on offense with the first team and 55 plays with the (second team),” Golden said. “Not a complete game, but on the cusp of it.

Miami quarterbacks Stephen Morris, Ryan Williams and Gray Crow combined to throw five TD passes to three different receivers. The Canes were without the services of WR Phillip Dorsett, who was in Gainesville with the track team at the Florida Relays.

Fort Myers native Dallas Crawford had two receiving touchdowns, while Rashawn Scott and Allen Hurns combined for three scores.

Big plays on defense came in the form of sacks by Anthony Chickillo, Tyriq McCord and Kelvin Cain, while Alex Irastorza, Fort Myers native Nate Dortch and Cain.

“I want to thank Naples High school for helping make tonight’s scrimmage happen,” Golden said.
