undreds of miles oftrails throughoutN o r t h - C e n t r a lWashington provideentertainment to
countless snowmobileenthusiasts, both local andfrom out of town.
But the trails don’t becomepristine roads for riding ontheir own.
Snowmobile clubs, advisory committees and trailsassociations organizevolunteers groups to clearbrush and maintain the trailsand paths for riders to enjoy.
One such group, theMountain Trails GroomingAssociation, regularly groomsmore than 200 miles worth oftrails in the Methow Valley
area. “We’re ready to groom any
time we get enough snow,”past president Jim Vannicesaid.
The maintained trails arealso used by cross-countryskiers, dog-sledders and hikerswith snowshoes.
The grooming effort isquite an endeavor, Vannicesaid. From December to theend of March, the MountainTrails Grooming Associationtypically spends three days aweek, eight to 10 hours a day, maintaining trails.
Even long before snowstarts falling, members taketime using power saws to clearbrush from the trails, Vannicesaid.
The group is made entirelyof volunteers, but does receive
some funding fromWashington State Parks andthe Recreation andConservation Office.
Okanogan County PublicWorks also receives money fortrail maintenance fromWashington State Parks.
The county maintains trailsbased on how much statefunding it receives andrecommendations of theOkanogan CountySnowmobile Advisory Board,JoAnn Stansbury of the PublicWorks Department said.
The advisory board, whichfeatures eight members, meetsat 6 p.m. on the first Mondayof every month fromNovember through March atthe Okanogan County PublicWorks Building, 2886 U.S.Highway 97. Meetings are
open to the public. In the past, the county has
often groomed trails inConconully and Tunk Creek.

Snowmobiles act as a rescue toolThe Chronicle
side from the manyrecreational uses ofsnowmobiles, lawenforcement andrescue agencies
around the region are alsotaking advantage of theirability to trek through toughterrain.
The Okanogan CountySheriff’s Office has threesnowmobiles it uses, both forroutine patrols and search andrescue, Sheriff Frank Rogerssaid.
“During the winter time, they’re great,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ferry CountySearch and Rescue also hassnowmobiles available to use,President C.M. Sam Jenkinssaid. This year, twosnowmobiles were donated to
the group. It also has use ofseveral snowmobiles owned byindividual members.
Plus, the U.S. Border Patrolhas assisted Search and Rescue
by loaning its snowmobileswhen needed.
Jenkins said in the twoyears he’s been the president ofFerry County Search and
Rescue, there have been onlytwo instances wheresnowmobiles were needed.
“I don’t think anybodywould be stupid enough to govery far on an ungroomedtrail,” he said.
Rogers said his deputiesroutinely use the snowmobilesfor checking camp locationsand assisting Forest Servicerangers.
Rogers said needingsnowmobiles is not commonfor Search and Rescue, butevery year the vehicles are putinto use.
“People get broke down orlost,” he said. “Most of the timeit’s over in the Methow.”
In addition to the county’sthree vehicles, there are severalSearch and Rescue volunteerswho have snowmobiles thatcan assist when needed.
