OKANOGAN – The fairgroundshave seen many changesthroughout the years, and this yearis no exception.

The main entertainment stage, photography exhibit and homeeconomics area are expected tosport new looks.

“We’re getting everything allcleaned up,” maintenance managerMaurice Goodall said.

He said one of the mostnoticeable changes this year is thelocation of the main stage.

“This stage is moved from thenormal spot because of the stormlast year,” he said adding the stagewas temporarily repaired for lastyear’s fair following a windstorm. Anew, portable stage has beendonated by the Okanogan-OmakRotary Club. It will be located byJones Hall at the north end of thefood court.

The photography area isexpected to see some changes, too.

“We’re just going to do it totallydifferent” this year, PhotographySuperintendent Sheila Corson said.

The former blue pegboards arenow being swapped for new, suspended boards. Corson said themain reason for the change issimply because the older, accordion style pegboards arefalling apart.

The new boards will besuspended on chains and sit atopred, painted apple boxes.

“I think it’ll look really nice,”she said. “We’re going to beassembling them really easy; pull afew screws out and we’re good.”

Frames will no longer beaccepted with photo entries either.Corson said year after year, framesbreak, making shattered glass ahazard. Photos will be clothespinned on a piece of string againsta burlap background.

“It’ll be nice to have a new lookin there,” she said. “I think it willstill look pro, but it’ll look rustic.I’d sit there and be trying to fixframes but I couldn’t make it work. That was taking hours.”

Corson said this year will be anexperiment. She’s aware noteveryone supports the idea and, ifneed be, she may go back toaccepting frames in the future.

“Some people are like, ‘What,no frames?’ If it doesn’t work out,we can go back next year,” she said.

“It’s hard for judges to get pastframes. I want people to judge onthe photo not the frame.”

She said another noticeableimprovement will be the displaycases in the home economics area.

“The home economics area isdefinitely going through somemajor improvements,” she said. “Alot of the glass has been chipped orcompletely shattered. They’reswitching out those cases forshelving.”

Goodall said numerous other, smaller repairs are being madethroughout the fairgrounds.

This year there will beelectricity and water for campers

near the south end of the grounds.Goodall said grass is growing andthe area will no longer beconsidered “a dust bowl.”

“All in all, we’ve done a lot oflittle fixing on things,” he said.“We’re just plugging along; we justgot done raising the dirt in the goatbarn; same thing in the beef barn.

“It’s things that happen behindthe scene that makes things flowbetter.”

The county planned to replacethe south end restrooms, but thatdid not happen. The engineer’sestimate was $180,000, but thelone bid received was for$390,000.
