Tidecatcher: Featuring a lighthouse

The Tidecatcher house in Birch Bay is recognizable because of its lighthouse feature. (Tim Newcomb/Lynden Tribune)

Coast Guard style turns a history-filled Birch Bay site into a modern eyecatcherBy Tim [email protected]

BIRCH BAY — Patti White knew from the start: She wanted a lighthouse feature in her new home. And she got it. With Birch Bay frontage property in her family since 1929 and a family-run vacation cabin rental business on site, White and husband John Gargett figured it was time to add a little modern flair to the “Tidecatcher” site, all without losing a tie to the past. Okay, so they added quite a bit of flair, with a lighthouse stretching above the two-story home, sporting views of the bay. Designed by Lynden architect Mark Bratt and pulled off by Sumas contractor Chuck Handy, the lighthouse space works exquisitely. “I have always seen and liked lighthouse projects,” she said. “And I like

The lighthouse feature (top left) plays an even more dramatic role inside the home than outside. Situated in the master bedroom, a stand-alone bathtub sits directly under the elevated ceiling, which also draws in plenty of natural light to the space. Also in the bedroom (bottom left), views toward the bay draw even more light into the serene space. Downstairs (pictured above), a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and shelving unit help warm both the living and kitchen spaces, all while tying them together with a common feature. the lighthouse feature here. I thought (Bratt and Handy) did a great job.” The couple decided to tear down the largest of seven original Tidecatcher vaca-tion rentals on site right down to the foun-dation and build new. That is the start of what will eventually be upgrades to all the cabins. Working within about 1,500 square feet total on two floors, White wanted Bratt to create a Coast Guard-like look for her first cabin, now their home, setting a Coast Guard theme for all future renova-tions. The first stage of Tidecatcher’s reju-venation was completed last June. With no wiggle room on size, small was the goal from the start, forcing White and Gargett to whittle out the unnec-essary and focus on the essential. And what’s more essential than water and light? (more on water later) Tidecatcher’s main floor — situated off a healthy front deck that looks out to the bay and opens with French glass doors — uses a nearly all-glass front of the house to spill natural light into the main living space. The light continues into a small dining area with a kitchen, all punctuated

by the roundness of the lighthouse and the height of a fireplace. “The lighthouse is the most interest-ing and challenging aspect of the home, although making a home that is long, narrow and tall look good is a challenge as well,” Handy said. “All the corners of the lighthouse were established, slanted walls were made on the exterior, and then we evaluated where to start and stop the walls on the interior.” Bratt said he was pleased he could integrate the lighthouse into a tight spot at the front of the house while keeping it proportional to the scale of the house. “We were able to get a variance to allow us to make the lighthouse feature a bit higher than the house roof,” he said. As this is the second home White has built — her first, in San Deigo, was fea-tured on an HGTV show because of its de-sign — she knew what she wanted, from lighthouses to round windows that keep the Coast Guard theme. White brought in personal touches to help theme her design, from her grand-father’s phonograph to an old icebox as a storage unit and artwork that has per-sonal meaning. The corner fireplace, located near both the kitchen and the living area, links

boo floor — she doesn’t need to fret about dirt — unifies the kitchen, which also fea-tures cabinets stretching to the ceiling for a clean, modern look. Sandy-colored granite counters, including on a large is-land that helps with entertaining, play off the beach theme. “It is a very practical beach house that is comfortable for entertaining,” White said about the versatility of the space from the kitchen all the way to the deck. A downstairs bathroom behind the kitchen offers chances for storage (think: a pantry under the stairs) along the way to the garage. Between the garage and the house an extra little office space keeps the Tidecatcher guests away from the side door of the home. And there’s even some room in the garage for a sauna. Bratt said the tight footprint — re-quired by difficult permitting rules — forced the design to “go vertical to get the floor area needed.” Luckily, he said, no-body complains about bedrooms upstairs with the views. At the back of the home, upstairs, an oversized bonus room sits above the ga-rage, offering typical television viewing space, comfortable seating and even his-and-her desks. Windows along the hall

The kitchen of the Tidecatcher home (above) doesn't leave out any of the modern amenities expected today. Extra space above the garage makes for a perfect great room (upper left), plenty big to handle all kinds of entertainment. (Tim Newcomb/Lynden Tribune)

draw natural light in and a spare second bedroom offers guests — who aren’t stay-ing in the rentals — a place to stay, even with their own bathroom. But where things get really spectacu-lar is in the master suite. The light-colored bathroom, complete with high windows, looks inviting enough, but a slanted wall in the tiled shower reminds visitors of their proximity to the lighthouse feature, which comes full circle in the master bed-room. “We fell in love with the slanted fea-tures of the lighthouse and tried to inte-grate that look in the interior as well as we had on the exterior,” Handy said. “As a re-sult of this, we had an opportunity to have an internal slanted wall in the bathroom.” White simply loves the surprise and the character of it all. But because of the tightness of space, there was no room for a bathtub. And White loves water. And tubs. Cue the most dramatic view in the Tidecatcher: a “deca-dent” tub sitting squarely in the circular shape of the lighthouse, all in the master bedroom. “You can’t have everything in a small space,” White said. “Not everybody

would enjoy that fixture, but it is my per-sonal space and I put a lot of thought into this.” The elevation of the lighthouse’s win-dows provides bouncing light throughout a room already filled with natural light and views out onto the water, Birch Bay, to the outside. Handy opened the vaulted ceilings by using beams, drawing in more light and creating opportunities for custom-made shelving for décor and speakers. “When building homes, we try to look for a diamond-in-the-rough niche loca-tion that the customer can appreciate,” he said. “Many good ideas were thought of in the design and some good ones along the way.” White, Gargett, Handy and Bratt all praised each other. And they’ll likely have the opportunity to work together again, as the future — possibly as soon as this fall — consists of leveling all the former fish-ing cabins one by one and using the main “caretaker” house as the leaping-off point for the Coast Guard theme. “They are taking a risk that, in the end, all the expense and work will result in something worth more than the sum of its parts,” Bratt said. “They are courageous.” A view up the lighthouse reveals the architectural feature in detail. Rediscover the attraction of American hardwoods

Transform an aging room into a dazzling showcase

Looking for a simple, inexpensive way to turn an aging family room into a dazzling showcase? Inspired design professionals will tell you one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to transform a plain space into a room with sizzle is to adorn it with millwork crafted from American hard-woods. Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center, www.Hard-woodInfo.com, agrees. “From intricate crown mouldings and filigreed fireplace mantels to traditional wainscoting and baseboard trim, genera-tions of designers and homeowners have counted on hardwood mouldings and mill-work to add warmth, character, and beauty

to their favorite living spaces,” Jovanovich said. So let’s start answering your questions.

Where has all the millwork gone? Years ago, most American homes were built with at least a minimum level of interi-or ornamentation. Builders used hardwood details to make each residence unique, re-flecting the individuality and taste of their owners. Unfortunately, after World War II, the popularity of millwork began to wane. Builders sacrificed craftsmanship for speed in order to keep pace with an unprecedent-ed demand for new homes in the country’s booming suburbs. Today, most new homes in America continue to be built with time and cost-efficiency in mind, leaving homeowners with few options for endowing their resi-dences with a sense of individuality. But that doesn’t mean everyone should settle

for cookie-cutter designs.

What’s a homeowner to do? Susan Muschweck, a Pittsburgh-based interior designer, says painting walls and upgrading floors is a great way to dress up listless spaces. But for many clients, she suggests another cost-effective option. “I like to recommend hardwood moulding,” she said. “Trim brings a room to life. And by using hardwood, you really add permanent warmth, distinction and value to your home.” To make the best of your hardwood investment, consistency is critical, Muschweck said. “When adding millwork, use crown, baseboard and other millwork patterns that complement each other,” she explains. “Be sure to maintain the same style through-out your home, but capitalize on the design flexibility different spaces offer. In the din-ing room, for example, choose wainscoting or a chair rail to create a sense of charm or formality.”

What’s the best wood to use? Nothing stands up to wear and tear better than American hardwoods, yet ex-perience tells Pittsburgh architect Mary Cerrone that certain hardwood species are more suited to particular applications than others. “For millwork that is likely to get bumped or beat-up, such as window and door casings, baseboards, paneling and

chair rails, I suggest using a harder species, like white oak,” she said. “For mouldings and millwork in less accessible areas, espe-cially those that will be painted, homeown-ers can save money by using less expensive hardwoods, such as poplar.”

How can it be affordable? Custom moulding can be pricey, but there are simple and creative ways to get the custom look you want at a cost you can afford, maintains the American Hardwood Information Center. Good millwork links imagination with affordability. “Lumber supply centers and home im-provement stores can have up to 350 off-the-shelf moulding patterns available,” Jo-vanovich said. “Combining or ‘stacking’ two or more stock moulding ‘profiles’ creates the effect of a single, hand-carved piece of wood and provides the unique look of cus-tom millwork at a fraction of the cost.” Or achieve the look of a more expen-sive hardwood, like cherry, by using a cher-ry stain on a less expensive hardwood. This technique works especially well in decora-tive applications above eye level, such as crown moulding and recessed ceiling pat-terns. Use your imagination and be sure to visit the American Hardwood Information Center at www.HardwoodInfo.com to see a multitude of ways that mouldings and millwork crafted from authentic American hardwoods can dress up your home.

Popular colors trend toward the outdoorsGreens and blues headline 2013 interior paint palette

If you’re into what’s “in” when it comes to interior paint colors, just look outside in 2013. The greens and blues that characterize the world outdoors are the same hues that will be popular in beautifying living spaces this year, according to the Paint Quality In-stitute. “It’s fitting that green is expected to be one of the top paint colors used to refresh and renew the interiors of homes and build-ings,” said Debbie Zimmer, paint and color expert with the institute. “Green has always been symbolic of new life. Only now, it will be giving new life to tired interiors.” That’s not to say, however, that “pure” green on the color wheel will be everyone’s (or designers’) choice. With the growing complexity and sophistication of the palette offered by most paint companies, “green” today refers to an extremely wide spectrum

of hues. To visualize the options, think of the colors of plants that appear in a garden or grove of trees: apple, asparagus, celery, fern, honeydew, lime, mint, olive and wil-low may come to mind. Wherever you buy your paint, you’ll likely find some tints and shades of green named after such familiar flora. “Then there are the greens that gravi-tate toward blue, which just happens to be projected as the other popular paint color this year,” said Zimmer. “Bluish-greens like teal, turquoise, aquamarine and cyan are expected to be hot designer choices. By se-lecting one of these hybrid colors, you can in a sense co-opt both of the trendy color choices.” Actually, we may see a lot of true blues this year. And many will be drawn right from Mother Nature: lighter tints such as sky blue and robin’s egg to darker shades like slate, navy and midnight blue ... and everything in between. Because various greens and blues work

Springtime tips for knowing when to replace home partsRoofs, doors, windows, siding, trim — they don’t last forever

Springtime weather means it’s time to evaluate your home’s exterior. Owning a home means giving constant attention to the building products that go into pro-tecting the structure of your house. While we’d like to believe items like our roof, sid-ing and windows will last forever, that’s not the case. Mark Clement, co-host of the national home improvement radio show MyFixitUpLife, offers a variety of tips for knowing when it’s time to replace products on your home. “The first thing any homeowner needs to understand is that every element of your home’s exterior, from the top of the roof down to the front entry door, will eventu-ally need to be replaced,” said Clement, a professional contractor in Pennsylvania. “The key is to know when the time is right to invest in new products for your home. This means an ongoing evaluation of your home’s current products, researching new product options and contacting profes-sionals for support.” Replacing older products with newer, more energy-efficient and longer-lasting products is always a sound investment for homeowners. “Another important aspect to con-sider when it does become time to replace key products on the home’s exterior is to

look at upgrading and taking advantage of newer, more aesthetically pleasing prod-ucts that are on the market. Our product choices not only make our home more liv-able right now, but also more add value to the home and make it more ‘sellable’ when it comes time for us to put the house on the market,” Clement said.

Tips for Evaluating Your Roof Using either a ladder or binoculars from across the street, look for problem areas, such as missing or broken shingles, along with roofing tiles that may be “flap-ping in the wind.” These are all indications that a new roof may be in your future. Check the sides of your roof. The southern exposure weathers significantly faster than the other sides of the roof, so make sure to carefully examine this area. Also, shallower pitches weather faster than steeper pitches. So again, if your roof has a shallow pitch (like a shed dormer), make sure you can clearly see it to get a true in-dication of the condition of your roof. If you have a real cedar roof, consid-er your geographic location. Many West Coast homeowners are proactively replac-ing these wooden roofs with fire- and im-pact-resistant polymer shake roofs. Along with helping to protect the home from potential wildfires, these roofs often come with a homeowner insurance discount.

Tips for Assessing Your Windows Evaluate the functionality of your current windows. If you have condensa-

tion between glass panes, the windows are hard to open or close, your energy bills are soaring or there are drafts coming in around the window units, then it’s time to seriously consider replacement. Determine how many panes of glass are in your windows. Single-paned win-dows are the least energy-efficient. You can replace them with double- or triple-paned Energy Star-compliant windows to enhance energy efficiency and make your home more comfortable during all sea-sons. Look at the frames of your windows. If they’re made of a product that needs constant maintenance like wood, you may be spending a good deal of time scrap-ing paint and repainting every few years. An investment in vinyl-framed windows would be smart since these low-main-tenance frames eliminate maintenance hassles.

Tips for Knowing When to Replace a Front Door If you can see light around your main entry door from the inside, the door is hard to close or lock, or the door itself is warped, it’s time to consider a new door. Even if you can’t see light, air may be

Replace: Consider replacing warped front doorsContinued from C14 moving through gaps in the weather strip-

ping at a surprising rate. On a very cold or hot day, hold the back of your hand an inch or so away from the bottom and perimeter of your door. If you can feel air moving or a significant cold spot, that’s a signal your existing door could benefit from better sealing. Along with your energy bills, think about the weather conditions your home’s doors put up with. If it runs to either ex-treme hot or cold, consider replacing your entry door with a high-performance fi-berglass door (which can have four times more insulation than wood doors). Look for a door with enhanced weather strip-ping, corner seal pad, door bottom sweep and profiled sill that all work together to provide strength and stability in your en-try door.

Tips for Evaluating Trim Features of the Home Take a top-down look at your home. Most houses have louvers placed high above the attic or garage space to allow ventilation in those areas. Some houses have wooden louvers that can rot with time. Replacing louvers with insect-resis-tant and rot-resistant synthetic louvers can improve the home’s appearance and

functionality. Wrap it up. Clement notes that you can quite easily transform unsightly porch posts into showpiece parts of a home by using column wrap kits. The decorative PVC or urethane pieces can generally be installed in less than 30 minutes around existing structural posts and columns. And finish any entry door or win-

dow replacement by making sure of styl-ish trim. Lightweight and easy to install, weather-resistant synthetic mouldings, shutters and entryway surrounds made of durable urethane or PVC are a definite do-it-yourself project for any homeowner. so well together, virtually any combination from these extended color families can be used to create a visually pleasant interior. To that end, Zimmer suggests that do-it-yourselfers, and even professional painters and designers, mix it up when working with these hues. Some of the ways to do that include using different blues or greens on the walls and trim, painting an accent wall in a slightly different color from the others, and even incorporating patterns into the paint color scheme used on the walls. Another idea: paint one or more items of furniture in a contrasting or complementary green or blue. “Just as they do in a garden or land-scape with the sky up above, the various greens and blues will tend to harmonize into a cohesive picture that will be as se-rene and tranquil as the beautiful scenes we see outdoors,” Zimmer said. Distressing the stress out of building

The beams you see on the outside entry are just a tease of what you can expect inside. (Brent Lindquist/Lynden Tribune)See Kooy on C18

New Lynden home has personal touches along the wayBy Tim [email protected]

LYNDEN — Kevin Kooy took pieces of his brand-new Lynden house and dragged them around a parking lot, bashing them with a forklift. Kooy likes to call it “distressing.” And now the fin-ished product — stained fir beams — serves as a focal point of the wide-open living space. Kevin’s wife, Jessica, admits she was a little scared to see how the beams would turn out — especially when she heard a forklift was involved — but was pleased in the end that they accentu-ate the rustic look of the home. Even a dainty chandelier-inspired entry light that Jessica just loves can’t diminish the rustic touch the beams provide. Contractor Wes Wiersma, owner of Wiersma Construction Inc., said getting those beams in place was a lot of fun too.

“Whenever you do something big and beefy like that inside a house, it is a lot more involved than just setting trusses on a wall and going,” he said. “If you’re short (on your measurements) or drop it (while lifting with a forklift), anything like that and you’re done. It was a fun day.” In fact, the entire job was a lot of fun, the Kooys said. “I would do it again,” Kevin said about building their home. “I don’t know if we will, but we enjoyed it.” The Kooys bought their lot in north Lynden five years ago. But it took time to get ready to build and also to sell their condominium. Two kids later, the Kooys partnered with Wiersma to create this 2,365-square-foot, two-story home, complete with a child-friendly layout, making it “convenient,” Jessica said. It was finished right after Thanksgiving 2012. The home's design was done by JWR Design of Lynden. Kevin used his expertise from the family business — Ralph’s Floors in Lyn-den — to help the couple make design decisions. “I do it for other people all the time, so it was fun to be able to do one for ourselves,” he said, even if Jessica was the mastermind behind the home’s look. The beams aren’t the only feature

that hit you upon walking into the open floor plan. You also get plenty of stone fireplace from floor to vaulted ceiling, in fact. Kevin said the original plan was to keep the fireplace short, but at the last minute they decided to just go for it (Kevin did the work himself) and they’re glad they did. As an added bonus, using a trick they’d seen before, they had cabi-nets built under the hearth to store the electronics and funneled the wiring to a fireplace-mounted television behind the stone. Flowing from the great room, the kitchen sits to the side, complete with a gigantic granite-covered island that has served as a family must-stop. Not only does most of the prep work for cooking happen on the island, but so does the eating with the young family — the two boys are now 2 years and 11 months old — and even catching up on the mail. “It is convenient and brings us all together in one space,” Jessica said. The dark wood floors — Kevin laid them himself, along with wiring the main rooms for sound and installing a central vacuum system and outdoor sprinklers — couple with dark knotty alder cabinets to further the rustic look. Without fanfare the kitchen blends with the living space, complementing the décor and merging together. Plenty of

cabinetry and a corner walk-in pantry — Wiersma said he was always trying to find the Kooys extra bits of storage wher-ever he could — help keep things in their place. A small dining area links the kitch-en to the back patio and outdoor space. It also has a vaulted covering, held up by even larger beams than in the great room. The main floor packs a punch, with a powder room, bedroom (used as a den) and laundry room all offered before you reach the stairs and master suite, set off to the far side from the kitchen. From a layout perspective, Jessica said moving the stairs to the side, get-ting them out of your initial view, served

both a design and practical purpose. Now they are located conveniently (the kids’ rooms are upstairs) next to the master suite. The bedroom remains simple, but the bathroom includes a soaker tub and stone-tiled walk-in shower, one of the Kooys’ splurges in the house. Kevin laid the tile himself, even tucking nooks into the shower around the entrance, away from view. “I wanted to do as many things as I could,” Kevin said. “But doing it yourself takes time.” Upstairs contains two small bed-rooms for the kids — in hindsight they might have gone a little larger there if the budget had allowed — a bonus room over the garage, a small unfinished stor-

Wiersma said he was pleased with how the house turned out and enjoyed the opportunity to work with the Kooys along the way. “I was giving them point-ers, adding a little bit of storage here or offering to frame it different there to add extra room,” he said. “It was exciting to see it turn out the way it did.”

Sometimes those building their home for the first time get overwhelmed with the process. Not the Kooys. “I en-joyed it, but it was hard with a newborn and 16-month-old,” Jessica said. “There were a lot of late nights designing. It is all how I envisioned it and it is nice to be done and settled.” From entry lights to distressed beams, the Kooys placed a personal touch on their home. And even used a forklift to do it.
