Hymn: TiS 270

1. On Jordan’s bank the Baptist’s cry announces that the Lord is nigh; come then and hearken, for he brings glad tidings from the King of kings.

2. Then cleansed be every heart from sin; make straight the way for God within; prepare we in our hearts a home where such a mighty guest may come.

3. For you are our salvation, Lord, our refuge and our great reward; without your grace we waste away like flowers that wither and decay.

4. To heal the sick stretch out your hand, and bid the fallen sinner stand; shine forth, and let your light restore earth’s own true loveliness once more.

5. To him who left the throne of heaven to free us all, let praise be given; and praise be to the Father done, and Holy Spirit, Three in One.

Charles Coffin 1676–1749 tr. John Chandler 1806–76 alt.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: A voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ Matthew 3.17

Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Commandments: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Eternal God, at the baptism of Jesus in the river Jordan you proclaimed him your beloved Son, and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: grant that all who are baptised into his name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: Isaiah 42.1-9 1 Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. 5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the Lord , I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7 to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 29 1 Ascribe to the Lord, you powers of heaven:

ascribe to the Lord glory and might. 2 Ascribe to the Lord the honour due to his name:

O worship the Lord in the beauty of his holiness. 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters:

the God of glory thunders, the Lord upon the great waters. 4 The voice of the Lord is mighty in operation:

the voice of the Lord is a glorious voice. 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar-trees:

the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes them skip like a calf:

Lebanon and Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the Lord divides the lightning-flash:

the voice of the Lord whirls the sands of the desert,

the Lord whirls the desert of Kadesh. 8 The voice of the Lord rends the terebinth trees, and strips bare the forests:

in his temple all cry ‘Glory.’ 9 The Lord sits enthroned above the water-flood:

the Lord sits enthroned as a king for ever. 10 The Lord will give strength to his people:

the Lord will give to his people the blessing of peace.

Second Reading: Acts 10.34-43 34 Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35 but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36 You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37 That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39 We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40 but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41 not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD Gradual Hymn: TiS 250 1. Christ, when for us you were baptized, God’s Spirit on you came, as peaceful as a dove, and yet as urgent as a flame.

2. God called you his belovèd Son, called you his servant true: sent you his kingdom to proclaim, his holy will to do.

3. Straightway and steadfast until death you then obeyed his call, freely as Son of Man to serve and give your life for all.

4. Baptize us with your Spirit, Lord, your cross on us be signed, that likewise in God’s service we may perfect freedom find.

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Matthew chapter 3 beginning at the 13th verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ 15 But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

The Nicene Creed

Let us together affirm the faith of the Church. We believe in one God, the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 194

1. O love how deep, how broad, how high! it fills the heart with ecstasy that God, the Son of God, should take our mortal form for mortals’ sake.

2. He sent no angel to our race of higher or of lower place but wore the robe of human frame himself, and to this lost world came.

3. For us he was baptized, and bore his holy fast, and hungered sore; for us temptations sharp he knew; for us the tempter overthrew.

4. For us he prayed, for us he taught, for us his daily works he wrought, by words and signs and actions, thus still seeking not himself but us.

5. For us to wicked hands betrayed, scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed, he bore the shameful cross and death; for us at length gave up his breath.

6. For us he rose from death again, for us he went on high to reign, for us he sent his Spirit here to guide, to strengthen and to cheer.

7. To him whose boundless love has won salvation for us through his Son, to God the Father, glory be both now and through eternity.

Attrib. Thomas à Kempis 1379–1471 tr. Benjamin Webb 1819–85 alt.

Offertory Prayer: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have these gifts to share. Accept and use our offerings for your glory and for the service of your kingdom. BLESSED BE GOD FOR EVER.

Final Hymn: TiS 282

1. The voice of God goes out to all the world; his glory speaks across the universe. The great King’s herald cries from star to star: ‘With power, with justice, he will walk his way.’

2. The Lord has said, ‘Receive my messenger, my promise to the world, my pledge made flesh, a lamp to every nation, light from light’: with power, with justice, he will walk his way.

3. The broken reed he will not trample down, nor set his heel upon the dying flame. He binds the wounds, and health is in his hand: with power, with justice, he will walk his way.

4. Anointed with the Spirit and with power, he comes to crown with comfort all the weak, to show the face of justice to the poor: with power, with justice, he will walk his way.

5. His touch will bless the eyes that darkness held, the lame shall run, the halting tongue shall sing, and prisoners laugh in light and liberty: with power, with justice, he will walk his way.
