Hymn: TiS 638

1. O Christ, the healer, we have come to pray for health, to plead for friends. How can we fail to be restored when reached by love that never ends?

2. From every ailment flesh endures our bodies clamour to be freed; yet in our hearts we would confess that wholeness is our deepest need.

3. How strong, O Lord, are our desires, how weak our knowledge of ourselves! Release in us those healing truths unconscious pride resists or shelves.

4. In conflicts that destroy our health we diagnose the world’s disease; our common life declares our ills: is there no cure, O Christ, for these?

5. Grant that we all, made one in faith, in your community may find the wholeness that, enriching us, shall reach the whole of humankind.

Frederick Pratt Green 1903–2000

Words and music by permission Stainer & Bell, London

Invocation: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God's kingdom, now and for ever.

Greeting: The Lord be with you. AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: ‘I am the resurrection and the life,’ says the Lord; ‘whoever lives and believes in me shall never die.’ John 11.25–26 Prayer of Preparation: As we gather as God's people let us pray together: God of love and peace, you know what we think and feel. Touch our hearts that our thoughts and actions may be good so that we may love you and honour you, through Jesus Christ our Lord, AMEN. The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as yourself.’ Kyrie eleison (Dudman Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's forgiveness. God of mercy and grace, we have sometimes thought wrong things, and done wrong things and we have not always loved each other as we should. We are sorry. Forgive us and help us to love and obey you ,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Absolution {Celebrant}

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day Life-giving God, your Son came into the world to free us all from sin and death: breathe upon us with the power of your Spirit, that we may be raised to new life in Christ, and serve you in holiness and righteousness all our days; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD Readings from CEV

First Reading: Ezekiel 37:1-14

37 Some time later, I felt the LORD’s power take control of me, and his Spirit carried me to a valley full of bones. 2 The LORD showed me all around, and everywhere I looked I saw bones that were dried out. 3 He said, “Ezekiel, son of man, can these bones come back to life?” I replied, “LORD God, only you can answer that.” 4 He then told me to say: Dry bones, listen to what the LORD is saying to you, 5 “I, the LORD God, will put breath in you, and once again you will live. 6 I will wrap you with muscles and skin and breathe life into you. Then you will know that I am the LORD.” 7 I did what the LORD said, but before I finished speaking, I heard a rattling noise. The bones were coming together! 8 I saw muscles and skin cover the bones, but they had no life in them. 9 The LORD said: Ezekiel, now say to the wind,[a] “The LORD God commands you to blow from every direction and to breathe life into these dead bodies, so they can live again.” 10 As soon as I said this, the wind blew among the bodies, and they came back to life! They all stood up, and there were enough to make a large army. 11 The LORD said: Ezekiel, the people of Israel are like dead bones. They complain that they are dried up and that they have no hope for the future. 12 So tell them, “I, the LORD God, promise to open your graves and set you free. I will bring you back to Israel, 13 and when that happens, you will realize that I am the LORD. 14 My Spirit will give you breath, and you will live again. I will bring you home, and you will know that I have kept my promise. I, the LORD, have spoken.” Response: Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm 130 1 Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord:

Lord, hear my voice;

2 O let your ears consider well: the voice of my supplication.

3 If you, Lord, should note what we do wrong: who then, O Lord, could stand?

4 But there is forgiveness with you: so that you shall be feared.

5 I wait for the Lord, my soul waits for him: and in his word is my hope.

6 My soul looks for the Lord: more than watchmen for the morning, more, I say, than watchmen for the morning.

7 O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy: and with him is ample redemption.

8 He will redeem Israel: from the multitude of their sins.

WE STAND FOR THE READING OF THE HOLY GOSPEL AS A SIGN OF RESPECT AS WE GREET

OUR LORD WHO IS PRESENT IN HIS HOLY WORD. The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Jonh chapter 11 beginning at the 1st verse. GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST. 1 Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. 2 Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. 3 So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, ‘Lord, he whom you love is ill.’4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, ‘This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God’s glory, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’ 5 Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, 6 after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. 14 Then Jesus told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead. 15 For your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.’ 16 Thomas, who was called the Twin, said to his fellow-disciples, ‘Let us also go, that we may die with him.’17 When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. 18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, some two miles away, 19 and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them about their brother. 20 When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary stayed at home. 21 Martha said to Jesus, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask of him.’ 23 Jesus said to her, ‘Your brother will rise again.’24 Martha said to him, ‘I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.’ 25 Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?’ 27 She said to him, ‘Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world.’ 38 Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it.39 Jesus said, ‘Take away the stone.’ Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, ‘Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days.’ 40 Jesus said to her, ‘Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?’ 41 So they took away the

stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, ‘Father, I thank you for having heard me. 42 I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.’ 43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ 44 The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, ‘Unbind him, and let him go.’ Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Final Hymn: TiS 122

1. What shall I do my God to love, my loving God to praise? the length, and breadth, and height to prove, and depth of sovereign grace?

2. Your sovereign grace to all extends, immense and unconfined; from age to age it never ends, to reach all humankind.

3. Throughout the world its breadth is known, wide as infinity: so wide it never passed by one, or it had passed by me.

4. My trespass was grown up to heav’n; but far above the skies, in Christ abundantly forgiv’n, I see your mercies rise.

5. The depth of all-redeeming love what angel tongue can tell? O may I to the utmost prove the gift unspeakable.

6. Come quickly, gracious Lord, and take possession of your own; my longing heart be pleased to make your everlasting throne.

Charles Wesley 1707–88 alt.

A call to alms 18-20 April Seeking asylum is a human right protected under international and Australian law; a legal act of desperation by those being persecuted. But we as a nation are failing the world’s most vulnerable people when they come to us for help. The offshore processing and long term detention of asylum seekers in prison camps is a shameful reflection on our compassion and humanity. We want to change this, and we believe prayer is powerful.

This 18-20 April, we respectfully invite your community of worship to

participate in a weekend of contemplation and prayer for refugees seeking asylum in Australia.
