Hymn: TiS 246

1. Christ is the world’s light, he and none other;

born in our darkness, he became our brother.

If we have seen him, we have seen the Father:

Glory to God on high.

2. Christ is the world’s peace, he and none other;

no one can serve him and despise his brother.

Who else unites us, one in God the Father?

Glory to God on high.

3. Christ is the world’s life, he and none other;

sold once for silver, murdered here, our brother —

he, who redeems us, reigns with God the Father:

Glory to God on high.

4. Give God the glory, God and none other;

give God the glory, Spirit, Son and Father;

give God the glory, God in man my brother:

Glory to God on high.

Frederick Pratt Green

Words by permission Stainer & Bell, London

Arrangement from the English Hymnal by permission Oxford University Press

Greeting: The Lord be with you.

AND ALSO WITH YOU. (see Ruth 2:4)

Sentence: Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another,

so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and

effective. James 5.16

Page 4: HTK Pew Sheet, 10am, September 29, 2013

Prayer of Preparation:

As we gather as God's people let us pray together:

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open,

all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden:

cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,

that we may perfectly love you,

and worthily magnify your holy name,

through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Summary of the Commandments:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord

your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your

mind, and with all your strength.’ Jesus said: ‘This is the great and first

commandment. And a second is like it: you shall love your neighbour as

yourself.’

Kyrie eleison (How Setting)

The Confession

Let us confess our sins in penitence and faith, confident in God's

forgiveness.

Merciful God, our maker and our judge,

we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,

and in what we have failed to do:

we have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves;

we repent, and are sorry for all our sins.

Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you

in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Absolution (Celebrant)

Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to

him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins,

strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of the Day

O God, from whom light rises in darkness for those who seek you: grant

us, in all our doubts and uncertainties, the grace to ask what you would

have us do, that in your light we may see light, and in your narrow path

may not stumble; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns

with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD

Readings from 'New Revised Standard Version' (NRSV)

First Reading: 1 Timothy 4.12 - 5.8

4 12

Let no one despise your youth, but set the believers an example in

speech and conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13

Until I arrive, give attention

to the public reading of scripture, to exhorting, to teaching. 14

Do not neglect

the gift that is in you, which was given to you through prophecy with the

laying on of hands by the council of elders. 15

Put these things into practice,

devote yourself to them, so that all may see your progress. 16

Pay close

attention to yourself and to your teaching; continue in these things, for in

doing this you will save both yourself and your hearers. 5 1 Do not speak

harshly to an older man, but speak to him as to a father, to younger men as

brothers, 2 to older women as mothers, to younger women as sisters—with

absolute purity. 3 Honour widows who are really widows.

4 If a widow has

children or grandchildren, they should first learn their religious duty to their

own family and make some repayment to their parents; for this is pleasing in

God’s sight. 5 The real widow, left alone, has set her hope on God and

continues in supplications and prayers night and day; 6 but the widow who

lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. 7 Give these commands as

well, so that they may be above reproach. 8 And whoever does not provide

for relatives, and especially for family members, has denied the faith and is

worse than an unbeliever.

Response:Hear the word of the Lord,

THANKS BE TO GOD

Psalm: 91.1-6, 14-16

1 Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High:

who abide under the shadow of the Almighty, 2 They will say to the Lord

‘You are my refuge and my stronghold:

my God in whom I trust.’ 3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the hunter:

and from the destroying curse. 4 He will cover you with his wings,

and you will be safe under his feathers:

his faithfulness will be your shield and defence. 5 You shall not be afraid of any terror by night:

or of the arrow that flies by day, 6 Of the pestilence that walks about in darkness:

or the plague that destroys at noonday. 14

‘You have set your love upon me,’ says the Lord,

‘and therefore I will deliver you:

I will lift you out of danger,

because you have known my name. 15

‘When you call upon me I will answer you:

I will be with you in trouble,

I will rescue you and bring you to honour. 16

‘With long life I will satisfy you:

and fill you with my salvation.’

We stand for the reading of the Holy Gospel as a sign of respect as we greet

our Lord who is present in His Holy Word.

The Lord be with you

AND ALSO WITH YOU

The gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Saint Luke chapter 16

beginning at the 19th

verse.

GLORY TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

19

‘There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who

feasted sumptuously every day. 20

And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus,

covered with sores, 21

who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the

rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22

The poor man

died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham. The rich man also

died and was buried. 23

In Hades, where he was being tormented, he looked up

and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side. 24

He called out, “Father

Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water

and cool my tongue; for I am in agony in these flames.” 25

But Abraham said,

“Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things, and

Lazarus in like manner evil things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in

agony. 26

Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so

that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can

cross from there to us.” 27

He said, “Then, father, I beg you to send him to my

father’s house— 28

for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they

will not also come into this place of torment.” 29

Abraham replied, “They have

Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.” 30

He said, “No, father

Abraham; but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.” 31

He

said to him, “If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be

convinced even if someone rises from the dead.” ’

Gospel Response: This is the gospel of the Lord,

PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

THE GREETING OF PEACE (all stand)

{Celebrant} We are the body of Christ. His Spirit is with us.

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Offertory Hymn: TiS 595

1. O Jesus, I have promised

to serve you to the end;

Lord, be for ever near me,

my master and my friend:

I shall not fear the battle

if you are by my side,

nor wander from the pathway

if you will be my guide.

2. Still let me feel you near me:

the world is ever near;

I see the sights that dazzle,

and tempting sounds I hear;

my foes are ever near me,

around me and within;

but, Jesus, draw me nearer,

and shield my soul from sin.

3. O let me hear you speaking

in accents clear and still,

above the storms of passion,

the murmurs of self-will;

Lord, speak to reassure me,

to chasten or control;

O speak, and make me listen,

true guardian of my soul.

4. Lord, let me see your footmarks

and in them plant my own;

that I may follow boldly

and in your strength alone;

O guide me, call me, draw me,

uphold me to the end;

and then in heaven receive me,

my Saviour and my friend.

Final Hymn: TiS 571

1. Forth in your name, O Lord, I go,

my daily labour to pursue,

you, Lord, alone resolved to know,

in all I think, or speak, or do.

2. Each task your wisdom has

assigned

still let me cheerfully fulfil,

in all my works your presence find,

and prove your good and perfect

will.

3. You may I set at my right hand,

whose eyes my inmost substance

view,

and labour on at your command,

and offer all my works to you.

4. Give me to bear your easy yoke,

and every moment watch and pray,

and still to things eternal look,

and hasten to your glorious day;

5. for you delightfully employ

all that your bounteous grace has

given,

and run my course with even joy,

and closely walk with you to heaven.
