R F S The Forster Secular Franciscans will be hos ng a day long retreat with Brother Louis Schmid ofm on Saturday 9th August at Forster. The retreat is en tled “How Franciscans are called to advance the Kingdom of Christ”.

All parishioners and community members are invited to share in this retreat day.

The day will start with Mass at 9am, followed by morning tea at 9:30am, with the retreat beginning at 10am. Please BYO lunch, or a plate to share. NB: Mass on this Saturday morning will be at Forster.

F P ’ D On Thursday I a ended the annual Priests/Principals Gathering which brings together, not surprisingly, the priests of our Diocese together with the principals of our Schools for a day of reflec on.

This year’s Gathering looked at the rela onships between Parishes and Schools in the light and a ermath of the Special Commission of Inquiry that has recently reported, and the ongoing Royal Commission. It was, as you might expect, a confron ng day.

One of the presenta ons on the day was given by Fr Ian McGinnity, from the Diocese of Parrama a and the Chairman of the Na onal Council of Priests in Australia, and was en tled “Living with Ambiguity”.

Drawing upon the Gospel that was heard a fortnight ago—the parable of the weeds among the wheat—the part of the presenta on that I found both confron ng and comfor ng, par cularly in the light of issue of abuse in the Diocese of Maitland‐Newcastle, was the twin call to remember firstly that only God is holy, and, secondly, humanity is sinful.

In that light, members of the Church are confronted with the presence of both good and evil in the Church, the lack of black or white and the presence only of grey in most aspects of life, and the need to live with the innate tension that comes from the presence of ambiguity in ourselves, in life, and in the Church.

As I said, a very sobering thought and yet, strangely enough, comfor ng at the same me.

The Church, from top to bo om, will need to con nue to do all with its means to ensure that children and other vulnerable people are protected from abuse and harm. On the flip side, the Church needs to recognise that there will always be shades of evil present in society, and the Church cannot reasonably expect to avoid that presence just because the Church is the Church.

The call to live with ambiguity is not an easy one, and there will ups and downs along the journey. Together however, and reliant on God’s grace, we will navigate through the shades of grey that are found everywhere and in everyone.

Un l next week…. Fr Andrew
