Season Preview

The Bears, who placed seventh at the NEWMAC last

season will be led by a great senior class featuring

several athletes that will be counted for outstand-

ing seasons.

Senior captains Darlene Sao, one of the most ver-

satile swimmers the Bears have had in years, along

with diver Sarah Cantrell will lead the senior class

while Kelsey Gray, who is vastly improved from

last season, will be a solid breaststroke performer

along with Caitlin Geever (back/free) and Caro-

lyn Slife (backstroke), who returns from an injury

which caused her to miss all of last season and is

the leadoff leg of the school-record holding 200

medley relay team.

Sao placed third in the 100 freestyle (52.88) and

fi fth in the 200 IM (2:10.38) at the NEWMAC Cham-

pionships last season. She was also part of four

relays with two sixth place fi nishes and a pair of

seventh place fi nishes last season. In 2013, she

placed fi fth in the 200 IM at the NEWMAC Champi-

onships with a time of 2:10.33.

Cantrell made her fi rst appearance at the NCAA

Division III Championship as a sophomore in 2013

and placed 17th on the 1-meter board and 22nd

on the 3-meter board. She earned a spot at the

NCAA Championships by placing sixth at the NCAA

Division III Diving regional that season. Last year

at the NEWMAC Championships, she placed fi fth

on the 3-meter (451.35) and sixth on the 1-meter

2014-15 Men’s Season Preview

Coast Guard returns 50 freestyle national

champion senior co-captain Christian Brindamour,

who also earned All-America honors in the 100

freestyle last season will once again lead the Bears

in the 2014-15 season.

Brindamour swam a school-record time of 20.06

seconds in the 50 meter freestyle preliminaries to

earn a spot in the fi nals, just 0.02 seconds behind

the top time in the preliminaries. In the fi nals he

tied his time from earlier in the day to edge Ross

Spock (Emory) for the national championship – the

fi fth in Coast Guard swimming history and the fi rst

since Darby Schlaht won the 200 breaststroke in

2000.

He would later a school-record time of 44.81

seconds during the 100 meter freestyle

preliminaries. Seeded 19th in the fi eld entering

the championships, his time was good enough for

fi fth place and a spot in the fi nals. In the fi nals he

posted an even better time of 44.65 seconds to

re-break the school record and place fi fth to gain

All-America honors.

Ryan Buys, who lost just once last season during

dual meets in the 100 butterfl y, along with Tyler

Kotchman, the Bears most improved swimmer last

season, and co-captain Tim Early (IM/fl y) will lead

the senior class.

Diver Andy Anderson along with classmates

Timothy Dion and Ben Morseth will lead the junior

class. Anderson placed 13th at the NCAA Division

III Diving Regional as a sophomore while setting a

pair of school records both on the 3-meter board.

He set the six dive record (315.50) last season

and the 11 dive record (504.50) in 2013. Last year,

he placed third on the 1-meter board (469.25)

and fourth on the 3-meter board (435.85) at the

NEWMAC Championships. He has improved the

degree of diffi culty on some of his dives for this

season and looks to earn a berth in the Diving

regional once again this season.

Sophomore Elliott VanDeren, who placed fourth

in the 400 IM (4:09.86) and was part of the 400

free relay team which placed fourth and the 800

free relay team which placed fi fth at the NEWMAC

Championships last season leads a talented

sophomore class which includes Aaron Overheim

(fl y/free), Londen Thomas (fl y/free) and Carl Fuhs

(breast/free) that will be counted on heavily this

season.

The Bears were 7-3 in duals meets last season and

placed third at the NEWMAC Championships for

the second straight season.

REAR ADMIRAL SANDRA L. STOSZACADEMY SUPERINTENDENTFOURTH YEAR

Rear Admiral Sandra L. Stosz assumed the duties of the 40th Superintendent of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New

London, Connecticut, June 3, 2011. She reported to the Academy after serving as the Director of Reserve and Leadership at

Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C. There she was responsible for developing policies to recruit, train and support

approximately 8,100 Coast Guard Reservists.

Rear Admiral Stosz is a surface operations offi cer with 12 years at sea, including command of two cutters – an icebreaking

tug on the Great Lakes and a medium endurance cutter that patrolled North Atlantic and Caribbean waters. She and her

crews executed many of the Coast Guard’s 11 missions such as drug and alien migrant interdiction, fi sheries enforcement,

search and rescue, polar and domestic icebreaking and ports and waterways security.

Between sea duty tours Rear Admiral Stosz specialized in personnel and resource management and program review. She

served tours of duty as Chief of Offi cer Assignments and as Program Reviewer and Acquisition Funds Coordinator for Coast

Guard major systems acquisitions, including the 225-foot buoy tenders and 87-foot coastal patrol boats. She broadened her

experience as the Secretary of Transportation’s military assistant and years later as the Commandant’s executive assistant.

She has served as Commanding Offi cer of the Coast Guard’s recruit training center in Cape May, New Jersey and as Director of

Coast Guard Enterprise Strategic Management and Doctrine where she was responsible for aligning enterprise level strategic

and management functions with the Commandant’s strategic intent.

Rear Admiral Stosz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1982 with a bachelor of science degree in Government.

She was awarded a Master of Business Administration degree from Northwestern University’s J. L. Kellogg Graduate School

of Management in 1994. In 2000 she completed an executive fellowship in national security through the MIT Seminar XXI

program, and she earned a Master of National Security Strategy from the National War College in 2004. In 2009 she attended

the Navy’s Executive Business Course at University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler business school.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

TIM FITZPATRICKDIRECTOR OF ATHLETICSFOURTH YEAR

Tim Fitzpatrick just completed his third academic year as Director of Athletics at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and on his watch the USCGA’s athletic program has seen growth in several key areas. In addition to securing a comprehensive, fi ve-year shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America for the academy’s 23 NCAA sports, has overseen a rebranding initiative that has resulted in new logos and marks and created an athletic booster organization (the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bear Club). Under Fitzpatrick’s guidance, the department produced its fi rst-ever women’s professional development seminar (the Women’s LeadHERship Symposium) for female USCGA athletic staff members as well as attendees from colleges and universities throughout New England, and has launched an external program for sale of corporate sponsorships and partnerships.

Fitzpatrick was the Director of Athletics at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for two years prior to his arrival at USCGA, after spending the previous four years as the Deputy Athletic Director at Indiana University. At Texas A&M – Corpus Christi, Fitzpatrick secured major gifts for construction of a new outdoor tennis center, as well as renovation of the university’s baseball and softball stadiums. He additionally served on the NCAA’s Division I Women’s Basketball Issues Committee while in south Texas, and executed a strategic plan which increased the department’s corporate sponsorship revenue by nearly 40%.

While at Indiana, he was responsible for internal administration of the department, oversaw capital construction and facilities management, and had oversight of the football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball programs. Additionally, Fitzpatrick managed IU’s external units, including marketing, ticket operations, licensing, merchandising, website, and publications.

Additionally, he negotiated a 6-year, $21,000,000 shoe and apparel agreement with adidas America and administered the Hoosiers’ multi-media partnerships with Learfi eld Sports and the Big Ten Network. During his tenure, Indiana realized a ticket sales revenue increase of 15-percent over annual budgeted projections.

Fitzpatrick came to IU after spending the previous fi ve years as COO and associate athletics director for external operations at the U.S. Military Academy. Fitzpatrick directed a fundraising eff ort that saw Army’s “A Club” donor base grow from 750 to 6,700 and annual giving grow from $500,000

to $1.8 million. He also cultivated the Army Sports Network from two radio stations to 18, including 50,000-watt ESPN 1050 in New York City. During his tenure at West Point, corporate sponsorship revenue jumped from $250,000 to $920,000 annually.

He arrived at West Point from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, where he served as the associate athletics director for external aff airs and executive director of the athletic foundation. Fitzpatrick’s work at Charlotte resulted in a 26-percent increase in annual gifts and a 39-percent increase in planned gifts.

Prior to Army and Charlotte, Fitzpatrick served in a similar role at the University of Pittsburgh. In addition to serving as the men’s basketball sport administrator, he directed a staff that generated a school record $1.4 million in sponsorship revenue and a $125,000 increase in annual giving.

Fitzpatrick was a senior associate athletics director at the University of North Texas from May 1994 to June 1996. He was instrumental in UNT’s transition from NCAA Division I-AA football to the Big West Conference, and during the 1994 football season, North Texas was one of three programs nationally to have every football game televised in its home market. This local television package generated more than $700,000 in corporate sponsorship revenue.

He gained considerable experience as Assistant Commissioner of the Southwest Conference from 1992-94. Fitzpatrick negotiated a $2.25 million, three-year men’s basketball tournament title sponsorship with the Dr. Pepper Company, and he also oversaw the league’s national and local television syndication eff orts.

Fitzpatrick began his athletic administration career as the assistant marketing director at Army before moving on to Virginia Commonwealth as the director of marketing and Ticket Sales (1984-87) and Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing and Public Relations from 1987-92.

A 1981 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College with a bachelor’s degree in English, Fitzpatrick earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University in 1982.

Tim is married to Kerry Marks, and they have a son, James.

Coach John Westkott is in his 16th season as head coach of both the men’s and women’s swim teams. He is the fi rst coach at the Academy to coach both men and women and in his time has had marked success. The athletes in his program have represented the Academy well, and earned conference and national accolades.

In April of 2013, Westkott was inducted into the Rhode Island Aquatics Hall of Fame.

In John’s time at the Academy there have been 47 diff erent individuals achieve NCAA qualifying times, and 37 school records have been broken, most of those records broken numerous times. John has coached an NCAA champion, as well as many All-America selectees and honorable mention selectees. There have been four diff erent swimmers selected as NEWMAC athletes of the year since 1999, and two of those were multiple year recipients of that award. The Coast Guard swimmers and divers are consistently some of the best performers at the conference championship and have earned team success.

John has been honored as NEWMAC Coach of the Year fi ve times and the men’s team has won six conference championship (1999, 2001, 2004 and 2006-2008). Seven other seasons the men have been runners up at the NEWMAC meet. The women have consistently improved to being within the top four fi nishers in recent years.

The men’s team has a pheonominal dual meet record of 111-29 for a winning percentage of .793 under Westkott.

The swimmers and divers also boast success in the classroom, with numerous Scholar All-American selections for individuals and as a program. The men won the prestigious Dean’s Trophy in 2011 for highest grade point average at the Academy. There have been many swimmers and divers selected for aviation training directly from the Academy, a prized posting for commissioned ensigns.

Coach Westkott states, “The goal for our program is to off er the individual a challenging environment that allows the athlete to develop in the sport, as well as a future offi cer and a student. The swimming and diving program has been able to have athletes show dramatic improvement and be successful within the corps of cadets.”

John arrived at the Academy after fi nishing his Master’s Degree in Education at Springfi eld College, where he was an assistant coach for the swimming and diving program, and teaching fellow for the Physical Education Department. John graduated with a Bachelors of Arts from the University of Rhode Island in English and History where he swam and played water polo. Westkott also teaches Physical Education in both the cadet and the Leadership Development Center curriculums at the Academy. In the summer of 2005, Mary competed in the Ironman Lake Placid and had the third fastest time in the women’s swimming out of over 500 entrants.
