First Year as Head Coach at Harford49-37 (3 years at Howard CC)St. Mary’s ‘08

The Harford Athletic Department and Athletic Director Ken Krsolovic announced the hiring of Mike Smelkinson as men’s basketball coach on April 4, 2014. Smelkinson was previously at the helm of the Howard Dragons.

“Mike Smelkinson stood out among a huge pool of applicants. His track record of academic and on-court success for his student-athletes is exemplary,” Krsolovic said. “Add in his familiarity with the MD JUCO Conference, NJCAA Region 20, and his work ethic, and you have a person who can lead the Fighting Owls to new heights in Division I play. I am truly excited for the prospects of the Harford men’s basketball program under his direction.”

During Smelkinson’s three seasons as the head coach at rival Howard, the Dragons were a combined 49-37 overall and 26-19 in MD JUCO play. He took the Dragons to the NJCAA National Tournament in 2013 after winning the Region XX Championship at the Division II level.

Last season, Smelkinson took the Dragons to the Region XX Final while tying for first place in the MD JUCO regular season standings with a 10-6 conference mark. Under Smelkinson’s guidance, Howard finished in the top five of the MD JUCO standings both of the last two seasons.

One of Smelkinson’s specialties seems to be turning around programs. In his first season at Howard, he took the Dragons to 13 victories, more than doubling the previous season’s win total of six. Prior to his stint at Howard, Smelkinson was the head coach for one season at Marriotts Ridge High School, where he took a winless team to eight victories in 2011.

Smelkinson served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, from 2008-10. He assisted in all coaching duties, including recruiting, creating scouting reports, player development and game management duties. During his final year at SMC, Smelkinson was the head coach of the JV squad.

Smelkinson played his final two years of eligibility at St. Mary’s College, helping the team to a 2008 NCAA DIII Sweet 16 appearance and national ranking. The Seahawks won the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament while Smelkinson led the CAC in assists. He started his collegiate career at NCAA DII’s California (Pa.) University, playing in every game from 2004-06.

As a high school standout, Smelkinson earned Howard County Player of the Year honors in 2004 at Long Reach High School.Smelkinson graduated from St. Mary’s College of Maryland in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in human studies. He earned his

master’s degree in education from Walden University in 2013.

Construction and renovation on the Susquehanna Center started in June of 2011. The original facility, which opened in 1968, has now doubled in size and currently provides increased opportunities for fitness in the Dixie Construction Fitness Center, as well as health & physical education classes.

The crown jewel of the new Susquehanna Center is the brand new APG Federal Credit Union Arena at Harford Community College. This state-of-the-art arena is home to three of HCC’s Fighting Owls athletic teams: men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.

As the largest indoor arena in the area, it will also be used for communi-ty and regional events, commencements, concerts, special events, student services, fundraising activities, meetings, conferences, and trade shows. For sporting events, the arena’s capacity is 2,500, and for events with floor seating, the number increases to 3,200.

Harford women won the Presidents’ Cup, while the men finished second for the third-straight season.

Inside the classroom, the Fighting Owls continue to make the grade. The past two seasons have been the best in school histroy, as 275 student-athletes fin-ished a semester with a 3.0 grade-point average, land-ing on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. A Fighting Owl-best 80 student-athletes achieved this feat in the Fall 2012 semester.

The Athletic Department was featured in the NJ-CAA Review in November of 2013 as the National College of the Month. The national monthly mag-azine had a spread of the Fighting Owl facilities and recent success. The new baseball field and APG Federal Credit Union Arena were prominent features in the article.

Later in the school year, the Fighting Owls Student-Ath-lete Advisory Com-mittee (SAAC) was also mentioned in the magazine for its communi-ty service project Shoes2Share.

Harford offers 14 NJCAA Division I Athletic pro-grams and we strive to help our student-athletes com-pete at the highest level, both on the field and in the classroom.

Over the past six seasons, the Fighting Owls have won 28 regional and conference championships, com-peted in numerous championship events and won al-most 800 contests. Twenty-five student-athletes have earned NJCAA All-American honors and over 180 have collected All-Region accolades, while almost 650 student-athletes have been recognized for academic excellence in just the past 10 semesters.

The volleyball and women’s basketball teams both repeated as Region XX Champions while the baseball program won its second Region XX Championship in three years.

All of the on-the-field success led to Harford’s best finish in the annual MD JUCO Presidents’ Cup, a tro-phy given to the most successfull athletic program in the conference. For the second consecutive season, the
