2014-15 reSUlTSRyan Claims Seventh At Midlands

Championships | 12/30/14EVANSTON, Ill. - In the second day of competition, Columbia first-year Garrett Ryan earned a seventh place finish in the heavyweight division, while Tyrel White lost his only match at 165 in the 52nd Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships.

In his first match of the day, Ryan scored a first round takedown on Brock Horwath of Wisconsin with only three seconds left in the round. The first-year was able to rack up the riding time in the second period, before taking the bottom position in the third. Horwath was unable to move Ryan in the final period, preserving a 2-0 win for Columbia.

Against Dawson Peck of Maryland in his second match, Ryan was unable to get points back after being taken down in the first round. Neither wrestler scored a point in the second and third rounds, leading to Peck’s 2-0 victory.

In the last Columbia match of the day, Ryan earned a chance to claim seventh place against Jake Henderson of Old Dominion. Ryan impressed on his way out, earning a 10-1 major decision over the seven seed in the tournament. The first-year now sits at 13-8 on the season, after posting four wins in the tournament.

White dropped his only match today, unable to overcome four first period points by Cal State Bakersfield’s Adam Fierro. The Columbia first-year tallied a takedown in the

third period, but time ran out with him trailing, 4-2. By posting four wins at the Midlands, White improved his record to 13-9 on the season.

Columbia finished the tournament in 24th place with 19.5 points.

Columbia Tops Buffalo, 27-9 | 1/16/15BUFFALO, N.Y. - Columbia improved to 1-1 in dual matches after a 27-9 defeat of Buffalo, in the first half of a weekend road trip upstate. The Lions won eight of ten matches in the dual, including the final seven, on the way to victory.

Johnson Mai helped Columbia to a 3-0 lead after a comeback victory in the first match of the night at 125. After trailing 5-2, the junior scored five points in the third period to earn a 7-5 win.

Already a winner against Justin Cooksey in the New York State Championships, Connor Sutton faced the Buffalo 149-pounder again. Cooksey put up a fight, but a third round escape and riding time gave a 2-0 victory to the Columbia junior.

Markus Scheidel, who has not seen the mats since early December, was back tonight to take on Alex Smythe at 157. Scheidel was dominant from the beginning, scoring two take-downs in the first period. The sophomore allowed three escapes, but came away with an 8-3 win.

At 165, Tyrel White was able to hold of Rrok Ndokaj, 4-3, improving his record to 14-9 on the season.

In the 174-pound match, Muhamad McBryde of Buffalo took on Shane Hughes in one of the most exciting matches of the night. After a lengthy review of a Hughes takedown, the Columbia tri-captain got McBryde on his back, earning a second-round fall. The win increased Columbia’s 12-10 advantage to 18-9, with the Hughes fall counting for six points, and the Bulls being docked a point for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Zack Hernandez and Matt Idelson had bounce-back matches at 184 and 197, both earning victories. Garrett Ryan rounded out the Lions night with a 6-0 decision, giving Columbia a 27-9 win.

Bucknell Gets By Columbia In EIWA Action | 1/23/15

LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell Bison took seven of ten matches from the Columbia wrestling team, en route to a 29-12 victory in an EIWA dual. The Lions won three straight bouts from 157-174, but were unable to pick up any more victories from the No. 23 team in the country.

Bucknell won the first four matches of the night, jumping out to a 16-0 lead. Markus Scheidel helped turn the tide for Columbia, earning a 7-4 win over Rustin Barrick at 157.

In the following match at 165, Tyrel White came out on top over Rob Schlitt in a 5-2 decision. The win helped the Lions to creep back into the contest, with Columbia then trailing 16-6.

The Lions came even closer after a big victory by Shane Hughes at 174. The senior tri-captain was dominant against Brennan McAllister, earning a second round fall at 4:36, and turning what was a 16-0 Bucknell lead into a much slimmer 16-12 margin.

This was as close as Columbia would come however, as the Lions could not earn a win in the last three matches. Bucknell earned bonus points in two of the final three matches, preserving the 29-12 victory.

With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-2 on the season, and 1-2 against EIWA opponents. Columbia has a chance to get back into the win column this Sunday, when American and Hofstra come to Levien Gymnasium for a tri-dual. The Lions will take on the Eagles at 1 p.m. and the Pride at 5 p.m.

After a scoreless first minute, even 30-second escape rounds, and a scoreless second minute, Schleifer earned the victory thanks to a two-second riding-time advantage.

Princeton added major decisions in the 184 and 197 pound bouts, before a Lion victory in the final match of the night. At heavyweight, Garrett Ryan was the aggressor, earning a 7-2 win over Ray O’Donnell. The win put Ryan’s record to 17-11 in his first season on the mats for the Lions.

Scheidel, White Earn NCAA Bids, Lions Finish Fourth At EIWAs

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Markus Scheidel and Tyrel White earned automatic bids into the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Tournament when Columbia took home its best finish at the EIWA Championships since 2004-05, finishing in fourth place with 82 points.

White earned a spot in the third place match after an impressive victory over Johnathan Schleifer of Princeton. In a re-match of a multiple-overtime loss for White, the first-year had it today. The score was tied, 3-3, going into the third, but White was able to add three points in the final period, defeating Schleifer and securing at least fourth place in a weight class that had four automatic bids.

In his final match of the day, White held a 2-1 lead on Army’s Coleman Gracey going into the third period. Gracey was able to earn an escape and a takedown, knocking off White, 4-2. The first-year ended the EIWA’s in fourth place at 4-2, but more importantly earns the NCAA automatic bid.

For Scheidel, the EIWA’s produced his first match since Jan. 25, in what had been an injury-ridden season for the sophomore. In a tough weight class that produced the most NCAA automatic bids in the conference with seven, Scheidel did exactly what he needed to do in order to advance.

The No. 5 seed started his tournament with a 7-0 win over Princeton’s Rich Eva. After a loss to Russell Parsons of Army, Scheidel got by Hofstra’s Jahlani Callender, 3-2. Scheidel looked well on his way to the third place match, but Penn’s Brooks Martino denied the Bay Village, Ohio native in a 8-1 win for the Quaker.

The loss to Martino sent Scheidel to the seventh place match, with a win producing an NCAA bid. Scheidel had a rematch of his first round opponent, and caught Princeton’s Eva early, pinning him in 30 seconds to earn a trip to St. Louis. In addition to Scheidel and White, first-year heavyweight Garrett Ryan Also earned an at-large bid to the NCAAs, giving Columbia three wrestlers competing in St. Louis.

Columbia tied the record for the most place winners for the Lions at the EIWA Championships with the 2007 squad that also placed eight wrestlers. Johnson Mai (125), Angelo Amenta (133), Shane Hughes (174), Zack Hernandez (184), Matt Idelson (197) and Garrett Ryan (HWT) also got their pictures taken on the podium.
