Welcome, to Fort Stockton,Texas! Located in the TransPecos region of the southern

reaches of the vast Permian Basin in theChihuahua Desert of West Texas, FortStockton was originally settled as a cross-roads destination providing protection,provisions and a water supply to westwardbound travelers.

The city is rich in the history of the set-tling of the west and features a downtownNational Register Historic District and thereconstructed and refurbished historic fort,an excellent example of a western frontiermilitary post.

Fort Stockton is a city on the move. Youcan sense it from your first visit, where

Paisano Pete, the world’s largest roadrun-ner, greets you as he hurries by. You cansee it at the Visitor Center, housed in a his-toric train depot, that is now enjoying theresults of countless hours of loving restora-tion. You can hear it in the waterfalls thatsurround the Center, as they echo the Co-manche Springs which first attracted Indi-ans and settlers to the region hundreds ofyears ago. The City of Fort Stockt

on originated around the

Comanche Springs. This natural water feat

ure

was well known to the Comanche Nation

, a

loose confederation of 13 bands. The warli

ke tribe had

been introduced to the horse by the Spania

rd explorers

and they became one of the most gifted mo

unted "Cal-

vary" in our young nations history. They

dominated

the area of two Countries and several fu

ture states

from Durango, Mexico north to present da

y Nebraska.

Their trail followed the grazing habits of t

he Amer-

ican Bison, or Buffalo and Comanche Spr

ings was the

crossroads of their domain. This location a

lso became

the crossroads of the ultimate route for th

Overland Mail route from St. Louis, Mis

souri to San

Francisco, California as well as the choice

for freight

traffic from San Antonio through Paseo

del Norte to

California, and to Chihuahua, Mexico in th

e mid-nine-

teenth century.Unlike the eastern

United States which in pre

Columbian time was a primeval forest, arid

conditions

exist about 100 miles west of an imagina

ry line from

San Antonio and Abilene, Texas. Rainfal

l diminishes

drastically to less than 20 inches per year

to even less

in many parts of the Chihuahuan Desert in M

exico and

the United States. Surface water was cr

itical, few

rivers exist, and almost no timber. Acces

s to natural

springs became a fight between the no

madic Co-

manches and Spanish and later Mexican pe

ople. After

1836, citizens mostly from the American S

outh began

to migrate west into Texas.

The U.S. Army stepped in to establish Cam

p Stock-

ton in 1859 to protect residents of St. G

all and the

wagon roads. This post was abandoned

during the

American Civil War and re-established in 1

867 as Fort

Stockton. The Fort was garrisoned by wh

ite officers

and predominately black troops which

the Indians

called Buffalo Soldiers. The post was deco

mmissioned

in 1886 when the Indian “problem” had

passed. The

mixed community of Hispanic, White,

and Blacks

flourished using the springs to irrigate thei

r crops and

some 30 other springs in Pecos County fo

r watering

stock on surrounding ranches.

Today, Fort Stockton is still a major cross

roads in-

cluding several state highways and bus

y Interstate

Highway 10. A well-equipped air park and

rail access

also exist. The dominance of agriculture h

as declined

over the years. In 1928, a large pool of oil w

as discov-

ered in eastern Pecos County. Later sub

stantial re-

sources of natural gas were discovere

d with new

technology which is still ongoing. Now our

three main

industries are Energy, Energy, and Energy

. In addition

to Oil and Gas production, wind has been

exploited to

produce energy and solar power is a few y

ears off but

very attractive due to our 300 days of suns

hine.

for us to make an impression that will last you a lifetime. The Chamber can be utilized as a resource to local businesses, visitors, and the community as a whole. With

a history of helping to build a stronger community by hosting several events and programs, the chamber con-

tinues to promote business growth by providing service and educational guidance. The Chamber has a very hard working and dedicated staff consisting of Executive Vice President Arna Mc-

Corkle, Bookkeeper and Membership Development Coordinator, Kay Hemphill; and Visitor Center Coordina-

tor, Laura Stoner. The chamber staff is in place to help serve the community and provide services to you and

your business so please feel free to contact them with any questions or concerns.Our organization consists of over 210 members and is directed by the board of directors and officers. We are

dedicated to serving area businesses, churches and civic organizations.Our board members are volunteers from local businesses. The board meets monthly to address issues and to

develop policies and programs to enhance business and community opportunities. Some of these opportunities

include the annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet, Glitz, annual Christmas parade, and 4th of July celebra-

tion.Finally, we work very closely with the many civic clubs in our community. Club members are always willing

to assist and provide resources and personnel for many beneficial programs for our citizens and business com-

munity.We have experienced huge growth in our organization over the years and have seen a great increase in our

Historic Fort StocktonHistoric Fort Stockton, strategically placed at Comanche Springs,

was active from 1867 to 1886. Today, four of the original 35 fort build-ings remain, including the Guard House and three officer’s quarters.Two of the barracks and two kitchen/mess halls have been recon-structed. The Historic Fort Stockton Museum is located in Barracks #1on the east side of the parade grounds.A support group, Friends of Fort Stockton, assists in fund raising for

the continued development of the Fort. Visitors should proceed to Bar-racks #1 to pay the visitor fee and pick-up a complete guide to the fort,including buildings open for visiting and event schedule.

ParksRooney Park, and the other city parks, are the family activity and

recreation centers featuring walking paths, play ground and picnicequipment, basketball, tennis, soccer and volleyball facilities.

County AttractionsFort Stockton-Pecos County Airport Opened in June 1942 with two

2,500 foot turf runways, the airport was named Gibbs Field or FortStockton Field and was used by the United States Army Air Forces asa training base during WWII. It began training United States Army AirCorps flying cadets under contract to Pacific Air School Ltd usingFairchild PT-19s, PT-17s and a few P-49 Warhawks. Inactivated in 1944 with the drawdown of AAFTC’s pilot training

program, it was discharged to the War Assets Administration (WAA)and became a civil airport, today serving as a county airport. Full serv-ices are available including 24/7 FBO services and major and minorA&P mechanics. Jet A and 100LL are normally stocked. The field

Fort Stockton is a General LawType A municipality and the mu-nicipal government is the council-manager form of government. Thegoverning body of the city is theCity Council which consists of an

elected Mayor and five (5) CouncilMembers. There are two regularCity Council meetings per month,the second and fourth Tuesday.The City Manager is appointed bythe City Council and is the chief

Youth Leadership of FortStockton is a program sponsoredby the Chamber of Commerce. Itsmission is: to promote a commu-nity based educational programwhere Fort Stockton high schoolstudents will be challenged to become the future leaders of Texas andour nation. The program accepts applications from high school seniorsat the beginning of the school year. Ten students are selected basedon their answers.

Youth Leadership begins with an orientation to the program. Theorientation is designed to build a bond between the students by havingthem participate in team building exercises. The program then meetsonce a month during the students’ lunch hour for a total of nine meet-ings. The meetings are designed to educate the students on the fol-lowing topics: economic development, financial planning, preparingfor college, community service, top three industries in Pecos Country,health services, and regional planning.

At the end of the year, Youth Leadership awards scholarships tothree students who have accumulated the most points. Students accu-mulate points by attending the monthly meetings, volunteering, andmentoring. Scholarship money is raised by private donations andfundraiser and will be handed out by the donator at the end of the year.

The Water CarnivalRooney Park is home to the historic Co-manche Springs Pavilion and Swimming Poolbuilt in 1938 over the Big Chief Spring. Thepool is the site of Fort Stockton’s annual WaterCarnival, which includes hundreds of partici-pants as synchronized swimmers, actors ordancers portraying a theatrical plot. JamesRooney Memorial Park is a shady and spa-cious park with picnic areas, a walking trail,ball fields, basketball and tennis courts.

Big Bend Open Road RaceFort Stockton is the starting point for this“most challenging open road race in theworld” held the 4th Saturday in April alongHwy. 285 to Sanderson (59 miles each way).This event draws hundreds to the area and of-fers excitement for all ages. Annie Riggs Museum • Treasure of Pecos CountyThe Annie Riggs Memorial Museum still

keeps house with the past amid exhibitsechoing yesteryear in Pecos County. It isowned and operated by the Fort StocktonHistorical Society. The Museum is housedin an original adobe structure that was theRiggs Hotel (built 1899) where Annie Riggswas the proprietor until her death in 1931. Riggs purchased the hotel in 1904 with

the proceeds from the estate of her late hus-band, the renowned gunslinger and allaround troublemaker, Barney Riggs, whowas shot and killed by Buck Chadborn(Annie’s son-in-law) in 1902. Hanging onthe wall are Annie’s House Rules addressingguests with no luggage, spitting on the floorand the “burning of light” unnecessarily. In the lobby, a stern-faced lineage of sher-

iffs gaze down at visitors. The desk fromSheriff A.J. Royal’s office whispers of his1894 murder, a bloody chapter in the historyof Pecos County. On the desk is a 1902 bal-lot box from Sheffield, which was fished outof the Pecos River after being tossed therewhen the folks in East Pecos County ob-jected to an election that didn’t suit them.The parlor, dining room, kitchen and one

guest room are furnished much as they wereduring the hotel’s heyday. The cast iron bedin the guest room was ordered from Searsand Roebuck in 1900 for a cost of $6.75, in-cluding freight. Other rooms offer displays on the area’s

vast and diversified history. The Archeol-ogy and Geology Room exhibits the tusks ofa Columbian mammoth and related artifactsfound at a site eight miles from town. Visi-tors learn of geologic formations and cometo understand why this area has plentiful oiland gas resources. features country and folk music perform-ances every other Thursday evening duringthe summer months. Concerts are free andvisitors welcome. The Annie Riggs Memo-rial Museum is open six days a week and islocated at the corner of Main and Callaghanin Historic Downtown Fort Stockton.

Leadership Fort Stockton

The purpose of the LeadershipFort Stockton program is to pro-vide an intense broad base educa-tion concerning Fort Stocktonand it’s community issues, inorder to broaden the current lead-ership knowledge of Fort Stock-ton and cultivate new leaders andvolunteer manpower for the com-munity awareness and growth.

This will be accomplished byselecting 10 sponsored applica-tions per year to attend a ninemonth program in which eachmonth will focus on a differentsector of the community consid-ered to have the greatest impacton community issues. These sec-tors are defined as:

Each month a one-day trainingsession will be held that is de-signed to intensely cover all as-pects of that months issue.

The cost for the program is$250.00 which includes a week-end orientation and team buildingretreat, all program materials,and other relate cost such asspeakers, facilities etc. Each ap-plication must have a sponsorand employer support and ap-proval.

Any sessions missed may bemade up through extra work, butabsence is limited to no more thantwo sessions. Top graduates willbe recognized for the most pointsearned.

• First National Bank, con-structed in 1912, now houses theFort Stockton Police Department.

• Grey Mule Saloon, circa1890, one of several saloons inearly Fort Stockton, a coffee shopand gathering facility is now awine tasting room.

• Annie Riggs Memorial Mu-seum, originally the KoehlerHotel built in 1899 and operatedas a boarding house. It is nowowned by the Fort Stockton His-torical Society and features ex-hibits of local and regionalhistory. Call 432-336-2167 forhours of operation.

• Pecos County Courthouse,constructed in 1912 and reno-vated in the 1930’s. Fort Stock-ton has been the Pecos Countyseat since the county was organ-ized in 1875.

• Zero Stone Memorial Parkis home to The Zero Stone, thegeographical center of the countyand the point from which all lotsin St. Gall and the building of the

original Camp Stockton were ref-erenced.

• In 1877 the first permanentchurch was built near ComancheSprings, St. Joseph’s CatholicChurch, an adobe building withstone foundation. Many restora-tions and improvements weremade through the years, but theoriginal adobe walls remain, mak-ing St. Joseph’s one of the oldestadobe churches in the TransPecos region.

• Historic Pecos County Jail,constructed of native sandstoneand completed in 1884, now op-erated by the Pecos County His-torical Commission and featuresthe Pecos County Law Enforce-ment Museum.

• Originally an officers’ clubwith living quarters, Young’sStore opened in 1876 as a generalstore and saloon.

• Comanche Springs Pool andPavilion, at one time the thirdlargest source of spring water inTexas and the reason for the aris-

ing of the travelers crossroads, thebuilding of nearby Camp Stock-ton and the settlement of the orig-inal St. Gall. Today the pool, constructed in

1953, is a center of summer com-munity activity and hosts the an-nual Fort Stockton WaterCarnival.

• St. Stephens EpiscopalChurch, one of the oldest protes-tant churches west of the Pecos,was constructed in Pecos in 1896and moved to Fort Stockton in1958. Services are still held today.

CALENDAROF EVENTSThe Fort Stockton Chamber of Commerce sponsors sev-

eral annual events each year. Our first event is theChamber Banquet in which we honor our membership.

The event is also an awards banquet in which we honor numerousindividuals in our community.

Among the awards given, we honor our outgoing President,the Ambassador of the Year, and the Boss Ambassador. A travel-ing trophy is also presented. This award is decided by an anony-mous group of judges. Businesses are able to purchase tables forthis event and decorate them using the theme each year. The ta-bles are unbelievably decorated and the judges must choose oneas the favorite for the year. This table is presented with the trav-eling trophy and gets to have the trophy until the next year’s ban-quet. It is always a lot of fun.

We also honor several individuals each year. We give an awardfor the Outstanding Student of the Year, chosen by the Fort Stock-ton High School staff, the Presidential Make a Difference Award,

chosen by the Chamber President honoring an individual or groupwho has made a difference in our community in the past year, andthe Outstanding Male and Female Citizen of the Year, nominatedby the community and chosen by a secret committee consistingof past citizens of the year and past Chamber presidents.

If you have never been to one of our banquets, we encourageyou to attend. They are lots of fun and it is our chance to say thankyou to our members and our community.

Our next event each year is the 4th of July Celebration. Thisevent is held each year in James Rooney Park and is a great wayfor your family to spend this special holiday. There is always lotsof good food provided by numerous venders, craft and noveltyvenders, games for children and adults, food contest, music, andending the day with a fireworks display. Bring your family outand spend the day with us and enjoy this special day.

During our summer months we also have a series of free con-certs at Zero Stone Park. These events are scheduled every other

Friday evening in June, July and August. There are differentbands each evening and is a great way to spend a relaxing and en-joyable time with the family. Bring your picnic baskets, lawnschairs, family and friends and come join us for these free concerts.They are presented by the Fort Stockton Public Library.

Our final annual event each year is Holiday Glitz. The Glitzis a shop local campaign done each year which highlights a fash-ion show from our local merchants as well as food samples fromour local restaurants. This helps you with your holiday partiesand gift giving ideas. The Glitz is a great success each year as weshowcase local models in fashions from each of our participatingbusinesses. We showcase everything from sportswear to formalwear. Our community has lots to offer and this is a chance to letyou know what is available right here in Fort Stockton.

We hope that if you haven’t attended any of these events thatyou will attend this year. We promise you will have a lot of funand will be surprised at what our community has to offer.
