Freder ik Mei jer Gar den s & Sc ul pt ur e Par k Annual Report 2014

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park promotes the

enjoyment, understanding & appreciation of gardens,

sculpture, the natural environment & the arts.

In fiscal year 2014, Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park welcomed 625,536 guests. Visitors enjoyed our permanent sculpture and horticulture collections, concerts and education programs. Three annual exhibitions drew hundreds of thousands of visitors to experience the bountiful fall horticulture displays during Chrysanthemums and More!, the spirit of the holidays with Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World, and the wonder and beauty of tropical butterflies in the exhibition Butterflies Are Blooming. Three temporary sculpture exhibitions offered guests the opportunity to explore the depth and breadth of Contemporary art. The fall exhibition Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass, served as ArtPrize at Meijer Gardens. Winter brought a unique treasury of ideas and imagery to our galleries with the exhibition Committed to Paper: Master Drawings and Prints by Sculptors which featured preparatory and master drawings of completed works. David Nash: From Kew Gardens to Meijer Gardens featured a wide array of wood and bronze sculptures, complemented by drawings, by British artist David Nash. Meijer Gardens has also commissioned Nash for a unique, site-specific planting involving dozens of young larch trees on the open hillside in The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden, opening June 13, 2015.

The Fifth Third Bank Summer Concerts at Meijer Gardens is intentionally planned to host artists that will draw people from all walks of life. Classic rock favorites are always popular and this year included The Beach Boys, The Moody Blues and Ray LaMontagne. Returning artists such as O.A.R., The John Butler Trio and Lyle Lovett and his Large Band once again delighted audiences. New artists to Meijer Gardens like Santana, John Legend, Counting Crows and Barenaked Ladies were also audience favorites. Tickets sold exceeded 54,000, an indication that great music is a wonderful way to connect people to our broader mission of art and horticulture. Similarly popular, the Tuesday Evening Music Club series, free with admission every Tuesday evening

in July and August, featured local and regional bands. More than 111,000 people enjoyed shows from bands such as Matt Gabriel, Chain of Lakes, Mid-Life Crisis and An Dro, among many others.

Meijer Gardens is extremely thankful to be afforded the opportunity to create The Richard & Helen DeVos Japanese Garden. With excavation, structures and much of the infrastructure having been completed in 2013, construction continued at a strong pace throughout 2014. Our attention then turned to planting horticulture and installing sculptures. The Japanese Garden will open to the public on June 13, 2015.

It is very important for us to publish this annual report each year as a way to honor and thank our donors for making Meijer Gardens grow. Fred and Lena Meijer have given so generously to make this institution possible and for that we are incredibly grateful. Together, the thousands of gifts we receive sustain our robust education programs and lectures, allow for great exhibitions to be presented and help maintain and grow our extensive buildings and grounds.

On behalf of our Board of Directors, staff and volunteers we are humbled by your generosity. Please know it is most appreciated.

Gratefully,

David S. Hooker President and CEO

Welcome

Butterflies Are BloomingOur most popular annual horticulture exhibition featured thousands of tropical butterflies in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory and a display of monarch caterpillars. Native to Michigan, Monarch caterpillars were on display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse feeding on milkweed plants. More than 169,000 guests visited during March and April, 2014, to enjoy Butterflies Are Blooming.

Chrysanthemums and More!Truly an autumn horticulture feast for the senses, the expanded Chrysanthemums and More! featured mums throughout the gardens and grounds, with a spectacular tower of mums on display in the Seasonal Display Greenhouse, which creatively incorporated not only mums, but plantings of cabbage, kale, millet and more! The increasingly popular Mum Day in October offered members and guests horticulture demonstrations, walking tours and interactions with our expert horticulturists. More than 78,000 guests visited during Chrysanthemums and More!

Holiday TraditionsThe Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World exhibition in FY 2014 (calendar year 2013) put a special focus on nature. Many people use natural materials as a way to celebrate their holiday traditions and customs and we prominently featured those in our promotion, our educational programming and the presentation

of our displays. Some of the cultural traditions involving natural materials that were on display included Lithuanian straw ornaments, Japanese kadomatsu, English mistletoe and Mexican poinsettias. The much-loved Railway Garden display included natural components like twigs, bark and seedpods and five new buildings were added including Fifth Third Ballpark, Jersey Junction, Paddock Place (now Mangiamo!), Meyer May House and Voigt House.

In addition, a new Korean display debuted featuring an authentic hanbok, the traditional dress of seollal, the Korean New Year, This exquisite garment was made of vibrant, natural silk with intricate detailing. More than 79,000 guests delighted in the displays of Christmas and Holiday Traditions Around the World.

Other HighlightsAlexandra Fuller gave the Great Author Lecture entitled A Life in Writing. An informing and entertaining lecture based on her memoir, Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, Fuller shared her love of writing and her skill at highlighting the natural beauty of the African landscape. The Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offered kid-friendly plantings that were chosen for their appeal to the senses. At the West Michigan Home and Garden Show, our expert horticulturists gave presentations for attendees. Plant Shows remained a popular destination for horticulture fans including the Orchid Show, the Michigan All-State Bonsai Show and many more.

Hort ic ul t ur e Annual Report 2014

From the autumn splendor of chrysanthemums to the natural beauty

of holiday traditions, from spring bulbs transitioning to summer

blooms, our gardens displayed horticultural artistry all year long.

Committed to Paper: Master Drawings & Prints by Sculptors Committed to Paper: Master Drawings and Prints by Sculptors featured preparatory drawings created in anticipation of and master drawings and prints completed as meditations after completed works of sculpture. In addition, life studies and compositional sketches by leading Modern and Contemporary sculptors for whom works on paper are significant to their repertoire were also included. Many of the works included were shown for the first time including numerous gifts to the permanent collection from the artists themselves given in honor of sculpture enthusiast and patron Frederik G. H. Meijer (1919-2011).

David Nash: From Kew Gardens to Meijer GardensDavid Nash: From Kew Gardens to Meijer Gardens featured a wide array of wood sculptures, complemented by drawings, displayed throughout the galleries, with a carefully selected group of bronzes displayed in the Arid and Tropical Conservatories. Additionally, three major works were on view outdoors. The massive Iron Dome, composed of 46 elements, was on display in the Sculpture Park not far from the permanent display of Nash’s iconic King and Queen.

ArtPrize/ Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in GlassShattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass was ArtPrize at Meijer Gardens and served as the fall sculpture exhibition. This exhibition explored the depth and dimension of sculpture by artists working in glass. A sculptural entity in its own right, contemporary glass is marked by creative, conceptual and formal explorations in keeping with the dynamic persona of Contemporary art as a whole. The exhibition broke down preconceptions about glass art and shattered traditional boundaries for an understanding of sculpture as well. As a result, this presentation offered a global panorama of contemporary glass. This exhibition was organized in partnership with Habatat Gallery.

Permanent Collection AdditionsAcquisitions to the collection included gifts in honor of Fred Meijer, such as 2-D and 3-D works by artists such as Lee Ufan, Jaume Plensa, Joel Shapiro and Mimmo Paladino. Acquisitions included Heard by Kiki Smith, a gift of the artist in honor of Fred Meijer. Works to be sited in The Richard and Helen DeVos Japanese Garden include Sabre Larch Hill, by David Nash and It Will Continue to Grow Except at that Point, by Giuseppe Penone.

Sculpt ur e Annual Report 2014

The Sculpture program hosted a group show of sculpture in glass,

works on paper by artists in our collection and a significant

display of sculpture by David Nash.

Classes, Camps & Special EventsClasses for children as young as four and many for adults were offered throughout the year and continued to be popular. Cooking classes such as Butterfly Biscuits, Great Garlic and Cooking with Root Vegetables drew new participants. And all four bus trips were sellouts: The Magic of Glass, Ann Arbor Art Fair, Sleeping Bear Dunes and The Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Summer camps covered a variety of themes, from Rocks and Fossils to Outdoor Watercolor, and many had waiting lists.

Arts & Sculpture ProgramsDavid Nash’s sculpture exhibition, titled David Nash: From Kew Gardens to Meijer Gardens, included a variety of informal gallery walks by both horticulture and sculpture staff, and A Living Legacy, a film documenting the artist’s work was premiered and then shown continuously in the Hoffman Auditorium. David Nash himself delivered the annual Art and Sculpture Lecture to an enthusiastic crowd of 350 people. For our ArtPrize exhibition, Shattered: Contemporary Sculpture in Glass, we presented a panel discussion with nine of the artists and developed a school program for middle and high school students.

Garden & Plant PresentationsPlant shows were presented throughout the year, from the smaller Rose, and Daylily Shows to the more all-encompassing Orchid and All-State Bonsai Shows. The Secchia Garden Lecture presenter was Peter Hatch, the former director of gardens and grounds at Monticello. Titled Thomas Jefferson’s Revolutionary Garden, the lecture focused on the 30-year restoration of Jefferson’s extensive gardens. With much positive feedback, we continued to offer a second year of our Explore the Outdoor Gardens tram tours.

School ProgramsMore than $134,000 in revenue was brought in by school tours and programs, with increasing numbers of classroom activities added to complement school tours. Though hundreds of individual classes came for field trips, some programs have a wider scope: all Head Start students in Kent County experience the Children’s Garden, all Grand Rapids Public Schools 4th graders enjoy Art and Science of Observation Tours, and all Grand Rapids Public Schools 6th graders step up to Fitness Fun in the Sculpture Park challenges.

Family ProgramsAnimal Adventures, a collaboration with John Ball Zoo, focused on four animals, with kid-friendly activities for each one. Who Am I: Butterfly Ballet, a collaboration with the Grand Rapids Ballet, presented the second year of a unique butterfly story told through dance, and Cozy Tales for Winter Days entertained preschoolers with themed stories and related activities. In the Children’s garden we celebrated our tenth anniversary with a day-long event filled with activities in all ten component areas, and we added two new permanent attractions—a black granite turtle in the Rock Quarry and a magnetic “underwater” fish activity in the Great Lakes area. Michigan’s Farm Garden continued its popular family weekends and its community quilt-making project.
