2014 ANNUAL REPORT

PAINTING A BRIGHTER FUTURE

Dear Friends,

As we reflect on all of the remarkable things which have been accomplished

by Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation in the past year, I would be

remiss if I didn’t extend our gratitude for the enduring partnership of all our

donors and fundraisers.

It’s not one event or one donor but each of you that make it possible for us to

carry out our mission to eliminate pediatric cancer and to provide hope and

support to those who are touched by it. This past year, over fifty-five events

were held for Bear Necessities by outside organizations and groups to assist

us in our fundraising goals. We couldn’t possibly have the impact we have in

the lives of these children and families without this incredible support. Be it a

student holding a birthday party to a fashion show, I see such compassion for

others it truly warms my heart.

One day I hope to tell you our work is no longer necessary. But that day

has not yet arrived. More children continue to be diagnosed or relapse with

childhood cancers, more children continue to die from this disease daily and

yet less than 4% of federal funding which is allocated for cancer research is

provided for childhood cancers.

With your help, we will continue growing to meet the needs of our expanding

community and we will care for more children and families who need our help

the most. This is our purpose, this is our promise.

Warmest regards,

Kathleen A. Casey

Last March was the 21st annual Bear Tie Ball which is the organization’s largest fundraising event raising $650,000, and attracting over 600 philanthropic-minded individuals dedicated to making a positive difference for children affected by cancer. This year’s fundraiser, “Into the Wild, A Road to the Cure” was chaired by Candace Jordan with Peggy Kusinski, from NBC5 Chicago, serving as the emcee. Guests enjoyed cocktails, dinner, auction, and dancing to the Stu Hirsh Orchestra. The evening also included the presentation of the 2014 Hope Awards to the Magellan Corporation and Dr. Stewart Goldman; a heartwarming story of strength from the honorary Bear Hug Ambassador, Abigail McDonald; and remarks from Bear Necessities CEO/founder, Kathleen Casey.

“This year’s ball gave us a chance to celebrate all the amazing people and sponsors who have helped us grow over the years, but more importantly to celebrate the thousands of families who we fight for through our research and support programs,” said Casey.

Sponsors included: Aon Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, the Chicago Cubs, Tom & Donna Itrich, Dave & Marcia Knuepfer, Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Foundation, Mario & Cheryl Tricoci, Magellan Corporation, Focus Capital, Mr. Paul R. Iacono, Fiji Water, Blue Plate Catering,

In 2013-2014, the Auxiliary Board, in its 8th year has surpassed 60 young professional members committed to the mission raising awareness and funds to support the Foundation’s mission.

The Auxiliary Board hosted two major service events for the kids touched by Bear Necessities. The highlight of the year was the 4th Annual Teddy Bear Ball at the Lincoln Park Zoo in which patients and their families were invited for a day of crafts, face painting, and a magician. This year was a record attendance with more than 40 families participating in the special day. The second was the annual Creative Collaborations held on two separate days to allow more children to participate. This event is hosted at the office allowing the kids to use their creative side and make art that was auctioned off at both the Purple Affair for the Bear and the Bear Tie Ball.

The Auxiliary Board hosted 3 smaller fundraisers located at local establishments over the year. While raising funds for Bear Necessities during these events, they also worked to spread the word to the younger professional community about all the good work this organization does for pediatric cancer. The board’s major fundraising event was the 8th Annual Signature event, Purple Affair for the Bear: With a 1920’s Flair was held in January 2014 at The Chicago Cultural Center in the Preston Bradley Hall. With over 600 guests in attendance, the Auxiliary Board raised over $62,000 for Bear Necessities.

Kavi was diagnosed with Sarcoma in early 2013 at 7 years old. After his diagnosis he began a vigorous treatment including two surgeries and extensive rounds of chemotherapy.

His initial idea for his Bear Hug was to go to an indoor waterpark, but with a port for his treatment the waterpark was not an option. His next idea had been to attend a Chicago Bears Game. But, unfortunately with the cold weather of a Chicago December, combined with the fact that Kavi was still in treatment, it was decided that a Bears game may not be the best idea either. Luckily, our amazing community partners, The Chicago Bears felt so bad Kavi could not go to a game that they offered the next best opportunity: to attend “spring training” at Halas Hall!

On June 9th, Kavi in his new Jay Culter jersey, along with his Mom, Dad, and brother were picked up in style by a car service provided by O’Hare-Midway Limousine. He was then taken to Halas Hall for the Bears spring practice. While there, Kavi and his family were able to watch practice from the new viewing box with a wonderful catered lunch provided by the Bears staff. After practice was complete, they were allowed to go out by the practice fields and meet with many of the players including Kavi’s favorite player, Jay Cutler and Head Coach, Mark Trestman.

“This was such a memorable event for our whole family, especially Kavi. Thank you very much for making this possible.” Darshana, Kavi’s Mom.

Special thanks to The Chicago Bears and O’Hare-Midway Limousine for making this special experience possible!

One of Bear Necessities’ signature fundraising events, Golf for the Bear brings golfers from across the Chicagoland area together to drive out pediatric cancer. The 2014 event was themed “Sombreo Open” and held on Thursday, June 12th at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, IL.

The day included lunch for everyone before a shotgun start and 18 challenging holes full of contests like H2O_NOOO!!! (Closest to the water but not in it drive), Beat the Bear with the former Chicago Bear Brad Maynard, Taco Bout Your Straightest Drive, and many more. We had our Bear Hug Ambassadors Samantha, Dominic, Ella Joy, and Enzo present at the course to help Bear Necessities make it an even more fun and successful event.

After golf guests enjoyed cocktails and dinner, as well as a great Mexican raffle, and a live auction featuring foursomes at exclusive clubs, fine wine, and signed memorabilia from some of our favorite Chicago athletes! The 2014 event was a great success, raising $68,000 to help Bear Necessities help kids just like Ella Joy and Enzo and so many others in the fight of their lives!

Special thanks go to the Golf for the Bear Committee: Patrick Troy (Chairman) and Mike Agema (Vice Chairman), and all of our volunteers.

2013 – 2014 Bear Discoveries Funding

Bear Necessities recruits clinician scientists and investigators from top-ranked institutions, rigorously reviews proposed projects investigating pediatric cancer-specific drug targets, and provides substantial seed funding for novel ideas with the highest potential for advancing research. Bear Necessities’ funded investigators have published over 1000 scientific articles and have obtained over $20 million in federal funding in cancer research following their BN-funded projects.

Collaborating with other organizations, Bear Necessities knows that by working together, more can be accomplished towards the goal of eliminating pediatric cancer.

Bear Discoveries

“Bear Necessities’ support is giving my colleagues and me the opportunity to pursue critically important projects in cancer research which we hope will result in improved outcomes for childhood cancer patients throughout the world.”

Grant Recipient: Dr. Alejandro Sweet-Cordero Stanford University School of Medicine

Team Bear the Challenge is the endurance fundraising program for people who run, bike, swim, and walk to help the many children battling cancer.

In addition to competing in marathons, half marathons, triathlons and other races across the country, members of Team Bear commit to raising funds for Bear Necessities. By adding a charitable focus to their physical challenge, members of Team Bear know all too well that crossing the finish line is just the beginning on the road to making an impact in the lives of children and families battling pediatric cancer.
