GREETINGS MUSTANG FANS!Making a difference. Something we all want to accomplish in our lives. When one gives to the Mustang Booster Club, they

are making a difference in the education and future lives of more than 350 student-athletes. Additionally, they are making a

difference in the future success of the Athletics Department and its 17 men’s and women’s sports teams and all that it

provides to our university and community. There are many benefits in becoming a Mustang Booster Club member, which

include tickets, parking, hospitality, Mustang apparel and a variety of unique, up-close experiences with our athletic

program. As a member of the Mustang Booster Club you play a vital role in helping Mustang Athletics achieve success.

Contributions to this important effort support Mustang student-athletes who excel in the classroom, in their sport, and in

service to the community. That is a difference that lasts a lifetime.

The Mustang Booster Club is an organizationdedicated to supporting, promoting andadvancing SMSU athletics.

The objectives of the Mustang Booster Club are:

• To provide scholarship dollars for SMSU athletics.

• To enhance the profile and visibility of the SMSU athletic program, its teams, and its student-athletes.

• To expand the level and scope of support for the SMSU athletic program among thecommunity and alumni.

• To strengthen and establish positive relations with the community and alumniin support of SMSU athletics.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MUSTANG ATHLETE

BRIENNA DEHKES, 2014 Spring Semester

• 9:30 am - Alarm goes off telling me it’s a beautiful Tuesdaymorning! I am not an early bird so it’s very nice beingable to sleep in.

• 10:00 am - After I get dressed I go to the school Café and eat peanutbutter toast with banana slices. This is my favoritebreakfast!

• 10:30 am - I report to my first class of the day, Intro to Education.This is a very fun class and I enjoy the environment ofthe class room

• 11:45 am - Class ends and I have a small break between classes . I head up the library to check my mail and D2L forupcoming assignments.

• 12:30 pm - Lunch time! Best part of the day because I get to eat withall of my friends.

• 1:30 pm - My second class of the day rolls around. I haveacademic writing with Professor Pacheco. I enjoy writingand my classmates.

• 3:00 pm - Finally my last class of the day, Psychology withChristine Olsen. This is my favorite class of the daybecause it is so interesting and I plan on majoring inPsychology.

• 4:15 pm - Happy to be done with my busy afternoon but the day issurely not over. After class I grab a quick snack from mydorm and head back to the library to get somehomework done before practice.

• 5:30 pm - Time to get dressed and ready for soccer! Have to get mymind right and prepared for upcoming spring games.

• 8:00 pm - Finally, done with practice and I head back to my dormto shower and eat. Usually I eat soup, chips and salsa fordinner. Sometimes I treat myself to Subway, but being acollege student that rarely happens.

• 9:30 pm - My favorite part of the day is lying in my warm bed andwatching Netflix. I enjoy watching National Geographicdocumentaries or discovery channel. They keep meinterested and I love learning new information.

• 11:00 pm - Time to hit the hay, it’s been a long day and I will needthe sleep for the rest of the week. It has been awonderful day and I cannot wait to start up againtomorrow!

SMSU CIVICENGAGEMENT EVENTS

MUSTANG BOOSTER CLUBCIVIC ENGAGEMENT EVENTS

Ag BowlAg Bowl is a community event that celebrates agriculture insouthwestern Minnesota. Ag Bowl offers regional FFA Chapters andindividual participants an opportunity to earn post secondaryscholarship dollars by competing in the Ag Bowl ScholarshipChallenge. The Challenge winners are recognized at Half-time ofthe Ag Bowl Football Game. Prior to the Mustang Football game,families are treated to a variety of activities at the Schwan RegionalEvent Center. Ag Bowl family activities include a youth footballclinic, inflatable games, pony rides, live music, and barbecueofferings. In addition to the Ag Bowl Scholarship Challenge and AgBowl family activities, participants can choose to participate in theAg Bowl Raffle. All proceeds from the Ag Bowl Raffle aredesignated to the SMSU Scholarship Fund. Since its inception, AgBowl has received the NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on twodifferent occasions.

WBCA Pink ZoneThe WBCA Pink Zone is an NCAA sponsored event that raisesawareness and funds for breast cancer treatment and research. EachFebruary at a home women’s and men’s basketball double header,the R/A Facility is decorated pink to show support. The teams andcheerleaders wear special pink warm-ups and uniforms to showsupport for the cause. The women’s basketball team also sells theirwarm-up shirts to students and fans and donates all the proceeds tothe Kay Yow Cancer Fund. At halftime volunteers gather on thecourt to donate at least 10 inches of hair to the Locks of Loveprogram.

SmokefestSmokefest is an officially sanctioned Kansas City BBQ Societycontest held on the SMSU campus and hosted by the SMSUDepartment of Athletics. In 2011 Smokefest partnered with theCity of Marshall’s Sounds of Summer Celebration. Smokefest servesas the central location for Friday evening activities during the SOSweek long celebration. Each year nearly 40 barbecue teamsdescend on Marshall to test their BBQ skills in four categories: porkribs, chicken, pork butt and beef brisket. Smokefest activitiesinclude; kids inflatables, carnival games, music, authentic BBQofferings and a movie hosted at the Schwan Regional Event Centeron the SMSU Campus. Since its inception, Smokefest has receivedthe NCAA’s Civic Engagement Award on two different occasions.

Mustang StampedeThe Mustang Stampede is a 5K Walk/Run through SMSU’s campusthat brings together teams, parents, fans, and alumni in support ofSMSU’s women’s athletics teams. Participants can join asindividuals or by forming fundraising teams and compete for themost team members or most dollars raised.

Mustang MailMustang Mail is a pen pal program created and supported by theMustang Booster Club. All SMSU student-athletes are paired upwith students from Marshall Elementary Schools. Students writeand receive letters talking about the importance of school, and whatit means to be a Mustang. During the spring semester we host“Mustang Mail Day” at each school and all students get the chanceto meet their student-athlete pal.

Mustang ShootoutThe Mustang Shootout is a clay shooting competition held annuallyat Shooter’s Sporting Clays in Marshall, MN. Each year nearly onehundred participants form teams to compete for the best team andindividual scores. The Mustang Booster Club helps sponsor theevent with proceeds going towards scholarships for student-athletes.

David & Carol Drown SMSU Golf ClassicThe SMSU Golf Classic is SMSU’s longest running fundraiser. In2011 the SMSU Golf Classic was renamed the David & CarolDrown SMSU Golf Classic. David & Carol Drown first started theevent 29 years ago and remain actively involved in the planning ofthe event each year. This event is hosted by the Mustang BoosterClub with proceeds dedicated to student-athlete scholarships atSMSU. It includes golf at the Marshall Golf Club.

Gold Rush RaffleThe Gold Rush Raffle is SMSU Athletics’ and the Mustang BoosterClub’s largest annual fundraiser. The Raffle is the event to be at onSMSU’s campus. A limited number of tickets are sold for thereverse raffle. Live and silent auctions are also included in theevent, along with black jack games and a variety of great prizes.The grand prize of $5000 is awarded to the raffle ticket holderwhose name is the last to be drawn throughout the night.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS• Gifts totaling a minimum of $10,000 are required to establish an

endowed scholarship fund.• Scholarships are awarded from the endowment in accordance with

the spending policy adopted by the Foundation. (Currently 5% of the three-year average market value of the endowed fund.)

• Gifts totaling less than $10,000 may be classified as a limited term endowment. Additional contributions will be applied to the corpus until the fund reaches the $10,000 minimum endowment level. No awards are made from limited endowment fund until the balance reaches a minimum of $10,000.

• An endowed scholarship may be named and the criteria may be established by the donor.

• A Scholarship Account Contract will be signed that details the scholarship criteria agreed upon between the Foundation and the Donor.

• All gifts to an endowment shall be irrevocable, unless otherwise approved by the Foundation Board of Directors.

The athletic programs at Southwest Minnesota State benefit theentire university and, in turn, our surrounding communities.Whether in NSIC or NCAA competition, Mustang athletesdemonstrate the SMSU commitment to high quality in bothacademics and athletics. The outstanding young women andmen who participate each season for the Mustangs are buildingimportant physical and leadership skills while gaining a superioruniversity education. The Mustangs are working to be the prideof southwestern Minnesota.

Who can join the Mustang Booster Club?All supporters of Mustang Athletics are encouraged to join theMustang Booster Club. You do not have to be an alumnus ofSMSU or a former student-athlete to join.

What is the difference between a restricted gift and anunrestricted gift?

An unrestricted annual gift supports all 17 varsity sports andhelps offset non-budgeted expenses throughout the course of theyear. A restricted contribution is made to a sport specific fund, a capital project or an endowment.

Is my contribution to the Mustang Booster Club taxdeductible?

Yes, it may be tax deductible in full or in part. You will receive agift receipt from the SMSU Foundation for tax purposes.

Tax Information• If you choose to accept your benefit dollars and apparel resulting

from your donation, 60% of your donation is tax deductible.

• If you choose to only accept benefit dollars and decline apparel aspart of your donation, 70% of your donation is tax deductible.

After reviewing your package, you can decide that you don’t wantadditional tickets or benefits. Since you will not use all of theassigned Benefit Dollars, you could apply those funds to the taxdeductible portion of your donation. You would not beallowed to transfer the remaining $50 to another BoosterClub Member or use it to redeem additional apparel.

The additional benefit of Hoofprint Dollars can be used to redeemapparel online. As a Stampede Level member, you would beentitled to use 125 Hoofprint Dollars to spend on MustangApparel/Novelty items. If you choose not to use all 125Hoofprint Dollars, your tax deductible donation would increase bythe unused amount.

You would not be allowed to transfer the unused balanceto another Booster Club Member or use it to secure ticketpackages, preferred parking passes or chairback upgrades.
