EMPLOYEE STATUS POLICY REVISION

To facilitate compliance with requirements of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the defini-

tions in HR 101 Employee Status have been expanded to include Variable Hour Employees, and restrictions have

been placed on the number of hours that employees in student titles may work.

Although Variable Hour Employees who average more than 30 hours per week in all combined appointments may

become eligible for medical benefits in 2015 under PPACA, they are not eligible for most other benefits. For pur-

poses of this policy, Administrative, Service and Support Staff are now defined as Regular or Variable Hour,

and Academic Staff are defined as Fully Benefit Eligible or Variable Hour.

Employees in student titles may not work more than an average of 28 hours per week across all concurrent jobs.

WELLNESS PROGRAM

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month This October, Healthy for Life is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women

born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the

most common kind of cancer in women (Department of Health and Human Services, 2013). The good news is that many

women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early. If you are age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to

start getting mammograms and how often to get them. Women ages 50 to 74 need mammograms every 2 years. You may

choose to start getting mammograms earlier or to get them more often. Worried about cost? Mammograms are covered for

women over age 40 under the health care reform law. More: http://1.usa.gov/159zd67. Did you know? Breast cancer can

occur in men. Over 2,000 men are diagnosed each year. More: http://1.usa.gov/HSlf4. Nervous about getting a mammo-

gram? Watch this short video about mammograms and what to expect: http://1.usa.gov/fKtUB

Now is a great time to get moving and create a culture of health on campus! Start a walking group! It’s easy to get started. Healthy for Life has FREE walking kits that provide directions to lead a walking group or competi-

tion. If you’re interested in leading a group or competition, email Sarah at [email protected]. Walking group leaders

receive a Healthy for Life T-shirt and water bottle. Walking maps are available on the Healthy for Life web-

site.

Would your department like to learn more about the wellness program? We’ll come to you! Healthy For Life would like to provide your department with a 15 minute general presentation to help educate the faculty

and staff at Missouri S&T about the employee Wellness Program. Please contact the campus Wellness Coordinator, Ryan

Claus [email protected], for questions about scheduling a presentation for your department.

September was National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month One in 3 children in the United States is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity puts kids at risk for health problems that

were once seen only in adults, like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease (Department of Health and Human

Services, 2013).

The good news is that childhood obesity can be prevented! In honor of National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month,

Healthy for Life encourages your family to:

Get active outside — walk around the neighborhood, go on a bike ride, or play basketball at the park.

Limit screen time — keep inactive (sitting down) screen time to 2 hours or less a day.

Make healthy meals — buy and serve more vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain foods.

Tips for parents:

Get the kids involved in planning and cooking healthy meals. http://1.usa.gov/hnuGz4 Use these tips to reduce your child’s screen time. http://1.usa.gov/69My6u Make sure your child gets at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. Get tips: http://1.usa.gov/3wnZMl
