The President’s Perspective

This season is a wonderful time of year. Sukkot marks the beautiful change in colors of the leaves in our trees and then we have Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is marked by the family gatherings that always occur. Regardless of location family members seem to find a way to be brought together. A nice meal, some football games, and a little togetherness are all expected occurrences at this season.

With this wonderful sense of home and family, I want to remind each of you that a similar special feeling of family is inherent in our congregation. Our Shabbat services and the multitude of other social events and educational opportunities create a shared moment for our religious family. We all share the pride for each B’nai Mitzvah. Whether you are new to the community or have enjoyed Evansville for multiple generations it is our home and Temple Adath B’nai Israel is the center of religious focus. As this season moves indoors I ask that each of you please spend some additional time with your religious family. Please join us at services.

Jeffrey Berger, our synagogue Treasurer, will be reaching out to each of you. Please re-consider your financial support of the Temple. Please help protect and preserve our religious home and programs.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, and my family, please enjoy this season with good health and happiness.

Marc Fine

We are several weeks into our JCC drive. To those of you who have responded with your checks, our deepest thanks. To those of you who are contemplating your pledge, keep in mind the many agencies your dollars support. Most importantly, of course, is Israel. The pain we feel when we watch the news reports or read the newspapers hurts our very souls. We all pray for the peace and safety of all the inhabitants of Israel. And, we are also deeply concerned for Jews throughout the world. This is a difficult time for all people regardless of where they live. Throughout the world, people are suffering from the effects of terrorism and economic depression. We are all feeling the throes of economic upheaval. It is difficult to be asked to give and then, asked to give more. But this is what we must do.

The Evansville JCC uses your pledge to support vital programs throughout the United States and abroad. We also have a commitment to our local endeavors. We are making our presence known locally and statewide. We are a vital part of a community in which we share a responsibility for each other. We are a community where we can each make a difference. Be committed, be involved--set an example for the entire community.

We hope that you will take this message as a reminder that your support is critical. Our community has responded well in the past to the needs of our brethren around the world. Never let it be said that we in Evansville, Indiana, have shirked our responsibility. With your help we will be able to continue our work at home and throughout the world. Your contributions are vitally needed.

PLEASE GIVE A GIFT FROM THE HEART--TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

A contribution of $35.00 will fill (1) one food basket and in so doing you will be able to visualize the happiness of someone less fortunate than you. You can send your check directly to Temple Adath B’nai Israel. Your check needs to be sent in by November 18th.

PLEASE GIVE WHATEVER YOU CAN…IT’S A ‘MITZVAH’….. I’m sure as a Jewish Community we will once again show our commitment to those who are in need within our community.

President Michael A. Sontz called the meeting of the Lodge to order. The first order of business was a report of the Lodge Ritual committee in order to discuss the past holidays. All members of the Lodge attended every High Holy Day Services which sets a record. Awards were discussed and by anonymous vote the following trophies will be given: Best Shofar Bluzer-Alexander Bakke; Best opening and Closers of the Ark Doors-Donna and David Krueger; Most outstanding performance of Reading Prayers on the Pulpit-Eugene Fine; Best cook at the Break-the-fast dinner, the Noodle Kugel by Jeff Berger and best reader from the Torah-Katherine Brice. There were many guests who attended services. The Lodge members also named Bill Mazo, the father of our Rabbi Gary, an honorary member of the Lodge. The Ritual Committee also discussed the music during the services. For many years last past the members sang “HATIKVAH” after the prayers were recited at the Lodge office. After more discussion “HATIKVAH” has been changed to “SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW”. Mark Senzell reported that donations to the Teddy Bear Project were made by Robert Duvin and his wife Darlene sending their best wishes to all of the TABI congregants. Aunt Henrietta and Uncle Lou really did a good job raising their children. The second contribution was from Lois Simon to show her support of our project and because she cares about the homeless children and those in hospitals. There should be more Robert Duvins and Lois Simons in this world. Our B’nai B’rith Lodge recently made a contribution to the Temple for a luncheon for participants in the Race for the Cure and our annual gift for Sukkot. We do care about our TABI congregants and would appreciate some support.

LOST AND FOUND (and ready to be donated):When was the last time you went to your cabinet to look for a pan or tray or bowl and found it had disappeared? It is probably in the Temple kitchen waiting for its return trip home. While everyone is most appreciative of all the wonderful things that come out of our members' kitchens, your bake ware, serving trays, glasses, silver trays and vases are begging to come home. Richard does such a wonderful job keeping the kitchen in order-- extra "stuff" is not needed.

You may pick up your possessions any time until the end of the month. At that time they will be donated to a charity.
